Video shows shootout in killing of retired firefighter during Morgan Park carjacking attempton December 8, 2020 at 1:26 am

Chicago police released surveillance video Monday of the shootout during a carjacking attempt that left a 65-year-old retired firefighter dead last week in Morgan Park on the Far South Side.

Dwain Williams was confronted by four carjackers just after 2 p.m. Dec. 3 after leaving the popcorn shop Let’s Get Poppin’, 11758 S. Western Ave., authorities said.

Williams exchanged gunfire with the carjackers and was shot in his abdomen. He died later at Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

In the video of the shooting, which unfolded in just a few seconds, Williams is seen walking toward his Jeep with a bag in his hand when a car pulls up and three suspects jump out.

Williams then retreats behind his car as one of the suspects rushes toward him with a gun in his hand. Williams then pulls out his own gun and is seen firing shots at the suspect, who falls to the ground before jumping back into the car and fleeing.

“You can see how horrific a crime this was, and we’re trying to bring these offenders to justice and give the family some peace in this as well,” Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan said at a news conference Monday at Chicago Police headquarters.

Investigators believe the suspects followed Williams to the popcorn shop after seeing his car earlier in the day, Deenihan said.

Williams was a beloved Chicago Fire Department lieutenant who retired about two years ago after joining in 1992, officials said. He was about to return to work as a civilian employee at the Office of Emergency Management and Communications.

A group of activists and organizations, including the anti-violence group “I’m Telling, Don’t Shoot,” have put up a combined reward of $34,000 for information leading to any arrests in his killing.

Speaking at the news conference, Early Walker, founder of the group, lamented Williams’ killing in what seemed to be a routine trip to the store.

“He was trying to get some popcorn, and his life was taken over a vehicle,” Walker said. “Here is a man that gave his life to the city, finally was able to retire to try and enjoy his life and now his life was been taken.”

Community activist Andrew Holmes, who also contributed to the reward, implored the offenders’ family members to call detectives.

“Give any of us a call because sooner or later you’re gonna get a knock at your door and you’re gonna wish you hadn’t,” he said. “When you see this video…and you know that’s you’re relative, you know that’s your homie, think about your father. What if this was your father?”

Williams’ slaying comes amid a spike in carjackings across the city. Cops have responded to 1,254 carjackings so far this year, according to data maintained by the city. That’s a sharp increase from the 514 carjackings reported all of last year.

“It’s not just a Chicago problem; the carjackings all over Cook County and further out have been an issues,” Deenihan said.” Our carjacking task force has been doing an excellent job arresting these offenders. We just need to come up with a better comprehensive plan working with the entire criminal justice system in order to try and hold these offenders accountable.”

2 dozen Richton Park families showered with donations after apartment complex fireon December 7, 2020 at 8:44 pm

The holiday spirit was in full force as donations poured Monday for two dozen Richton Park families who lost their homes in a large apartment complex fire.

A semitrailer dropped off so much food Monday morning that organizer Early Walker told people to take “as many boxes as you want.”

“The families out here are grateful, they’re excited,” said Walker, president and CEO of W&W Towing, on Facebook Live outside the Matteson Holiday Inn, where the families were staying.

“It’s right before Christmas, and they lost everything.”

The 26 families were displaced Friday after a cooking fire spread in the apartment building in the 3800 block of Canterbury Lane, according to a statement from the village of Richton Park. Fire departments from surrounding towns helped put out the fire.

“Thankfully no lives were lost,” said state Rep. Debbie Meyers-Martin, D-Matteson, who spoke from outside the hotel. “I’m so proud of the Southland — how we’ve come to step up and help our neighbors.”

The displaced families initially were taken to the Rich Township High School gym but were later upgraded to a week’s stay at the Matteson Holiday Inn after an intervention by Walker, Matteson Mayor Sheila Chalmers-Currin and Rich Township Democratic Committeeman Calvin Jordan.

The families also received clothing and gift cards totaling $200 per family, Walker said.

“We have to be out here and support our communities,” Chalmers-Currin said. “I’m just glad we were able to support our neighbors.”

8 Biggest Games in Chicago This Past Decadeon December 7, 2020 at 7:50 pm

With a handful of championships from the Blackhawks, a World Series title from the Cubs, and a number of playoff runs, there have been some pretty incredible moments from Chicago teams in the last ten years. Of course, not all the magic happens in the postseason, and we’ve certainly covered plenty of those games in the past. Today, we’re here to highlight some of the biggest games in Chicago from this past decade.

Abreu’s Rookie Year Walk-Off

If there’s one thing Jose Abreu is known for in Chicago, it’s hitting dingers. Back during Abreu’s rookie season, the Chicago White Sox faced off against the Tampa Bay Rays at home towards the end of April. The team rallied in the bottom half of the ninth inning to make it 6-5 with two outs and Jose Abreu up to bat. In a typical fashion for Jose, he cranked a walk-off grand slam to the opposite field to give the White Sox the victory. What else can you expect from the current AL MVP?

Kyle Hendricks’ 81 Pitch Shutout

Pitchers rarely find themselves closing out games they start, but when they do it always makes for a spectacular show. A couple months into last season the Chicago Cubs faced off against the St. Louis Cardinals. Kyle Hendricks was the starter for the game, and he wouldn’t need any other pitching support to finish it. Through nine innings, Hendricks gave up only four hits on 81 pitches. This performance certainly earned it’s place as one of the best games from Chicago in this past decade.

Rodgers to Cobb Hail Mary

We’ve featured this game before in our breakdown of some of the worst “bad news Bears” moments in history, and it’s definitely one of the biggest games for a Chicago team this past decade. Facing off against the Packers in a battle for the NFC North crown, the Bears defense fell asleep on one of the game’s final plays. Aaron Rodgers found a wide-open Randall Cobb, and the Packers would rid the Bears of their playoff spot with the win.

The Bears Return the Favor

Sure, Aaron Rodgers’ hail mary at the end of the Bears season in 2013 hurt, but what didn’t hurt was the revenge we got years later. In the 2018 season, the Chicago Bears got back at the Packers for eliminating them in 2013 after a Week 15 victory. A young Mitchell Trubisky led the team with his performance as he finished 20/28 with 235 yards and two touchdowns. If only he could return to that form.

A White Sox Meltdown

After a great start to their 2016 season, it took one weekend of games against the Royals to slow their momentum. On May 28, 2016, the White Sox had a 7-1 lead over the Royals headed into the final inning. Twelve batters later, and the score was flipped in favor of the bad guys. Despite the loss, this still manages to be one of the biggest games for the Sox in the past decade. Hopefully, it’s something they never repeat!

Chicago Bulls Christmas Day Win Over the Lakers

Back when the Chicago Bulls team had some life in them, they could go toe-to-toe with anyone. Due to a lockout, the NBA started its 2011-2012 season on Christmas day. The Bulls had one of the first games on the schedule against the Lakers. A late-game rally led by Derrick Rose was all the Bulls would need to secure a one-point win over Kobe Bryant and the Lakers on opening night!

Chicago Blackhawks Undefeated Start

The 2010s will always be known as the decade that the Chicago Blackhawks dominated hockey. One of the most notable parts of their runs came at the start of the 2012 NHL season. The Blackhawks were undefeated through 16 games and were looking to set the record for the best start to an NHL season. They accomplished their goal by defeating the San Jose Sharks 2-1 at home giving them a record of 14-0-3. Naturally, they hoisted the Stanley Cup that same year.
