Chicago Cubs make a huge splash with Seiya Suzuki signingVincent Pariseon March 16, 2022 at 1:32 pm

The Chicago Cubs made a huge splash in the free-agent market. Less than 12 hours after learning that Anthony Rizzo is going back to the New York Yankees, they have come to terms with international free agent Seiya Suzuki.

The Japanese star outfielder, according to David Kaplan of ESPN 1000 and NBC Sports Chicago, is on a five-year deal worth 70 million dollars. This is a huge move for the Cubs as they try to get back to their winning ways.

Seiya Suzuki is an incredibly talented baseball player who has a lot of hype. He dropped the pitching part of his game so he isn’t the next Shohei Ohtani but he could be a really good hitter like him. The Cubs are hoping that he is somewhat similar in that aspect.

Moves like this are risky. 70 million dollars is a lot for someone who has never played Major League Baseball before. This league is a lot different than anything he has ever seen so it will be interesting to see how he adjusts.

Seiya Suzuki is coming to the Chicago Cubs on a five-year deal at $70 million.

After meeting with the #Cubs front office and chairman Tom Ricketts on Monday evening, Japanese star Seiya Suzuki has agreed to a 5 year/70 million dollar deal with the Chicago Cubs. #TakeThat

— David Kaplan (@thekapman) March 16, 2022

To be honest, it is okay to be excited about this. Suzuki, as mentioned before, may not be Ohtani but he could be a very big part of the Chicago Cubs lineup. They desperately needed someone like Suzuki and now they got him. It only took one late-night meeting with Tom Ricketts to get it done.

Suzuki joins a very interesting lineup. We don’t know the future of Willson Contreras so that needs to be the next thing sorted out. If these two have guys like Frank Schwindel, Patrick Wisdom, Nick Madrigal, and Ian Happ amongst others playing at the top of their game, it could be a really nice group.

At this point of the post-lockout offseason, Suzuki’s MLB production could be the key to 2022 Chicago Cubs’ success. The Cincinnati Reds have sold off almost their whole team and the Pittsburgh Pirates were already terrible so it is just down to the St. Louis Cardinals and Milwaukee Brewers at this point.

This feels like a winner for the Chicago Cubs. They added an international player from Japan who has a lot of hype in a year where the expectations are mixed. If he fails, the Cubs will be what we thought they were.

If he is amazing, they could take advantage of the extra playoff berth in each league. This is something to be excited about for Chicago Cubs baseball.

Chicago Bears gain value with Nicholas Morrow, Lucas Patrick signingsRyan Heckmanon March 16, 2022 at 1:00 pm

All day on Tuesday, Chicago Bears fans waited for Ryan Poles to make a move. In fact, it was a relatively quiet afternoon overall around the NFL.

Finally, later on Tuesday evening, the Bears made a couple of moves.

First, Poles and the Bears agreed to terms on a deal with former Las Vegas Raiders linebacker Nicholas Morrow (terms have yet to surface). Shortly thereafter, the Bears also signed former Green Bay Packers interior lineman Lucas Patrick to a 2-year, $8 million deal.

With both Morrow and Patrick, Poles not only showed patience, but also that he wanted to wait for value in these two signings.

Nicholas Morrow and Lucas Patrick will provide the Bears with exactly what Ryan Poles and Matt Eberflus are looking for.

Looking at Morrow, he is a former undrafted free agent out of Greenville who worked his way onto the Radiers’ roster and stuck for the last four years. He eventually became an important piece to this defense, especially last year when he started 11 games before getting injured.

Morrow runs a 4.5 and fits extremely well in Eberflus’ plan for a fast defense. Next to Roquan Smith, who also ran a similar 40 time, Morrow will offer plenty of speed and also the ability to drop into coverage.

At just 26 years old, Morrow comes in entering the prime of his career and looks to be a fantastic value for the Bears. He’s good in run support, but again, he is willing and capable to drop into coverage.

In Patrick, the Bears get a 28-year-old lineman who can do it all. He has played both guard positions, along with center, at times. Patrick is more of the athletic profile in terms of an interior lineman, which is what the Bears will want in this new scheme.

Patrick has been graded well in both pass protection and run blocking over the last couple of years, and comes to the Bears as a no-doubt starter — but for a great price at just $4 million per year.

Poles hasn’t taken the sexy approach to free agency, but those “in the know” wouldn’t have expected him to. He’s lined everything up for 2023 and is working his way towards what could be a huge offseason next year.

For now, he’s going to add smart contracts to this team, and only players who fit exactly what he and Eberflus are looking for. Poles has proven he will not settle, and he will not overpay. Both of these players are a prime example of just that.

The Khalil Mack trade comes full circle for the Chicago BearsDominique Blantonon March 16, 2022 at 12:00 pm

New Chicago Bears General Manager Ryan Poles is shaking things up with the recent trade to send Edge Rusher Khalil Mack to the Los Angeles Chargers for a 2022 2nd rounder and 2023 sixth-round pick.

Four years ago, the Chicago Bears made a blockbuster trade to acquire Khalil Mack from the Las Vegas Raiders (formally the Oakland Raiders). Now, four years later, the Bears are sending him back to the AFC West but to the Los Angeles Chargers for a 2nd round pick in 2022 and a 6th round pick in 2023.

When the Bears decided to make the move to acquire Mack, former Bears general manager Ryan Pace was making it with the thought in mind that he felt the team was ready to compete for a championship. So, he took advantage of a quarterback on a rookie contract in Mitch Trubisky.

For new GM Ryan Poles, the decision to move on from Mack made too much sense despite the fan’s emotional attachment to the edge rusher.

Khalil Mack’s departure is his tenure coming around full circle for the Chicago Bears.

You are coming off a 6-11 season and heading into the offseason with very few picks and although a decent amount of cap space, a lot of holes to fill with only 20+ players under contract. Although you eat 24 million in dead cap, the Bears get 6.5 million in savings.

The biggest reward will come in 2023. The Bears are slated to have approximately 121 million in cap space. There is more than enough to shape the roster into a contender. 2022, Poles is using to build the foundation of the roster and clean up past mistakes from the previous GM.

If he thought that this team was close to contending for a Super Bowl, Mack would still be here. The move indicates that he does not view the roster in the same light as most fans. The harsh truth is while many of us love Mack as a player, he simply was not living up to the contract that was given to him four years ago. After the 2018 season, he has been on a decline.

Mack was once viewed as the best defensive player in the league but we now begin to see him barely crack most National media’s top ten edge rushers with each year. At the same time, we cannot fault Pace for making the deal.

It was the right move to make at the time with how the roster was setting up, with a young QB at the time on a rookie contract. In hindsight, the Bears still won the trade despite it not living up to expectations when it was made.

The Mack trade was Pace’s signature move in his tenure and now Poles trading away the 31-year old vet edge rusher is his. For Bears fans, we are starting to see a shift in the priorities of the roster.

Despite the hiring of a defensive coach, Poles very likely want to shift most of the money on the offensive side of the ball. Throwing money and resources at the offensive line, wide receiver, etc. might be the new key. The writing is on the wall that this team will be built around Justin Fields, the right way.

Former Cubs 1B Anthony Rizzo has a new MLB contractVincent Pariseon March 16, 2022 at 11:00 am

The Chicago Cubs traded Anthony Rizzo at last year’s MLB Trade Deadline. It was a move that was met with both praise and criticism as the team tore apart the core that ended the 108 year World Series drought.

Rizzo ended up with the New York Yankees where he was welcomed with open arms. The regular season ended with them in a Wild Card berth which ended up being bad news. They fell to the Boston Red Sox in that game so Rizzo’s time in New York appeared to be short-lived.

It became clear that the Yankees wanted to sign Freddie Freeman to be the new first baseman. He is a clear upgrade over Rizzo but that also means that more teams are going after him. It made sense to think that Freeman would sign first but that is not how it went down.

Late on Tuesday night, it came out that the New York Yankees were going to re-sign Rizzo. He is going to go back to New York and try to win a division title with them there. It doesn’t feel like the right decision by either party but it is what it is.

Former Chicago Cubs superstar Anthony Rizzo is headed to the New York Yankees.

There were some rumors that he was going to be coming back to the Cubs but it felt like nonsense the whole time. The Cubs traded him away and there is nothing he can do about that. There is absolutely no point in either side going backward, only forward.

There is still a lot of opportunities to land other big free agents and the Yankees are all-in on a lot of them. They should be a pretty good team but nobody is sure that they are as good as the Boston Red Sox, Tampa Bay Rays, or Toronto Blue Jays which is interesting.

If Rizzo plays well along with Josh Donaldson and some of the other usual suspects in New York, the Yankees could be good enough to win a division. This is an organization that hasn’t been under .500 in over 20 years so expect a fair amount of success at minimum.

It is a shame to see him continue playing away from Chicago. He brought so much to that Cubs team in 2016 that he has earned the right to make some money with the Yankees. With Kris Bryant and Kyle Schwarber still unsigned, the rumors are going to be wild. Don’t freak out about them until they happen.

Source: 1B Rizzo back with Yanks on $32M pacton March 16, 2022 at 11:52 am

First baseman Anthony Rizzo, who finished last season with the Yankees after a trade from the Chicago Cubs, agreed to a multiyear contract Tuesday night to return to New York, pending a physical, a source told ESPN’s Jesse Rogers.

The contract is for two years and $32 million with an opt-out clause after one season, a source said.

During his decade-long career with the Cubs, Rizzo was as reliable as anyone in the batter’s box and in the field. He was a consistent All-Star and Gold Glove winner and garnered MVP votes in five consecutive seasons. But his numbers dropped over the past two seasons, culminating in the trade to New York.

Rizzo got off to a hot start with his new team but a bout with COVID-19 interrupted his second half. He still managed 22 home runs split between the Cubs and Yankees but his .783 OPS was his lowest since 2013.

Rizzo’s defense hasn’t suffered as he’s aged and a perennial back ailment hasn’t kept him out of the lineup for more than a few days at a time. He’s still a reliable left-handed bat but may never again be an MVP-caliber player.

Rizzo is just one of five left-handed hitters in the long history of the Cubs to hit 30 or more home runs in a season. And he’s just one of two players to do it multiple times. He averaged 29 home runs over a seven-year span, helping the Cubs to the postseason from 2015 to 2018.

He was also the de facto leader of the team, signing a long-term contract with the Cubs in 2013. That ended last year after the Cubs picked up two team option years in 2020 and 2021. The sides discussed another deal as recently as this past spring but after an agreement couldn’t be reached, Rizzo was traded to the Yankees the day before the trade deadline this past summer.

New York, after a slow start, rallied with Rizzo and Co. to make the postseason, where the Yankees were eliminated by the Boston Red Sox, another team that was mentioned prominently in trade rumors once Rizzo became available.

The agreement likely takes the Yankees out of the mix for fellow first baseman and free agent Freddie Freeman, It also creates some uncertainty for first baseman Luke Voit, the 2020 AL home run champion who played in just 68 games during an injury-plagued 2021.

‘Incredible’ Kyrie posts career-high 60 in Nets’ winon March 16, 2022 at 1:49 am

ORLANDO, Fla. — Brooklyn Nets guard Kyrie Irving scored a career-high 60 points — also a franchise record — during a 150-108 domination of the Orlando Magic on Tuesday night. It was a performance that left both his teammates and coaches in awe.

“He’s just incredible,” Nets coach Steve Nash said. “I felt like he had my career highlight reel in the first 12 minutes of the game. It’s special to watch him every night — but it’s special to watch him on nights like this, where he’s in total control, total command. He gets wherever he wants and is able to finish amongst the trees. It’s just a pleasure to see it up close and to be a part of it.”

As part of his career night, Irving put together one of the most impressive offensive halves of basketball in recent NBA history with a 41-point outburst in the first half.

In 23 first-half minutes, Irving went 14-for-19 from the field, 6-for-7 from beyond the arc and 7-for-7 from the free throw line while adding 3 rebounds and 3 assists. By the end of the half, the Orlando crowd was cheering Irving every time he hit a shot, a trend that gained even more energy throughout the game.

“I’m sure in the first quarter y’all seen it developing,” Nets star Kevin Durant said. “Sixteen in the first and then midway through the second all of us on the bench are still looking — it’s just like that every game for Ky, when you look up and like “Damn, he got 10, 12, 14 points already.

“We seen he was well on his way to a high-scoring night so 60 — the night after Karl Towns had an incredible performance, and then to have Kyrie do it the next night, the league is in an incredible place right now.”

After hitting his final 3-pointer of the night to reach 60 points, Irving pointed to the ceiling and tapped his heart as the Magic fans gave him a standing ovation and chanted “Kyrie! Kyrie!”

The Magic took a timeout right after the shot with 8:32 left in regulation as Irving got a hug from coach Steve Nash and high-fives and hugs from the rest of his teammates and coaches as Durant waved his arms in an effort to get the fans even louder.

“I’m just glad that it wasn’t an empty 50-plus game,” Irving said.

Irving, 29, who finished the game 20-for-31 from the field, 8-for-12 from beyond the arc and 12-for-13 from the free throw line, set multiple records with his first-half showing. It was the highest-scoring half of his career and the highest-scoring half for any player this season.

The last player to score as many as Irving in a half was Phoenix Suns guard Devin Booker, who dropped 51 points in the second half of a March 24, 2017, game against the Boston Celtics. Booker finished that game with 70 points.

Irving’s 41 points were the most one player has scored in one half against the Magic in the franchise’s history and his 60 total for the game was the most any player has scored in one game in the history of Amway Center. The Nets’ 86 first-half points are also a franchise record — and the most the Magic have ever given up in one half.

Irving, who is currently able to play in only road games because of New York City’s vaccination mandate, entered Tuesday averaging 30.3 points in three March contests, including a 50-point performance in a March 8 win over the Charlotte Hornets.

With Tuesday’s performance, Durant — who scored 53 points in Sunday’s win over the New York Knicks — and Irving became the first teammates in NBA history to score 50 or more points in back-to-back games.

“Making history, man. making history,” Irving said. “Doing it with that guy is very special. But credit goes to our group. Our guys in our locker room, they really believe in us, they really rock with us, there’s not a doubt in our mind that they really believe that we can do something special. And not just this year, but for years to come. We have a good group. And we’re all sacrificing something that’s bigger than ourselves.”

As it stands now, because of the mandate, Irving will be able to play in only three of the Nets’ final 13 games. He remains hopeful that mayor Eric Adams will decide to roll back the mandate.

“My faith in things turning around hasn’t changed, it hasn’t wavered,” Irving said. “But I wouldn’t be able to sit up here and talk to you guys comfortably unless I had a big supporting group behind me. And they’ve been selfless this whole time.”

Irving said he would be in attendance for Wednesday’s game against the Dallas Mavericks at Barclays Center and joked that he would “probably wear a media pass.” As for the fact he had to watch Sunday’s win over the Knicks from a courtside seat, Irving admitted that it wasn’t “the best feeling in the world.”

“It’s a little awkwardness,” Irving said. “But showing up there with my family and getting a warm embrace from New York, Brooklyn, just everybody that’s there to support the Nets and support our organization, support me. And just support what’s going on out here and want to see a change.”

Irving spent a couple minutes on the bench during the first half while getting his left hand checked by the Nets’ training staff. He appeared to be in a little bit of discomfort with a small cut but stayed in the game after getting his thumb wrapped.

Irving earned even more cheers from the Orlando crowd in the second half, drawing oohs and ahhs in anticipation of each move to the basket.

After an air-ball in the third quarter, many in the crowd rose to their feet and started chanting his name in appreciation of what they had seen throughout the night. It was at that moment where he knew his night was different.

“Probably the air-ball,” Irving said with a laugh. “To be honest with you. I was like, “Ah, I don’t usually shoot these type of shots, but I’m just going to get in my Kobe bag real quick and live with the results. Triple-team coming at me and I just looked over at the coaching staff and they were just like, “Keep playing …

“When you’re a kid scoring a bunch of points it means something, but when you’re in the best league in the world doing it against the greatest athletes that are playing our game, it means a little bit more.”

Kyrie’s career-best scoring night provoked big reactions on NBA Twitteron March 16, 2022 at 2:50 am

Kyrie Irving might have just had the game of his life.

The 29-year-old Brooklyn Nets guard dropped 60 points en route to an 150-108 win over the Orlando Magic on Tuesday night. Irving shot exceptionally well, shooting 20-for-31 from the field and 8-for-12 from beyond the arc. He dropped 41 in the first half alone — the most anyone has scored in a single half since Devin Booker‘s 51 in 2017. He now holds the all-time record for points in a single game in Nets history. The win puts the Nets at 36-33 for the season and is the latest in a four-game winning streak for the team.

Irving is the latest player to score at least 50 points in the month of March. His performance Tuesday night ties an NBA record for most 50-point games in a single month. LeBron James (twice), Jayson Tatum, Kevin Durant and Karl-Anthony Towns have the others. It’s also the first time that players have scored 60 points on consecutive dates since 1962 — Wilt Chamberlain did it all by himself in back-to-back games back then.

As expected, the NBA went wild on social media with praise of Irving’s historic game.
