UPDATE: Chicago Bears add WR to Week 6 injury report

The Chicago Bears add a WR to the injury report

The current Chicago Bears injury report looks much different than the one released Monday. The Bears placed linebacker Matt Adams on the Bears’ injured reserve Tuesday. On Monday, the team activated wide receiver N’Keal Harry off the injured reserve.

According to the Bears, injury report released Tuesday, Harry’s name has been added to the injury report. The fourth-year wide receiver was projected to be limited in participation in practice with an ankle injury. (It’s a projection because the Bears conducted Monday’s and Tuesday’s practices as walk-throughs with the short week before Thursday night’s game.)

Cornerbacks Dane Cruikshank and Jaylon Johnson are listed as full participants for practice.

It’ll be interesting to see if Harry will be able to make his debut against the Washington Commanders Thursday. Harry caught four touchdowns and had 598 yards receiving during his first three years in league with the New England Patriots. The Bears traded a 2024 seventh-round pick for Harry this off-season.

Blick Art Materials returns to Downtown Chicago

The national art supply retailer hosts the grand opening of its new Loop location on October 21

Blick Art Materials’ newest retail store is located at 16 W Randolph St., in the heart of Chicago’s theater district.

If you’ve been wondering about all the excitement at that impossible-to-miss building with the large glockenspiel clock at 16 W Randolph, it’s due to the arrival of its newest tenant, Blick Art Materials.

On Friday, October 21, Blick will host the grand opening of its new store in downtown Chicago. Located just steps from the Lake Red Line station and the Washington Blue Line station, the national art-supply retailer will cater to students and educators from the nearby campuses of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), Columbia College Chicago, and the American Academy of Art College (with whom Blick proudly partners, along with other arts and community organizations nationwide), while serving the greater Chicago arts community. The two-story space will contain an expanded assortment of art supplies from top-name vendors and private label products, including an enhanced selection of Utrecht Artists’ Paints. They’ll also stock plenty of trending craft items, stationery, and unique gifts—just in time for the holiday season.

The building the new store is housed in has a fascinating history of its own. It was built in 1934 by brothers Max and Robert Eitel as the site of their new venture, the Old Heidelberg Restaurant, where they planned to dish up the classic German dishes they grew up on in their native Stuttgart to local theatergoers. The Eitels commissioned Graham, Anderson, Probst and White (the same architecture firm responsible for the Merchandise Mart, the Wrigley Building, and Civic Opera House) to create an aesthetic in homage to a traditional German village. That can be seen in the building’s stunning façade, which features arched doorways, a decorative parapet, and an ornate glockenspiel clock, whose small wooden doors conceal the building’s quirkiest feature—a colorful statue of King Gambrinus, the legendary icon of beer. Created by Chicago artist Edgar Miller for the Old Heidelberg in 1934, the merry king once regularly emerged to the sound of chimes to mark the hour. The clock is currently undergoing repairs.

The building has changed hands multiple times over the years and Blick is honored to be part of its legacy while providing Chicago’s creative community with the city’s best selection of high-quality art supplies and superior customer service.

1st-and-10: Justin Fields’ progress always a win for Bears

The Bears hit the “Sweet Spot of Bad” for the first time in 2022 in their 29-22 loss to the Vikings at U.S. Bank Stadium — that’s where Justin Fields makes progress, plays well and the Bears still lose.

After Fields was sacked six times and completed 11-of-22 passes for 174 yards with no touchdowns in a loss to the Giants last week, the Bears were starting to trend toward the less-desirable rebuilding-year scenario — bad enough for a top-five pick in the 2023 draft, but possibly needing to use it on a quarterback.

The Sweet Spot of Bad puts them in the better scenario — with a developing Fields in place and a top-five (or top-10) pick to get an elite-quality weapon in the draft for their up-and-coming quarterback — like the Bengals (Ja’Marr Chase at No. 5), Dolphins (Jaylen Waddle at No. 6) and Eagles (DeVonta Smith at No. 10) did in the 2021 draft.

There’s still a long way to go and nothing is defined for the Bears this season — good or bad. And this wasn’t exactly a breakout game for Fields. Completing 15-of-21 passes for 208 yards, one touchdown, no interceptions for a 118.8 passer rating, plus 47 rushing yards on eight carries clears a bar that most established quarterbacks can step over.

But the loss to the Vikings was a good example of what this season is all about — developing Fields despite a modest supporting cast so the Bears can use their massive cap space and better draft capital to load up and give Fields a chance to take off in 2023.

By that standard, Sunday’s loss was definitely a step forward for Fields and the Bears. And the confidence it gave Fields was palpable even in his post-game press conference. You could tell he felt pretty good about his performance even in a loss.

Evaluating mood and body language can be risky — it can change in a matter of days. But there’s even more anticipation than usual to see if Fields can parlay a performance that clearly lifted his spirits into something bigger against a Washington defense that has allowed a 113.7 passer rating (10 touchdowns, no interceptions) the past four weeks — to Ryan Tannehill (95.6), Cooper Rush (107.5), Jalen Hurts (123.5) and Jared Goff (121.7).

2. The Fields Effect: Bears running back David Montgomery was among those who saw the game as a step forward despite the loss. “You still see bad things happen … but there are a lot of good things that happen as well, that we can grow on.”

Asked for the best of those good things, Montgomery responded quickly.

“Justin, really,” he said. “The way he’s playing and bringing this aura to have everyone behind him to the way he plays. “His poise, how calm he is. If your quarterback can be calm in hostile situations, I have no choice but to be calm, because he’s the one calling the shots.”

3. For What It’s Worth Dept. –Fields’ 118.7 passer rating is the highest allowed by the Vikings’ defense this season — ahead of Hurts (108.7), Andy Dalton (108.6), Goff (79.0) and the Packers’ Aaron Rodgers (67.6).

Fields’ 208 passing yards ranked 24th among starting quarterbacks in Week 5. But if you include a 20-yard gain on a pass interference call (a point-of-foul infraction that should be included in passing/receiving stats), he threw for 228 yards, so …

Fields’ 7.7 yards per attempt ranks seventh in the NFL, ahead of such luminaries as Patrick Mahomes (7.4), Russell Wilson (7.4), Lamar Jackson (7.2), Matthew Stafford (6.9), Aaron Rodgers (6.9) and Tom Brady (6.8).

4. Fairness Dept.: Fields’ 17.6 attempts per game is 37th among quarterbacks who have started two or more games. He’s 31st in passer rating (73.1) and 25th in QBR (which takes rushing into account, 37.1).

5. Speaking of pass interference calls, the Bears could have an opportunity to air it out against a Washington defense that leads the NFL with six defensive pass interference penalties for a league-high 138 yards.

Cornerbacks Williams Jackson (38, 27 yards), Rachad Wildgoose (23, 17) and Kendall Fuller (21) have five of them. Safety Bobby McCain (21) has the other.

6. The Bears’ comeback from a 21-3 deficit against the Vikings was the third time (out of 23 times) they have recovered from a deficit of 17 or more points in the first half to take the lead since the Miracle in the Desert against the Cardinals in 2006.

They did that in 2019 against the Raiders in London, when they fell behind 17-0 in the first half but rallied behind Chase Daniel to take a 21-17 lead — only to lose 24-21, and lose their next three games to fall to 3-5.

The last time the Bears fell behind by 17 points or more in the first half and won was in 2014 against the 49ers in the first regular-season game at Levi’s Stadium. The Bears fell behind 17-0 in the second quarter before Jay Cutler threw three touchdown passes to Brandon Marshall and one to Martellus Bennett to win 28-20.

7. The offensive line might end up being the Bears’ biggest issue as the season ensues, because five games into the season, the Bears are still searching for a lineup they can grow with. And with this group — that includes a fifth-round rookie at left tackle in Braxton Jones and a fifth-round second-year player in right tackle Larry Borom — continuity will be key.

But continuity has been elusive. When Lucas Patrick replaced injured starter Cody Whitehair at left guard against the Vikings, it was the Bears’ third different starting lineup in five games –and the 52nd lineup change in nine seasons since all five starters last played all 16 games in 2013.

The Bears’ longest stretch of games with the same starting five offensive linemen is seven games in 2018 — Charles Leno, James Daniels, Whitehair, Bryan Witzmann (for Kyle Long) and Bobby Massie.

8. Darnell Mooney’s spectacular, one-handed, 39-yard catch against the Vikings was one of the best in Bears history. Among the others on that list:

Marty Booker’s one-handed, 30-yard catch of a Kyle Orton pass while being interfered with by cornerback Travis Fisher in a 34-7 victory over the Lions at Ford Field in 2008.Harlon Hill’s game-tying, diving, juggling, 56-yard touchdown reception from Ed Brown against the Giants at Yankee Stadium in 1956.Damiere Byrd’s leaping catch for a game-winning two-point conversion against the Seahawks last year when he was surrounded by three defenders and hung onto the ball with one hand as he completed the process of the catch and stayed in bounds.

9. Josh McCown Ex-Bears Player of the Week: Dolphins running back Raheem Mostert had 18 carries for 113 yards and a touchdown in a 40-17 loss to the Jets — it was a two-point game in the fourth quarter until the Jets scored three touchdowns to make it a blowout.

Mostert played in two games with the Bears in 2016 — both on special teams. He has 394 carries for 2,206 yards (5.6 avg.) and 17 touchdowns since the Bears released him from the practice squad in Week 12 of 2016 — including 29 carries for 220 yards and four touchdowns in a 49ers playoff victory over the Packers in 2020.

10. Bear-ometer: 6-11 –vs. Commanders (W); at Patriots (L); at Cowboys (L); vs. Dolphins (L); vs. Lions (W); at Falcons (W); at NY Jets (L); vs. Packers (L); vs. Eagles (L); vs. Bills (L); at Lions (L); vs. Vikings (W).

Bears predictions: Week 6 vs. Commanders

The Sun-Times’ experts offer their picks for the Bears’ Thursday night game against the Commanders at Soldier Field:

RICK MORRISSEY

Bears 21-17

The planets seem to be aligning for a Bears victory. Justin Fields is coming off a decent game. The Commanders have lost four straight. And the Bears’ defense has promised to set its alarm clock for kickoff rather than for halftime. But with this team, there are no sure things. Season: 4-1.

RICK TELANDER

Bears 21-19

This is a must-win game for the Bears. Win and they’re .500, lose and they’re in a hole they won’t recover from. The problem is it’s a must-win for the 1-4 Commanders too. Show ’em the way out , Mr. Fields. Season: 4-1.

LAURENCE HOLMES

Bears 21-18

I’m going against my better judgement and hoping that the improved play from Justin Fields is real and not imagined. Also, the Washington franchise is just a mess right now. The Bears are less of a mess. Season: 3-2.

PATRICK FINLEY

Commanders 27-26

This might be the last time all season the Bears have a better record than their opponent. Like I said before (wrongly) picking the Texans to beat them, it’s dangerous to presume the Bears are walkover favorites against anyone. Weird things happen on Thursday nights. Season: 2-3.

JASON LIESER

Bears 20-13

Fields is coming off his best game and he’ll be facing a struggling defense. The Commanders also don’t have much going offensively with quarterback Carson Wentz, who could be headed to the bench soon. Season: 3-2.

MARK POTASH

Bears 18-15

Two upstreaming teams playing on short rest is not likely to be pretty, but the Bears are at home against a 1-4 opponent, with an opportunity for Fields and the offense to build off Sunday’s baby step against the Vikings.Season: 4-1.

A must win game for the Commanders and Bears? Week 6 Preview

It is hard to say that a week 6 game is a must-win game for the Commanders and Bears but a loss this week would have both looking at some nearly impossible odds to make the playoffs.

The Washington Commanders come into Thursday’s game on a four-game losing streak and if more losses continue to mount could cost the current head coach of the Commanders and ex-Bears linebacker Ron Rivera his job. Here is a position-by-position breakdown of the Commanders:

Quarterback: This offseason, the Commanders made a trade to acquire quarterback Carson Wentz from the Indianapolis Colts for two-third round picks. Wentz did not have a great year in Indianapolis and the Colts were eager to unload him to another team. Washington acquired Wentz to try and help their offense which was ranked 21st in the league las season. However, the offense looks just as ineffective as last year with the Commanders failing to have 300 yards of offense in two out of the last three games and ranking 23rd in total offense coming into the game on Sunday vs the Titans.

In the last four games, the Commanders have scored a total of seventeen points in the first half. While not all the blame falls with the quarterback, he does deserve some of the blame because of his inability to be consistent and the bad starts the offense has has this year and his coach has even stated his displeasure with the play of Wentz after the loss to the Titans.

According to Pro Football Reference, Wentz is second in the league in bad throw percentage (throws that were not catchable with normal effort) and the leader is this guy that Bears fans should be familiar with. Wentz has the third most interceptions in the league and has three of the five fumbles that the Commanders have had this year. Washington has the ability to cut Wentz this off-season with incurring any dead money on their salary cap and it would appear that Washington may be in the quarterback market this off season.

Running Back: Coming into this season, the Commanders had a competition at running back to see who would be the starter between the incumbent Antonio Gibson and rookie Brian Robinson.  While Gibson had career highs in rushing yards and receptions in 2021, he also led in the league in fumbles which caused Washington to bring in some competition for Gibson. The competition for the starting running back was put on hold after Robinson was shot twice during a botched car jacking on August 29. Robinson was just activated last week for the game vs the Titans and last week and had 9 carries for 22 yards.

The run game for the Commanders has been pretty pedestrian currently ranking 19th this season and only has two rushing touchdowns. The Bears have faced Aaron Jones, Saquan Barkley, and Dalvin Cook already this season and this duo is not on the level of any of those running backs.

Offensive Line: The main reason that this offense has not clicked is the abysmal play of this offensive line. Coming into the game on Sunday, the offensive line has given up 17 sacks which is the 2nd most in the NFL. The line has struggled with consistency because of the injuries and poor play. Center Chase Rouiller was placed on injured reserve after hurting his knee in the game vs Lions and is out for an extended period of time.

Right Guard Wes Schweitzer who was placed on injured reserve after sustaining a concussion and will miss this game on Thursday. Schweitzer was engaged in a competition with guard Trai Turner to see who should be the starter at right guard and Turner had started the first three games but lost the job due to poor play to Schweitzer who then got injured so Turner now becomes the starter. Turner has not been good this season and has allowed 3 sacks which is just three less than he gave up last year in Pittsburgh.

Starting right tackle Sam Cosmi has given up five sacks this year and is also on the injured list with a hand injury. Cosmi has been replaced by Saahdiq Charles who has made a total of 6 starts in three seasons. The Bears defensive line should have their way with this patchwork offensive line.

Wide Receiver: The wide receiver group has played well with four different wide receivers having a receiving touchdown this season. The leader of this group is Terry McLaurin who leads the team in receiving yards and is  second in receptions. Wentz has also looked for Curtis Samuel who is having the best start in his six-year career.

He leads the team in receptions and targets and leads the team in receptions for 1st downs. The last wide receiver that has made a difference for the Commanders is rookie Johan Dotson. Dotson has scored a touchdown in three of his first four games but missed the game vs the Titans due to a hamstring injury (Editor’s Note: At the time of this writing, his status for this game is not known).

As opposed to last week when the Bears played vs the Vikings and Justin Jefferson, this team has more threats all over the field that can make plays in the passing game. This group could be a difficult group to defend on Thursday and the Bears secondary will need to be on alert.

Tight End: Logan Thomas is the starter in this group and came into the game on Sunday 10th in league in receptions by a tight end. Last year, was an injury plagued year for Thomas, he played the first four games of the season and then was placed on injured reserve for six games to recover from a knee injury and then returned for one game before being placed on injured reserve for the last five games of the 2021 season.

Even with all the injuries in 2021, Thomas still had 196 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns. The Bears ranked in the middle of the league in terms of receiving yards by tight ends and Thomas will present a challenge for the Bears defense.

Defensive Line: Overall, this defense has not been good but the defensive line has done a really good job of putting pressure on the quarterback this year. They rank in the top 10 in quarterback hits, sacks and tackles for loss. This group is led by its two defensive tackles Johnathan Allen and Daron Payne who are doing a great job of occupying blockers so that the other defender on the defensive line can make plays.

Payne and Allen have combined 5 sacks and 12 quarterbacks hits and the attention on them has allowed other players on this defensive line to make plays. On Sunday, defensive end Martez Sweat got his first three sacks of the season and overall this group had 5 sacks on the day. A key matchup to watch how the Bears interior offensive line handle these two defensive tackles.

Linebackers: This unit has been inconsistent all season with stopping the run. For example, on Sunday the Commanders held running back Derrick Henry to under 4 yards per carry and only 12 yards in the second half yet Henry had 108 rushing yards in the first half however the unit has only given up two rushing touchdowns the entire year which is tied for the 2nd fewest in the league. Earlier in the season, Coach Ron Rivera has called out starting linebacker Jamin Davis for his poor play this season against the run. However, the week before the game vs the Titans, he praised the linebacker for his improved play and “soaking up the gravy”.

Washington mostly plays two linebackers at a time and the other linebacker with Davis has been Cole Holcomb. Holcomb leads the team in tackles and had a season high 15 tackles on Sunday vs the Titans. The Bears should be able to run on this group of linebackers.

Secondary: The Commanders secondary is in complete disarray and you can point to this unit has the reason why the defense is ranked near the bottom of the league this season. In particular, the defensive backs have had issues with stopping the passing game of the teams they have faced.

During the loss to the Titans on Sunday, starting cornerback William Jackson III was benched after a touchdown drive by the Titans. Jackson states that it was because of an injury while head coach Ron Rivera stated that it was because of he decided to make a change. Coming into the game on Sunday, offenses are completing nearly 70 percent of the passes against Jackson.

However, he is not the worst defensive back on this roster that title would belong to Kendall Fuller. Fuller has allowed 319 yards this year and the average yards per reception is 19.9 yards. Every game this year, the Commanders have allowed a passing play over 40 yards and every game except two they have allowed a wide receiver to get over 100 yards. Justin Fields is coming off his best day passing this season on Sunday and will have the ability to continue to improve vs this secondary.

Kicking: Kicker Joey Slye is 10 for 11 on field goals this season and all of his field goal attempts have been from 40 plus yards. The weather on Thursday is expected to be clear but the forecast call for wind gusts up to 20 MPH so the kicking game could be affected. Punter Tress Way leads the league in most punts and has an average of 47 yards per punt which ranks 15th in the league.

The Commanders have had the worst starting position in the league for their offensive drives which also speaks to the struggles that this offense has had this season.

Super Bowl winning QB compares Justin Fields to NFL MVP (+VIDEO)

Trent Dilfer thinks Justin Fields might have turned a corner

Little hope was given to Chicago Bears fans for most of the first half of Sunday’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings. The defense looked inept against the Vikings. The offense had no rhythm. The second half was a different story. Quarterback Justin Fields offered the team new life. He told reporters after the game he found his rhythm.

Super Bowl-winning quarterback Trent Dilfer seems to agree with Fields’ assessment. Dilfer appeared on The Parkins & Spiegel Show to discuss Fields’ progress against the Vikings. Dilfer thought Fields played great in Week 5.

“I thought it was phenomenal, not just good…He looked and felt like the best player on the field. And isn’t that what you’re really looking for,” Dilfer asked.

Dilfer praised Fields for using his legs for a long touchdown (that was called back) and how Fields could keep calm in the pocket using physical confidence that reminded Dilfer of Ben Roethlisberger. He then compared Fields to another great NFL quarterback.

“Wow, this is like, I remember watching Aaron Rodgers in his second year and going, ‘ok, that guy’s going to be the best player on the field here pretty soon,’” Dilfer said. “And that’s kind of how it felt if [Fields] can maintain this, be quick but not in a hurry mentality. Which is the hardest thing to do when you’re not being well protected.”

Justin Fields should gain more confidence this week

The Bears have a short week to prepare for their Week 6 game against the Washington Commanders on Thursday Night Football. Justin Fields will have an excellent chance to gain confidence against a struggling 1-4 Commanders team. The Commanders have given up the 19th most passing yards this season. They average allowing 235 yards through the air each game.

Fields must show he can string together another good game this week. There have been bursts of promise, but he and the Bears have not played well in a complete game yet. The Commanders are a golden opportunity for Fields to lead the team for an entire game with confidence before the schedule gets much more challenging.

Bears offensive coordinator sees Justin Fields progressing

Luke Getsy doesn’t like to make grand statements.

“I’m just not that kind of person,” he said.

Still, the Bears’ offensive coordinator was willing to concede Tuesday that quarterback Justin Fields improved in his Week 5 showing against the Vikings.

“There’s been progress, right?” he said. “And we’re sticking to the plan. I thought he did a really nice job in that game in the sense of he kept his composure. They got off to a big lead, he kept the team together.”

In Sunday’s 29-22 loss, Fields posted a career-best 118.1 passer rating and 71.4 completion percentage. He threw for 208 passing yards after throwing for 471 in the first four games of the season combined.

“Then, you know, he had three or four unbelievable escapes that were ridiculous,” Getsy said. “I thought he did a pretty good job. Again, we’re getting a little bit better each week and that’s truly our purpose, that’s our goal.”

Cubs: Scott Effross and David Robertson both injured in playoffsVincent Pariseon October 11, 2022 at 6:23 pm

The Chicago Cubs are not in the playoffs but some of their players from the 2022 season are. They were a somewhat active team at the 2022 trade deadline which allowed some of their better trade chips to make runs in the playoffs.

Unfortunately, two of the biggest pieces moved off the rosters are now hurt going into the second round. Scott Effross isn’t on the New York Yankees roster for the American League Division Series against the Cleveland Guardians due to an elbow injury.

It has been determined that Effross will require Tommy John surgery which means that he will be out for a long time.

That is bad news for the Yankees who wanted him as a part of their bullpen for a long time. It is a very injured pen too which makes it even worse.

Scott Effross was excluded from the ALDS roster because he had an elbow issue and it’s been determined that he will need Tommy John surgery. Major loss for the Yankees, who viewed Effross as a linchpin reliever in this postseason and beyond. #effross https://t.co/emS4GMZgZd

— Jack Curry (@JackCurryYES) October 11, 2022

It doesn’t end there for former Cubs relievers. David Robertson is off the Philadelphia Phillies roster as he strained his right calf.

The odd thing about this injury is that he didn’t do it while playing baseball. He hurt his calf while jumping up and down after a Bryce Harper home run in the Wild Card series against the St. Louis Cardinals. That is a wild way to hurt yourself during the playoffs.

Per Rob Thomson: Phillies reliever David Robertson strained his right calf jumping up in the air when Bryce Harper homered against the Cards last round. He’s out for the division series.

— Jesse Rogers (@JesseRogersESPN) October 11, 2022

Two former Cubs relievers were announced as injured during the playoffs.

Both of these guys are going to have to hope that their team is able to get it done without them. Effross is for sure not coming back but there is a chance that Robertson is able to return.

Neither the Phillies nor the Yankees are happy about this as they both have a very hard series ahead of them. Each of them is going to have to dig deep in their bullpen in order to come out on top. It is just a shame that they have to miss this exciting time and watch from the dugout.

Both Robertson and Effross were magnificent for the Chicago Cubs in 2022. It wasn’t an easy team to play for but they came out and dominated when called upon. That allowed the Cubs to move on from them and get some assets.

We can only hope that the returns (Ben Brown and Hayden Wesneski) turn out to be worthy returns for two good relievers that were pitching well. Hopefully, Effross and Robertson are able to return healthy (albeit at different times).
