Agenda: Fri 7/15/22

There’s no shortage of outdoor theater in Chicago in the summer, and Midsommer Flight is right in the mix with (appropriately enough) A Midsummer Night’s Dream, opening tonight at 6 PM in Lincoln Park (behind and across the street from the Lincoln Park Cultural Center at 2045 N. Lincoln Park West) and running there through the weekend before moving on to more free performances through 8/21 at four other city parks. (They return to Lincoln Park 7/29-7/31.) Midsummer was the first show ever produced by the company back in 2012, and it’s the first time they’ve been back in the parks since the 2020 COVID-19 shutdown. Founding artistic director Beth Wolf’s production emphasizes natural sunlight and sound (i.e., no amplification), as of course was the case in Shakespeare’s day. Your “groundling” experience can be enhanced by packing a picnic and bringing in blankets or chairs as the comedy about scheming fairies, bumbling “rude mechanicals,” and impetuous young lovers unfolds. For more information and complete schedule, see midsommerflight.com. (KR)

From 7-11 PM, Heaven Gallery (1550 N. Milwaukee, second floor) celebrates the opening of the Nubes Art Fair, which centers BIPOC curators and BIPOC-led galleries in Chicago. Having survived over 20 years in Wicker Park, Heaven Gallery is working to protect itself from displacement while advancing equity in the arts, so the Nubes (Spanish for “clouds”) Art Fair is attempting to be a “parting of clouds into a new realm of infinite possibility.” Participants include Heaven Gallery, LVL3, the Silver Room, Connect Gallery, the Honeycomb Network, Jude Gallery, Atl_, the Franklin, AMFM, Rupture, Chicago Art Department, the Chicago Artists Coalition, Chuquimarca, and Sin Cinta Previa. There will also be curated booths by Juan Arango Palacios and Makeba Kedem-DuBose. DJ James Vincent and DJ Blesstonio provide music for this reception, and the fair will be on view through Sun 8/28 (gallery hours are generally Fri-Sat, 1-6 PM and Sun, 1-5 PM, but contact the gallery to confirm or make an appointment). (MC)

Artist and designer Bun Stout hosts a fashion show tonight at Co-Prosperity (3219 S. Morgan) in conjunction with their exhibition “Living Legend.” Stout is known in nightlife for designing intricately outlandish looks for performers such as Irregular Girl and Celeste featuring lots of hand beading, shimmer fabrics, plastic textures, and frosting aesthetics. At 8 PM, five models will bring Stout’s creations to life in a “mixed reality” runway walk where all the looks include AR features, accompanied by live music by Fetter. If you can’t make it in person, the presentation will stream live at Lumpen TV (viewable through Twitch). The clothes will live in CoPro’s windows as part of the exhibition, and are viewable through Sun 8/14. (MC)

Outdoor music festivals continue this weekend come rain or shine, and that includes the first reggaeton festival to hit Chicago, Mas Flow, happening today through Sunday (gates open at 1 PM each day) at Calumet Beach (9801 S. Ave. G). Check out information about the festival and scheduled performers in Nancy Sánchez Tamayo’s article here. Tonight’s headliner is the duo Zion & Lennox, and tickets for both tonight and the entire weekend are still available. And Pitchfork, the sprawling festival dedicated to new and independent pop and rock, returns to Union Park (1501 W. Randolph) this weekend (performances start today, tomorrow, and Sunday at 1 PM). Reader senior writer wrote about what to look forward to at Pitchfork in this piece about this summer’s music festivals. Today’s schedule includes the National, Spiritualized, and Tierra Whack, and tickets are still available. (SCJ)

Candace Parker held scoreless for first time in WNBA Career

The Chicago Sky won despite Candace Parker being held scoreless for the first time in her WNBA career

Even the legends can have a rough night.

Chicago Sky Forward Candace Parker shot 0-11 from the field, including 0-4 from three, resulting in Parker being held scoreless for the first time in her career, a span of 381 games. However, despite Parker’s off night, the Sky still came out victorious against Los Angeles.

In tonight’s win over her former team, Candace Parker failed to score a point for the first time in her career.
Parker had gone 381 straight games without going scoreless, the second-longest streak to begin a player’s career in WNBA history (Tina Thompson – 412 games). https://t.co/5BrHu6lvPy

Parker did chip in 11 rebounds, 4 assists, a steal, and two blocks in an 80-68 win against her former team, the Los Angeles Sparks.

Rookie guard Rebekah Gardner led the way, scoring 18 points and boosting the defending champs’ league-best record to 18-6.

Brian Urlacher hints some CTE claims by former NFL players are fabricated

Brian Urlacher had this to say about CTE lawsuits

Former Chicago Bears Hall of Fame linebacker Brian Urlacher made some inflammatory comments about former NFL players recently. In a podcast, Urlacher hinted that some former NFL players made up having CTE to get money.

Urlacher joined Will Compton for the “Bussin’ With The Boys” podcast. One of the subjects of conversation was about brain injuries that come with playing football. Compton asked Urlacher if he worries about having complications from CTE.

Via Mediaite, here’s Urlacher’s response:

“I feel like I’m decently sharp still. You know, there’s some things I forget, but my friends forget shit too,” Urlacher said. “I feel like I’m still doing pretty well. There are some guys I played with who claimed — I don’t know, here’s the problem now with all the guys with the CTE, if they do have it, I feel for them, but there’s guys who say they have it just so they can be in the fucking lawsuit,” Urlacher replied.

“They want that money from the NFL and I get it, man. You know, everyone wants to get there due, but there’s really guys that have it, that deserve to be taken care of. And there’s the guys that don’t have it who want to be — who want to have it just so they can get part of that lawsuit and that just drives me crazy,”

Probably not the best comment to make…

Brian Urlacher is a linebacker, not a physician

Brian Urlacher tried to toe the line by admitting some cases were legitimate. But I’m not sure where he was trying to go with his statement. His specialty was football, and more specifically, the linebacker position. Urlacher is not a physician and has no way to verify if a player has CTE or not.

It’s also poor taste for Urlacher to make that comment as an ex-Bears player. Former Bears quarterback Jim McMahon has opened up about his struggles with CTE. If Urlacher has insider knowledge on NFL players making fraudulent claims, I’d like for him to name one name. Otherwise, he’s just talking out his ass.

Chicago Bulls’ Tristan Thompson announcing second child with Khloe Kardashian

Tristan Thompson’s cheating scandal resurfaces with the expectation of a second child with ex-girlfriend Khloe Kardashian

Tristan Thompson of the Chicago Bulls is expecting a second child with ex-girlfriend Khloe Kardashian via a surrogate who had conceived the baby back in November before Tristan’s child with Maralee Nichols was born in December. Thompson, who was traded to the Bulls early this year, still has yet to meet the child says The Sun.

Scandals had surfaced in December about Thompson’s cheating, and People’s magazine states that the new child had already been conceived. From this, Thompson released a statement saying he regretted his previous actions and that he would take full responsibility for them.

According to CNN,  Khloe is happy about the child on the way. Her spokesperson requested that members of the media take to understand the request for Khloe and the family’s privacy. Even though the relationship of the couple has been plagued with struggles, the two have been cited as “acting as co-parents”.

Thompson has yet to make a statement about the new child on the way, and if he will be playing a role in the life of the child, however, there are a few statements circulating around the reunion of the couple.

Buffalo 5, Iowa 4 (11 Innings)

Game Recap

Caleb Killian‘s struggle with command continued yesterday. It is hard to say what the cause is at this point. I’ve yet to see any velo drop or other signs of injury, although anecdotally a loss of command like this can a precursor. The best hope is that it is simply something mechanical that he is working through. I do think part of the issue is that Killian is trying to expand the use of his full arsenal, and is not comfortable using all of his pitches at this point. He walked five men through the first two innings, including one with the bases loaded. Once he simplified his pitch mix in his third and final inning he looked good, working a 1-2-3 frame.

From there, the bullpen picked up the slack, and it looked up to the task. Brandon Leibrandt fired three shutout innings, and Ben Leeper followed with two more.

Another scoreless inning for Ben Leeper who looked as sharp as he ever has today.

But Michael Rucker failed to close it out. Then after tossing a scoreless 10th, Brendon Little allowed two runs in the top of the 11th. Iowa would knock in the inherited runner in the bottom half, and moved the tying run into scoring position, but Levi Jordan grounded out to end it.

Game Recap

Home runs by Chase Strumpf and Alexander Canario in the 4th to wake up what had been a sleepy offensive performance through the first three innings. It gave the Smokies a 2-1 lead and they never looked back.

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

Alexander Canario has taken over the system lead with his 21st HR of the season. It ties the system high set by Trayce Thompson last season. Matt Mervis currently sits in 2nd with 20. Canario is getting more comfortable in AA (obviously) but just as important, I am starting to see him barrel up on pitches that are not grooved fastballs and hanging breaking balls. That is the next step in his development, and if he manages to take it, he’ll go far because his bat speed and power potential are as good as anyone in the system.

Jake Slaughter paces the system with his 23 stolen bases, three ahead of Pete Crow-Armstrong.

Slaughter has always been a dirtbag on the bases with sneaky spedd. Trouble was, prior to this year he didn’t hit enough to get on base regularly and show off those skills. https://t.co/5q5NvVcxaO

Tennessee’s lineup is about to get yet another power hitter. Also…Yah!:

Some good news for Cubs fans: I’m told Miguel Amaya will be headed to Double-A Tennessee “relatively soon” barring something unforeseen happening.

Amaya has yet to play in an affiliated game in 2022. He’s been getting ABs in Arizona while coming back from Tommy John surgery.

High-A

South Bend 5, Peoria 1

Game Recap

I didn’t get a chance to watch any of this one, but South Bend remains the hottest team in the org. They jumped out early with four runs in the top of the 1st on single RBIs by Fabian Pertuz and Luis Verdugo, and then Pablo Aliendo capped off the frame with a two-run single. Pertuz added another run scoring single the next inning, and though the offense did little the rest of the way it was more than enough, because…

D.J. Herz did his thing. As usual. Nobody hits this guy. Just one run on one hit (a homer), and most importantly Herz walked just two batter through five innings. It was one maybe his most efficient outing of the season, needing just 72 pitches. The bullpen continued the domination, allowing just one hit and two more walks over four shutout innings.

Top Performers

D.J. Herz: 5 IP, H, R, 2 BB, 6 K (W, 2-2, 2.26)Michael McAvene: IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K (2.70)Riley Martin: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K (4.71)Fabian Pertuz: 2-4, R, 2 RBI (.241)Pablo Aliendo: 2-4, 2 RBI (.253)Yohendrick Piñango: 2-4, R (.291)

Game Recap

Oh boy. Richard Gallardo came to play. He’s always intense on the mound, but he was feeling it last night. Consistently working in the mid-90s and pairing it with a solid changeup and a breaking ball that he snapped off with the most consistent break I’ve seen out of him, he was just locked in and the Fayetteville hitters had little chance.

This moment of him walking off the mound after his 13th strikeout is the energy he had all game. https://t.co/dFMczHVSJm pic.twitter.com/HH51Xf6Lq4

CHC RHP Richard Gallardo struck out 13 over 6 innings today. FB was mid-90’s. CB was the star of the show today. Showed feel for a decent CH. Also throws a SI and SL. Absolute bulldog mentality on the mound. pic.twitter.com/j1Hp1LQGpt

— Trevor Hooth (@HoothTrevor)

July 15, 2022

Still just 20 years old, Gallardo is already pretty filled out, and so despite having an advanced feel for pitching and pretty good results, I’ve remained cautious in my optimism for him. In some ways he reminds me a bit of Jen Ho-Tseng (also Javier Assad), another high profile IFA signing who got people excited when he put up good numbers early on because of his advanced command and ability to change speeds against low level competition, but who I always worried would hit his ceiling earlier than most prospects because I failed to see a strikeout pitch against MLB hitters in his arsenal.

I’m starting to think I’ve maybe been a bit too harsh on Gallardo though. He’s already far stronger than Tseng ever was. And given the way velo jumps and changes in pitch profiles can happen thanks to all the latest technology and training, perhaps there is more upside with Gallardo than I previously projected.

There is still plenty of development ahead, but he certainly made a statement last night.

Oh, and the Pelicans offense also posted 11 runs, big shock. They even managed to do it without a home run, and with a James Traintos double as their only extra base hit.

Top Performers

The Chicago Bears don’t have a starting caliber left tackle to start the 2022 season

Three players will line up to compete to be the Chicago Bears starting left tackle in 2022 and the team is hoping one of them can emerge as a starter

Larry Borom, Teven Jenkins, Braxton Jones, it doesn’t matter who the Chicago Bears march out there in week one of the NFL season, it’s not going to be a starting caliber left tackle.  The Bears hopes at left tackle are on a wing and a prayer that one of these three players each with less than two years of starting NFL experience and even less experience playing left tackle will come up and take over the position.

Ryan Poles made an attempt in free agency to sign Terron Armstead, but Armstead ultimately signed on with the Miami Dolphins who had a far better salary cap situation heading into the 2022 off-season.  This left the Bears without a real left tackle and hope that someone can step in and be the guy.  That is a quiet admission that there’s a major problem ahead for the Bears that could prove to be the entire undoing of the Bears offense in 2022.

First let’s look at who the Bears have that might be considered for the left tackle position in 2022.

Larry Borom has the most NFL experience at the position with a couple of games started at left tackle in 2021.  Borom was forced into the role after three players went down with injuries.  Borom a fifth-round draft pick struggles in pass protection and has a huge learning curve to become an even competent player at LT.

Your left tackle needs to be your best pass blocker and Borom is a better run blocker.  He also comes up short on the desired arm length for the LT spot.  Borom however spent most of his career at right tackle and seems better suited in that role overall.

Next the Chicago Bears could trot out 2021 second round draft pick Tevin Jenkins who missed all of training camp with a back.  Former Bears GM Ryan Pace inexplicably cut Charles Leno Jr in favor of starting Jenkins at LT which completely baffled anyone with an eye for football.

Jenkins spent the entirety of his career at RT and then was immediately asked to be Justin Fields’ blind side protector.  That was a major fail because of the injury an injury that could be the beginning of long-term problems as it was for former Bear Chris Williams who also was a LT.  Jenkins looked like he might be the best option among him and Borom.  Either way the Bears likely have two right tackles that are on the same kind of developmental timeline.

Then comes rookie fifth-round Braxton Jones who ran with the first team at left tackle throughout most of mini-camp.  Jones goes 6-foot-5 310-pounds with over 35-inch arms.  That arm length is nearly a full two inches more than either Borom or Jenkins.  He’s played the position consistently as a starter over the last three seasons.  He’s a little more athletic and versatile.

He could arguably project like a Terron Armstead, they’re the same height coming out of college, same athletic traits, and both came from a small school and were drafted in the mid rounds of their respective draft classes.  The downside, Jones is a very raw prospect who hasn’t faced any high-level competition in college.  Despite looking good in the game against Arizona State, he didn’t dominate a prospect that would be considered NFL caliber.

Heading into the 2022 season it’s going to take a borderline miracle for the Chicago Bears to get starting quality play out of any of these three players.  You hope that the competition between the three will cause one of them to up their game to the point that they can be at least an average left tackle.  The likelihood though is the Bears are going to squeeze water out of a rock.

3 insane Ian Happ trade packages with New York YankeesVincent Pariseon July 15, 2022 at 12:00 pm

Use your (arrows) to browse

The Chicago Cubs are one of the worst teams in the National League. The New York Yankees are one of the best teams in the American League. As a result, they are excellent trade partners before the 2022 MLB Trade Deadline.

Thre are a few players that the Cubs could be selling off before the deadline. Ian Happ is someone whose name is out there and he fits what the New York Yankees are trying to do. They could legitimately win the World Series so they will be stocking up on extra depth.

If New York decided that Happ was someone that they really did want to trade for, these are three trades that could get the deal done:

Cubs Get
Yoendrys Gomez
Brock Selvidge
Yankees Get
Ian Happ

Ian Happ could land the Chicago Cubs some really nice pitching prospects.

The Chicago Cubs could use some good prospects in their system. They already have a nice farm but they want to add as much as possible. It will be a while before a lot of these kids make it to the league. There is also risk associated with them. That’s why it’s smart to get as many as you can.

Yoendrys Gomez is New York’s number eight prospect. He is a right-handed pitcher that is currently playing in High-A ball. He should be able to make his MLB debut sometime during the 2023 season but that remains t be seen.

Brock Selvidge is their 14th overall prospect. He is a left-handed pitcher that might be able to make it to the show around 2025 if he ever does. With the right development, he might be able to achieve his dream at some point. Good left-handed pitchers are hard to come by so having him as the second piece in this trade might be worth it with a prospect like Gomez.

Security Vs Privacy–Which Matters to You?

Security Vs Privacy–Which Matters to You?

I was listening to an online Homeowners Association Board meeting the other night (Barb does an exemplary job as Board President) as a resident gave a presentation about an item not on the agenda.

Jack had done some research and wanted the Board to know about a crime reduction security product that could be available to our subdivision. The product consists of a security camera to be placed at the subdivision entrance (we only have one) to photograph each entering automobile and transmit the license plate and other identifying information of the car to a database of vehicles reported as stolen or wanted for involvement in other criminal activity.

Any matches are immediately flagged and sent to the local police dispatch center for a real-time response. The police can apprehend the driver and prevent a crime from occurring in our subdivision. And by the way, all data is also permanently stored “in the cloud.”

The Board asked Jack a few questions but since the item was not on the agenda Barb appropriately limited the discussion and let Jack know this would be considered at a future date.

I don’t know about you, but the prospect of a system like this horrifies me! Every time I or a guest of mine enters my own subdivision, the police will have a permanent record of the entrance. Who will have access to that data? For what purposes might it be used? What has happened to any sense of privacy?

Yes, our subdivision currently has a security camera. It records comings and goings and if, and only if, a crime is committed in the subdivision, those recordings are reviewed to see if the perpetrator can be identified. I get that. But to me, that is very different than the prospect of screening every car in real-time.

I know that surveillance is part of our daily lives. I know that every time I go past a toll plaza on the Tri-State the I-Pass system creates a permanent record. And I know credit cards and cell phones also leave never-disappearing traces of my whereabouts. But these are systems and devices I choose to use. And to the best of my knowledge, they are not immediately cross-referenced to a criminal database.

I value at least a little bit of privacy, even though I am not as privacy-conscious as I should be. I still use Google to do my online searches rather than the (claimed to be) more private DuckDuckGo. I probably use unsecured WiFi when I shouldn’t. I’m sure I make a thousand other mistakes that destroy my privacy. But do the local gendarmes really need a record of when I come home at night?

Security vs Privacy. It is a delicate balance. But this proposed security system is too intrusive for me. In the security vs privacy battle, I vote for privacy on this one.

How about you? Tell me what you think. I promise I won’t be tracking you!
