What is the Court of Arbitration for Sport and why are they making such bad decisions?

What is the Court of Arbitration for Sport and why are they making such bad decisions?

Are you familiar with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS)? Yeah, me neither. At least I wasn’t until the last two weeks when they controversially interspersed themselves into the Winter Olympics.

It started when Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva tested positive for a banned substance, She should have been immediately disqualified from skating in the Women’s Figure Skating event. In fact, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) did exactly that. An appeal was then filed. The CAS overruled the IOC and allowed Valieva to skate. Their reasoning was all the evidence had yet to come in at that time. They were also concerned that not allowing her to compete could do damage to her mental health.

Their decision affected every skater in the competition. We saw how that turned out. At the end of the event, all four of the top skaters were in tears. So much for caring about athlete’s mental health,

Next, the CAS became involved in another controversy involving the Team Figure Skating medal ceremony.

The Russian team easily won this event. But, the awarding of the medals was held up due to Valieva’s positive drug test. Sitting in limbo were the United States and Japan teams that finished second and third in the even. Getting up on the medal podium is something these athletes have worked their entire lives to achieve. It looked like these two teams were going home without their silver and bronze medals.

The United States filed an appeal. The case went to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. They met for more than two hours yesterday. The appeal was denied. The U.S. and Japan skaters will not only get their opportunity to stand on the podium, but they’ll also be going home empty-handed.

No medals will be awarded until the case against Valieva is decided. That will most likely take months. What harm would have been done if the two teams had been allowed to take home their current medals? I’m sure if it turns out they get the higher award, they would have no issue with turning in the medals and trading up. But, once again the CAS rules against the best interests of the athletes.

The 2022 Winter Olympics ends today. The good news is the work of the Court of Arbitration for Sport will also end. See you folks in four years. You won’t be missed.

My so called friends think it’s time to edit this section. After four years, they may be right, but don’t tell them that. I’ll deny it until they die!
I can’t believe I’ve been writing this blog for four years.
It started as a health/wellness thing and over the years has morphed to include so many things that I don’t know how to describe it anymore.
I really thought this was going to be the final year of the blog but then Donald Trump came along. It looks like we’re good for four more years..God help us all!
Oh yeah…the biographical stuff. I’m not 60 anymore. The rest you can read about in the blog.

Chicago’s Week in Beer, February 21-24

Chicago’s Week in Beer, February 21-24

Rheingold ad featuring Nat “King” Cole

Slipping into another “mild” week of trivia and beer dinners, with a new release or two. But we are coming up to Mardi Gras next Tuesday, and the weekend before, so keep an eye peeled.

This has only tangentally affected the Chicago beer world, but Portland, Oregon’s Hair of the Dog brewery has announced it is closing after nearly 30 years in business. Alan Sprints started the brewery to focus on strong, bottle-conditioned ales and lagers, and was ahead of the IPA curve. Its popular beers had a picture of a dog on the label, like Fred barleywine and Adam strong ale. Most of its ingredients were sourced from farms and hop yards withing 350 miles of the brewery. They don’t seem to have made it to the Chicago market, but I’ve picked up a few in trades and in Indiana on my way to Dark Lord Day. Sprints has said he has no interest in selling to a corporation, and will keep the doors open until all his supply runs out.

Rebuilding My Life After I Caught My Husband with my Best Friend

Rebuilding My Life After I Caught My Husband with my Best Friend

Posed by professional model.

By Nicole Johnson, for Six Brown Chicks

I was married to Charles for 4 years; Yvonne had been my best friend since high school.

Last year, I caught Charles and Yvonne in our marital bed.

Here’s what happened.

I’m a traveling nurse, and I frequently work out of town.

At the halfway point of my out-of-state assignment, my supervisor told me that my services were no longer needed, as the surge of expected patients had not arrived.

I was coming home two weeks early, and to be honest, I was excited.

I bought lingerie at the airport to surprise my husband when I got home. After all, his birthday was right around the corner.

The Uber dropped me off in front of my home at a little past midnight.  I was dead tired as I dragged my suitcase to the front door. I turned the key, turned off the alarm and dragged my suitcase up the stairs and into our bedroom.

I turned on the lights and found Yvonne asleep, with her arm draped around my husband. He was naked. She was naked. But I was the most vulnerable one in the room.

I picked up the suitcase and hurled it at Charles. The suitcase handle hit Charles in the head, the wheel hit Yvonne in the nose and her blood was everywhere.

Charles, startled, yelled at me: “What are YOU doing here?”

Yvonne apologized frantically, blood trickling from her nose, while she tried to find her clothes and her purse. But Charles just glared at me as a knot formed on his forehead.  “What are YOU doing here?,” he demanded again.

And I almost explained myself until I realized that I didn’t have to; I didn’t have to give an explanation about walking into my own home and standing in my own bedroom without phoning him first.

But shifting blame is a classic Charles move—there he was in bed with my so-called best friend, but my AUDACITY to come home two weeks ahead of time was the ultimate sin.

What am I doing here? I thought to myself. I was in a daze; just standing there as if my mind couldn’t register what my eyes were seeing.

Posed by a professional model.

Yvonne was my best friend, the shoulder I cried on when I had a miscarriage. “God will bless you with a baby,” she reassured me.

Yvonne was my rock when the cracks began to show in my marriage.

Like that time Yvonne took me to Starbucks and we sat in her car for an hour as I detailed, painfully, how Charles just doesn’t seem to be into me (or our marriage) anymore.

Yvonne sat there with big, honest eyes and reassured me that we were just hitting a rough patch and that Charles would come around. Now I know that Yvonne WAS THE REASON why Charles was being distant from me in the first place.

How long have Charles and Yvonne been playing in my face like this? I wondered.

As Yvonne slithered out of my house leaving dots of blood behind her, Charles told me that his infidelity wasn’t ‘anything serious,’ and that he just slept around because I worked all the time. And, that he specifically slept with someone close to me because ‘she reminds me of you,’ he said, as if I gave him permission to use Yvonne as my stand-in.

I didn’t respond because in that moment I knew Charles wouldn’t be in my life anymore so whatever he said didn’t matter.

I got my suitcase off the bed—Charles flinched out of fear as I grabbed it—and I rolled it back down the stairs. Yvonne was outside without shoes waiting on an Uber, I guess. I walked past her, unlocked my car, threw my suitcase into the trunk and sat there as I my warmed the engine.

Charles was in the doorway, wrapped only in a sheet, begging me to come back inside and talk.

My face was streaked with tears.

I stared at Charles, and I asked myself, could I walk away from him, and from everything in that house that was mine? Yes, I could walk away, and I would be a much better woman if it did it.

As I peeled away from the house, I caught a glimpse of the shoeless Yvonne walking back inside.

I crashed at my parent’s house for a month.

Then I got a lawyer and a therapist.

My therapist told me that I’m not obligated to forgive Charles and Yvonne, and that I should not feel guilty for leaving the marriage.

My focus is repairing myself, to that end, Charles and Yvonne are distant memories. They have both reached out to me, but I have not returned their calls/texts. I don’t need their excuses or apologies; I have taken charge of my closure.

Today I’m happily divorced. I have a new apartment; a stable job assignment and I’ve been on a few dates with a decent guy. I’m still in therapy and I won’t let a failed marriage interfere with my future love blessings.

Going forward, I’ll always choose myself, my sanity and my inner peace—and I’ll do whatever it takes to maintain it.

Thank you for reading.

Nickelodeons Jo Jo Siwa Dream Tour comes to Chicago

Nickelodeons Jo Jo Siwa Dream Tour comes to Chicago

On Thursday Feb 10th Jo Jo Siwa Fans all around the Chicagoland area came out to enjoy a night full of bopping and twisting with the now 18 year old superstar. The sold out concert was hosted at the all state arena, one of the largest indoor entertainment facilities in the Chicagoland area.

The Nickelodeon superstar known for her colorful style , large bows, and upbeat music didn’t let fans down with her song and outfit choices for the night. In true JoJo fashion, she opened the show wearing a sparkly two piece number with matching high top kicks. What was notably missing was her famous side ponytail and hair bow that we’ve grown use to seeing over the years. Instead, she rocked long wavy tresses that swung to the sound of the music for most of night.

Although there were several exciting moments throughout the concert from the surprise ballroom dance routine to the random mic tricks. A crowd fav was definitely seeing the Chicago sport’s themed costumes dripped in glitter and moment we got to see JoJo put her famous bow back in her hair.

Nickelodeons JoJo Siwas Dream Tour tickets are on sale now. To learn more and purchase visit http://jojodreamtour.com

Toppin wins dunk contest with one-handed slamon February 20, 2022 at 4:17 am

CLEVELAND — Obi Toppin was the top dunker at NBA All-Star weekend.

The New York Knicks forward went through the legs, tapped the ball off the backboard and finished with a one-handed slam to score a 47 on his final dunk and win NBA Slam Dunk Contest.

He beat the Golden State Warriors’ Juan Toscano-Anderson in an underwhelming final, with Toscano-Anderson, while wearing the uniform of past Warriors dunk champion Jason Richardson, unable to convert his final dunk attempt after three tries.

Orlando Magic guard Cole Anthony, who wore his father, Greg Anthony’s, No. 50 Knicks uniform and accessorized with a pair of Timberlands to complete the New York look, was out after the first round.

Houston Rockets rookie Jalen Green was also out after the first round. He couldn’t seize the moment after taking the court wearing a cell phone hanging from a diamond encrusted chain around his neck showing his past dunk highlights when he and teammate Kevin Porter Jr. struggled timing an alley-oop pass off the side of the backboard.

Towns wins as biggest long shot in 3-point conteston February 20, 2022 at 4:17 am

CLEVELAND — Minnesota Timberwolves center Karl-Anthony Towns demanded an answer as he bounded into the interview room following the 3-point contest at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse on Saturday night.

“Who bet against me?” Towns asked with an ear-to-ear grin.

Whoever did, lost.

Towns, thanks to a record-setting 29 points in the final round, emerged as the winner of the 2022 3-point contest, edging out Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young and LA Clippers guard Luke Kennard, who each put up 26. Towns was 13-1 at Caesars Sportsbook, the longest odds in the field.

2 Related

Towns is the first big man to win the 3-point contest since Kevin Love in 2012. At 6-foot-11, he is the second-tallest winner of the contest; Dirk Nowitzki, who is 7-0, won it in 2006.

Towns, who said he lobbied the league for years to participate, barely escaped the opening round of the competition, taking a deep breath before burying his final shot, which turned out to be just enough to advance to the final round.

From there, he took off, although he was mad afterward that he blew a chance to get to at least 30, the number he expected would be needed to win the contest.

“I’m super happy to win,” Towns said. “It’s great, but I just have such high standards for myself. … I’m the biggest critic of myself. There’s no writer, no blogger, no one who could critique and be more harsher on their game than me on my game. So I was so messed up about not getting the 30. … I thought 30 was what I was going to need to win in the final round. I was able to scrape by with 29.”

Towns wore a chain in honor of his late mother, Jacqueline, after the league made an exception to its policy prohibiting jewelry from being worn during the event. Jacqueline Cruz-Towns died due to complications from COVID-19 in April 2020.

In Saturday night’s final round, Towns flew around the arc and set a mark that, ultimately, Kennard and Young couldn’t reach.

Things went according to script for Towns, with his preference being to go first and set a high score for the others to chase.

“I told Luke Kennard I wanted to go first, so I was glad when they called my name and that I was gonna go first,” Towns said. “Just tremendously confident in my shooting ability and wanted to go first. I wanted to keep pressure on everybody, get a high number that makes it feel almost unattainable. Just that feeling of you have to be perfect, and you miss one, it kind of knocks confidence out, so I wanted to set the tone real quick.

“But I just felt good. I just felt really good and really confident all day. The energy that I had all day wasn’t nervousness or anxious, it was super confident, and I can’t wait to show the world what I can do when given this platform and stage.”

As for why it took him so long to get into the event, Towns said it simply was a matter of him being a big man. While he said winning the competition was further proof he’s the best-shooting big man of all time, Towns said he also wants to serve as a role model for kids, showing them they can play the way they want to play.

“I think the league knew I could shoot the ball the way I could from 3,” Towns said. “But for all the kids, all the tall kids and all the big men out there who are told they won’t succeed doing nothing but having their back to the basket and shooting hook shots, I want to be the example that is not true, and you can accomplish anything you want and be the player you want to be at any time.

“When I grew up, I remember everyone told me the same thing: ‘Have your back to the basket. Why is Karl shooting 3s? There’s no reason for him to be shooting 3s.’ And me and my dad said, ‘Screw them. We’re going to do it our way. We’re going to make the league our way. We’re going to do it our way. We’re going to be great in a way the world has never seen before.’ That’s been my motto. Just show the world greatness from a different lens, and I feel that in the seven years I’ve been in the league I’ve shown them that, and I’m only getting better. I’m just scratching the surface of what I can be.”

Silver: Common interest in seeing deals honoredon February 20, 2022 at 4:17 am

CLEVELAND — As the NBA held its annual All-Star Game at a point in time league commissioner Adam Silver referred to as a hopeful “bookend” to signify the end of the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic, he was asked about a litany of issues that his league must navigate going forward on Saturday.

And he didn’t have many definitive answers.

On the recent PhiladelphiaBrooklyn swap that saw Ben Simmons join the Nets after sitting out the entire season up to the trade deadline and James Harden join the Sixers after appearing to self-sabotage his production in Brooklyn to force the Nets’ hand, he offered no solution.

“I don’t have something specific in mind that can prevent a situation like this,” Silver said. “But I think we and the players have a collective common interest in ensuring that contracts are honored.”

Silver also said that the league has not looked into any potential tampering by the Sixers in their pursuit of Harden. “No team has logged a formal complaint with the league,” he said.

And he would not wade into whether or not Simmons’ reported mental health troubles should be a viable reason to be able to recoup lost salary from Philadelphia fining him.

“The Ben Simmons situation specifically, it’s hard for me to comment on that,” Silver said. “I really don’t have any of my own information on that, but around the league teams have committed additional resources to dealing with the mental, spiritual well-being of their players. I think it’s something that we have talked a lot more about in terms of all our community programs, and it’s another area where I really don’t have any doubt we can do more.”

On the league’s investigation into Phoenix Suns owner Robert Sarver’s alleged history of racism and misogynistic behavior that was opened months ago, he offered no clarity. “No update on the Suns investigation,” he said. “It’s ongoing.”

On the trend of healthy players such as the Houston RocketsJohn Wall this season or Al Horford, when he was a member of the Oklahoma City Thunder last season, being paid their full salary not to play in games, he offered no policy change.

“Do I have a ready fix? No,” Silver said. “I think, again, I’m hoping that those are the kinds of issues that when we sit down with the players, we can approach collectively.”

On the very public saga that’s played out in Brooklyn in regards to guard Kyrie Irving‘s playing status as he continues to reject the COVID-19 vaccine, thus disqualifying him from playing home games in New York City, Silver offered no enforcement of the medical measure.

“Obviously, vaccines, boosters, anti-virals, et cetera, that didn’t exist when the pandemic started,” he said. “So I feel that as a country, as a world, we’re much better equipped to deal with it now. In terms of New York City, I’m not sure exactly what will happen specifically there.”

Silver did take a stance on the issue of reporters returning at some point to teams’ locker rooms, saying “it’s not going to be easy” to restore access. Members of the media have been barred from locker rooms before and after games since the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020.

“I think that depending on where we see this virus, potential variants, you know, I think creating a little bit of distance may make more sense for the foreseeable future,” Silver said. “I also think it’s a bit of an anachronism to have reporters in the actual room where players are dressing.”

Whatever issues the league will continue to navigate, Silver was justified in the optimistic tone he projected during his news conference with reporters on Saturday night if only for what the weekend represents. The NBA is celebrating its 75th anniversary this season and approximately 50 of the top 75 players in league history came to Cleveland for the weekend’s festivities. Silver estimated All-Star Weekend would mean a $100 million economic boost for Cleveland.

“It’s a reminder to me that there’s so much ahead of us,” he said. “When I think about where this league now stands 75 years into its existence as we become more global, as we become more digital, it only creates more opportunities for us to bring basketball literally to every spot on the planet. We see continued growth in the sport.”

Silver also highlighted the incremental gains the league has made in diversity hires, as seven of the eight coaching vacancies last offseason were filled by a minority candidate.

“I’m proud of the progress we’ve seen on the coaching front,” he said. “Sixteen of our head coaches now are people of color. Fourteen are Black … Very positive progress there.”

Unlike the NFL, which instituted the Rooney Rule to require teams to interview minority candidates for coaching and management openings, Silver says the NBA is taking a more holistic approach to diversifying its league, which is comprised of a player base that is nearly 70% Black.

“I don’t want to set quotas around this league,” Silver said. “Again, this is an area where in fairness to those great general managers out there and presidents of basketball, I don’t want to take from teams their ability to make decisions, but I want to make sure that we’re helping develop the right pool of candidates, that they’re paying attention to diversity, that they are recognizing the benefits that come from it, from diversity and inclusion in terms of how those teams are managed, how players potentially respond.”

Silver ended his session on a high note, reveling in the success of the play-in tournament, which was originally introduced as a way to make the NBA bubble more competitive and quickly became a seamless part of the league’s landscape.

“In many ways, it’s been better than we had anticipated,” Silver said. “I don’t want to overstate it because I don’t have many years to go by, but we’re pleased.”

He said the success of the play-in tournament gives the league confidence it can eventually introduce an in-season tournament, although he said it would not happen in the 2022-23 season.

“Maybe we can create some new competitive opportunities, find ways to enhance competition within the season, create a new cup, trophy that players are competing for,” he said.

NBA All-Star Game 2022: Best dunks, skills and shooting plus sights and sounds from All-Star Saturday Nighton February 20, 2022 at 12:55 am

The 2022 NBA All-Star Weekend is in full force as the league’s biggest stars meet in Cleveland.

This year’s edition saw multiple events with new formats — starting with Rising Stars Challenge that took place on Friday night.

Saturday’s action is headlined by three events: the 3-point contest, slam dunk contest and skills challenge.

The Skills Challenge also has a new look. Under the new format, three teams of three players will participate in a four-round competition that tests shooting, passing and dribbling ability.

Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo and his brothers, Alex and Thanasis make up one team. A trio of Cleveland Cavaliers (Darius Garland, Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley) are the second squad. Lastly, standout rookies Scottie Barnes, Cade Cunningham and Josh Giddey will make the third group.

Trae Young and Zach LaVine are the most experienced participants in the 3-point contest, making their second and third appearances, respectively. Desmond Bane, Patty Mills, Karl-Anthony Towns, Fred VanVleet, Luke Kennard and CJ McCollum are first-time participants.

The dunk contest has plenty of fresh faces as Cole Anthony, Jalen Green and Juan Toscano-Anderson make their event debuts. Obi Toppin returns for his second appearance after finishing as the runner-up last year.

Skills Challenge

This recently redesigned challenge saw three teams competing against each other. The team breakdown is as follows:

Antetokounmpos: Giannis, Thanasis and Alex
Cavs: Garland, Allen and Mobley
Rooks: Barnes, Cunningham and Giddey

The shooting portion of the event occurred first, here’s how each squad fared:

Antetokounmpos

Giannis’ successful five-point shot attempt fueled a hot start for the brotherly trio, but things quickly cooled down.

Cavs

This group defended its homecourt with ease and came out on top in the first portion of the skills challenge.

Making an entrance

From cozy couture to flashy fashion, these stars arrived at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in style.

LeBron says ‘door’s not closed’ on return to Cavson February 20, 2022 at 12:28 am

LeBron James said the door is “not closed” on a potential return to the Cleveland Cavaliers and that his last season in the league “will be played with my son” in an interview with The Athletic ahead of Sunday’s All-Star game.

James, who is back in Cleveland for his 18th appearance in the All-Star game, is currently on the first year of a two-year, $85 million contract he signed in the middle of last season. He won’t be a free agent until the 2023-24 season, which would be his 21st in the NBA.

“The door’s not closed on that,” James told The Athletic on Saturday when asked about a potential return to Cleveland. “I’m not saying I’m coming back and playing, I don’t know. I don’t know what my future holds. I don’t even know when I’m free.”

James, who is from Akron, Ohio, played his first seven season with the Cavaliers before departing for the Miami Heat and then returning to Cleveland for another four years.

He told The Athletic he’s not interested in taking a discount after his current contract is up, but left the door open for a possible exception.

“My last year will be played with my son,” James said. “Wherever Bronny is at, that’s where I’ll be. I would do whatever it takes to play with my son for one year. It’s not about the money at that point.”

Bronny James, a 6-3 point guard playing high school basketball at Sierra Canyon School in Los Angeles, is ranked as the 43rd prospect in the ESPN 60 for the 2023 class.

He would be eligible to be drafted in 2024, when LeBron James will be 39.

The Soup Nazi Lives/Chicago’s Politicians! “We Don’t Need No Stinking Stop and Frisk”/ Duh!

The Soup Nazi Lives/Chicago’s Politicians! “We Don’t Need No Stinking Stop and Frisk”/ Duh!

There are times in life when even the most well-meaning people make decisions and are actually following their hearts when in reality they are leaving their brains behind.

Anyone familiar with the hit show Seinfeld most certainly remembers the Soup Nazi! Please let me participate in a little creative indulgence. I can just hear Chicago’s politicians and the ACLU telling the people of Chicago and its law enforcement officers, “NO STOP AND FRISK FOR YOU!”

Back in 1968, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled in a landmark case called Terry vs Ohio that indeed police officers are allowed to stop individuals without probable cause for an arrest providing that the officers can articulate a REASONABLE BASIS FOR THE STOP AND FRISK. In other words, if the officer has a reasonable suspicion that the person has committed, is committing, or is about to commit a crime. It also ruled that the officers may perform a quick search of the person’s outer clothing for weapons if they have reasonable suspicion that the person is armed and presently dangerous.

Now we skip to August 7, 2015, when in the great wisdom of Chicago’s politicians including then-Mayor Rahm Emanuel and his top cop Garry McCarthy decided to enter into an agreement with the ACLU that essentially buried Stop and Frisk in Chicago. The agreement states that Stop and Frisk would be replaced by a new and cumbersome report called (ISR) Investigatory Stop Report. The report on average takes individual officers anywhere from 40 to 45 minutes to fill out and is later reviewed by a retired Federal Judge. So what was essentially a five to ten minute stop and frisk right Chicago’s cops in order to let’s say, to stop suspicious persons in an alley at 3:00 a.m. now are facing 40 to 45 minutes filling out reports to justify why they stopped suspicious individuals? Needless to say, street stops plummeted in Chicago by at least 80 % and have come nowhere near the past numbers before the agreement was ratified.

Cops will tell you that the best preventative measure against shootings and most especially drive-by shootings is street stops and the stop and frisk rule. Since that agreement went into effect 22,706 people have been shot and 4,333 homicides have occurred within Chicago’s city limits. The experience and expertise of Chicago’s cops working Chicago’s streets have been replaced by a Federal judge working from home picking over the few investigatory stops in a clean wholesome environment. It’s mind-boggling to me that hundreds of criminals are arrested and released in Cook County and Chicago almost immediately either by no bonds, low bonds, or the hilariously incompetent home confinement monitoring ankle bracelets. Home confinement by definition of Cook County officials would seem to mean the code word Plant Earth. There are over 100 criminals in Cook County on home confinement who have been charged with murder or attempted murder and hundreds more for violent crimes who are released back into the communities they have preyed upon. Yet they are released time and time again with little or no accountability or punishment, but stopping them on the streets using the Supreme Court-ordered ruling is somehow a violation of their rights, and just to throw in another excuse card, the ACLU says it’s profiling.

Profiling is a word that literally scares the hell out of timid politicians who would not know a Latin King or a Gangster Disciple from circus clowns. Something needs to change, and something is very rotten and it’s not Denmark. Chicago’s victims and future victims need common sense leadership. To not punish criminals and bad behavior just gets you more of it and Chicago is a prime example of that for sure.
