Sources: UM’s Howard declines Lakers’ intereston May 22, 2022 at 7:06 pm

University of Michigan coach Juwan Howard recently declined a Los Angeles Lakers overture for the franchise’s coaching job, electing to remain at his alma mater, where Howard will coach his two sons next season, sources told ESPN.

The Lakers have a formal search process in place, but courting college coaches typically requires a different level of discretion. The Lakers have a finalist list of Milwaukee Bucks assistant Darvin Ham, Golden State Warriors assistant Kenny Atkinson and former Portland Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts, sources said. The Lakers are expected to conduct in-person interviews in the near future.

The Lakers never made a formal offer to Howard, sources said, but it’s clear that if he had expressed an interest in the job, his candidacy would’ve moved quickly to that stage. While Howard has a playing history with Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka and star LeBron James, he has consistently maintained he plans to remain in Ann Arbor, where his sons Jace and Jett will be a junior and freshman, respectively, next season.

Howard interviewed for the Los Angeles job as a Miami Heat assistant coach in 2019, before accepting the head-coaching job at Michigan. Howard’s success in the college ranks — along with his r?sum? as a six-year Heat assistant and a two-time NBA champion as a player — has inspired significant interest in him among NBA teams.

Boston Celtics president Brad Stevens was interested in Howard for his coaching opening a year ago, but Howard declined that overture too, sources said. The Celtics hired Brooklyn Nets assistant Ime Udoka.

Like Howard, Ham is another ex-player with strong leadership, presence, winning experience and tactical understanding from past work with high-level head coaches. Ham is also a strong candidate for the Charlotte Hornets‘ head-coach opening, sources said. Ham worked with Hornets GM Mitch Kupchak as a Lakers assistant coach a decade ago.

Stotts and Atkinson both bring with them previous NBA head-coaching experience.

Stotts most recently coached the Blazers from 2012 to 2021 and reached the playoffs in his final eight consecutive seasons on the job — including two trips to the Western Conference semifinals and a berth in the conference finals in 2019. He is known for his offensive creativity and an ability to build relationships with his star players.

Atkinson built a reputation for player development as both an assistant and head coach in the NBA. He spent three-plus years as head coach of the Nets, whom he led to a playoff appearance in his third season in 2018-19.

Howard is 93-61 in three seasons at Michigan and was named national coach of the year in 2021. His time with the Wolverines has included top-five poll rankings in all three years, a Big Ten regular-season title and two trips to the NCAA tournament.

Chicago Bears QB Justin Fields is ‘more comfortable’ this year

The talk this offseason surrounding the Chicago Bears has been with quarterback Justin Fields.

The former Ohio State standout was selected No. 11 overall in the 2021 NFL draft but had a rocky rookie season in the league. Fields was named the backup to Andy Dalton and barely received any reps with the first team in the offseason. It was an injury to Dalton that forced Fields into early playing time otherwise we likely wouldn’t have seen him until very late in the year.

While there has been some criticism for new general manager Ryan Poles and head coach Matt Eberflus for the lack of weapons Fields has in the offense, the quarterback says he feels a lot more comfortable going into this season due to knowing he will be the guy.

Here is what he told Scott Polacek of Bleacher Report in an exclusive interview:

“I’m more comfortable this year,” he said. “I kind of know what’s coming and know what to expect. … Me not knowing if I’m going to be the leader of the team or not last year compared to this year means a whole different mindset. Just comfortability and knowing that I’m going to be the guy and that this is my team is definitely a different mindset as I try to be a leader for everybody on the team.”

It was clear that Fields’ confidence was shot at times last season, specifically in the Week 3 loss to the Cleveland Browns where he and the offense couldn’t muster anything. Fields was reportedly even pissed off about that game plan that Matt Nagy had for him.

But this offseason, Fields does look more confident out there and with training camp looming in July we will get to see just how comfortable he is.

If Fields does take that step forward, that would be good news for the Bears as they continue to search for their franchsie quarterback.

Make sure to check out our Bears forum for the latest on the team.

NBA docks Mavs $100K for third bench violationon May 22, 2022 at 6:41 pm

DALLAS — The Mavericks were fined $100,000 for “continuing to violate league rules regarding team bench decorum,” the NBA announced Sunday.

It is the third time the Mavericks have been fined for bench-decorum violations this postseason. The fines have totaled $175,000, doubling on each occasion.

The statement from the league office cites multiple occasions in the Mavs’ Game 2 loss to the Golden State Warriors that “several players and a member of the coaching staff stood for an extended period in the Mavericks’ team bench area, stood away from the team bench, and were on or encroaching upon the playing court during game action.”

1 Related

The Mavs were assessed fines for similar infractions after a Game 2 loss and a Game 7 win against the Phoenix Suns in the Western Conference semifinals. The Mavs made it clear at the time that they had no intention of toning down the enthusiasm from two-way player Theo Pinson, injured guard Tim Hardaway Jr. and the rest of the bench.

“The league is worried about the wrong thing,” Kidd said after the first fine was assessed. “You have millionaires cheering on other millionaires. Doesn’t happen in this society. And the enthusiasm of the game, for a teammate to cheer on another teammate is special. And I think sometimes we’re focused on the wrong thing. And so when you look at people who make a lot of money cheering on their teammates or their employees, that’s what sport is all about. And so for us to get fined, that’s cool. It’s going to another good cause, charity. But again, we’re looking at the wrong thing.”

On one occasion in Game 2, the Mavs’ reserves being on their feet impacted the game. The Warriors committed a turnover when Stephen Curry mistakenly passed the ball to Pinson, who was standing and wearing a shirt that was white, the same color as Golden State’s uniform.

“I don’t mind as long as it doesn’t interfere with the game,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said on Saturday. “I don’t mind it. I love the fact that Dallas’ bench is energetic and talking trash and into it. I think that’s what fans want to see. They want to see a team that cares and they want to see energy and chemistry. So I love it, but when it interferes with the game, that’s when it crosses the line.

“So that’s the only thing I’m concerned with, if there is a play that … if there’s a person on the court, person who is standing up calling for the ball, that’s a little too much. But otherwise, I really enjoy it. I think it’s great.”

Chicago Bulls fans shouldn’t worry about LaVar Ball’s free agency predictionRyan Heckmanon May 22, 2022 at 1:13 pm

Now that the Chicago Bulls are into full-on offseason mode, so are the fans. The biggest question regarding this team’s immediate future?

Zach LaVine and his impending free agency tour.

Up until the past couple of weeks, it was tough to see LaVine leaving Chicago. However, LaVine did say that he plans to “enjoy free agency” and essentially test the waters. He doesn’t seem completely committed to staying in Chicago at the moment.

One person who happens to see LaVine leaving Chicago is also connected to the Bulls due to his son being their starting point guard. LaVar Ball has come out and given a prediction as to where he thinks LaVine will end up. Spoiler alert: it’s not Chicago.

“He’s gone and I’m going to tell you why. It started off ‘Zach LaVine, Zach LaVine, Zach LaVine’. Now you get hurt and a few things happen and guess who’s doing all the big plays? All I hear is DeMar. He don’t want to play second fiddle.” (via CBS Sports)

Chicago Bulls fans should not worry about LaVar Ball’s prediction in regards to Zach LaVine’s free agency tour.

Ball went on to say that he believes LaVine will end up on the West coast, predicting he signs with the Los Angeles Lakers — which just so happens to be where Lonzo Ball played originally.

It’s a bit funny to think that Ball believes he knows where LaVine is going, considering most of what he’s said in the past holds no real merit when it comes to the game of basketball. After all, this is the guy who once said he would beat Michael Jordan in a game of 1-on-1, and with one arm tied behind his back.

Ball thinks LaVine wants to go back to the West coast, because he has ties there and it’s an attractive place to play.

While Ball is partially correct, he’s forgetting one specific detail in regards to LaVine’s possibilities: If LaVine stays in Chicago, he can make far more than he would make elsewhere.

If LaVine signed somewhere else, he could only make a maximum of roughly $150 million. However, if he stayed in Chicago, he could sign a max deal worth over $210 million. West coast ties aside, an extra $70 million would surely do some talking.

Seeing LaVine decide to try out free agency is no surprise. Every player deserves to enjoy that process. It’s LaVine’s right to do so. But, in the end, it makes a whole lot more sense for him to stick around in Chicago.

So-called expert has a hilariously bold prediction for the Chicago BearsRyan Heckmanon May 22, 2022 at 2:15 pm

Chicago Bears fans are usually all over the map with their opinions. One thing, above all else though, is true: they’re typically passionate and convicted opinions.

Whether it was about good Jay or bad Jay (Cutler), Rex Grossman being the reason the Bears lost their Super Bowl 15 years ago or even recently with Mitchell Trubisky’s development, the takes and opinions are always up for debate amongst Bears nation.

Just a few days ago, Bears fans saw one of the boldest takes ever put out on national television.

FOX Sports analyst Nick Wright, known for his outlandish takes at times, gave his season-long predictions for the 2022 NFL campaign. Where did he have the Bears?

.@getnickwright picked every single NFC game for the 2022-23 season!

He breaks it all down here: pic.twitter.com/uPWSWLW92E

— First Things First (@FTFonFS1) May 17, 2022

For those who didn’t click, Wright has the Bears going 11-6 this upcoming season.

Now, that’s a bold take.

The biggest debate amongst Bears fans and, well, the national media too lately, has been about whether Ryan Poles has done enough to surround Justin Fields with the necessary talent going into Year 2.

One could argue that the Bears have not added enough weapons for Fields, as he seems to have just a couple of number two or three receivers at his disposal with some other low-tier names.

Others could argue that Fields did, indeed, receive enough help this offseason solely based on the scheme change under new offensive coordinator Luke Getsy.

Then, there’s the thought that Poles is more focused on the 2023 offseason in terms of making big moves. All of this first offseason under Poles has lined the Bears up well for plenty of cap space (over $100 million) and draft capital next year.

But, no matter where you fall in these debates, you’re likely not picking the Bears to win 11 games — at least not in the right state of mind.

Wright is joined by the likes of Chris Broussard on his show, who is best-known for his “sources” back at ESPN — which were usually wrong, and nobody ever believed him anyways. These shows like “First Things First” are all for show, as we know well.

Morning sports television has mostly become all about hot takes and bold predictions that never pan out, but they surely make for good ratings.

If Wright is actually convicted about this Bears prediction, then so be it. Heck, every Bears fan out there would gladly take 11 wins. But, the reality is, the Bears are more of a 6-or-7 win team — as justified by most of the over/unders out there sitting at 6.5.

Why Zach LaVine is unlikely to leave the Chicago Bulls in free agencyRyan Heckmanon May 22, 2022 at 3:15 pm

Just as it was four years ago, this is the summer of Zach LaVine for the Chicago Bulls. Except, four years ago, LaVine was no where the level of star he is now.

Going into this offseason, LaVine is now set to enter unrestricted free agency. Back in 2018, he was a restricted free agent. Thus, when he received an offer from the Sacramento Kings, the Bulls were able to match it, keeping him in Chicago.

Many things have changed in four years, though, and some of them for the better. Four years ago, LaVine was coming back to a team in Chicago which was headed no where. He was ‘the man,’ sure, but he wasn’t going to be part of a winning culture anytime soon.

Just last year, Arturas Karnisovas and Marc Eversley worked hard to bring winning basketball back to Chicago. Now, LaVine faces a difficult decision ahead. Does he entertain leaving Chicago and potentially take less money? Or, do the Bulls get to keep their man?

Zach LaVine will enjoy free agency, but he is unlikely to leave the Chicago Bulls.

When looking at LaVine’s free agency this summer, one has to realize the facts. And, the facts are: hardly any team would have the cap space to sign LaVine to a max deal. For that reason, this summer may actually be a tough one for any team to lure in a max free agent.

At the moment, the only team that could sign LaVine to a max deal is the Portland Trail Blazers.

Now, the most rumored team to possibly land LaVine is, of course, the Los Angeles Lakers. The possibility of joining LeBron James in L.A. has to be a tempting one to LaVine, who originally played his college ball out at UCLA. His ties to the West coast could come into play, here.

But, not even the Lakers could afford LaVine at this point.

Last year, the Lakers executed a trade for Russell Westbrook — and more than likely did so because of LeBron’s desire to add the veteran point guard. He has become more of a GM in L.A. than anything, lately.

Now, if the Lakers wanted LaVine, they would have to trade Westbrook just a year after acquiring him. Not only would they have to trade Westbrook, but they’d have to figure out how to trade Kendrick Nunn and Talen Horton-Tucker, per the above referenced piece from Bleacher Report.

Even after doing all of that, the Lakers wouldn’t be guaranteed LaVine. Remember, LaVine can make roughly $70 million more by staying in Chicago than he could if he signed with another team.

Sure, enjoying his free agency experience is big for LaVine. It’s something every player would love to do, being a highly-coveted player on the open market. But, when it’s all said and done, it’s highly unlikely LaVine goes anywhere else.

Tony La Russa is destroying the 2022 Chicago White SoxVincent Pariseon May 22, 2022 at 4:12 pm

The Chicago White Sox have a lot of talent on that baseball field. Unfortunately, they don’t have any chance to win something of significance as long as Tony La Russa is their manager. He is slowly but surely killing this team.

They are currently in the middle of a series with the New York Yankees who could claim that they are the best team in Major League Baseball right now. That is a team that makes their lineups the right way no matter what.

Unless there is a rest day or a weird pitching matchup, they lead off with DJ LeMahieu every time. He is always followed by, in order, Anthony Rizzo, Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and Josh Donaldson. That is a top-five that produces runs unlike any other in the American League.

White Sox manager Tony La Russa likes to change it every single game no matter what. He also likes to put random bad hitters like Leury Garcia in the two spot like he did for game one of Sunday’s doubleheader. He is absolutely destroying this team’s chance to win.

Yoan Moncada and Andrew Vaughn are on the bench for this one too. Like it or not, those two are part of the “best nine” on the White Sox but they get the first game off in favor of guys like Leury Garcia and Josh Harrison. It is becoming a big joke.

Tony La Russa is clearly killing this Chicago White Sox team with his decisions.

We can only hope that the elite talent on this team combined with outstanding pitching is able to overcome the bad lineups and managerial decisions. This is a very good baseball team that has a chance to win every game because of their talent. It would just be nice if they had a manager that knew what he was doing.

It would be so cool to see this team just start using their best players every game unless there is a random off day for someone. That is what guys like Leury Garcia, Josh Harrison, Adam Engel, and Gavin Sheets should be used for. The Yankees do it that way and it seems to be working well for them.

Chicago’s Week in Beer, May 23-26

Chicago’s Week in Beer, May 23-26

is a Ukranian beer being imported as a fundraiser.

Things have calmed down from Illinois Craft Beer Week to the lead-in to Memorial Day. A lot of summer holidays stay pretty light, unless it’s in a town with a parade or other observation.

They may be another new brewer opening this coming weekend. Howard Street Brewing, billing itself as “Chicago’s Northernmost Taproom,” has been trying to get open for nearly two years, owing to COVID, this, that and the other thing. Their web page now shows an opening on Thursday, May 26 at 3 pm. If I can find more details, I’ll post them here (1617 W Howard Street, Chicago).

Donaldson comment to Anderson called ‘racist’on May 22, 2022 at 4:33 am

A heated afternoon on the field continued off it afterward, with Chicago White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson taking offense to being called “Jackie” by the New York YankeesJosh Donaldson, a comment deemed “racist” by manager Tony La Russa.

Donaldson admitted after the game to calling Anderson “Jackie” — a nod to Jackie Robinson — in the first inning. He apologized, saying he meant no disrespect. However, Anderson, who is Black, said after the game that he took offense to the comment.

“He just made a disrespectful comment,” Anderson said. “Basically he was trying to call me Jackie Robinson. ‘What’s up, Jackie?’ I don’t play like that. I don’t really play at all. I wasn’t really going to bother nobody today, but he made the comment and you know it was disrespectful and I don’t think it was called for. It was unnecessary.”

Donaldson, who is white, said the “Jackie” comment was in reference to a 2019 interview with Sports Illustrated in which Anderson described himself as feeling like “today’s Jackie Robinson” in how he’s “getting to a point where I need to change the game.”

Donaldson on Saturday said it was a reference about which he’s “joked around” with Anderson about it in the past.

Major League Baseball is looking into the matter and speaking to all of the relevant parties involved, a source told ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez.

Robinson broke the Major League Baseball color barrier in 1947. Every team in the big leagues has retired his No. 42 to honor the struggle, sacrifice and social impact he had on the game and beyond.

White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson is restrained by teammate Jose Abreu from going after the Yankees’ Josh Donaldson on Saturday. Sarah Stier/Getty Images

In the third inning, Donaldson had rounded second base after the final out and began jawing with Anderson as the teams came off the field. Donaldson, a former AL MVP in his first season with the Yankees, was escorted off the field by manager Aaron Boone, and Anderson, an All-Star shortstop, was led off by third-base coach Joe McEwing.

“He made a racist comment, Donaldson, and that’s all I’m going to say. That’s as strong as it gets,” La Russa said.

Asked if he agreed with La Russa, Anderson said, “Same. Same. Along that same line.”

Donaldson, who said he told his side of the story to his Yankees teammates, told reporters that he would be open to meeting with Anderson to discuss the incident.

“My meaning of that is not any term trying to be racist by any fact of the matter,” Donaldson said. “Obviously, he deemed it disrespectful. And look, if he did, I apologize. That’s not what I was trying to do by any manner and that’s what happened.”

The Yankees and White Sox had the benches clear May 13 in Chicago when Anderson objected to a hard tag by Donaldson.

Donaldson said Saturday that he was “trying to defuse” any lingering tension when the players crossed paths early in the game.

In the fifth inning of the Saturday game, White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal stood up from his crouch and began jawing at Donaldson as he approached the plate. The barking continued as relievers ran in from the bullpens and the benches emptied, with La Russa also yelling at Donaldson.

“Believe me, you don’t want me to tell you guys what I told him,” Grandal said to reporters.

Anderson continued to shout at Donaldson while being restrained by Jose Abreu and infielder Gavin Sheets. After a few minutes, umpires issued warnings to both sides and Donaldson struck out.

“This game went through a period in time where a lot of those comments were meant, and I think we’re way past that,” Grandal said after the game. “And it’s just unacceptable. I just thought it was a low blow and I want to make sure I’ve got my team’s back. There’s no way that you’re allowed to say something like that.”

Said Boone of the incident: “I know … some talk of that. I’ve got to get to the bottom of it.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Rare bullpen clunker dooms Cubs in 7-6 loss to Diamondbacks

After Cubs left-hander Justin Steele allowed one hit and struck out nine in five shutout innings Saturday against the Diamondbacks, you couldn’t blame manager David Ross for turning the game over to his bullpen with a four-run lead — the Cubs came in leading the National League in bullpen ERA (3.10), with virtually every key reliever on a roll.

But after Chris Martin got four consecutive outs to get into the seventh, a rare succession of bullpen failures spoiled Steele’s second consecutive fine start in a 7-6 loss in 10 innings at Wrigley Field.

Brandon Hughes, Scott Effross, David Robertson and Rowan Wick (1-1) allowed a combined seven runs as the Cubs (15-24) frittered away an early 4-0 lead to lose their fourth consecutive game.

“At some point you’re not gonna pitch as well as you’ve been pitching,” Ross said. “These guys give their effort. We were behind hitters at times. These guys [Diamondback hitters] took a lot of borderline pitches, to their credit. And we’ve got to make plays behind them.”

Ross said he wasn’t very tempted to let Steele go further after Steele had retired the last seven betters he faced. He threw 89 pitches.

“[Not] the way our bullpen’s been throwing the ball,” Ross said. “He had to work really hard, and when it gets to the back side of the start and he has a clean inning, it’s a perfect pocket for a right-handed reliever at the top of their order. So it made lot of sense to get him [out] and have two really good back-to-back starts.

Steele, who allowed one earned run and struck out 10 in six innings against the Diamondbacks last Sunday, said he felt good and would have gone more if asked.

“As a competitor I always want the ball in my hands,” he said. “But I respect every decision that’s being made. I’m not the one making those decisions. I’m just doing what I’m told. But our bullpen’s been absolutely fantastic this year, so I completely understand it.”

Hoerner closer

Shortstop Nico Hoerner (sprained ankle) continues to get close to returning. “Nico ran the bases [before the game]. Looked pretty good to me,” Ross said. “Probably looked about 80-85%. He’s getting closer.”

This and that

Frank Schwindel and Patrick Wisdom hit back-to-back home runs off Diamondbacks left-hander Madison Bumgarner in the second inning to give the Cubs a 2-0 lead. Seiya Suzuki hit an RBI double and catcher Yan Gomes followed with an RBI single to make it 4-0 in the third.Effross allowed Pavin Smith’s pinch-hit home run in the eighth inning to end a streak of 14 consecutive appearances without allowing an earned run. Gomes made a nifty defensive play in the sixth inning, hustling to retrieve Yonny Hernandez’s bunt down the third-base line, then turning and throwing to first in one motion for the out. After the Diamondbacks scored three runs in the 10th, the Cubs nearly tied it. Jonathan Villar’s RBI double made it 7-6. But Suzuki struck out to end the game.Josh Rojas, who hit three home runs on Friday, had worse luck Saturday — he was called out on a check swing that hit him in the first inning, and left the game with a bruised hand. The start of the game was delayed one hour and 35 minutes because of rain.
