What should we expect from the Chicago Bears quarterback on Sunday night?

Late on Friday afternoon, the Chicago Bears made official what everyone has known the entire week, and that is that Mitchell Trubisky will be the starting quarterback on Sunday night.

The Bears, who travel to Lambeau Field to take on the Green Bay Packers in primetime, will look to end a four-game skid and get back into the thick of the NFC playoff picture by turning to their former No. 2 overall pick. But what should we reasonably expect out of Trubisky? Is it fair to have higher expectations for him now that he has had seven weeks to assess his play?

The short answer is “no.” While fans are seemingly reinvigorated by the return of Trubisky, it is not reasonable to expect his play to be significantly better than the up and down style of play that led to his benching in the first place.

While it is true his mobility is a benefit behind a poor offensive line, it is not the elixir some might think it is. At the end of the day, in order for him to be markedly improved as a quarterback, he is going to have to have vastly improved his footwork and his ability to process defenses.

Unfortunately for Mitch, the latter, which is the most critical for him, is tough to improve while sitting on the sidelines and running the scout team.

That doesn’t mean the offense can’t be better, but again, fans should temper expectations. While the run game was significantly better from a statistical perspective in the first three weeks (before Trubisky was benched), there are a couple of things to keep in mind.

First, they were playing three of the worst defenses in the entire league in the Detroit Lions, New York Giants, and Atlanta Falcons. Second, the offensive line in those first three games is not nearly the same as the group that will be trotted out there Sunday night. James Daniels has been lost for the season, and it appears the team could be without starting left tackle, Charles Leno, for the game.

While the line won’t look the same, Trubisky will have the benefit of feeding off more of the worst offenses in the league. As Mark Potash pointed out recently, after the Packers game, the Bears next four opponents rank T28, 23, 27, and 30 respectively.

The bottom line is the last seven weeks didn’t magically erase the flaws that led to Trubisky being benched back in Week 3.Improved playcalling can only help so much, especially with a depleted offensive line. So fans can be excited but should enter tonight’s game with reasonable expectations. The hope is that the offense is improved. How much remains to be seen.

The Chicago Bears are not looking good going into their game against the Green Bay Packers.

It is sad to say but the Chicago Bears are an awful football franchise. This is a storied team that has many legendary names attached to it but in the year 2020, they are a joke. The problem is that they aren’t just a joke as of recently, they have been a joke for a very long time. Things have been very bad for a while and it doesn’t appear to be getting better any time soon. Their recent play against their biggest rival paints a bigger picture.

The Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers form one of the greatest rivalries in the world of sports. There is Boston Red Sox vs New York Yankees, Montreal Canadiens vs Boston Bruins, Duke vs North Carolina, and Chicago vs Green Bay in the NFL amongst a few other great rivalries. Lately, however, the Packers just own the Bears and it doesn’t ever feel like a rivalry on the field.

How can it be a rivalry if one side basically has no chance most of the time? You probably wonder how it can be said that one side has no chance because any given Sunday can see any team win. Well, the Bears have just proven they are bad against the Packers historically. This upcoming game tomorrow night will not fare well for them according to the record books.

Since coming into the NFL with the Green Bay Packers, Aaron Rodgers has been one of the greatest quarterbacks who ever lived. He has been especially impactful against the Chicago Bears where he has a career record of 19-5. It is incredible how one quarterback within the division could have that much dominance over an opponent. The Bears are also 3-17 in their last 20 games against Green Bay. It is awful.

So, does anyone still subscribe to the “any given Sunday” mentality anymore? It doesn’t seem like they should because the Packers are so heavily favored in this game. The remarkable thing is that if the Bears win they will be only one game back of Green Bay in the division with a chance to go to the playoffs. This comes with very good defense and an awful offense.

Expect to see Mitchell Trubisky under center for Chicago against Green Bay on Sunday night. Coming off a bye week in the Matt Nagy era has not been easy for the Bears but this is their one final chance to impress people with this team as currently constructed. If they snap their losing streak they will reinsert themselves in the playoff conversation. Whether that is a good or a bad thing is up for debate at a later time. Nobody wants to see the Bears lose to Green Bay no matter what.

The Chicago Bears may see a lot of change in their roster come 2021.

This Chicago Bears season has been a different one. It’s been one for the history books already, as the entire league has dealt with the pandemic. But, for the Bears specifically, it’s been a tale of two halves.

Chicago began the season with a handful of down-to-the-wire finishes en route to a 5-1 record and atop the NFC North. They got there by finishing games; finding ways to win when it mattered most. Head coach Matt Nagy even made a quarterback change early on, and for a little while, it appeared to be the right call.

Now, the Bears are losers of four in a row and getting set to play the Green Bay Packers in prime time. In all likelihood, they will enter next week having lost five straight with a record of 5-6.

There will be plenty of changes next year, and if we’re lucky, it could include some movement at the top. Whether it’s Nagy, general manager Ryan Pace or both, the Bears are clearly in need of some change at leadership positions.

Whoever the general manager is next year will have a lot of work to do, too. By all accounts in 2020, we’ve seen some glaring issues which need fixing. Pace put a bandaid on the offensive line and it lasted all of a few weeks before the group imploded for many reasons.

The offense, in general, has been a mess. Between the play of the line, the quarterbacks and play-calling, the Bears simply can’t score points — oh and by the way, it looks as though they have to go back to Mitchell Trubisky. We’ve come full circle in a matter of two months.

However the priorities shake out, the Bears’ brass will have to figure out a way to fix things. There are positions of need that will require spending money. There are players which may not stick around for one reason or another. The Bears need change — lots of it. To start, the following three players could be candidates to cut next year in order to help solve some of those problems.
