The deputy was serving a civil warrant at a home in 600 block of Hanley Street when there was an exchange of gunfire between the deputy and resident of the home, state police said.

A man was fatally shot by a Lake County sheriff’s deputy who was also wounded in a shootout Thursday in Gary, Indiana.

The deputy was serving a civil warrant about noon at a home in 600 block of Hanley Street when there was an exchange of gunfire between the deputy and resident of the home, Indiana State Police said in a statement.

The resident, a man in his 20s, was shot and taken to Northlake Methodist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, state police said.

State police said the deputy was taken to the same hospital with a gunshot wound that was not considered life-threatening.

The use of force is being investigated by Indiana State Police.
