Warriors open as ’22-23 favorites; C’s, Nets nexton June 17, 2022 at 4:53 am

The Golden State Warriors are the favorites to win next year’s championship, but that could change during an offseason with big-name free agents on the market.

The Warriors are 5-1 to win the 2023 NBA title at Caesars Sportsbook, followed closely by the Brooklyn Nets and Boston Celtics, who are each listed at 6-1. The Milwaukee Bucks (15-2), Phoenix Suns (8-1) and Los Angeles Clippers (8-1) round out the teams with single-digit odds entering the offseason.

Kyrie Irving, Bradley Beal, Zach LaVine, Jalen Brunson, James Harden and DeAndre Ayton are among the free agents who could shake up the title odds this offseason. But for now the Warriors are the favorites and have their core stars under contract. They’ve already attracted at least one big bet, too. Caesars Sportsbook reported taking a $10,000 bet on the Warriors to win next year’s title from a bettor in Colorado in late May.

“I’d say it’s more wide open at the top now than it was in previous seasons,” Adam Pullen, assistant director of trading, said in a company release. “Usually with the NBA, you can count the title contenders on one hand. Here, you can look at 10 teams that you can make a legitimate case for.”

Golden State knocked off Boston on Thursday in a clinching Game 6 103-90 win in the NBA Finals. It was the Warriors’ fourth title in the last eight seasons. Golden State joins Boston, the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers as the only franchises to win four titles in an eight-year span.

The Warriors didn’t start as the favorites at sportsbooks this season. Golden State tipped off the season with 10-1 odds to win the title, behind the Lakers, Nets and Bucks at Caesars Sportsbook. But the Warriors stayed near the top of the standings in the Western Conference for much of the season and fought their way through the playoffs to win their fourth title under coach Steve Kerr.

“I think it was a no-brainer to have the Warriors as the favorite,” Pullen added. “When they’re healthy, you can’t argue with their pedigree over the last decade. Everything points to the Warriors being the favorite.”

Other notable championship odds for next season, according to Caesars Sportsbook, include: Miami Heat (14-1), Philadelphia 76ers (16-1), Dallas Mavericks (16-1), Memphis Grizzlies (16-1), Los Angeles Lakers (22-1), Bulls (60-1) and New York Knicks (150-1).

The Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, Sacramento Kings and Orlando Magic have the longest championship odds, each listed at 1,000-1.

Chicago Bears rookie offensive tackle has this advantage over Teven Jenkins

Braxton Jones has been working on using his arms

Chicago Bears rookie offensive tackle Braxton Jones has had a big week. Reports from veterans mandatory minicamp have him starting at the left tackle position. Jones spoke to the media following Thursday’s practice. One of the skills Jones has been working on is something his teammate will have a disadvantage at.

The biggest transition to the NFL from college has been learning how to throw his hands, Jones said. “In college, you know, I was really reserved with my hands and I didn’t use my long arms to my advantage,” he said. “So I’d say that was one of the big things and still to this day, I mean, I’ve still got to work on them. They’re a big thing for me and they’re going to help me be very, you know, good in this league,” Jones said.

Bears offensive line coach Chris Morgan has helped Jones work on his hand technique, Jones said. “He’s been a big influence on that. Just throwin’ them babies, letting them go,” Jones said. “They’re long, just letting them go. You know, and he’s just harping on me, and I love it because it is a big thing I notice when I punch em, get em off their spot. It’s huge. It helps me recover, do anything, just using those hands.”

Jones has a size advantage over Teven Jenkins

Bears’ second-year tackle Teven Jenkins has been working with the second team since last weeks OTA’s. A lot of questions have been circulating as to why he’s not with the first team at tackle or guard. One thing we know for certain is Jones has longer arms than Jenkins. Arm size was one of the disadvantages Jenkins had that was noticed by scouts before he was drafted.

Jenkin’s arm size measures at 33 1/2″, whereas Jones measures 35 3/8″. What that will mean in July is anyones guess. But it is interesting Jones spent a good chunk of his press conference talking up a stregnth he had while being a part of the first team, while Jenkins is getting reps with the second team while having inferior size with his arms legnth.

Jones himself acknowledged that all of the offensive linemen are still fighting for a starting spot for the regular season. “I think everybody’s competing. Maybe rotating or whatever you want to call it. It’s all competition. Everybody’s competing for a job at the end of the day. I’m competing for a job,” Jones said.

Make sure to check out our Bears forum for the latest on the team.

Warriors finish off Celtics for 4th title in 8 yearson June 17, 2022 at 4:48 am

BOSTON — For the fourth time in eight years, the Golden State Warriors have been crowned the NBA champions, as they beat the Boston Celtics 103-90 on Thursday night in Game 6 of the NBA Finals.

The Warriors became just the second team in NBA history to win a championship on Boston’s home court.

Stephen Curry led the way for Golden State, scoring 34 points on 12-of-21 scoring, including 6-of-11 from 3-point range. He added seven assists, seven rebounds and two steals.

But Thursday night’s title-clinching win was a display of the Warriors’ depth, and the number of players who could step up on any given night.

Draymond Green played his best game of the series, scoring 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting, 12 rebounds, eight assists, two steals and two blocks. He also hit two 3-pointers after missing his first 12 attempts of the series. He struggled on the other hand, however. With Green as the primary defender, the Celtics shot just 9-of-17 from the floor on Thursday night.

Andrew Wiggins continued his strong series, finishing with 18 points, six rebounds, five assists, four steals and three blocks. Jordan Poole added 15 off the bench, while Klay Thompson scored 12 points. Gary Payton II had just six points, but finished with a plus-18 net-rating.

Up to this point, the Warriors had struggled to close out series this postseason. Heading into Game 6, Golden State was 0-3 in close-out games on the road, and the Celtics were 3-0 when facing elimination.

Early on, it looked as though both were destined for the same fate, as Boston jumped out to a 14-2 lead four minutes in. But what transpired over the next nine minutes defined the game, ultimately bringing the Warriors to their seventh double-digit comeback win this postseason. That’s tied for the most by any team in the past 25 postseasons (the 2011 and 2012 Heat both had seven).

With about a minute and a half left in the first quarter, Green hit his first 3-pointer of the series to put the Warriors down just one. Curry followed that play with a 3-pointer to give the Warriors’ their first lead of the night. Poole put the icing on this sequence with a 29-foot 3-pointer the next trip down.

The Warriors outscored the Celtics 35-8 from the middle of the first quarter into the middle of the second, including a 21-0 run that lasted four minutes.

As the Warriors continued their aerial assault, the Celtics fans that made TD Garden one of the hardest arenas to play in sunk quietly into their seats, and the travelling fans in blue and gold became louder and bolder.

The Celtics made several pushes. Late in the third quarter, they even cut the Warriors’ lead to nine.

Boston continued making timely shots in the fourth, keeping itself within arms length. But the Celtics could get no closer than that. The Warriors forced stops, then kept hitting shots, and when it was time to put the Celtics away, they did.

The Warriors stormed the court as time expired, with players such as Curry, Green and Thompson finally getting back the feeling they had experienced many times before, while younger players such as Wiggins, Poole and Gary Payton II felt it for the first time.

It was a full circle moment for Golden State.

Two years after questions about their dynasty rose, they proved they still have it in them. After missing the playoffs for two straight seasons, they had just won the title. After having the league’s worst record two years ago, they are the best team in the NBA.

Ice sculptures, Jordan Poole hits 17 straight 3’s during warm-ups and more from Game 6 of the NBA Finalson June 17, 2022 at 1:46 am

The NBA Finals could end Thursday if the Golden State Warriors can get another win at the TD Garden in Boston against the Celtics.

Golden State has struggled to close out series on the road this postseason. According to ESPN Stats & Information, the Warriors are 0-3 this season when they have a chance to end a series away from the Chase Center. The Celtics have the opposite experience, with a 3-0 record in elimination games this postseason.

History favors teams leading 3-2 heading into Game 6, however. Those squads have won the series 81% of the time (39 of 48 times). The last team to blow a 3-2 lead was the Warriors against the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016. If the Warriors win, it would be their fourth championship in an eight-season span, the first time that has happened since the Chicago Bulls (1991 to ’98).

The fans at TD Garden brought the energy for Games 3 and 4, so expect things to be even more raucous for a win-or-go-home Game 6.

Here are some of the best scenes from Game 6 of the NBA Finals.

Dancing to the music

The Warriors continued their road tradition of playing music during their shootaround or pregame from artists that originate from the city they’re playing in. So for the second time in these playoffs, Golden State’s shootaround playlist included Boston’s own New Edition and group members who famously went solo.

So when the media was allowed into shootaround on Thursday morning, Steph Curry was shooting to the smooth vocals of Johnny Gill and his classic slow jam “My, My, My.” They did not, however, go with Gill’s 18-minute live version of “My, My, My” which is incredible (look it up!)

Warning to the Celtics: during the previous Warriors shootaround here in Boston for Game 4, Curry shot to New Edition’s “Can You Stand the Rain.” And of course, he went on to explode for 43 points and 10 rebounds later that night.

After Steph shot to “My, My, My,” the speakers blared New Edition’s most famous member, Bobby Brown, and his hit “My Prerogative.” Fittingly, Draymond Green — Public Enemy No. 1 here in Boston — started grooving to it, especially when the lyrics, “They say I’m crazy… I really don’t care” came on. — Ohm Youngmisuk

Game 6 Klay?

Klay Thompson has made a name for himself in playoff Game 6s throughout his career. Teammate Jordan Poole showed support for another outstanding performance (hopefully) by rocking a 2011 NBA Draft shirt featuring Thompson.

The Chicago Cubs losing streak now reaches double digitsVincent Pariseon June 16, 2022 at 11:30 pm

The Chicago Cubs are in a really bad spot. They are now 23-40 after losing ten straight games. They are now in a two-way tie for last place in the National League Central Division. Nobody ever thought that the Cincinnati Reds would catch anyone in the division but the Cubs have been that bad.

This tenth straight loss came in the four-game sweep that the San Diego Padres laid on them this week. It is as low as the Chicago Cubs have been all season long. It is honestly the worst that they have looked in a really long time.

We knew that the Chicago Cubs were going to be bad this year but nobody ever would have thought it’d be this bad. They traded away most of their roster starting after the 2020 season and have been rebuilding ever since.

During this dreaded 10-game losing streak, the Cubs have been outscored 90-30. They haven’t just been losing most of these games as they have been dominated in almost every way. Even when it looks like they are going to end it, they find a way to lose.

The Chicago Cubs need to find a way to end their double-digit losing streak.

How do the Cubs get out of it? Well, they need to just keep playing. They have good starting pitchers and good hitters on the team but they haven’t been able to get it all at the same time.

Even when Willson Contreras hit two home runs to get the Cubs a 5-0 lead on Tuesday, they weren’t able to hold on against the Padres. Those are the types of games that even the worst teams need to win but they weren’t able to. Nothing is going right.

Is David Ross going to be on the hot seat here? Well, he shouldn’t be. They have mostly lost to really good teams. In fact, every team they lost to on this streak is in first place of their division as of right now with the exception of the Baltimore Orioles who only accounted for one loss (the other game was rained out).

This roster that the Cubs have given Ross isn’t good enough to compete with these teams. Should they win at least a few of these games? Yes. But it isn’t Ross’s fault that the team is a disaster on the field because of the fact that they are a disaster on paper.

Players on this team need to step up so that they can get out of this. It isn’t going to be easy but it can happen. Unfortunately, the red-hot Atlanta Braves are in town now so the Cubs will have their hands full against the defending world champions. However, winning a game against the champs to end this 10-game streak would go a long way for their organization.

Wild Fork

Wild Fork

A lot of people are still convinced that frozen food should be used only as a convenience or when fresh isn’t available. Scratch that.

All of the food sold at Wild Fork has been blast frozen at forty degrees below zero. Since everything is frozen in IQF portions, and then packed in vacuum sealed packages, it’s easy to remove what you need, reseal the package, and then pop it back into the freezer.

Food can be either be taken out of the freezer and defrosted overnight in the refrigerator, or, if time is short, sealed packages can be left in a bowl of cold water for 30 minutes. Instructions for defrosting are on every package.

Employees in the store at the corner of Main Street and Chicago Avenue in Evanston said their inventory typically included upwards of 450 items with even more available online. Granted, ground ostrich, alligator and elk medallions may not be on most peoples’ list, but chicken thighs, chocolate lava cake, pizza, steaks, fruit, soup and quiche are definitely mainstream.

The company, which is currently headquartered in Dorel, Florida, was founded in 1995. There are already brick and mortar stores in Florida, Dallas, Chicago and California, and there seem to be a lot more on the way. The company currently ships their products to most parts of the continental United States. Reduced delivery fees are available for members. Check online for additional information and an updated list of locations.

So what have I tried? For starters, the tomato basil soup got two thumbs up. I used one of the chicken thighs to make a Vietnamese dish. The flavor was good, and there wasn’t a lot of fat that needed to be trimmed. I haven’t tried the fried rice or the smoked salmon yet, but the frozen vegetables have been just fine.

Next time, I’m planning be more adventurous. Maybe the elk medallions aren’t as far out as I thought they were…

Chicago Bears’ Darnell Mooney gives epic response to question about Justin FieldsRyan Heckmanon June 16, 2022 at 10:30 pm

Chicago Bears mandatory minicamp is in full swing, and with a couple of practices in the books, folks are writing the narratives that they want to spin.

From the offense having a bad day during the first practice, and then turning it around on the second day, fans can expect hot and cold reports from all different directions. But, we have to remember: it’s June.

This is minicamp. It’s not even training camp. The pads are off. Contact is prohibited. These are essentially workouts and walk-throughs. But, they are important to an extent, especially for second-year quarterback Justin Fields.

The Bears are counting on Fields in a big way this coming season, and ensured the pressure would be on his shoulders by not adding a true, legitimate threat at wide receiver this offseason. But, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have weapons.

One of the top breakout picks for the 2022 season, Darnell Mooney, sees big things coming for he and his quarterback, no matter what is said outside of Halas Hall.

After one of the first Chicago Bears minicamp practices, Darnell Mooney had an epic answer to a question about Justin Fields.

Following one of the first practices, Mooney held his media availability and gave us all a thorough, enjoyable 10 minutes or so. But, one of the questions and answers that stuck out should give fans a whole lot of “inject this into my veins” type of energy.

“Where have you seen him take the greatest strides over the last couple of months?” Mooney was asked.

Mooney went on with a fairly lengthy answer, but this was by far the best snippet:

“Just locking in and … he wants to take over the league… He wants to be the best quarterback in the league. I have unbelievable faith that he’ll be there. His success is my success.”

First off, hearing a teammate publicly say that Fields wants to take over the league and be the best in the game is certainly an eye-popping moment. Obviously, every starting quarterback is a competitor and wants to be great. But, Fields has a quiet confidence about him. You can sense that he does, indeed, want to be great.

Second, Mooney gets it. He understands how this thing works.

“His success is my success.”

This particular quote is an absolutely epic response by Mooney, because it shows that he understands how a team game works. He knows that, for him to have success, then Fields must be successful — and vice versa.

So, while a lot of it is, in fact, on Fields’ shoulders, his no. 1 wide receiver understands that a lot of that pressure also falls on him as well.

This is a quarterback-wide receiver relationship where you can truly see a strong, lasting bond that’s been formed. Mooney has the utmost confidence in Fields, and although the rest of the world continues to doubt this team, the two of them are ready to set the league on fire.

Bears help wanted: No experience necessary

Bears rookie Braxton Jones has noticed he’s not being treated like just another fifth-round draft pick since he started taking first-team reps at left tackle during OTA practices.

“They’re harder on me,” Jones said. “Maybe when I was taking Team-3 reps or Team-2 reps, that one o-lineman didn’t need to rely on me as much. But I think they’re harder on me, and I like it like that.

“Even going against a guy like Cody Whitehair, he’s hard on me. Every play, he’s like, ‘C’mon, you’ve got to get off the ball, you’ve got to do this.’ And I think it’s great for me –them getting on me a little bit more is something I need. The respect is there, but also I think the level of ‘Let’s go’ is there as well.”

Holding Jones to a higher standard is plenty of respect in itself. While Jones still has major hurdles to clear — practices in pads, preseason games and the regular season if it comes to that — the rookie from Southern Utah is in line to battle for the starting job at left tackle.

Whether he makes it or not, he’s going to get the opportunity, which is what Matt Eberflus’ first Bears training camp will be all about. Jones is one of 26 rookies on the Bears 90-man roster — 11 drafted, 15 undrafted. And any of them who shows anything could move up the charts quickly.

This figures to be a wide-open camp and a golden opportunity for rookies. Already, cornerback Kyler Gordon and safety Jaquan Brisker — the Bears’ two second-round draft picks — are slated for starting jobs. And wide receiver Velus Jones –the Bears’ third-round draft pick –will be given every opportunity to prove he isn’t ready.

Unlike previous teams, this version of the Bears doesn’t have a lot of proven veterans to get in the way of a rookie with potential. There’s no Jason Peters. No Tashaun Gipson. No Jimmy Graham.

And Eberflus seems very content with giving any rookies an opportunity to prove themselves.

“You’re going to have to put him in,” Eberflus said. “You’re going to have to learn from your mistakes and learn from practice and get the experience. Now as long as you’re talented enough and you’re a pro-level starter — of course those guys are going to make plays and you can see that pretty quick. I’ve seen that with a lot of guys that we’ve started early in their career.”

A year ago, the Bears were in no-man’s land under general manager Ryan Pace and coach Matt Nagy –thinking they were contenders with a roster that needed an overhaul. Who knows just how difficult this rebuild season will be, but it will be refreshing on one level — Eberflus seems much more likely to play developing players who give the Bears the best chance to win in 2023 than veteran players who give them the best chance to win in 2022.

We’ll see how it shakes out, but Eberflus seems willing to tolerate a player losing a game today if that experience helps him win more games tomorrow. That’s what the Bears need.

And he already has his eyes on some rookies who will get a good shot in training camp based on their play in the offseason program.

“When I see a guy that has the talent at this time of the year, I want to really get a thorough evaluation of him in training camp,” Eberflus said.

Matchups will be the tell that Eberflus is intrigued by a promising player.

“[If] I have Player A that I think is on the rise, I’ll say, ‘OK, let’s put him against our best guy so I can see it,” Eberflus said. “So he’s playing against a pro player, a really good starter. Now I can see what he can do. And we’ll match those up all the time.

“It’s not just roll the ball out there –ones vs. ones; twos vs. twos. No –lets’ match these players up so we can see them, because a lot of times what happens is if you have a rookie that was playing with the twos … he doesn’t get that exposure. He really needs to get that exposure and see where he’s at, and in the end it’ll [improve] his game and make it better by going against better talent. We’ll do that all the way through [the roster].”
