Teatro Zinzanni: A Magical Night That Everyone Deserves

Teatro Zinzanni: A Magical Night That Everyone Deserves

A famous quote from Will Rogers says, “If you don’t like the weather, wait a minute, and it’ll change;” this is how Chicagoans felt within the last 48 hours. With highs in the ’50s to six to ten inches of snow within hours, this climatic change sent most into a state of deep depression. But hidden within a cozy little nook called the Cambria Hotel in Chicago’s downtown loop is a magical destination of Cirque Soleil and fine dining that will heal your soul. Teatro Zinzanni is a night that everyone deserves.

As you walk into The Cambria Hotel Chicago Loop near the James M. Nederlander Theatre, which offers upscale hotel accommodations and amenities, you are greeted by members of Teatro. Be prepared to provide your photo ID and vaccination card, required in Chicago. Then you are brought to the 14th floor, where you can toss away the worries of winter by handing over your coat, getting your tickets, and beginning your night with drinks, photos, or purchasing a tiara, jewelry, and exquisite masquerade masks. Then the jollification starts as you are about to enter The Spiegeltent ZaZou, an enchanted Belgian mirror tent that is both romantic and family-friendly, filled with historic glimmers to excite and dazzle your soul.

Teatro Zinzanni’s cirque and comedy is the best entertainment in Chicago. It’s a hoot filled with laughter, elaborate and spectacular performances, and absolutely a night you must place on your calendar.

From the fantastic restaurant staff to the incredible circus artists, you can forget all of your problems and come on and get happy at Teatro Zinzanni. Hosted by Chef Madame Z (Bethany Thomas) and headwaiter Doily (Kevin Kent), and Phenix (Michael Cunio), Teatro Zinzanni’s cast features five-time rhythmic gymnast national champion Elena Gatilova (Sasha). World-class basketball freestyle juggler Michael Evolution (Shaquille). Noel Aguilar (Rafael), a descendant from Mexico’s first circus families, and the incredible world-class aerial and contortionist Marjorie Nantel (Marjo). And two of Chicago’s trapeze stars, Duo Rose–Sylvia Friedman and Samuel Sion. And let’s not forget the orchestra of Kevin Disch, Jose Martinez, Jon Negus, Chuck Webb with Teatro Zinzanni’s Musical Director Hans Teuber. I was tapping my feet and singing all night.

The entertaining night starts with flamboyant Phenix (Michael Cunio) driving in on his motorcycle. Called the spawn of Freddie Mercury (From the group Queens) and Janis Joplin, Cunio, who is thrilled to return to the tent, rives up the audience with his electrifying, acoustic rock and roll vocals. Cunio, who has changed his appearance, shaving his locks and going for the more bald and buff look, is an amazing performer. And speaking of amazing performers, TZ is blessed to have Bethany Thomas as Chef Madame Z. Thomas, a Chicago-based singer, actor, and writer, who has been an outstanding performer in all of the roles I have seen her play, captures the robustious and zestiness of Chef Madame Z.

But the night belong to (Kevin Kent) as Doily. Doily’s ability to get the audience into the foolery and choose the right person to come on stage and bewitched them to feel comfortable participating in the festivities with his masterful improvisation was simply phenomenal.

TZ’s video crew asked me if Brenda and I would provide video comments, which I usually avoid, but this was a special night.

Make sure you grab the booklet provided by Randolph Entertainemnt LLC so that you can read up on the stars of Teatro Zinzanni. Learn about the Cambria Hotel history and Teatro Zinzanni’s Spiegeltent ZaZou, built-in 1926 as a Masonic Hall rediscovered during the Cambria Hotel construction, now an opulent palace of red velvet and gold brocade, stained glass, and deep mahogany European cabaret tent.

TZ has partnered with iParkIt to offer pre-paid parking options at Theatre District Self Park, located at 181 North Dearborn, for $17. And be prepared to see a $10 hospitality fee per person to cover the gratuity on your meal, which can be a shock, but it’s mentioned on their website when you call for tickets. Still, a night at TZ is worth it. The only thing I did not like about Teatro Zinzanni’s, was that I had to leave, but someone else had to enjoy the fun.

Let’s Play High Recommends Teatro Zinzanni.

The Sap is Running: Can Spring be Far Behind?

The Sap is Running: Can Spring be Far Behind?

The sap in maple trees is beginning to run, a sure sign that spring is on its way. Called “sugaring-off,” the period of time when the sap is collected can last as long as ten weeks, although much of the sap is collected during the first ten days.

The sugar in the sap nurtures the tree and provides fuel for the spring growing season. Sap from sugar maples has the highest sugar content, so it’s the variety most commonly tapped. A grove of sugar maple trees is called a “sugarbush” and maple syrup producers commonly refer to themselves as “sugarmakers.”

Way back, most of the maple sap was boiled down to make maple sugar. But when inexpensive white sugar became readily available, the market for maple sugar evaporated, and sugarmakers shifted much of the production to maple syrup.

Maple sap is typically 98% water and 2% sugar. “Real” maple syrup, by definition, is never more than 35% water, so the excess liquid has to be boiled off. “Imitation” maple syrup- or pancake syrup- is generally a mix of corn syrup and artificial flavoring.

Native Americans were the first to harvest maple sap. They used a tomahawk to slash the bark and angled the cut so the sap would flow away from the tree, which made it easier to collect.

Boiling off the water would have been difficult, since their containers were typically made of wood and couldn‘t be used over an open fire. If they left the collected sap out in the still frigid night air, some of the water would rise to the top and freeze, and the resulting ice could be easily removed.

The settlers soon realized that slashing the bark to collect the sap was inefficient and potentially harmful to the tree. They drilled tapholes, instead, and used buckets suspended from a metal spike to collect the sap. Still, turning the sap into a usable sweetener was a time-consuming, labor intensive process.

Putting heated stones in the sap to boil off excess water was another possibility, and the two methods may have been used in combination. Even so, the results would have been mediocre at best. As a result, maple sugar and maple syrup weren’t made in quantity until European settlers arrived with their iron pots.

Modern sugarmakers still collect maple sap by tapping the trees. A tree has to have a diameter of at least nine or ten inches at a height of four to five feet before it can be tapped without damaging the tree.

Using a 5/16 or 7/16-inch bit, sugarmakers drill tapholes that are 2 to 2 ½ -inches deep. While large trees can support multiple tapholes, tapping stresses the tree, and the number of taps rarely exceeds three or four.
A spout or “spile” is inserted in every taphole. The sap flows through the spout into either a covered bucket that’s emptied manually or plastic tubing that takes it directly to the sugarhouse for processing.

It takes forty gallons of sap to produce a single gallon of maple syrup or three quarts of maple sugar. Mechanization has made production easier, but boiling out the excess liquid in the sap is still the only way to make maple syrup.

Modern sugarhouses are equipped with storage tanks for the sap, a wood or oil-fired evaporator from boiling the sap, filters, barrels for storing the syrup, and packaging equipment.

Maple syrup is graded by color and flavor, rather than quality. Grade A Medium Amber (No.1 Light in Canada), the most popular grade of table syrup, is darker than the Light Amber produced earlier in the season and also has a more pronounced maple flavor. Grade A Dark Amber, or even a late-season Grade B, is typically used for cooking.

Maple syrup should be kept in glass containers and refrigerated after it’s opened. If it’s bought in quantity, the syrup can be portioned into freezer-safe containers and frozen. Tin containers aren’t recommended for long-term storage.

Locally, the River Trail Nature Center (3120 N. Milwaukee Avenue, 847.824.8360) in Northbrook gives Chicago-area residents an opportunity to experience sugaring-off first hand. Saturdays and Sundays from February 26-March 19, the center will be hosting 45 minute, family-oriented demonstrations at both 10:30 am and 1:30 pm. The culminating program on Sunday, March 20 (11 am-3 pm) includes a variety of activities. Pre-registration is required. Call for details. There is no charge for admission to any of the events.

NBA All-Star Game 2022: Latest news, starters and updateson February 19, 2022 at 7:52 pm

The NBA’s midseason showcase is here. The 2022 NBA All-Star Weekend kicks off Friday in Cleveland, and we have all of the information you need to know about the players, skills competitions, the game and more.

LeBron James (Los Angeles Lakers) and Kevin Durant (Brooklyn Nets) are the captains of the two teams in this year’s All-Star Game set for Sunday at 8 p.m. ET. Both players earned the honors by finishing with more fan votes than anyone in their respective conferences.

Chris Paul and Devin Booker, the starting backcourt of the Phoenix Suns, headline the roster of 14 reserves.

James and Durant picked their respective teams, a format the league first instituted in 2018, and the draft was packed with memorable quotes and a peculiar player selection. They also chose which charities they’d play for, with James choosing his I Promise School and Durant choosing the Greater Cleveland Food Bank.

Continue to follow this page as we present the latest from Cleveland.

The league’s midseason showcase will see some of the biggest stars meeting in Cleveland to play for bragging rights and to benefit multiple charities.

But before captains LeBron James and Kevin Durant picked their squads, several All-Stars were supported by social media campaigns to help ensure their spot on the roster (Phoenix Suns guard Devin Booker received a loving endorsement from Kendall Jenner). These posts targeted fans, who accounted for 50% of the final All-Star vote that determined the starters.

A host of teams and superstars looked to improve their favorite players’ shot at making the roster. Check out some of the memorable efforts.

The NBA announced the participants for the three events that will take place on Saturday of All-Star Weekend in Cleveland: the 3-point contest, the slam dunk contest and a revamped skills challenge that will feature three teams of three players.

The new skills challenge format will allow Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo to team up with his brothers, Alex and Thanasis, to compete together in a four-round competition that tests shooting, passing and dribbling.

Bulls’ LaVine says knee ‘better’ after treatmenton February 19, 2022 at 7:43 pm

CLEVELAND — Chicago Bulls All-Star Zach LaVine said he had platelet-rich plasma therapy, a cortisone injection and fluid drained from his ailing left knee last week and is hoping the treatment will help him get through the season.

LaVine missed the past three games before the All-Star Break to see specialists in Los Angeles, but will play in Sunday’s All-Star Game. He previously missed five games in January with knee swelling and soreness but an MRI showed no structural damage.

“I wanted to go out there and make sure everything was good,” LaVine said after Team Durant practice Saturday. “I’ve been battling the knee soreness for a little bit, not playing at 100 percent, but I want to continue to go out there and try to help us win. So the last three games I had to really just take it upon myself to make sure I was OK for the second half of the season. I feel way better.”

LaVine tore the ACL in the same knee in 2017 and with the Bulls hoping for a long playoff push, he said he was trying to be cautious. He indicated he might need to seek further treatment on the injury this summer.

“It will get me through the end of the season, and in the offseason I’ll be able to take care of it and try to get myself 100 percent,” LaVine said. “The season is important enough for me personally, I’ll be able to go out there and play and do what I have to do still.”

LaVine will be a free agent this summer, heightening the sensitivity of the situation and balancing current situation with future.

“I take it each day at a time,” LaVine said. “This season has been incredible for me, obviously, for many reasons, but I hate missing games personally. I just don’t like it. I try to play through as much as I can, and if I’m able to still be myself and contribute at the high level where I expect myself to, I’m going to do that.”

The Blackhawks couldn’t even give Marc-Andre Fleury one goalVincent Pariseon February 19, 2022 at 5:31 pm

The Chicago Blackhawks played a very tough game against the Dallas Stars on Friday. It was the second half of a back to back which always makes it even harder to win. Marc-Andre Fleury played out of his mind and the team still managed to lose.

You can make an argument that Fleury’s 29 save on 29 shot performance was his best of the entire season. Some of those saves that he made were absolutely incredible, including a save of the year candidate. Unfortunately, despite giving up 0 goals, the Hawks lost the game.

Fleury allowed two shootout goals (one in extra frames) and Alex DeBrincat was the only shooter to score for Chicago so they were unable to win despite a Fleury shutout. They couldn’t even get their elite goalie one goal in a game that he played so well and it was a shame to watch.

Of course, the writing is on the wall that Fleury will not end the season with Chicago. He is one of the NHL’s all-time great goalies and has never missed the playoffs in any of his years with the Pittsburgh Penguins or Vegas Golden Knights. This won’t be the year that he breaks that streak.

Marc-Andre Fleury has been sensational for the Chicago Blackhawks this year.

It will be really cool to see Fleury move on to another team that has a chance to win the Stanley Cup. Teams like the Colorado Avalance, Edmonton Oilers, and Los Angeles Kings are all in the mix and could use an upgrade at goaltender like Fleury.

He was the story from this game. The night before they gave up seven goals without him in the net and then he comes in the next day and doesn’t give up a single goal. He has proven that he is still incredibly capable of being an elite goalie in the league.

His years may be numbered but he should continue to be very good as long as he wants to be. It would have been nice to see him have winning success in Chicago but it just wasn’t meant to be. Still, it is cool to have a legend like that in town for a short time.

The Blackhawks will have another chance to score some goals for Fleury on Sunday when they play a Sunday afternoon game against the Florida Panthers. They are the best team in the NHL so it will be interesting to see if they are able to play well against them at home. Fleury will need to be that good again to even have a chance.

Roadblazing.com Drive…He Said 2022 Chicago Auto Show – Preview – Things To Do This Weekend in Chicago

The last time the Chicago Auto Show, the nation’s largest, convened in the humongous McCormick Place exhibition hall, it was February 2020. COVID-19 was a virus nearly contained in China and hadn’t arrived in America’s Great Lakes, that we then knew of. That was February 2020.

You might have heard or even attended when the Chicago Automotive Trade Association hosted a 2021 minified show this past summer…outdoors. Skipping an auto show year in Chicago has only had the dubious distinction of occurring during wartime.

In welcoming back the 2022 Chicago Auto show inside half of McCormick Place floor it is high time to put a period so wrought with health, economic and emotional havoc behind us. However, in compliance with State of Illinois directives and out of extra health caution, admittance to the 2022 Chicago Auto Show, DOES require the wearing of protective FACE MASKS.

Others have bestowed full plug-in battery electrification to names like names like Mustang (Mach-E) and F-150 (Lightning), Hummer (EV) and Silverado (EV).  Recent announced federal government grants intended to reduce the cost of hydrogen hydrolysis by as much as 80% spells a place for fuel cell electrics at the reduced hydrocarbon footprint energy table as well.

CLASSICS UPDATED: Not to be dissuaded by the battery and fuel cell electric crowd, there is a bevy of traditional gasoline powered car and light truck favorites, containing from frugal 3 cylinder to heart thumping 8 cylinder turbocharged power, including some intriguing updates to some endearing and enduring classics.

TECH IS WHERE IT’S AT: Even the more affordable new cars & and light trucks have a rear camera as standard equipment and offer some variation of Advanced Driver Assist System, which typically includes self-steering, accelerating and braking within an identifiable lane above a nominal speed and lane departure or rear cross traffic warning.

Release Radar – 2/11/22 – Delvon Lamar vs Spoon

Spoon has returned with Lucifer On The Sofa, and, so far, SO good! I really need to lean into this record and give it the time it deserves but I’m digging “Feels Alright,” “My Babe,” and “The Hardest Cut.”

My daughters’ favorite singer has returned with “Boyfriend.” Disney’s Dove Cameron shows off her body of art and her vocal prowess, with this sultry new number about a voice in her ear saying, “I could be a better boyfriend than him.” Isn’t that always the promise though?

Joesef caught my ear this week with “It’s Been A Little Heavy Lately.” The vocals are reminiscent of Hippo Campus but the jam enters funkier territory than the alt-rock crew would traverse. Dare I say this is closer to a Justin Timberlake vibe?

So many big releases this week, including the Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio’s Cold As Weiss, named after their new permanent drummer Dan Weiss. Now Delvon Lamarr (organ) and Jimmy James (electric guitar) bring us their third studio album of funky instrumentals and this album is a banger. I can’t wait to see these guys live!

Alfie Templeton is a multi-instrumentalist, producer, and songwriter who has been releasing demos since he was 13. There’s a reason he keeps making the cut each week and showing up on my #RADAR, he has great pop sensibilities, and “Broken” is no exception. This is a fun listen, playlist worthy for an upbeat minute.

Engelwood is killing it lately, especially with “Cruisin!” This is next-level shit, and I’m really enjoying the keyboard vibe. Break on through to the other side, bro!

I wish Kanye would just stay out of the media, as he just continues to tarnish his image with each and every post. “City Of Gods” is a really strong track, and Alicia sounds great! This is my first introduction to Fivio Foreign and I’m liking his immediacy and vocal delivery.

Andy Bell finally releases his second full-length album, Flicker, and it’s a mishmash of 90’s Britpop. The RIDE guitarist and singer continues to impress with incredible guitar work, smooth vocals, and catchy melodies.

Did Blind Melon really need this reverb remix treatment on their classic hit single, “No Rain?” I’m not sure, but it got me thinking about this band that released a few incredible albums back in the ’90s! What a sound they had.

Your Jazz Cut Of The Week is “Sunset Drive” by Saib. Put it on your playlist, and then feel cool when your friend asks, “Who’s the artist behind this low-key, hip-hop, jazz jam? “Oh, it’s Sai-B. He has a new record, Under The Stars, coming out this year (2022)!

NBA All-Star Game uniforms through the years — from short shorts to 90s flare and moreon February 19, 2022 at 1:57 pm

The 2022 NBA All-Star Game is the 71st edition of the midseason showcase.

While hosting the league’s biggest stars on one court has been a constant for several decades, save for 1999, due to the NBA lockout, much has transformed since the game’s beginning in 1951.

One change that easily catches the eye of viewers is the ever growing number of uniform combinations that have been worn throughout the years

2 Related

The 2021-2022 season has seen its fair share of fashion statements. As the league celebrates its 75th anniversary, 123 different uniforms have been worn throughout the Association, with teams each receiving four jersey editions: Association, Icon, City and Statement. As if that weren’t enough, three of the league’s original franchises, the New York Knicks, Golden State Warriors (then-Philadelphia) and Boston Celtics wore a fifth Classic edition that debuted in December.

In the fifth consecutive year of being outfitted by the Jordan Brand, All-Stars can add another jersey to their vast collection. But before that, here’s a look at how designs have evolved over the years.

Basketball Hall of Fame/NBAE/Getty Images

1951: East 111, West 94
Location: Boston
MVP: Ed Macauley, Boston Celtics

All-Stars playing for the Eastern Conference sported a simple white jersey with blue accents, while players for the opposing conference wore the inverse in the inaugural game. The belt is perhaps the most distinguishing feature of the uniform, as elastic waistbands were not standard on basketball shorts during the 1950s.

1960: East 125, West 115
Location: Philadelphia
MVP: Wilt Chamberlain, Philadelphia Warriors

The design during the 1960s was similar to that of previous years. The additions of the East or West conference designation on the front of the jerseys was a distinction that became common later in the decade.

1967: West 135, East 120
Location: Daly City, California
MVP: Rick Barry, San Francisco Warriors

The latter end of the aforementioned decade brought in a new trend of honoring the city in which the game was played. The Warriors’ City edition uniforms served as the first source of inspiration for the new look.

1972: West 112, East 110
Location: Inglewood, California
MVP: Jerry West, Los Angeles Lakers

Players donned Lakers-themed outfits when the team’s then-home arena, the Forum, hosted the All-Star Game.

1980: East 144, West 136 (OT)
Location: Landover, Maryland
MVP: George Gervin, San Antonio Spurs

Washington was the final team to have its jerseys serve as the model for the showdown between the two conferences.

Andrew D. Bernstein/NBAE via Getty Images

1985: West 140, East 129
Location: Indianapolis
MVP: Ralph Sampson, Houston Rockets

This style was quite popular, as the design was used for six consecutive years. It was even brought back after a short hiatus for the 2003 and 2004 All-Star Games.

Andrew D. Bernstein/NBAE via Getty Images

1991: East 116, West 114
Location: Charlotte, North Carolina
MVP: Charles Barkley, Philadelphia 76ers

Arguably the most memorable All-Star uniforms were created in the 90s, starting with this version that was in use from 1991 to 1994.

Andrew D. Bernstein/NBAE via Getty Images

1995: West 139, East 112
Location: Phoenix
MVP: Mitch Richmond, Sacramento Kings

Another recognizable design is a product of the past century. The vibrant colors were a stark contrast to the typical red, white and blue uniforms that were used for the majority of the All-Star Games’ existence.

Andrew D. Bernstein/NBAE via Getty Images

1997: East 132, West 120
Location: Cleveland
MVP: Glen Rice, Charlotte Hornets

The decade was capped off with another well-known trend for the league’s midseason showcase. Players from the Eastern Conference wore their home jerseys, while those from the Western Conference wore their road uniforms.

Andrew D. Bernstein/NBAE via Getty Images

2003: West 155, East 145 (2 OT)
Location: Atlanta
MVP: Kevin Garnett, Minnesota Timberwolves

This fan favorite design from the late 80s reemerged for two years in the early 2000s.

Jeff Gross/Getty Images

2004: West 136, East 132
Location: Los Angeles
MVP: Shaquille O’Neal, Los Angeles Lakers

The first style of the new millennium was distinguished by the diagonal lettering, but it was also the last time this format was used. Grand opening, grand closing.

Lisa Blumenfeld/Getty Images

2007: West 153, East 132
Location: Las Vegas
MVP: Kobe Bryant, Los Angeles Lakers

Cursive font made its return to the front of All-Star jerseys for the first time in over two decades, but this uniform was only used once.

Nathaniel S. Butler/NBAE via Getty Images

2014: East 163, West 155
Location: New Orleans
MVP: Kyrie Irving, Cleveland Cavaliers

Sleeved jerseys were quite a fad upon being introduced in the 2013-14 season. They were also seen during the NBA’s Christmas Day slate, along with making an appearance at the All-Star Game. This style was only used once.

Jim McIsaac/Getty Images

2015: West 163, East 158
Location: New York
MVP: Russell Westbrook, Oklahoma City Thunder

This minimalist design mirrors that of the All-Star Games’ earliest jerseys. It was the first time that black and white were the primary uniform colors, with the former representing the Western Conference and the latter being used for the Eastern Conference. Players’ first and last names were also printed on the back.

Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images

2018: Team LeBron 148, Team Stephen 145
Location: Los Angeles
MVP: LeBron James, Cleveland Cavaliers

This was the first year that the league adopted its current format, making East and West designations a thing of the past. Similar to the style used in 2015, black and white differentiates the two squads, but the logo of each player’s team is prominently displayed on the front.

NBA All-Star: Experts’ picks for Saturday night and Team LeBron vs. Team Duranton February 19, 2022 at 12:49 pm

play

The NBA’s most viral moments before the All-Star break (2:30)From the meanest crossovers, the filthiest posterizing dunks, and captivating record-breaking nights, here are the NBA’s most viral moments before the All-Star break. (2:30)

NBA All-Star Weekend is underway, as Friday night’s Rising Stars Challenge and celebrity game kicked off the festivities in Cleveland.

But which stars will take home the hardware during All-Star Saturday?

The night begins with a revamped skills challenge, as three teams of three — Team Cavs, Team Antetokounmpo and Team Rooks — face off. Then, four All-Stars — Zach LaVine, Karl-Anthony Towns, Fred VanVleet and Trae Young — headline an eight-player field for the 3-point contest. The night wraps up with a four-player dunk contest, as electrifying rookie Jalen Green and 2021 runner-up Obi Toppin take the stage.

On Sunday, will Team LeBron capture another All-Star Game win? LeBron James has hit all four of his previous All-Star captains’ drafts — will he make it five? Either way, with Cleveland Cavaliers star Darius Garland on LeBron’s roster, the two should have plenty of fun putting on a show for the fans inside Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.

Our NBA experts are picking the winners for Saturday and Sunday’s action, including which player will take home the NBA All-Star Game Kobe Bryant MVP Award.
