Chicago White Sox pitching carrying team & leads 3-1 win over rival Cubs

As if picking up from the strong start from Dylan Cease, the Chicago White Sox allowed only one run in their second win in a row. Facing the rival Chicago Cubs, the White Sox jumped ahead early and held on to win the game 3-1.

The win to open the series further highlighted the pitching staff. Cease has been one of the elite pitchers in baseball and the seven scoreless innings against the Angels with 11 strikeouts is impressive but not shocking. The recent game, however, showcased the entire pitching staff of the White Sox and how it could help carry the team this season even if the offense struggles.

Kopech’s start

Michael Kopech has started the season with a unique return to the rotation. On an innings count, Kopech has given the White Sox strong starts but in a limited role. In five starts, he has yet to allow more than two runs in each outing but at the same time, hasn’t pitched past the fifth inning.

The start against the Cubs was no exception. Kopech pitched four scoreless innings with five strikeouts. However, it was how the pitcher dominated on the mound, notably how Kopech used and controlled his secondary pitches that stood out.

Kopech’s pitch breakdown vs. the Cubs (83 pitches): 54 fastballs. 15 sliders. 13 curveballs. One changeup.

Kopech is a primary fastball thrower, and he threw the pitch in the high heat range of 97 miles per hour seven times. However, the recent start saw an increase in his secondary pitches. Moreover, the slider continued to hit the lower part of the strike zone and dip out of the zone and is becoming a reliable option for the righthander. While the fastball and curveball were all over the place, the slider gave Kopech the ability to limit the Cubs lineup.

It was another strong night for Kopech who once again stepped up in his start. While he could have provided more innings, the reaction to him leaving the game is exactly what the fans want to see. It was a sign that Kopech knows he can provide more innings and is frustrated he got pulled as a result. However, the team knows they’ll have a pitcher that by midseason can lead the pitching staff and become the elite pitcher the White Sox hoped he’d become when they acquired him from the Boston Red Sox in the Chris Sale trade.

Kopech had a pretty great response when asked about La Russa’s decision to pull him after 4 scoreless innings https://t.co/ChemXTHu4q

The White Sox are already seeing Cease become an elite starter in the rotation. The first five starts of the season have similarly shown the ceiling of Kopech. The recent start, however, showcased his ability to dominate on the mound and the gradual improvement that is seen with each passing start. While Kopech has shown he can provide more innings, the White Sox once again would need to rely on their bullpen to help preserve a victory for the team.

White Sox bullpen stepping up

The White Sox bullpen was well-rested. After all, only Kendall Graveman and Liam Hendriks needed to pitch an inning each in the 3-0 victory on Monday. With the rest, the bullpen was able to close out the game and give the team five reliable innings with the three-run lead.

In the elements, Reynaldo Lopez forced a grounder to Jose Abreu, who turned the 3-6 double play. Lopez then quickly struck out the Cubs’ first-year phenom Seiya Suzuki on a 2-2 slider to end the inning with only nine pitches thrown.

Jose Ruiz struggled in his one inning allowing one run on two hits. However, Ruiz went to the off-speed pitches to strike out the side, with the changeup and curveball getting him out of trouble. After getting out of the jam, the White Sox were in full control. Aaron Bummer only needed 11 pitches to get through the seventh, Matt Foster only needed 11 pitches to get through the eighth, Hendriks in 10 pitches earned his sixth save of the season. Based on the postgame interview, Hendriks as well as the rest of the bullpen was looking to get out of Wrigley in a hurry.

When the bullpen is clicking it looks effortless. Moreover, it’s hard to even notice the bullpen as they quickly retire the opposing lineups and seal the victories, as they often did last season. This year’s bullpen has struggled at times but once again, has proven to be a prominent part of the White Sox.

White Sox will rely on pitching looking ahead

The White Sox lineup struggled in April, scoring only 3.28 runs per game and in back-to-back wins, the lineup only scored three runs. The batting order is continuing to struggle in the cold Chicago weather and without Eloy Jimenez, requiring the pitching staff once again to step up.

The next game will see Lucas Giolito make his third start of the season. After a strong start against the Minnesota Twins, where he pitched four innings with one run allowed and nine strikeouts, the White Sox will need another big start. Moreover, Giolito is hopefully going to provide the team with more innings as he returns to form as one of baseball’s best starting pitchers.

The first few weeks of the season have been rough for the White Sox. Batting orders have struggled to find runs and the White Sox have been no exception, with the weather, the ball, and other exterior condition hurting the offense. However, the teams that make the playoffs are the ones that are scheme-proof. The teams that win in all types of conditions and all types of ballgames are the ones that make it to October. Early on, the White Sox have proven they can win on the mound with great pitching.

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

David Ross reported that Willson Contreras is day-to-day with an undisclosed injury. Cubs do not have a 3rd catcher on the 40-man roster so I’m assuming they are hoping to ride Yan Gomes for a few days while they assess his issue and hope it clears up so that they won’t need to make a roster move.

AAA

Iowa 7, St. Paul 3

Game Recap

It has been an offensively challenged season for Iowa, but for one day at least, the bats delivered. The team jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the 1st, then added two more runs in the 2nd, and another in the 3rd. They still aren’t hitting for any power, and there are only a couple of home run hitters in the lineup on a daily basis so that won’t change much, even as the weather warms. There are enough veterans around to expect more guys to hit above the Mendoza line though. So, I do expect some improvement. In some ways, the I-Cubs are facing a lot of the same challenges as the big club.

The two guys who did the most damage yesterday were Dixon Machado and Nelson Maldonado. Machado’s been the teams most consistent bat this season. Maldonado has only recently arrived, and got off to a slow start in his first few games, but he’s hit at every level, so expect more multi-hit games like this one. He’s traditionally been a gap power guy, but he’s gotten stronger this year, and so far a few more of his hits are finding their way over the fence. If that can continue he can provide a huge boost to the Iowa attack.

In additional positive news, Iowa got some good work from a pair of arms who we hope to see in Chicago come the second half of the season. There was some concern regarding some lower velo readings from Caleb Kilian during his last start, but to me it has looked like he is changing his strategy and repertoire depending in different starts. Some days he is relying more on elevated four seamers, so his velo is higher, in others he tries to work his two seamer more. He was firing some pitches in the 96-97 range in the 4th inning yesterday.

Ben Leeper has struggled with his command through several of his early appearances and it led to more walks and harder contact than we got used to seeing last season. His two innings yesterday were more reminiscent of his outings last year.

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

Veteran relievers Kevin McCarthy and Eric Yardley are no longer with the organization. Neither were pitching particularly well and had gotten buried in a fairly deep Iowa bullpen. I imagine the team released them, but it is also possible one or both had a May 1st opt out of their MiLB deal and were anxious for a fresh start.

AA

Tennessee 3, Birmingham 2

Game Recap

Darius Hill led off the game with a homer, and Tennessee would add on two more runs in the 1st. From there, the offense dried up, but it proved just enough thanks to a dominant effort by starter Cam Sanders.

The righty looked as good as he ever has on the mound. Consistency and command have been his main issues through the years, but yesterday everything clicked. He threw a ton of first pitch strikes with more than just his 94-97 mph fastball. His mid-80s changeup and low-80s breaker were weapons throughout the game as well.

This was a perfect example of how well Sanders can perform, and why he likely gains a 40-man roster spot, when he works from ahead in the count. He absolutely dominated throughout his five innings, punching out nine, while allowing little hard contact (and no hits).

Danis Correa kept the no-hitter going for one more inning. But Birmingham got to him in the 7th for a pair of runs. He stopped the bleeding there, and then Eury Ramos and Bryan Hudson finished off the win with solid 8th and 9th inning performances.

South Bend 5, Peoria 4 (10 Innings)

Game Recap

D.J. Herz was wild (5 BB) but remained his difficult-to-hit self. His wildness ran up his pitch count and knocked him out of the game after three innings. It forced the pen into a long night. And for a while it looked like it would come back to bite them as the normally reliable Nicholas Padilla and Hunter Bigge were each touched up for two runs in their two innings of work.

Meanwhile, the South Bend offense had no answer for Peoria starter Gordon Graceffo, who is on a fantastic run to begin the year and lowered his ERA to 0.65 with six shutout innings yesterday. It looked grim, but thankfully, the Chiefs pen was not as sharp.

Down four heading into the bottom of the 8th, the Cubs chipped with a run, but they still found themselves faced with a three run deficit when the bottom of the 9th came around. It would take only four batters to erase that deficit. After Fabian Pertuz struck out to open the inning, Yohendrick Pinango doubled, and then Alexander Canario and Matt Mervis delivered with back-to-back blasts to tie it and send the game to extras.

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

One of the pleasant surprises of the first month has been the breakout at the play by 3B Luis Verdugo. A fairly major signing out of Mexico a few years back, Verdugo has always been a top notch defender, but his bat has been slow to come around. In the complex leagues he tended to get off to slow starts before finishing strong, and then he struggled mightily in Myrtle Beach last year. The bat speed and projectable frame were always apparent, but his swing was a little long and his results rarely impressed. This year he looks to have added good weight to his frame, improved his approach, and cut down his swing a bit. It has translated into a .317/.388/.450 line and solidified his position as a prospect to track.

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

Cole Roederer and Kevin Made were activated from the IL and both delivered solid performances. There wasn’t much of note in this game beyond that. It was nice to see Roederer back on the field after he suffered an elbow injury at the end of May last season.

2022 NBA playoffs: Betting tips for 76ers-Heat, Mavericks-Suns Game 2son May 4, 2022 at 2:26 pm

All odds are provided by Caesars Sportsbook.

What you need to know for Wednesday’s playoff games

Backing off Brunson: The Mavs ranked fifth in percentage of points from beyond the arc during the regular season, something that they should look to embrace against the top-seeded Suns. But while Dallas has largely built a roster to embrace this style, Jalen Brunson might be the odd man out. Just one of Brunson’s 16 shots in Game 1 came from distance, and that isn’t an accident given he has shot 23.8% from 3-point range over the past two weeks. Brunson is not spreading the floor with Luka Doncic back in the lineup, he is no longer required to be a playmaker. The Mavs are clearly running their offense through Doncic, and that means Brunson will continue to draw tough matchups. He might play better tonight than he did in Game 1, but be careful in assuming he will bounce back and hit his scoring prop of 18.5 points against Phoenix’s strong defenders.

Go-to option: The Heat identified James Harden as the leader of the 76ers’ offense without Joel Embiid on the court Monday night, and that opened the door for Tobias Harris to produce. Harris had 27 points, 23 field goals + free throw attempts and four assists + turnovers. He led the team in minutes and shots while accounting for 5.6% of Philadelphia’s assists. With Embiid’s status still uncertain, Harris should be in a good spot to hit his scoring props in Game 2.

Tyler the creator: Tyler Herro has become quite the creator in the playoffs with Kyle Lowry out. His assist percentage leaps from 19% to 24.7% when Lowry is not on the floor, and he is likely to play around 30 minutes with a robust usage rate. Herro’s assist prop of 3.5 might be worth considering tonight.

Exploiting Jordan: The 76ers have been committed to starting DeAndre Jordan in Embiid’s absence and Bam Adebayo has dominated the soft matchup. The 76ers were minus-12 in Jordan’s first four minutes on the floor in Game 1 and minus-22 in his 17 total minutes on Monday night. Adebayo’s scoring and rebounding props stand out tonight as he continues to face one of the weakest defensive centers in the NBA.

DFS in DFS: Dorian Finney-Smith has averaged 12.4 rebounding chances per game during the playoffs, ranking second on the Mavericks behind Doncic. Dallas has relied on a smaller lineup recently, making Finney-Smith a viable building block in DFS competition given his ability to stretch the floor and clean the glass. He has averaged 28 combined points, assists and rebounds over the team’s past two playoff games, and his PAR prop of 19.5 appears achievable.

Breaking down today’s games

Philadelphia 76ers at Miami Heat
7:30 p.m ET, FTX Arena, Miami

Line: Heat (-8)
Money line: Heat (-440), 76ers (+340)
Total: 207.5 points
BPI Projected Total: 209.4 points
BPI Win%: Heat (80.3%)

Questionable: Tyler Herro (left ankle sprain), P.J. Tucker (calf), Caleb Martin (ankle), Gabe Vincent (knee irritation), Max Strus (hamstring)

Ruled out: Joel Embiid (concussion), Kyle Lowry (hamstring)
Note: BPI numbers factored in players who are ruled out but assumes questionable players will play

Notable: Six straight Heat games have gone under the point total, and that’s with Vegas dropping its projection in three straight games (four straight if tonight’s line closes under 208.5).

Compete for $40,000 throughout the NBA postseason! Make Your Picks

Best bet: Bam Adebayo over 29.5 points + rebounds. Philadelphia allowed 51 points on 32 defensive possessions during DeAndre Jordan‘s 17:17 on the floor. Doc Rivers said Jordan will start again in Game 2, meaning Adebayo should have a big night. — Eric Moody

Best bet: James Harden under 40.5 points + assists + rebounds. I’m going to keep hammering this until the market adjusts it to the mid 30s. Harden is clearly not the player he once was in terms of athleticism and explosion. Without that part of his offensive package, his overall efficiency has dipped precipitously. Add in the absence of Embiid — allowing the Heat defense to further focus on limiting Harden — and it’s a recipe for poor production from The Beard. Harden mustered up just 16 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists in Game 1 and came under this threshold in five of the 76ers’ seven postseason games. — Tyler Fulghum

Best bet: Tyler Herro over 18.5 points. The 76ers did not have an answer for Herro in Game 1. He became the first Heat player to record at least 25 points and five assists off the bench in a playoff game. Herro’s production should continue tonight with Lowry still out — Moody

Best bet: 76ers under 99.5 total points. The Heat have the second-best defensive rating in the playoffs thus far, allowing only 101.9 points per 100 possessions. In addition, both the Heat (94.7 possessions/game) and the 76ers (91.4 possessions/game) have played at a much slower pace in the postseason. Miami has been particularly stingy on defense at home, with their opponents averaging only 95.5 PPG and under 99.5 points in three of the past four home games. — Andre Snellings

Dallas Mavericks at Phoenix Suns
10 p.m ET, Footprint Center, Phoenix

Line: Suns (-6)
Money line: Suns (-260), Mavericks (+210)
Total: 216 points
BPI Projected Total: 213.2 points
BPI Win%: Suns (71.1%)

Notable: Five of Phoenix’s past six games have gone over the total, with three of those games going over by at least 10 points.

Best bet: Chris Paul over 9.5 assists. Game 1 between the Suns and Mavericks wasn’t as close as the score suggested. Paul dished out only three assists, and I doubt that will be the case in Game 2. He has averaged 9.0 APG in the playoffs over the past two seasons. — Eric Moody

Best bet: Luka Doncic over 51.5 points + assists + rebounds

While it’s reasonable to expect some regression from his 45 points, 12 rebounds and 8 assists in Game 1, we’re still talking about Luka Doncic here. He played 44 minutes in Game 1, took 30 shots and got to the free throw line 14 times. Unless the Suns are blowing the Mavs out of the water, it’s reasonable to expect similar usage in Game 2, even if his minutes drop a tick or two. Doncic has averaged 33.4 points, 9.3 rebounds and 8.8 assists in 17 career playoff games. This dude is just a big game hunter … and this is a pretty big game. — Fulghum

Best bet: Deandre Ayton over 29.5 points + rebounds. Dallas will have a hard time slowing Ayton down with Dwight Powell and Maxi Kleber. Ayton dominated the paint Monday night, going 9-for-15 while shooting over the Mavericks’ smaller defender. I expect more of the same in Game 2. — Moody

1 Related

Best bet: Devin Booker over 35.5 points + assists + rebounds. Booker played 38 minutes in Game 1 and looked much closer to his usual self than in the final game of the first round. Aside from the game in which Booker was injured and his first game back, he has averaged over 35.5 PAR in nine of 10 games. — Andre Snellings

3 free agent wide receivers the Chicago Bears can still signRyan Heckmanon May 4, 2022 at 12:30 pm

Chicago Bears (David Banks-USA TODAY Sports)

This past weekend, the Chicago Bears went an unforeseen route in the 2022 NFL Draft. First-year general manager Ryan Poles truly stuck to his strategy, much to many fans’ dismay.

However, Poles’ strategy could pay off in the long run. By going best player available and taking phenomenal value, he’s setting the Bears up with as many good football players as he can, regardless of position.

After drafting Kyler Gordon and Jaquan Brisker in the second round, Poles did indeed go wide receiver in the third, drafting Tennessee wide receiver Velus Jones Jr. While Jones wasn’t the prototypical receiver that fans wanted, he will surely make an impact.

Even after drafting Jones, though, the Bears could have used another rookie wideout, but Poles decided not to go that direction.

Wide receiver is a position the Chicago Bears could still address via free agency.

Currently, the Bears’ top four options at wideout are Darnell Mooney, Velus Jones Jr., Byron Pringle and Equanimeous St. Brown. The first three are fine options, but beyond Pringle, the Bears need help.

St. Brown has not been anywhere near a viable option over his young career, and the Bears still have to fill out a respectable depth chart. So, they must turn to free agency — or what’s left of it.

The Bears likely won’t land a name like Odell Beckham Jr., and even if he was interested, the Bears wouldn’t get him on the field until late in the year due to his ACL tear in the Super Bowl. So, beyond Beckham, there are a few key names the Bears could go after, and they would likely come at a decent price — if not a bargain.

We Are Going Backwards. Why are We Making Abortions Harder?

We Are Going Backwards. Why are We Making Abortions Harder?

Shortly after the news broke about the leaked Supreme Court draft decision that may overturn Roe v Wade, I received a call from a friend. He asked that I tell his story. I agreed to do so and present it to you below, in his words.

It was before 1973 so it was before Roe v Wade. That is as specific as I am prepared to get.

“She had been my girlfriend, then we broke up for a while until for a few months we rekindled. The first time was great but the second time around was different. There were plenty of reasons for that; our circumstances had changed, we had changed, and we no longer felt as close as we had before.

One fall day, quite out of the blue, she told me she would be going to New York for a few days. She had a girlfriend there that she wanted to visit. It wouldn’t be a long trip and I probably wouldn’t hear from her for a short time.

I was young and not that great at figuring out what people didn’t want me to figure out. But even I had to wonder. I was aware certain things were legal in New York, things that were only permissible in a handful of states, and Illinois was not one of those.

We were not sexually active together, but there had been that gap in our relationship, those few months of free fall. She had intimated that it had been a bit of a wild summer for her. The time since then would have been just enough for her to learn she was pregnant, back in those days before home EPT tests.

I never asked her. I didn’t know how to ask. To this day, I don’t know if her trip to New York was to terminate a pregnancy, a journey of hundreds of miles to get a safe, legal abortion. If that is what her trip was for, I hope at least she did have a friend in New York, someone to hold her hand.

The country had seemed to move forward since then. Now 50 years later are we right back where we started, lonely women on lonely journeys?

The Chicago Bears were not a good football team during the 2021 NFL season. Their first-round draft selection landed at seven but the New York Giants got to make the pick as a result of the trade that landed the Bears Justin Fields in the 2021 NFL Draft.

That meant that the Bears’ first pick available came in the second round. They had two in that round and did a very good job with them. A lot of people predicted that they would take an offensive lineman and/or a wide receiver with the picks but they didn’t.

Instead, the Bears opted to go with two defensive backs. The best player available mentality was there for Ryan Poles in the early stages of the draft. From there, had seemed to have a pretty good draft.

It will be a couple of years before we see how good it actually was but there is room for optimism right now. It was a nice draft for the spot that he was left in by the previous regime. Because of other trades made by both Poles and Pace, the Bears ended the weekend with 11 selections.

The Chicago Bears will benefit a lot from the 2022 NFL Draft selections.

That is going to help the team get better as they have more players available to them to try and help things move forward. There are a few players on the active roster that can help this team win if they continue to develop as well. These drafted players might be able to help a lot of them. These three active Bears payers will benefit the most by the 2022 NFL Draft:

White Sox righty Michael Kopech’s workload will be watched; his work has been stellar

Michael Kopech will be missed when the White Sox reel him in and sit him down as they manage his workload during his first planned full season of starting.

Big picture, as in the entirety of the 2022 season assuming October will exist for the Sox, as well as Kopech’s career, it’s probably for the best. Kopech pitched 69 1/3 innings when he went 4-3 with a 3.50 ERA in 40 relief appearances and four starts in 2021, and his career high for innings is 141 between Triple-A Charlotte and the Sox. And that was four seasons ago.

So there will be no exhausting the 26-year-old right-hander now. There was none of that on an awfully chilly, damp night at Wrigley Field. After throwing four-plus scoreless innings in a 3-1 victory against the Cubs, Kopech was lifted by manager Tony La Russa in favor of Reynaldo Lopez with a pitch count of 83. A 30-pitch third inning was mostly to blame on Kopech’s otherwise clean outing: No runs, four hits, four strikeouts, two walks.

Kopech lowered his ERA to a Bob Gibson-like ERA of 1.17. In his last nine starts dating to April 18 of last season, he’s 1-0 with a 1.46 ERA. How exactly the Sox manage Kopech’s innings remains to be seen. But it will happen. Right now, he’s at a modest 23.

“The plan is, you look to indicators,” manager Tony La Russa said before the game. “Innings is one indicator, it could be the number of pitches he’s thrown, the number of stressful innings. The last couple of games he’s had his delivery together and that’s less stressful.”

Whether that translates into skipped starts, double-digit days of rest between starts or some combination thereof, the Sox aren’t saying. Let’s just say 200 innings is out of the question and 140 feels more like it.

“Unless you’ve got a crystal ball, man, we just know we’re going to be careful with him,” La Russa said, “and in doubt, rather pitch somebody else than lose a pitcher.”

For all of the Sox’ early season woes — third baseman Jake Burger committed their major league leading 22nd error Tuesday, the offense has disappointed and injuries have weighed heavily — the right-handed trio of Dylan Cease, Kopech and Lucas Giolito has stood as a pillar of the starting rotation, with Lance Lynn expected to complement them when he returns from knee surgery at the end of the month.

There were a couple of sparks of offense on a miserable night to hit. Tim Anderson tied Andrew Vaughn for the team lead with his fourth homer, an opposite field liner into the right field bleachers against Keegan Thompson to give the Sox a 3-0 lead in the third inning. In the second, Jose Abreu reached on third baseman Patrick Wisdom’s error, advanced to third on Adam Engel’s double and scored on Jake Burger’s dribbling infield single. Catcher Reese McGuire’s squeeze bunt then scored Engel.

Thompson hit Harrison in the back leading off the fifth, and then clipped Anderson on the arm with his next pitch. Words were exchanged between Anderson and Thompson, but “my bad” and “you good” kept the peace.

A single by Yasmani Grandal loaded the bases with one out, but Abreu, batting .215, swung at the first pitch and rapped into a double play.

Nico Hoerner’s RBI double against Jose Ruiz cut the Sox lead to 3-1, but Aaron Bummer, Matt Foster and Liam Hendriks (sixth save) each pitched a perfect inning to nail down the win as the Sox improved to 10-13.

Watch Part 1 of Berkowitz’s two part interview w/Pastor Corey Brooks on why Woodlawn, Chatham & Englewood need a $35 million Center, Web / Cable

Watch Part 1 of Berkowitz’s two part interview w/Pastor Corey Brooks on why Woodlawn, Chatham & Englewood need a $35 million Center, Web / Cable

“Pastor Brooks believes his new $35 million Center will help transform gangbangers into responsible adult members of their community…”

You can watch our Pastor Corey Brooks show, Part 1, 24/7 by clicking here:

Part 1 of our interview with Pastor Brooks airs on cable in Chicago:

Tonight, 10:29 pm Ch  21 (CAN TV), as the 2nd segment  of a 2 hour IL Channel package. The package airs around the state this week on various outlets at various times.Saturday morning, 10:29 am, Ch 21 (as the 2nd segment of the package)Sunday morning, 9:59 am, Ch 19 (as the 2nd segment of the package)

The show focuses on Brooks’ plans for a $35 million Center to give new hope for tens of thousands living in Woodlawn and nearby areas on Chicago’s South Side.

Brooks believes the new “Leadership and Economic Opportunity Center” will help transform gangbangers into responsible adult members of their community, who will work in legitimate jobs to take care of themselves while developing the character and values needed to take care of their families and themselves.

These new leaders will learn from the Center not only a trade, a business or how to be an entrepreneur but, as Pastor Brooks said, but also learn values such as “How life will be so much better for their babies if they wait until they have a wife before they start a family.”

Young kids, adolescents and adults in the south side communities will participate in the same ordinary day to day activities of their middle- class peers across the city and state. These activities will include after school sports, clubs, and help with their academic studies, as well as help with getting or continuing jobs and vocational and other careers for the adults.

And, the help will extend to wrap-around services and counseling for ex-offenders who are ready to re-enter society and to take advantage of the “second chance,” being offered them.

Pastor Brooks has raised $11 million toward the Center in the last few months. He has lived out of a tent– no bathroom, no shower– on a make-shift roof top on the vacant site for the New Center across from his Church (at 66th and King Drive) for more than 100 days, getting many CEOs to spend a night or a lunch with him on the roof top. Brooks has vowed to stay on the roof until he has raised the entire $35 million needed to complete the Center.

Will the CEOs and perhaps politicians and office holders pitch in and find 24 million more dollars for Brooks’ Leadership and Economic Opportunity Center?

Watch this coming week’s Part 1 and the following week’s Part 2 of show host Berkowitz’s interview with Pastor Brooks to start answering those questions.

Brooks, Part 1 also airs this week in:

Aurora: Wed. & Saturday, 6 pm, Ch 10 andRockford: & nearby suburbs, Thursday, 8:30 pm, Ch. 17

Release Radar – 4/22/22 – Bay Ledges vs Wilco

Release Radar – 4/22/22 – Bay Ledges vs Wilco

Who Is Bay Ledges, that is the question? Bay Ledges is the musical brainchild of Zach Hurd, now a Los Angeles native who relocated from a small town in coastal Maine, in 2015. The four songs that make up the In Water EP are addicting slices of pop, to say the least. “In Water,” and Waterfalls” both rest on their own bouncy laurels, and are playlist worthy.

The Kooks and German duo Milky Chance team up on “Beautiful World” and it’s a great mix of both…worlds. They have a new album, 10 Tracks To Echo In The Dark, due out any day now.

Born Ruffians just embarked on their 34-city North American tour entitled JUICE, SQUEEZE & PULP, named after the release of their 2020-2021 trilogy series. “Chrysanthemums,” is their latest single that reminds me a bit of Django Django, in a good way of course.

Can you believe it’s the 20th anniversary of Wilco’s Yankee Hotel Foxtrot?

The band just wrapped up six shows (4 in NY and 2 in the Chi) where they played the whole record, front to back. This version of “Reservations” is from 2002, the same year they released this fan-favorite record. Taken from an anniversary package that will be released sometime in the near future, it serves as a reminder of how good this band is live.

I’m really enjoying “Chain Reaction” by Joy Downer, and Beck? Yep, the midnight vulture has a presence on this track that serves its purpose. Beck definitely has a knack for songwriting, and doesn’t overexpose, but helps Joy do her due diligence.

My daughter loves the Ella Fitzgerald, “Little People, Big Dreams” book and after reading her “All ABout Ella Story” and having Ella show up on my #RADAR this week, I thought it only proper to make her my Jazz Cut Of The Week. From Ella Fitzgerald Meets Irving Berlin, this is “Cheek To Cheek.” Enjoy!

Steph Curry, Jayson Tatum and more don stylish NBA playoff fitson May 4, 2022 at 4:50 am

Pregame fashion has become woven into the fabric of the NBA, with some players building a reputation for their wardrobe selections.

1 Related

The postseason has provided entertaining hoops on the court and eye-catching fits from players off it. Stars have shown up in various attire like boxing robes, vibrant coats and sweaters. Suits, stuffed animal accessories and luxury fashion brands have also made appearances on the pregame run these playoffs.

Here’s a round-by-round look at some of the more stylish clothing worn by NBA players this postseason:

Conference semifinals

Stephen Curry, Golden State Warriors, Game 2

Black was the color of choice for the NBA’s all-time 3-point leader heading into Tuesday’s game, with his coat looking extra roomy.

Jayson Tatum, Boston Celtics, Game 2

Tatum arrived at TD Garden on Tuesday sporting a jacket with numerous college logos. One of the featured decals is his alma mater, the Duke Blue Devils. Some other team emblems stitched on the piece include the Kentucky Wildcats, UConn Huskies, UCLA Bruins and Georgetown Hoyas.

Round 1

Jaren Jackson Jr., Memphis Grizzlies, Game 6

Grizzlies forward Jaren Jackson Jr. arrived before the series-clinching Game 6 against Minnesota wearing a multicolored Versace sweater and blue Air Jordan 1s.

After the game, Grizzlies teammate Dillon Brooks pitted his outfit against Jackson’s.

“First off, before you guys start, who has the better fit: me or Trip [Jackson]?” Brooks said.

Jackson’s fit didn’t win over Brooks, per the reporters. The 22-year-old didn’t seem bothered by the outcome.

“That’s because I’m experimental … I push boundaries,” Jackson said.

DeMar DeRozan, Chicago Bulls, Game 5

Ahead of the Bulls’ win-or-go-home contest against the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday, DeRozan honored Illinois music artist Juice WRLD with his outfit. The Chicago guard wore a Juice WRLD Galaxy Hoodie made by fashion company Vlone. Juice WRLD, whose real name is Jarad Higgins, died of a drug overdose in December 2019.

Ben Simmons, Brooklyn Nets, Game 3

Simmons’ look Saturday courtside against the Boston Celtics contrasted the Nets’ black and white uniforms perfectly.

Chris Paul, Phoenix Suns, Game 3

Ahead of Friday’s matchup against the New Orleans Pelicans, Paul put together an impressive suit combination. Quite the color choice.

Serge Ibaka, Milwaukee Bucks, Game 3

Ibaka has been an NBA fashion guru during his 14-year career, especially with his striking scarves during his days with the Toronto Raptors. His eccentric fashion made another appearance heading into Game 3 against the Chicago Bulls. The casual fit featured a brim hat, cardigan and a handbag.

Marcus Smart, Boston Celtics, Game 2

Smart won the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year award Monday, the first time a point guard has secured the honor since Gary Payton during the 1995-96 season. Given it is Smart’s first time winning DPOY, he donned a special robe that signified his accomplishment entering Game 2 against the Brooklyn Nets.

James Harden and Tyrese Maxey, Philadelphia 76ers, Game 1

Harden is no stranger to luxury couture. Last year, he was seen at Paris Fashion Week and was named to the board of Saks Fifth Avenue.

Ahead of his playoff debut with the Sixers, he sported the Louis Vuitton Blue & White “Puppet” Varsity Jacket. The colorful crocheted stuffed figures pinned on the coat really make the jacket stand out.

Maxey wore No. 3 before being drafted by Philly, but since that number is retired in honor of Allen Iverson, he had a decision to make.

“All my life, I’ve worn 3. Couldn’t get that one here,” said the first-round pick.

He paid tribute to the Sixers legend by wearing an Iverson jersey that featured several photos of the Basketball Hall of Famer.

It ended up being a fitting outfit choice. Maxey’s 38 points in Game 1 were the most in a playoff opener by a 76ers player since A.I. in 2003.

Jordan Clarkson and Bojan Bogdanovic, Utah Jazz, Game 1

Some players have an adventurous take on fashion, while others opt for the classic suit and tie look. With a little personalization, these Jazz stars had no issues rocking the tried-and-true combination.

Clarkson donned a white Midnight Studios button-up shirt with a black tie and slacks, with the leather harness adding a modern spin on an old classic.

Bogdanovic chose a more traditional route with his all-black ensemble and a pocket square that provided a splash of color.

Steph Curry, Golden State Warriors, Game 1

After missing a month with a foot injury, Curry returned to the Warriors’ lineup on April 16 against the Denver Nuggets. The coat he wore in his first game back took vibrancy to a new level.
