If you demand that Roe v. Wade be kept, first you should know what the hell it says.

If you demand that Roe v. Wade be kept, first you should know what the hell it says.

So many haven’t the faintest idea, as reflected by the deceptive reporting about public opinion.

Just one example: Politico, which was complicit in leaking the first draft of Justice Samuel Alito’s opinion that would overturn Roe v. Wade, put this headline on its deceptive spin on public support for the case:

Poll: Half of voters support maintaining Roe v. Wade:Only 11 percent say abortion should be “illegal in all cases.”

That is a startling false equivalence, designed to show overwhelming support for Roe.

If the reporting were unbiased and consistent, the 11 percent who say abortion should be illegal in all cases must be compared with the 25 percent who want it to be legal in all cases.

Those are the outliers, but if you want to actually know what Americans believe about abortion, you’ll find that polls consistently reveal that they want something in between. But that’s not what’s in Roe and its companion high court case, Doe v. Bolton. In fact, Roe has been redefined by a later decision, Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey

Yet, many of the people who are out of the street shouting their demands to politicize the Supreme Court and keep Roe probably haven’t even read Roe. They are out of step with the American public that, through the years, has consistently wanted some restrictions on abortion.

Gallup regularly polls about abortion. Some findings: A large plurality (48 percent) say it should be “legal only under certain circumstances.” Only 24 percent are “satisfied or somewhat satisfied” with “the nation’s policies regarding the abortion issue.” Equal numbers find abortion to be “morally” right or wrong.

Ask the shouters and sign toters if they support abortion in the second or third three months of pregnancy. I imagine that many will say, “Of course, anytime. Nobody can control my body.” That would put them way outside public opinion. Gallup says only 28 percent support of the former and 13 percent of the later.

Asking if you support Roe elicits meaningless answers, as meaningless as being asked if you’re pro-choice or pro-life. These are mere, pointless labels, yet the abortion industry and its media promoters want you to believe that they paint a complete picture of public opinion.

I wish partisans on both sides would actually read Roe and Doe in the original. Alito certainly did, and his first draft demolished Roe’s credibilty and the history it cited as it tried to make it seem like the “right to abortion” is grounded in American tradition.

Abortionists tried to make that argument in Roe, in a failed attempt to show that Roe is only reinforcing a practice that long had been considered to be “right.” You can hear the same  fallacious assertion in the liberal media and from the angry crowd on the street.

He laid out the detailed history and concluded: “The inescapable conclusion is that a right to abortion is not deeply rooted in the Nation’s history and traditions. On the contrary, an unbroken tradition of prohibiting abortion on pain of criminal punishment persisted from the earliest days of the common law until 1973.

This is important, because it was one of the principle legs of the pro-abortion argument. It’s unlikely this reasoning could be deleted by other justices because it’s fact.

Alito also demolishes the bogus stare decisis argument that is so often cited by pro-abortionists. Citing detailed court history, he concludes that the rule that it can never overturn a bad decision is “not an inexorable command.” He wrote:

When one of our constitutional decisions goes astray, the country is usually stuck with the bad decision unless we correct our own mistake. An erroneous constitutional decision can be fixed by amending the Constitution, but our Constitution is notoriously hard to amend…..Therefore, in appropriate circumstances we must be willing to reconsider and if necessary overrule constitutional decisions. Some of our most important constitutional decisions have overruled prior precedents.

He provided a long list of such cases, including Brown. v. Board of Education that ended “separate but equal” in schools, and West Coast Hotel Co. v. Parrish, that set aside a law setting minimum wages for women because it “violated the ‘liberty’ protected by the Fifth Amendment’s Due Process Clause.”

I’m still navigating the last half of the 98 pages, but I’ve read enough to know that this is a thoughtful and skillful argumentation that flies in the bald-faced lie that undoing Roe amounts to the politicalization of the court, the end of democracy, and cancelation of all the gains that women have made.

Never mind that the draft would not “ban abortions”; it would give the decision-making back to the people and out of the hands of black-robed, unelected elites who handed down the original Roe to start with. It is the essence of democracy, not its demise.

Not according to the hard-left Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) who unleashed a gawd-awful rant about how “extremist” judges were about to impose their “extremist” views on women. Good Lord, she was a tenured law professor; can’t she do better than that?

I guess she doesn’t have to when she and others believe they can win by talking stupid to people who don’t know any better.

And refuse to learn.

2022 figures to be season of built-in excuses for Bears, Justin FIelds

If the Bears’ recently concluded draft tells us anything, it’s that everyone involved has a very convenient out.

Fans have criticized new general manager Ryan Poles for not giving quarterback Justin Fields enough help, but if the Bears struggle in 2022, Poles can say, “Did you notice how empty my predecessor left the cupboard? I mean, it’s a freaking echo chamber in there! There are holes on both sides of the ball that need filling.”

Fields can say, “There’s no one to block for me, no one to catch my passes and no one I really want to get to know because they’ll all be gone next year … right? RIGHT?”

New offensive coordinator Luke Getsy can say, “These guys were so messed up by Matt Nagy’s bizarre offense that it has been next to impossible to teach them my attack, which is incredible, by the way. Also, Poles didn’t give me any players, and if I know what’s good for me, I’ll blame that on former GM Ryan Pace.”

New coach Matt Eberflus can say, “Remember the H.I.T.S. principle I unveiled at my introductory press conference, the one I want our players to follow? Hustle, Intensity, Takeaways and (playing) Smart? I’m changing it to reflect my feelings on our first two picks in the draft, a cornerback and a safety: Help In The Secondary? When we need offensive linemen and wide receivers? Are you bleepin’ kidding me?”

Bears chairman George McCaskey can say, “I’m busy on the new stadium right now, but if you leave your name and phone number, I’ll get back to you at the next press conference, tentatively scheduled for February, 2026.”

We know that everybody is going to say the right things during what figures to be another difficult season for the Bears — all those things about not being satisfied with the on-field performance but that it’s a process, that the organizational structure is in place and that, as painful as life is now, it’s going to be that much more joyful when the winning ensues. Behind all those words will be the lovely excuse of, “What did you expect after what the previous regime left us?”

Mostly, it will be one, big shrug: What’s a franchise to do?

No matter what happens to the Bears this season, you can count on it not being good for Nagy, who was fired as head coach after a 6-11 2021. If the Bears somehow win in 2022, he’ll look bad. If Fields improves, Nagy will be the guy who held him back. If Getsy’s offense is creative and takes advantage of Fields’ athleticism, Nagy will be considered even more of a tactical failure than he already is.

And if the Bears lose a lot and Fields struggles a lot, it will be because Nagy did such a number on the kid that it will take years to deprogram him.

So the former coach can’t win. It’s not entirely fair, but given the choice between blaming the newcomer or blaming his fired predecessor, rabid fans are always going to choose the idiot who was sent away. They’re going to choose hope, even trace amounts of hope.

The immediate fear is not that Fields will turn into another Mitch Trubisky but rather that it will take several years to find out if he’s any good. There’s a decent chance that, because the offensive talent is so thin, 2022 will be another lost year for him, the way 2021 was. This won’t be a concern to the true believers, the ones who are sure that Fields is not just going to be great but already is great except to those with poor eyesight and obvious character flaws.

If Fields has the same numbers he had last season (seven touchdown passes, 10 interceptions, 73.2 passer rating), those true believers will fear not. Despite the uncomfortable evidence in front of them, they’ll be able to hold to the idea that good times are indeed ahead, provided Poles finds Fields some help. If he can’t, the McCaskeys will wait another five years to ask why not.

This will be the season of built-in free passes, spoken and unspoken. When will those involved have to take responsibility for the problems on the field. The 2023 season? Are we really not supposed to criticize Fields this season if he flounders again? When does it stop being someone else’s fault?

Somewhere, Nagy is wondering when it will stop being his fault. If the current temperature in Chicago is any indication, the answer is never.

CELEBRATED ARTIST NICK CAVE TO BRING FIRST RETROSPECTIVE, FOROTHERMORE, TO MCA CHICAGO

CELEBRATED ARTIST NICK CAVE TO BRING FIRST RETROSPECTIVE, FOROTHERMORE, TO MCA CHICAGO

Nick Cave, Photo: Sandro Miller

The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (MCA) today announced that tickets for Forothermore, the first career-spanning retrospective of internationally renowned, Chicago-based artist Nick Cave, will go on sale April 6. The most comprehensive survey of Cave’s work to date, the exhibition is curated by Naomi Beckwith, former Manilow Senior Curator, MCA Chicago and will be on view at the MCA from May 14 to October 2, 2022.

“I’m thrilled to be sharing my career’s work in my chosen hometown. I don’t take the gravity of this moment for granted,” said Cave. “From the MCA to the DuSable and beyond, this community and city-wide project is the realization of a dream that could only happen in Chicago — this way, with this brilliant team and throughout this great city.”

The celebration continues with the ArtEdge: Celebrating Nick Cave gala on May 21 in the Roundhouse at the DuSable Museum of African American History, featuring a presentation of The Color Is, a performative fashion experience, featuring an 80-look production by Nick Cave and Jack Cave. Produced by the MCA, The Color Is is an experience based on the concept of freedom from limits and described as a couture-created body of work that is an amalgamation of cultures, times and ideas, emancipating them from the limits of regular classifications. Gala tickets will be available alongside the exhibition on-sale, beginning April 6.

In addition to the performance at ArtEdge: Celebrating Nick Cave, there will be two public performances of The Color Is at the DuSable on Sunday, May 22 at 5:00 p.m. and Monday, May 23 at 7:30 p.m.

Running concurrently with Forothermore, Cave will also debut a new video projection for Art on theMART, the world’s largest permanent digital art projection, as part of its Summer 2022 programming. The to-be-titled work, along with Cave’s Drive-By-Remix (2017), will be shown twice nightly on theMART’s facade from May 6 through September 7, 2022.

Following its tenure at the MCA, a reimagined version of Forothermore will travel to the Guggenheim in New York City for an exhibition opening November 18, 2022, and is also curated by Naomi Beckwith, who currently serves as Deputy Director and Jennifer and David Stockman Chief Curator, Guggenheim Museum.

“Nick Cave’s utopian vision and gift for magical material transformation is only matched by his generosity as a mentor, educator and activist,” said Beckwith. “I am thrilled to see that the seeds that he planted in Chicago have flourished into a citywide celebration that not only honors his inspiring work but is a gift to his adopted hometown. Equally important is that audiences at the Guggenheim New York will also have the opportunity to experience a fulsome view of Nick’s artistic and life practice. Nick is an artist who allows all his audiences to celebrate, mourn, and learn with and from each other; a kind of social healing that is so necessary as the world contends with continued physical and political isolation.”

For over three decades, Cave has centered his artistic practice on community building and addressing pressing societal issues related to race, gender, sexuality and class. First coming to prominence with his acclaimed Soundsuits series, Cave is celebrated for his projects that eloquently blend community building with vibrant works of art across disciplines, including immersive installations, textural sculptures, impeccably crafted fashions and dynamic videos and performances. In addition to being an artist, Cave is also a prominent activist and educator – qualities that make his work a true representation of the MCA’s mission says the museum’s Pritzker Director, Madeleine Grynsztejn.

“The MCA has committed itself to presenting local Chicago artists whose works elevate the global discourse surrounding contemporary art and social practice, including, among others, Kerry James Marshall, Virgil Abloh and now Nick Cave,” said Grynsztejn. “This recent history of curatorial programming is not only indicative of this institution’s ongoing efforts to surface the critical art histories being formed within Chicago but also serves as a testament to this city’s vibrant ecosystem of artists, galleries, universities, and museums that have supported such a thriving artist community.”

Reflecting the artist’s three-dimensional approach, the exhibition is designed as an immersive journey that begins with Spinner Forest and continues in the galleries with the artist’s cast bronze sculptures, tapestries made of sequined garments, color-saturated videos, and breath- taking installations such as the larger-than-life Beaded Cliff Wall that is comprised of millions of colorful pony beads threaded into shoelaces by hand. Displayed against a backdrop of floor-to- ceiling geometric vinyl wallpaper collaboratively designed with the artist’s partner Bob Faust, Forothermore traces artistic themes and Cave’s evolving interests over three decades, with works from as early as 1989.

Forothermore features over a dozen works from Cave’s Soundsuit series in addition to the debut of his new series, Soundsuits 9:29. The head-to-toe garments are constructed with a mélange of materials, among them beads, pearls, wire, feather, sequins, synthetic hair, and twigs. Originally created by Cave in response to the Rodney King beating in 1992, Soundsuits 9:29 addresses today’s heightened social unrest and reckoning for racial justice in response to the death of George Floyd.

Another highlight of the exhibition is Cave’s immersive 14-channel, room-sized video installation Hy-Dyve, that is presented in the adjacent fourth floor gallery and surrounds visitors with projections of flowing water, blinking eyes and mysterious creatures and patterns. Forothermore also includes Cave’s recent series of sculptures of carved and cast bronze hands, heads and limbs decorated with flowers, candles and found objects such as used shotgun shells.

Nick Cave: Forothermore is presented in the Griffin Galleries of Contemporary Art on the museum’s fourth floor.

In addition to the MCA and Art on theMART, Cave’s work can be found in locations across the city of Chicago, including Free/Formal at the Garfield Green Line station, Rapt on the Mile at 679 N. Michigan Avenue, Wallworks at 21c Museum Hotel Chicago and Tondo at One Bennett Park.

About Nick Cave

Nick Cave (b. 1959, Fulton, MO; lives and works in Chicago, IL) is an artist, educator and foremost a messenger, working between the visual and performing arts through a wide range of mediums including sculpture, installation, video, sound and performance. Cave is well known for his Soundsuits, sculptural forms based on the scale of his body, initially created in direct response to the police beating of Rodney King in 1991. Soundsuits camouflage the body, masking and creating a second skin that conceals race, gender and class, forcing the viewer to look without judgment. They serve as a visual embodiment of social justice that represent both brutality and empowerment.

High school basketball: Unheralded club basketball team Full Package opens eyes in Fort Wayne

The spring portion of the grassroots basketball season turned to the annual Run ‘N Slam event this past weekend in Fort Wayne, Ind., where several Illinois club basketball programs played.

Here is a City/Suburban Hoops Report Three-Pointer solely dedicated to the under-the-radar team and players that stole the show.

No. 1

While the Run ‘N Slam isn’t quite as loaded or heralded as it once was, it’s still an opportunity for so many different teams from geographical areas to come together and compete.

That includes many programs from different shoe-sponsored leagues that typically don’t face one another.

There were teams from both the Under Armour Association and Nike’s EYBL, which included perennial Illinois AAU powerhouses Meanstreets, Mac Irvin Fire and the Illinois Wolves. The top college prospects in the state fill those rosters.

But it was an Illinois program without a shoe deal or big-named prospects that outshined the more heavily hyped teams and players.

Full Package Athletics, which is based in the northern suburbs, reached the Run ‘N Slam title game. Along the way Full Package took down a team from the EYBL circuit (Indy Heat), Adidas circuit (Reach Legends) and the Under Armour sponsored Illinois Wolves in the semifinals before falling in the Platinum Division championship game.

In the title game, Full Package fell 70-67 to the Midwest Basketball club, which is led by Indiana (Gabe Cupps) and Kentucky (Reed Sheppard) commitments.

In addition, another Illinois team without a shoe deal, Young & Reckless, captured the Gold Division championship on Sunday.

Full Package may or may not have a player who ends up playing Division I basketball. There are two or three on the cusp of grabbing more recruiting attention at that level. But it’s a team loaded with accomplished and impactful high school basketball players from this past season. They play hard, they play together and they will play college basketball at some level.

The headliners are familiar names to only the avid high school basketball fan.

New Trier shooter Jake Fiegen was instrumental in helping the Trevians to a 30-win season and sectional title game appearance. He displayed his shooting prowess throughout the weekend.

Lemont twins Mantas and Rokas Castillo helped fuel an improbable state tournament run this past March. The feisty, competitive guards led Lemont to a Class 3A super-sectional appearance where it fell to Simeon.

Benet’s Niko Abusara and the Rolling Meadows trio of 6-7 Mark Nikolich-Wilson, 6-4 Foster Ogbonna and 6-7 Tsvet Sotirov are four other key players for a Full Package team that went 5-1 over the weekend.

No. 2

The breakout player in Fort Wayne this past weekend was Mark Nikolich-Wilson of Rolling Meadows. He was outstanding in leading his Full Package team to a title.

Nikolich-Wilson was a productive player for the Mustangs all season as part of a solid supporting cast to star Cameron Christie. As a junior he averaged 12 points and nine rebounds a game while showcasing an arsenal of all-around basketball skill.

The stout 6-7 Nikolich-Wilson is as skilled of a big man as you will find, capable of burying a three, handling the ball in the open floor and using nifty footwork, craftiness and touch around the basket. He plays physical while also using high basketball I.Q. and an understanding of the game that is of great value for any team he plays for.

Plus, he’s worked his tail off over the past year to improve his body, conditioning and craft.

Nikolich-Wilson, who will be a difference-maker next season for one of the best teams in the state, has clearly established himself as a scholarship-type prospect. Division II programs should be heavily invested.

No. 3

When watching Benet this past season, from an evaluator’s perspective, junior Niko Abusara screamed potential. The upside in Abusara was undeniable with his length, lively body and bounce off the floor.

He put together a solid junior season for the Redwings, earning all-conference recognition in the East Suburban Catholic Conference. But expect a breakout senior campaign this winter as Abusara has grown to 6-4 and is showcasing not only more athleticism but more confidence as well.

Abusara impressed in Fort Wayne during Full Package’s run, including showing an evolving perimeter shot andhighlight reel plays in getting to the basket.

A liar, a puppet and a beer guzzling rapist walk into a bar…

A liar, a puppet and a beer guzzling rapist walk into a bar…

While the above title may sound like the beginning of a hilarious joke, there’s nothing funny about it. Incredibly, it’s the makeup of our Supreme Court.

While the pejorative liar could apply to most of them, I was specifically referring to Amy Coney Barret in the title. I like puppet and beer guzzling rapist for Thomas and Kavanaugh.

In 1991 Anita Hill accused then-SCOTUS nominee, Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment in a hearing before 14 White men.

Hill’s testimony, unlike any we’d ever seen before was both credible and riveting. There is no doubt in my mind that Thomas did exactly what she said he did, which is probably how you feel about O.J. Simpson.

Thomas was (and still is) an egotistical, entitled, misogynistic jerk and that isn’t even the worst of it. He refuses to recuse himself from cases involving his wife’s lucrative lobbying efforts and acts as an avenging angel for her far right religious dogma.

Thomas kept his mouth shut for the first decade of his tenure and that was when he sounded the most intelligent. Like a football linebacker, Thomas needs to let science study his brain for anomalies, atrophy and disease.

Sooner rather than later.

Brett Kavanaugh was accused by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford of attempting to rape her at a college party. Like Hill’s, Ford’s testimony was unprecedented, credible and riveting.

Had he succeeded in his attempt to rape the young Ms. Ford, Kavanaugh would indeed have been a rapist, which begs the following questions:

1. Why does a rapist get a pass for being bad at it?

2.Why did we not hear from Mark Judge, Kavanaugh’s best friend, accomplice and lookout?

You can read more about Kavanaugh by clicking HERE or HERE.

If this court represents the best we’ve got in jurisprudence, then America is in deep doo doo. Justice Barrett has spent some time trying to convince people that SCOTUS is not just a bunch of political hacks, but her protests ring hollow.

There is modicum of truth though, in that the court is less politically motivated than it is biblically motivated. We’re only about one vote away from something that will make sharia law look like anarchy.

Monday’s leak of a soon-to-be-released ruling that will overturn half a century of human rights (as Hillary Clinton told China, Women’s rights are human rights.) indicates the court will set aside the 1973 landmark decision of Roe v Wade.

In his brief, Justice Sam Alito said that Roe was decided incorrectly in the first place, that the Constitution does not specifically address abortion and it is not deeply rooted in this nation’s history and tradition.

Over 200 million Americans were born after 1973, so Roe v Wade has been the law of the land for their entire lives. I’d say that’s a pretty deeply rooted tradition.

And while abortion is not specifically mentioned in the Constitution, neither are AR-15s, although some 10 million of them are legally owned by our countrymen.

Let’s face it, Supreme Court justices are only human and subject to mistakes. In 2008 Antonin Scalia said that the right to bear arms applies to individuals, not just to organized state militias, as SPECIFICALLY STATED in the 2nd Amendment’s first four words: A well organized militia

In 2010 (Citizens United v. FEC) SCOTUS ruled that rich (and very rich) people and corporations could contribute unlimited, untraceable amounts of money to political organizations.

Can you think of any tobacco, oil or pharmaceutical company that would benefit from such a ruling? How about the gun lobby?

Neil Gorsuch was nominated by Donnie Trump to replace Antonin Scalia after Moscow Mitch McConnell delayed the nomination process for a year to prevent then-President Barack Obama from executing his constitutionally mandated duty to appoint a justice.

Swing voter Anthony Kennedy was replaced by beer guzzling rapist, Brett Kavanaugh after a sham trial exposed Kavanaugh’s assault on Dr. Christine Blasey Ford.

Lying liar Amy Coney Barrett replaced the cherished Ruth Bader Ginsburg in a confirmation process rushed through by McConnell, who used an excuse completely contradictory to the one he used to rob Barrack Obama of a nomination.

If ever there was an illegitimate Supreme Court, this is it. It’s composed of two judges who shouldn’t have been appointed by the previous president and misogynist who was narrowly confirmed (52-48) and should have had his nomination withdrawn by then-President Bush (41).

They use their shadow docket to rule on cases having massive impact, but without the requirement of any reasoning whatsoever.

In a country where we have limited maternity care for the poor, no federally mandated paid maternity or family leave, no universal health care or subsidized child care, we just made life a living hell for a girl who may be raped by her father and forced to carry that baby to full term.

There’s more than a tiny bit of irony in the fact that the same folks who don’t think that they should be forced to wear a mask or get a vaccine to save theirs or other’s lives are now rejoicing that state governments will soon control women’s uteruses.

I wish someone could explain to me how any of that is pro-life.

Chicago Bears Draft Grades: How Did Ryan Poles Do In His First Draft as GM?Drew Krieson May 4, 2022 at 3:00 pm

Last weekend’s NFL Draft came and went faster than Tom Brady’s return from retirement. And despite the quiet lead up to this year’s event, the 2022 NFL Draft didn’t fail to make some noise once the clock started rolling. There were plenty of trades made on night one to kick the weekend off. Two of the bigger ones involved receivers A.J. Brown and Marquise Brown being sent to new teams. But around here, we’re only focused on one team and how they drafted. So, let’s dive right into some Chicago Bears draft grades for Ryan Poles first go-around!

Round 2 – A Secondary Rebuild

Our first set of Chicago Bears draft grades starts with the selections the team made in round 2 of the NFL draft. With the 39th and 48th overall pick in round two, the Bears looked to address some needs they had in the secondary.

For their first pick of the NFL draft, the Bears selected cornerback Kyler Gordon from Washington. Now, according to Poles, having Gordon available at 39 was something the team wasn’t really expecting. They ran a few mock drafts, and Gordon was only available with the 39th pick in one of them. Because of that, Poles essentially told everyone to ignore him, as it was better to act like he wouldn’t be there. That all changed on Friday night though. Gordon projects to have an immediate impact on the defensive with a skillset that’s suited to fit an Eberflus zone-defense. Over time, the team hopes he can develop into a full-time star in the secondary.

With their second pick, Poles and the Bears continued to build their secondary by selecting Jaquan Brisker, a safety from Penn State. Like Gordon, the hopes are that Brisker starts contributing right away on the field come gametime. The Bears are also super high on Brisker for what he can bring to the locker room and the team’s culture, as he’s extremely driven and has the traits of a leader.

For the second round, we’re giving out a strong A for the first of our Chicago Bears draft grades.

Rounds 3 & 5 – Addressing the Offense

Up next comes the picks from rounds 3 and 5 for our Chicago Bears draft grades.

With their third round pick at #71, the Bears switched things up and selected Velus Jones Jr., a wide receiver from Tennessee. At 25 years old, Jones is an older rookie who has plenty of speed to do some damage in the NFL. The Bears are pretty high on him, and the rest of us fans should be too. Jones isn’t necessarily coming in as the #1 guy for Fields, but it doesn’t mean he can’t have some impact as a dynamic weapon for our young QB.

The Bears next picks in round 5 were two that they didn’t initially have coming into the 2022 NFL draft. After some savvy maneuvering by Poles, the Bears traded away picks 148 and 150 in the second round to acquire additional draft capital in the later rounds. This ended up with them having picks 168 and 174 in the fifth round.

They used those two picks to select Braxton Jones, an offensive tackle from Southern Utah, and Dominique Robinson, an edge rusher from Miami Ohio. Like many fifth round picks, Jones expects to develop as an offensive lineman before seeing serious reps as a starter. He has some promising speed, and one trait that you can’t teach, coach, or train for: arm length.

As for Dominique Robinson, this new pass rusher is another development project the Bears hope to mold into a starter down the road. He’s known for his athletic traits, and up until 2020 he played as a 6’ 5”, 252-pound wide receiver. How would you like to guard that? The rookie will have plenty of opportunity to learn and grow behind the Bears strong pass rushing core that’s lead by Robert Quinn.

For rounds 3 and 5, we’re going to go ahead and give the team a B- for the second of our Chicago Bears draft grades.

Rounds 6 & 7 – The Gem Hunt

Last, but certainly not least, comes the six draft picks the Bears used in rounds 6 and 7. Initially, Poles only had one selection past round 6, with pick number 186. But, like we talked about earlier, he turned to trades to acquire five more picks in the latter rounds. Here’s who we selected:

6th Round, Pick 186: Zachary Thomas – Offensive Lineman from San Diego State

Pick 203: Trestan Ebner – Running Back from Baylor

Pick 207: Doug Cramer – Center from Illinois

7th Round, Pick 226: Ja’Tyre Carter – Offensive Lineman from Southern

Pick 254: Elijah Hicks – Safety from California

Pick 255: Trenton Gill – Punter from NC State

That’s quite a few guys if you ask us. Let’s start with the sixth round picks:

Zachary Thomas is a young lineman Poles sees as a piece of depth that can develop into a starter down the road with his athletic capabilities. Trestan Ebner projects to make a splash on special teams as a return man. He had three kickoff returns in 2022 with Baylor. Doug Kramer was the Bears last selection of the sixth round. As a quick and smart center, the Bears hope to watch him grow and develop early in his career.

At pick 226, Ja’Tyre Carter is another o-lineman that will need to develop in order to produce in the NFL. What he lacks in speed, he makes up for in pure strength, size, and length. Elijah Hicks, the second safety the Bears chose in 2022, is a young prospect who will be competing for a roster spot in the Bear’s needy secondary. And finally, Trenton Gill, a punter from NC State who averaged 45.1 yards per punt his senior year. He’ll look to compete with Ryan Winslow for the starting job now that Pat O’Donnell is no longer with the team.

For rounds 6 and 7, we’re putting some weight on the sheer volume of picks and giving out another B- for this Chicago Bears draft grade.

All-in-all, we give the team a B for the last of our Chicago Bears draft grades. While they didn’t go all-in on some weapons for Fields, they did address plenty of important concerns at the secondary and o-line. While a lot of their picks came in the later rounds, the Bears should be hopeful that at least one or two turn into serious starters in a few years. It’ll be up to the new coaching staff to help the young additions reach their potential. But, with Poles and Eberflus leading the way, our hopes are high that us Bears fans will have a lot more to cheer for soon!

Betting tips for 76ers-Heat, Mavericks-Suns Game 2son May 4, 2022 at 4:24 pm

All odds are provided by Caesars Sportsbook.

What you need to know for Wednesday’s playoff games

Backing off Brunson: The Mavs ranked fifth in percentage of points from beyond the arc during the regular season, something that they should look to embrace against the top-seeded Suns. But while Dallas has largely built a roster to embrace this style, Jalen Brunson might be the odd man out. Just one of Brunson’s 16 shots in Game 1 came from distance, and that isn’t an accident given he has shot 23.8% from 3-point range over the past two weeks. Brunson is not spreading the floor with Luka Doncic back in the lineup, he is no longer required to be a playmaker. The Mavs are clearly running their offense through Doncic, and that means Brunson will continue to draw tough matchups. He might play better tonight than he did in Game 1, but be careful in assuming he will bounce back and hit his scoring prop of 18.5 points against Phoenix’s strong defenders.

Go-to option: The Heat identified James Harden as the leader of the 76ers’ offense without Joel Embiid on the court Monday night, and that opened the door for Tobias Harris to produce. Harris had 27 points, 23 field goals + free throw attempts and four assists + turnovers. He led the team in minutes and shots while accounting for 5.6% of Philadelphia’s assists. With Embiid’s status still uncertain, Harris should be in a good spot to hit his scoring props in Game 2.

Tyler the creator: Tyler Herro has become quite the creator in the playoffs with Kyle Lowry out. His assist percentage leaps from 19% to 24.7% when Lowry is not on the floor, and he is likely to play around 30 minutes with a robust usage rate. Herro’s assist prop of 3.5 might be worth considering tonight.

Exploiting Jordan: The 76ers have been committed to starting DeAndre Jordan in Embiid’s absence and Bam Adebayo has dominated the soft matchup. The 76ers were minus-12 in Jordan’s first four minutes on the floor in Game 1 and minus-22 in his 17 total minutes on Monday night. Adebayo’s scoring and rebounding props stand out tonight as he continues to face one of the weakest defensive centers in the NBA.

DFS in DFS: Dorian Finney-Smith has averaged 12.4 rebounding chances per game during the playoffs, ranking second on the Mavericks behind Doncic. Dallas has relied on a smaller lineup recently, making Finney-Smith a viable building block in DFS competition given his ability to stretch the floor and clean the glass. He has averaged 28 combined points, assists and rebounds over the team’s past two playoff games, and his PAR prop of 19.5 appears achievable.

— Jim McCormick & Kyle Soppe

Breaking down today’s games

Philadelphia 76ers at Miami Heat
7:30 p.m ET, FTX Arena, Miami

Line: Heat (-8)
Money line: Heat (-440), 76ers (+340)
Total: 207.5 points
BPI Projected Total: 209.4 points
BPI Win%: Heat (80.3%)

Questionable: Tyler Herro (left ankle sprain), P.J. Tucker (calf), Caleb Martin (ankle), Gabe Vincent (knee irritation), Max Strus (hamstring)

Ruled out: Joel Embiid (concussion), Kyle Lowry (hamstring)
Note: BPI numbers factored in players who are ruled out but assumes questionable players will play

Notable: Six straight Heat games have gone under the point total, and that’s with Vegas dropping its projection in three straight games (four straight if tonight’s line closes under 208.5).

Compete for $40,000 throughout the NBA postseason! Make Your Picks

Best bet: Bam Adebayo over 29.5 points + rebounds. Philadelphia allowed 51 points on 32 defensive possessions during DeAndre Jordan‘s 17:17 on the floor. Doc Rivers said Jordan will start again in Game 2, meaning Adebayo should have a big night. — Eric Moody

Best bet: James Harden under 40.5 points + assists + rebounds. I’m going to keep hammering this until the market adjusts it to the mid 30s. Harden is clearly not the player he once was in terms of athleticism and explosion. Without that part of his offensive package, his overall efficiency has dipped precipitously. Add in the absence of Embiid — allowing the Heat defense to further focus on limiting Harden — and it’s a recipe for poor production from The Beard. Harden mustered up just 16 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists in Game 1 and came under this threshold in five of the 76ers’ seven postseason games. — Tyler Fulghum

Best bet: Tyler Herro over 18.5 points. The 76ers did not have an answer for Herro in Game 1. He became the first Heat player to record at least 25 points and five assists off the bench in a playoff game. Herro’s production should continue tonight with Lowry still out — Moody

Best bet: 76ers under 99.5 total points. The Heat have the second-best defensive rating in the playoffs thus far, allowing only 101.9 points per 100 possessions. In addition, both the Heat (94.7 possessions/game) and the 76ers (91.4 possessions/game) have played at a much slower pace in the postseason. Miami has been particularly stingy on defense at home, with their opponents averaging only 95.5 PPG and under 99.5 points in three of the past four home games. — Andre Snellings

Dallas Mavericks at Phoenix Suns
10 p.m ET, Footprint Center, Phoenix

Line: Suns (-6)
Money line: Suns (-260), Mavericks (+210)
Total: 216 points
BPI Projected Total: 213.2 points
BPI Win%: Suns (71.1%)

Notable: Five of Phoenix’s past six games have gone over the total, with three of those games going over by at least 10 points.

Best bet: Chris Paul over 9.5 assists. Game 1 between the Suns and Mavericks wasn’t as close as the score suggested. Paul dished out only three assists, and I doubt that will be the case in Game 2. He has averaged 9.0 APG in the playoffs over the past two seasons. — Eric Moody

Best bet: Luka Doncic over 51.5 points + assists + rebounds

While it’s reasonable to expect some regression from his 45 points, 12 rebounds and 8 assists in Game 1, we’re still talking about Luka Doncic here. He played 44 minutes in Game 1, took 30 shots and got to the free throw line 14 times. Unless the Suns are blowing the Mavs out of the water, it’s reasonable to expect similar usage in Game 2, even if his minutes drop a tick or two. Doncic has averaged 33.4 points, 9.3 rebounds and 8.8 assists in 17 career playoff games. This dude is just a big game hunter … and this is a pretty big game. — Fulghum

Best bet: Deandre Ayton over 29.5 points + rebounds. Dallas will have a hard time slowing Ayton down with Dwight Powell and Maxi Kleber. Ayton dominated the paint Monday night, going 9-for-15 while shooting over the Mavericks’ smaller defender. I expect more of the same in Game 2. — Moody

Best bet: Devin Booker over 35.5 points + assists + rebounds. Booker played 38 minutes in Game 1 and looked much closer to his usual self than in the final game of the first round. Aside from the game in which Booker was injured and his first game back, he has averaged over 35.5 PAR in nine of 10 games. — Andre Snellings

Two-time NBA champion Kevin Durant has been named as a minority owner of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) club NJ/NY Gotham FC, it was announced Wednesday.

Thirty Five Ventures (35V), which was co-founded by the Brooklyn Nets star and entrepreneur Rich Kleiman, becomes the third different party to acquire a stake in the club since March.

Durant is the latest sporting figure to obtain a stake in the NWSL club after ex-U.S. women’s national team star Carli Lloyd also became a minority owner six months after retiring from the game. The NBA star joins an ownership group led by New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and his wife, Tammy. The other minority owners are Kristin Bernert, Karen Bryant and Ed Nalbandian.

“As a New York-based company, the opportunity for us to partner with a forward-thinking team like Gotham FC was a no brainer,” 35V co-founder Rich Kleiman said in a news release.

“There’s been so much growth in the NWSL in recent years, and the chance to be a part of that growth and work directly with the Gotham FC executive team and players is really exciting.”

Gotham managing owner Nalbandian added: “This is another big step forward for our franchise. Kevin and Rich are two of the most influential people in sports and their work in the business and entertainment world and their significant investment in Gotham FC illustrates the potential of our club.

“They will be tremendous resources to the club across multiple areas and we’re excited to welcome them to the Gotham FC family.”

Gotham will host its first home match of the 2022 campaign against the North Carolina Courage on May 14.
