Better than the Kentucky Derby shocker, Berkowitz w/Pastor Corey Brooks, Part 2, on fixing the violence and poverty on the So. Side of Chicago, Cable & Web

Pastor Brooks believes his new $35 million Center will help deal with CPS’ failure to teach students to read at grade level, especially for blacks, of which only 15% of 11th graders can read at grade level.  You can watch our Pastor Corey Brooks show, Part 2, 24/7 by clicking here.

When Pastor Brooks sees such statistics as only 15% of black CPS 11th graders read at grade level, he “Wants to cry.” He wants to say to Dem and GOP politicians” “Do you not see this.”

Part 2 of our interview with Pastor Brooks airs on cable in Chicago:

Tonight, 8:30 pm and midnight, Ch. 21Tomorrow night, 9:02 pm Ch  21 (CAN TV), as the lead segment  of a 2 hour IL Channel package. The package airs around the state this week on various other outlets at various other times.Saturday morning, 9:02 am, Ch 21 (as the lead segment of the package)Sunday morning, 8:32 am, Ch 19 (as the lead segment of the package)

When kids can’t read at grade level, Brooks says they are more likely to drop out of school and turn to gangs, the streets, guns and violent behavior as a “Path to affirmation.”

Brooks says the new Center will be one of the few safe places for kids and adults to go to in Woodlawn, Chatham and Englewood in order to relax and to get help with academics, learn a trade, see how to become an entrepreneur or learn basic life skills. Ultimately, the Center will help transform the residents and South side communities so that adults can take care of themselves and their families.

The Center’s location will be just across the street from Brooks’ New Beginnings Church, where he has been preaching for the last twenty years and which also serves as the home for Project H.O.O.D.

Although Democrats have super-majorities in the State House and State Senate and control the Mayor’s office and City Council, as well as most of the levers of State Government, Berkowitz and Brooks say that Republicans are also guilty of not trying to use their bully pulpits to address the educational and violence existential issues on the South Side of Chicago.

Show host Berkowitz and Pastor Brooks ask why so few of those politicians, such as Gov. Pritzker and Speaker Welch will join the CEOs and come sit for lunch or dinner with Brooks on his temporary residence- a make shift roof top at 66th and King Drive across the street from his Church to (1) hear and obtain a better feel for the sounds and sights of violence and horror that the kids and adults must deal with every day and (2) strategize how to raise the additional $ 24 million needed to construct the Leadership and Economic Opportunity Center so needed by those kids and adults.

Brooks, Part 2 also airs this week on cable in:

Aurora: Wed. & Saturday, 6 pm, Ch 10 andRockford: & nearby suburbs, Thursday, 8:30 pm, Ch. 17

Williams named top coach after guiding Suns’ riseon May 9, 2022 at 11:32 pm

Phoenix Suns coach Monty Williams has been named NBA Coach of the Year, the Associated Press reported Monday, citing a source familiar with the decision.

The league is expected to make an official announcement later Monday, although Suns stars Devin Booker and Chris Paul appeared to break the news on social media earlier.

The award comes a year after Williams finished second in voting, just 11 points behind winner Tom Thibodeau of the New York Knicks.

Under Williams, the Suns finished with an NBA-best 64-18 regular-season record and earned the top seed in the Western Conference playoffs. Before the past two seasons under Williams, it had been 10 years since the Suns had finished with at least 50 wins in the regular season, and last year’s NBA Finals trip was their first since Charles Barkley led them there in 1993.

Last month, Williams was honored with the National Basketball Coaches Association Coach of the Year award for the second straight season.

Williams, 50, is in his third season in Phoenix and his eighth overall as an NBA coach, including five with the New Orleans Pelicans (2010-15). He is a career 322-299.

Williams suggests special seats for player familieson May 9, 2022 at 10:38 pm

Phoenix Suns coach Monty Williams said the NBA should consider having a special section in the stands reserved for the families of visiting teams in the wake of Chris Paul‘s family being harassed during Sunday’s playoff game in Dallas.

The incident happened during Game 4 of the Western Conference semifinals between the Dallas Mavericks and Suns. Several family members of Paul were in attendance, and were harassed and physically contacted by a fan in the crowd, sources told ESPN on Sunday night.

Paul addressed the disturbing Mother’s Day incident on social media following the Mavericks’ 111-101 win that tied the series at 2-2.

He tweeted: “Wanna fine players for saying stuff to the fans but the fans can put they hands on our families … f— that!!”

Paul’s mother, Robin, as well as his wife, Jada, and their two children watched the game in seats close behind the Suns’ bench at American Airlines Center, sources told ESPN. His mother had hands put on her and his wife was pushed, a source familiar with the situation told ESPN, and Paul’s kids were there to witness it. Paul’s wife was also followed up the aisle when she left her seat, a separate source said.

“They felt very unsafe,” a source familiar with the situation told ESPN.

“It’s a hard one, because it’s happening more and more,” Williams said Monday at Suns practice. “The situations are getting to a place now where I really feel like families, who are there to support their loved ones, need to be protected a bit more. Whether or not we have to give these people a section, a suite, something has to be done.

2 Related

“Because we can’t wait for it to get to a level or two higher, before we do what we need to do. Yesterday was unnecessary.”

The Mavericks said after the game that they were aware of the incident between a fan and Paul’s family at American Airlines Center. Williams said he didn’t know the extent of the harassment in real time because the game was still being played.

“It was unacceptable behavior and will not be tolerated,” the Mavericks said in a statement. “The Mavericks, along with American Airlines Center, swiftly removed the fan from today’s game.”

Paul didn’t speak to the media after Monday’s practice.

Suns forward Cam Johnson said a similar situation happened in Milwaukee last season during the NBA Finals when his girlfriend was hit in the back of the head and had beer spilled on her. Johnson said he didn’t hear about the incident until after the game.

“It was kind of a big scene,” Johnson said. “It really frustrated me.”

Johnson said security in Milwaukee handled the situation and that the fan was kicked out of the game. He said security can only do so much to keep families safe.

“A large part of the responsibility has to be on fans,” Johnson said. “They just can’t act that way. There’s no other way around it. You’ve got to address the problem with the real problem. It’s that a fan can’t go up to someone’s mother and harass them.”

Game 5 is Tuesday night in Phoenix, with the series tied, 2-2.

“I have to stress that I don’t think this is indicative of the fans in Dallas,” Williams said. “They’re cheering for their team. I’ve never had this kind of incident at that arena, even going back to the old spot, Reunion Arena, never.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

White Sox activate 3B Moncada, reliever Kellyon May 9, 2022 at 7:39 pm

CHICAGO — The Chicago White Sox activated two key players from the injured list on Monday as third baseman Yoan Moncada and new reliever Joe Kelly are ready to make their first appearances of the season, the team announced in a press release.

Moncada, 26, has been out since the final days of spring with a right oblique strain while Kelly, 33, has been recovering from a biceps nerve injury. He signed a two-year, $17 million deal with the team in mid-March and should fill a middle- to late-inning reliever role.

The switch-hitting Moncada has been a big part of the White Sox two playoff teams the past two seasons but hasn’t had an OPS above .800 since 2019. His power numbers dipped last season, as Moncada hit just 14 home runs but he compiled a career high in walks with 84.

The White Sox are last in the majors with just 58 walks in 27 games. To make room on the roster for the moves, the team placed lefty reliever Aaron Bummer on the injured list with a right knee strain while sending infielder Jake Burger to Triple-A Charlotte.

Game Recap

A rare offensive explosion from the Iowa lineup. The effort was led by the two guys who have provided the most consistent production for the team throughout the first month. P.J. Higgins doesn’t provide much power but he’s been above .300 all season, and his 5-for-5 effort yesterday pushed his average to .377 on the year. Jared Young has been a bit on the opposite end of the spectrum. He hasn’t hit for much of an average, but he’s brought the power. His home run brought his total to 8 on the season, second best in the system behind new teammate Nelson Velazquez. Young also doubled, his third over his last two games.

Jared Young’s comeback the past two seasons has been amazing. It is like 2019 never existed pic.twitter.com/3KtBQIY5ug

— Todd (@CubsCentral08)

May 8, 2022

Iowa also got an impressive outing from their most consistent starter. Caleb Kilian has had to work around traffic in several of his starts, but he’s mostly kept the opposition off the board, thanks in large part to the ability to miss bats at an above average level while keeping a lot of the contact he does allow on the ground. The righty has given up just one home run over 24.2 innings. He mixes speeds well, the new curveball has given him another viable weapon, and he just seems like he always has a plan of attack available to him. But his command hasn’t been as sharp as last year, and I’m sure the Cubs are hoping that will come around as the season progresses.

I’m not sure if he could come in and dominant MLB hitters right out of the gate but I don’t see him struggling any worse than the current staff either. I know fans are anxious to see him in Chicago, especially given the big club’s recent results, but I would expect the Cubs to slow play it with Kilian a bit. He’s still being limited to 4-5 innings and 75-85 pitches per start. He threw just 100.1 innings last year (plus a handful of starts in the AFL). I would expect them to slowly stretch him out in Iowa while controlling his innings load over the 1st half, while they let Wade Miley and Alec Mills work their way back into game shape and continue to showcase Drew Smyly. Once trade interest picks up in those veterans Kilian should be a ready replacement.

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

Andrelton Simmons (shoulder) started at DH in his second rehab outing. He was once again removed after getting four at bats. Cubs are clearly not pushing him too hard. My guess is he will require a couple of more rehab appearances this week, maybe trying to get him back-to-back starts in the field before heading to Chicago next weekend.

Stephen Gonsalves was forced to leave with one out to go in the 9th because of an injury. Ben Leeper came on to finish the game.

Brendon Little made his 2022 debut with a scoreless inning. The 94-95 and good slider that put him in line (before injury) for 40-man consideration last September appears to be back.

AA

Tennessee 9, Birmingham 4

Game Recap

His final line doesn’t leap out at you, but Cam Sanders picked up right where he left off in his last start. He was unhittable in his previous outing and through his first four innings yesterday allowed only a pair of weak singles. His control wasn’t as sharp this time around though. He did issue a couple of early walks and thren uncorked his second wild pitch with a runner on in the 5th. He’d eventually give up a two-run homer before being lifted because of pitch count later in the inning.

Barons’ anncr: scout told me if Cam comes anywhere close today to what he did Tuesday, I’m putting him down as a major league pitcher.

Sanders seems to have a lot of confidence in his SL right now, shaking off other pitches in 2-strike counts. A prime example from today: pic.twitter.com/9fFlv06Uba

— Itsacon (@thats_so_cub)

May 8, 2022

Consistency remains the one thing holding him back. The stuff is good. And in many innings he can put it where he needs to. But not often enough where I can easily see him projecting as a SP in the Majors. It’s not out of the question, but his best role may end up as the multi-inning reliever the Cubs have found successful with Keegan Thompson, Justin Steele, and Adbert Alzolay in recent seasons.

Anncr: “Wow. His stuff is just dirty.” pic.twitter.com/NZqsam79C2

— Itsacon (@thats_so_cub)

May 9, 2022

The Cubs were saved from potentially losing Sanders in the cancelled Rule 5 Draft last offseason. They won’t be so lucky again. Sanders will need to be added to the 40-man this fall, which means the Cubs could jump the gun and add him in the 2nd half of the season and potentially utilize him in Chicago as a replacement for a traded starter or reliever. In the more immediate future, my guess is he heads to Iowa in the next round of promotions.

Sanders wasn’t the only story yesterday. Christopher Morel continues to break out offensively, and could very well being joining Sanders with a move to Iowa soon. And we already know he can field:

Yonathan Perlaza has also taken advantage of the playing time opened up by the recent promotions of Nelson Velazquez and Nelson Maldonado. He recorded the team’s only extra base hit yesterday and has now reached base multiple times in each of his last four games (5-for-10, 2 2B, HR, 3 R, 3 RBI, 4 BB, HBP, SB).

Game Recap

D.J. Herz only threw 50 pitches yesterday, but made them count. His control had been off in his previous couple of outings, but he righted himself in this one. He breezed through 2.1 shutout innings, setting the tone for the South Bend bullpen as the team recorded their second straight shutout. Bailey Reid, Eduarniel Nunez, Nicholas Padilla, and Jeremiah Estrada each made quick work of Peoria batters. Other than Estrada providing a scare by walking the bases loaded in the 9th, Peoria never really threatened in any other inning.

Game Recap

Take away one rough outing on April 19th (7 runs, 4 earned in 0.2 IP) and Luis Devers has been as solid as any pitcher in the system so far this year. Since that game Devers has struck out 16, walked just 2, and allowed just 4 earned runs over 14 innings. He was the ACL club’s most consistent starter last season, and he’s shown average or better stuff in the little bit I’ve seen of him this year. I’ll be sure to give him a closer look once Myrtle Beach returns home and I get a better camera view.

In Game 1, the Pelicans offense once again came up with a big inning to pull away from the opposition. This time it was a five-run 3rd featuring a sac fly by Cole Roederer, then back-to-back-to-back hits by Kevin Alcántara, Malcolm Quintero, and Juan Mora. The final run of the inning scored on a wild pitch. Myrtle Beach added two more the next inning on an RBI double by James Triantos (his second double and third hit of the game). He would eventually score on a throwing error as Alcántara stole second base.

Game two was a little rougher on the pitchers. Tyler Schlaffer entered the year as a starter with some buzz, but it’s been a rough go thus far for him. He gave up two runs in 2.1 innings to raise his ERA to 6.30. Jose Gonzalez followed and didn’t fare any better, giving up three runs over 2.2 innings. An Ezequiel Pagan homer and Kevin Alcántara RBI double weren’t enough.

Speaking of Alcántara though, like Triantos, his bat seems to be heating up. These are two young guys with little experience tasked with performing in a pitcher’s league, so bumps in the road should be expected, but we are already seeing each make quick adjustments, which is a great sign.

Nick Madrigal should follow Chicago Cubs’ Frank Schwindel to AAAVincent Pariseon May 9, 2022 at 4:16 pm

The Chicago Cubs are off to a disastrous start in the 2022 season. They don’t have any chance of competing this year and the future doesn’t appear to be particularly bright. They have a few players that are nice trade bait to rebuild the roster but there is more to the issue.

This team already sent down Frank Schwindel. That is not something that anybody saw coming after the way that he dominated at the end of last season. However, if he is being held accountable, everyone should be too.

The Chicago Cubs acquired Nick Madrigal and Codi Heuer in the trade that sent Craig Kimbrel to the Chicago White Sox last year. It appears as if the Cubs won that trade because Kimbrel ended up not being very good and they already traded him to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Codi Heuer is out for the year after Tommy John so it is all on Nick Madrigal right now. Well, if Pollock hits the way that he’s proven that he can, maybe the White Sox actually won the trade by simply being better at asset management.

Nick Madrigal needs to follow Frank Schwindel to AAA if he continues to be bad.

It is a conversation at all because Madrigal has been brutal too. If Schwindel is getting sent to AAA, Madrigal should be right behind him. He has been awful. His batting average is supposed to be his strength as a slap hitter so hitting .213 is brutal.

He has absolutely no power in his bat which is evident by that OPS of .516. The OPS is also low because he is getting on base at a horrid clip of .263. Something is very wrong with him right now. Sending him to AAA would not only hold him accountable but also help him get back on track.

Madrigal was the perfect nine-hitter when he was with the White Sox before the injury/trade and that is not the guy we have seen this year at all. His defense and base running has left a lot to be desired as well which makes his lack of offense even worse. He hasn’t really provided anything.

The Cubs are in big trouble. Madrigal is supposed to be one of those guys that play second base for them for a long time but right now he is looking like someone who doesn’t belong in a Major League lineup at all.

Cubs fans better hope that this guy figures it out quickly or they are in trouble. As mentioned before, he should be right behind Schwindel if he keeps up this horrid level of play in all areas of the game.

Betting tips for NBA playoffs: Celtics-Bucks, Warriors-Grizzlies Game 4son May 9, 2022 at 5:33 pm

All odds are provided by Caesars Sportsbook.

What you need to know for the Monday playoff games

Hold off on Horford: Al Horford has found the fountain of youth this postseason. He tallied 22 points, 16 rebounds and 5 assists against the Bucks on Saturday and cashed just about all of his props. But should you go back to the well? He has averaged 13.9 points and 9.6 rebounds this postseason, numbers that are reflected in his DFS price tag and prop market. However, he’s shooting 50% from 3-point range with the majority of his shots coming from deep. That is impressive, but not exactly sustainable. Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown accounted for 73.8% of the points from Celtics’ starters and 65.5% of their shots, following Boston’s first loss in the series. That leaves little meat on the bone for Horford, considering he has averaged one free throw attempt every 40 minutes this postseason. His scoring floor is lower than the prop markets suggest.

Taking the under: There were 254 points scored in Game 3 between the Grizzlies and Warriors. With Gary Payton II sidelined, the Warriors’ defensive efficiency was 3.6% better than in their first seven games this postseason. That’s not to suggest that they are better without Payton, but their game plan was clear: stop everyone not named Ja Morant. The Grizzlies star made 13 of 21 shots while his teammates shot just 27-of-71 (38%), making it logical to assume the Warriors employ a similar strategy Monday night. While Memphis welcomes back Dillon Brooks, counting on volume from anyone except Morant is dangerous. Golden State should be able to limit the efficiency of the Grizzlies’ supporting pieces. Fourteen of Golden State’s 17 best games in terms of defensive efficiency came in front of their home crowd. So you should take the under on any of Memphis’ team and player props. — Jim McCormick & Kyle Soppe

Breaking down the Monday games

Boston Celtics at Milwaukee Bucks
7:30 p.m. ET, Fiserv Forum, Milwaukee

Line: Bucks (-1)
Money line: Bucks (-115), Celtics (-105)
Total: 212 points
BPI projected total: 216 points
BPI win %: Celtics (59.2%)

Questionable: None

Ruled out: None
Note: BPI numbers factored in players who are ruled out but assumes questionable players will play

Notable: The Celtics covered the closing line Saturday by half a point and the nail-biting nature is nothing new for Boston. Five of its past seven games have been decided by seven or fewer points. To that end, over their past six games, the Celtics are 5-1 ATS and unders hold the same mark.

Best bet: Brook Lopez over 17.5 points + rebounds

The Bucks are dominating inside scoring and had 52 points in the paint in Game 3. Lopez had 13 points and 10 rebounds and has averaged 11 PPG and 6.0 RPG so far this postseason. We should see this trend continue Monday night. — Eric Moody

Best bets: Celtics ML (-102), Celtics 1Q (+0.5), Jayson Tatum over 3.5 made 3s. I believe the Boston will win outright Monday night and win the series. Giannis Antetokounmpo had an insane game Saturday after the Celtics’ defense limited him in the first two games. Despite Antetokounmpo’s performance, the Bucks almost lost the game in the final seconds. The Celtics will be hungry for a victory and come out hot as they did in Game 2, outscoring Milwaukee 32-21 in the first quarter.

As for player props, I am looking at Tatum over 3.5 made 3s. He should step up his game after going 4-for-19 from the field and 0-for-6 from 3 in Game 3. This line may seem high, but Tatum went 4-for-9 and 5-for-10 from beyond the arc in the first two games respectively. Typically, players bounce back after a rough performance, especially superstars like Tatum. — Erin Dolan

Best bet: Jrue Holiday over 1.5 steals

Holiday has averaged 1.5 SPG during the playoffs. The Celtics only committed 12 turnovers in Game 3, but Holiday recorded three steals. — Moody

Best bet: Under 212.0 points

This series has been a defensive slugfest. Both the Celtics and Bucks have averaged 196.3 combined points over the past three games, with no game higher than 204 points. There is nothing to suggest that pattern is about to change. Both teams are among the most physical, defensive-minded groups in the league and the pressure just keeps ratcheting up on both sides. I expect another close defensive battle in Game 4 with a low score. — Andre Snellings

Memphis Grizzlies at Golden State Warriors
10:00 p.m. ET, Chase Center, San Francisco

Line: Warriors (-10)
Money line: Warriors (-550), Grizzlies (+400)
Total: 223.5 points
BPI projected total: 225.6 points
BPI win %: Warriors (60.8%)

Questionable: None

Ruled out: Ja Morant
Note: BPI numbers factored in players who are ruled out but assumes questionable players will play

Notable: Game 3 on Saturday flew over the 225.5 total with 254 points, but be careful in assuming we see something like that again tonight. The next time consecutive Memphis games go over the total this postseason will be the first, with unders a perfect 3-0 following Grizz overs (going under by an average of 17.3 points).

Best bet: Stephen Curry over 33.5 points + assists

Curry has averaged 27.6 PPG and 5.6 APG so far this postseason. He had his 44th career 30-point game in Game 3, tied for the third-most among active players. With Ja Morant expected to miss Game 4, Curry should deliver a spectacular performance. — Moody

Best bet: Andrew Wiggins over 23.5 points + assists + rebounds

Wiggins had one of his best performances with the Warriors in Game 3. His shot selection and defense were excellent and he has averaged 16.7 PPG, 1.3 APG and 6.7 RPG- in this series. Wiggins should surpass those averages in Game 4 with the level of confidence he is playing with right now. — Moody

Best bet: Draymond Green over 7.5 assists

Green had a game-high eight assists in Game 3 and he’ll likely be a distributor again for the Warriors’ plethora of shooters. Green has averaged 7.0 APG in the playoffs. — Moody

Best bet: Under 224.5 points

The Grizzlies performed shockingly well without Morant during the regular season, winning 20 of the first 22 games Morant missed. The formula included playing stronger defense to help make up for their poorer offensive execution. Both of these patterns suggest Game 4 should be lower-scoring. — Snellings

Best bet: Dillon Brooks over 17.5 points. Brooks returns from a nearly two-game absence Monday night, and with Morant likely out he should become a focal point of the Grizzlies’ offense. Brooks averaged 19.8 PPG without Morant from Nov. 26 to Dec 19. And then averaged 20.9 PPG when Morant was absent again from March 20 through April 9. Brooks could be in for a great scoring night. — Snellings
