Cam Newton was released by the Carolina Panthers. It’s been a mysterious week for him, so where do the Chicago Bears stand in regards to his free agency?
It has been quite the ride so far for the Chicago Bears in terms of the free agency frenzy. While Tom Brady, DeAndre Hopkins and Todd Gurley are three of the biggest names to change locations, the Bears haven’t gone quite to that extent with their moves.
It sure would have been intriguing to see the Bears in on Brady, or what they could have offered for a big name like DeAndre Hopkins. But, the fact of the matter is, the Bears are operating with less cap space than a lot of teams. They are also down in draft capital for this year.
So, general manager Ryan Pace set out with apparently one goal in mind this free agency period: Bring in veterans with a strong amount of experience, who fit what the team is wanting to do. Whether or not you agree with all of the signings so far (spoiler alert: I do not) is one thing. But, seeing the bigger picture is another. Pace looks like he’s going all-in on a Super Bowl run, and doing it his way.
One player the Bears were apparently in on just days ago was former Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton — yes, “former” does sound a bit odd.
The Panthers parted ways with Newton after signing Teddy Bridgewater to be their new starting quarterback, and right now, Newton is looking for a new home without many options available to him.

It is fair to ask the question around why Pace would trade a fourth-round pick for Nick Foles when Newton would ultimately be released, but there has to be a lot more layers to the situation that we don’t see. So, here’s to trying to unwrap those layers and figure this whole thing out.
