Sources: Rockies, Bryant reach 7-yr., $182M dealon March 17, 2022 at 2:02 am

Third baseman Kris Bryant and the Colorado Rockies are in agreement on a seven-year, $182 million contract, sources confirmed to ESPN on Wednesday.

Bryant is headed to his third team in eight months after spending his first six major league seasons with the Chicago Cubs, who traded him to the San Francisco Giants last July.

He got off to a hot start with the Cubs but cooled off some after the trade, slashing .265/.353/.481 between the two teams. The 2016 National League MVP and World Series champion had a combined 25 homers and 73 RBIs last season, and he pounded out eight hits in the Giants’ five-game playoff loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Despite a midseason slump that precipitated the trade, Bryant earned his fourth career All-Star selection during a solid rebound from a rough 2020 season in which he struggled at the plate and with injuries.

The Rockies clearly liked what they saw: Bryant landed a huge free-agent deal to move to Colorado as a middle-of-the-order bat and a fielder who can play third base, first base or the outfield. Bryant also is an obvious candidate to join Charlie Blackmon among the Rockies’ designated hitters.

The 2015 NL Rookie of the Year’s right-handed swing also will offset the left-handed slant to the outfield lineup for the Rockies, who haven’t won a playoff game since 2009.

MLB Network first reported on Bryant’s deal with the Rockies.

Colorado has made a major investment in being competitive in the NL West after its roster upheaval over the past year-plus, including last year’s trade of Nolan Arenado and the impending probable departure of Trevor Story.

Bryant got off to a hot start last season, hitting .322 in April and .327 in May. His 1.078 OPS in April had Cubs fans excited, but a .114 batting average in June, during which he had just nine hits for the month, cooled off MVP talk. Eventually, he was traded to the Giants for prospects as his seven-year career in Chicago came to an end.

One of Bryant’s best attributes is his ability to play all over the diamond as an above-average fielder. In 2021, he played in 93 games in the outfield, 55 at third base and a dozen more at first base.

Since 2017, Bryant’s production and power have been limited due to shoulder, knee, ankle and hand injuries. But he has always been a reliable player who can still hit at a high rate when healthy. In many lineups, he’s one of the tougher outs for the opposition, and he’s pitched accordingly because of that.

Overall, Bryant is a career .278 hitter with 167 homers and 487 RBIs, but he is about to get a full season of play at hitter-friendly Coors Field, where he has batted .263 (15-for-57) with two homers, nine RBIs and a .757 OPS.

ESPN’s Jesse Rogers and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

The Chicago Cubs made their first major move of the spring free-agent frenzy, bringing in outfielder Seiya Suzuki. The five-year, $85 million deal carries the highest salary for a Japanese position player coming to Major League Baseball and the second-largest behind pitcher Masahiro Tanaka’s $155 million contract with the New York Yankees in 2014.

Former Cubs star Kris Bryant has a new MLB destinationVincent Pariseon March 16, 2022 at 10:44 pm

The Chicago Cubs are officially out on most of their former core that helped them win the World Series in 2016. Javier Baez signed with the Detroit Tigers, Kyle Schwarber is with the Philadelphia Phillies, Anthony Rizzo is with the New York Yankees, and the fresh news is that Kris Bryant is with the Colorado Rockies.

Bryant is the best player in this group. He is going to thrive in 2022 with this Rockies team. They will have a tough time competing with the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, and San Diego Padres in the NL West but you have to respect them for trying.

Bryant is on a seven-year deal worth 182 million dollars. That is a lot of money for a man who can play multiple positions. In 2021, he proved that he can play every position on the diamond besides pitcher and catcher. That will come in extremely handy for the Rockies.

He might go back to playing third base with Colorado as they are over a year removed from trading Nolan Arenado to the St. Louis Cardinals. The need is there. This is an incredible opportunity for him to play on a team with no expectations and elevate them.

Third baseman Kris Bryant and the Colorado Rockies are in agreement on a seven-year, $182 million contract, sources familiar with the deal tell ESPN.

— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) March 16, 2022

Kris Bryant has a new home with the Rockies after a lot of years with the Cubs.

In 2021, the Rockies were one of the worst road teams in the league and one of the best home teams in the league. Their advantage at Coors Field is incredible. It is a hitters park that Bryant will love playing at. The ball soars there so expect him to hit lots of home runs and give his team a chance to win.

The Cubs are going to miss having a guy like this. He is one of the most talented players that they have ever had but it didn’t end the way that they wanted it to. The past is the past now and they will have plenty of opportunities to see him as he is staying in the National League.

Now that the 2016 World Series era is pretty much over, it is time for the organization to move on. We don’t know if they will ultimately rebuild or not but some of their recent moves suggest that trying to compete is on thier mind.

Whether they are able to or not remains to be seen but they are going to try. It was fun with Kris Bryant while it lasted but now he is on to his next chapter with the Colorado Rockies. It is fair to wish him well with his new team.

Former Cubs reliever joins Javier Baez in new MLB cityVincent Pariseon March 16, 2022 at 5:00 pm

The Chicago Cubs traded away Javier Baez in 2021. He was one of many players to leave town as a result of the roster rebuild that they began. Now, Baez is with the Detroit Tigers as he signed a big deal with them before the MLB lockout.

Joining him in Detroit now is former Cubs reliever, Andrew Chafin. He was a fan favorite before the Cubs traded him away as well. He became a member of the Oakland A’s via trade but they failed to reach the playoffs after being buyers at the deadline.

We have seen the A’s sell off a lot of their players as well now so we knew Chafin wasn’t going back. Going to this up-and-coming Detroit team isn’t a bad idea as they might surprise some people this year. They probably aren’t good enough to win the division but a postseason berth with the extra team making it is certainly on the table.

In 2021, he had an ERA of 1.83 with a 0.932 WHIP and 64 strikeouts over 68.2 innings pitched. All of this accumulated a WAR of 2.9 which is really good for that amount of innings. If he is able to duplicate that in 2022, Detroit will consider him well worth the money.

Andrew Chafin was outstanding for the Chicago Cubs and Oakland A’s in 2021.

Chafin was outstanding with the Cubs and A’s. That was enough success in 2021 to earn a two-year deal worth 13 million dollars. He joins a Tigers bullpen that could absolutely use the help if they plan on competing hard in 2022. Chafin can certainly help with that.

Having Baez there has to be cool for him. Each of them was there with the Cubs during the tough times and now brighter days are ahead for both of them. The Tigers are going to be good in short order and they might be a part of it.

We have seen how important bullpens are in Major League Baseball. The team they are chasing in the AL Central is the Chicago White Sox who have one of the best bullpens in the league. Adding Chafin gets them closer but there is a long way to go. As for the Cubs, finding more relievers like him to rebuild their bullpen is going to be a major key.

What you need to know for Wednesday night’s NBA slate

By Jim McCormick and Kyle Soppe

Nothing But Net: The Nets have had a player eclipse 50 points in consecutive games and while it’s unlikely that you can find a player to do that off the wire, Bruce Brown (80% available) has been productive when given the opportunity. Brown has averaged 16.3 PPG on 50% shooting to go along with 6.5 RPG and 3.5 APG when playing at home. The Mavs elite defense figures to key on Kevin Durant tonight, so look for the extended usage to continue for Brown at Barclays Center.

Thunder Up: Darius Bazley (83% available) has averaged 22.7 PPG, 6.3 RPG, three assists and three 3-pointers over his past three games. The Thunders face a Spurs team that sits 27th in defensive rating over the past 10 games and Bazley should play heavy minutes in a plus matchup.

Blazing Values: Portland’s injury report lists seven players ruled out for tonight’s matchup in Madison Square Garden against the Knicks. Jusuf Nurkic and Anfernee Simons join Damian Lillard in street clothes for this one, which means Josh Hart (44% available), Trendon Watford (84%), and Drew Eubanks (97%) are positioned for a big game. Hart has become a league-winning waiver addition in recent weeks, while Watford has posted at least 22 points in three straight and can deliver on scoring and rebounding props. Meanwhile, Eubanks has averaged 36 points and 22 rebounds across his last two games.

Gold Rush: The Nuggets face a Wizards team that has allowed 119.7 points per 100 possessions to opponents over the past 10 games, the third-most points in the league during that timeframe. With Aaron Gordon questionable, Will Barton (43% available) is thriving as a complementary scorer and should help fantasy managers in all formats.

Getting Garland: Evan Mobley faces a stiff challenge against Joel Embiid with Jarrett Allen still sidelined, but Darius Garland is poised to be a DFS building block against a 76ers team that couldn’t keep him out of the paint earlier this month. Even at $9,000, there’s room for value with Garland. He posted 66.5 DraftKings points in the loss at Wells Fargo Center a few weeks back. It’s also a good spot for Kevin Love to fire from beyond the arc, as the 76ers lack size at forward.

Game of the Night

Line: Mavericks (-2)
Moneyline: Mavericks (-129), Nets (+106)
Total: 220.5 points
BPI Projected Total: 224.5 points
BPI Win%: Mavericks (57.7%)

Key players ruled out: Kyrie Irving

Notable: That’s now four straight unders in Dallas games (unders are 11-5 over their past 16).

Fantasy Streamer: Dorian Finney-Smith. Finney-Smith is an excellent streamer against the Nets with Reggie Bullock out. He has scored 10 points or more in six of the Mavs past seven games and from a betting perspective, you should consider taking his over at 11.5 points. — Eric Moody

Best bet: Kevin Durant over 29.5 points. Kyrie Irving led the way offensively for the Nets against the Magic last night and Durant will fill that role against the Mavericks tonight. Dallas allow opponents to take a lot of midrange shots. Durant’s midrange jumpers are a high percentage of his field goal attempts. He’s made 54% of them this year. — Moody

Best bet: Under 220.5 points. The Mavericks have been one of the best defenses in the league since the calendar flipped to 2022, and on Sunday they faced the Celtics in a defense-heavy contest where neither team scored 100 points. Overall, the Mavericks and their opponents have scored under 220.5 points in six of their last eight games. The Nets and their opponents have also scored under 220.5 points in seven of the last nine games that Kyrie Irving has missed. — Andre Snellings

Will it be Jayson Tatum or Stephen Curry who is all smiles after Thursday’s meeting? Winslow Townson-USA TODAY Sports

Line: Hornets (-1.5)
Moneyline: Hornets (-127), Hawks (+107)
Total: 237.5 points
BPI Projected Total: 229.5 points
BPI Win%: Hornets (52%)

Key players ruled out: John Collins

Notable: The Hawks enter this game having failed to cover the spread in each of their past six games.

Best bet: De’Andre Hunter over 14.5 points. Hunter has averaged 17.6 PPG and 33.2 MPG over the past seven games. Hunter is also available in 87.6% of ESPN leagues, so fantasy managers can stream him. Small forwards have had success against the Hawks this season. This position has averaged 22 points per game against Atlanta.

Best bet: Trae Young over 43.5 points + assists + rebounds. Young has averaged 33 PPG, 10.2 APG, and 4.2 RPG over the past five games. The statistical fun should continue against a Hornets team that ranks 19th in points allowed per 100 possessions, allows lots of offensive rebounds and opponents to shoot a high effective field goal percentage.

Line: 76ers (-4)
Moneyline: 76ers (-180), Cavaliers (+155)
Total: 217.5 points
BPI Projected Total: 217 points
BPI Win%: 76ers (57.1%)

Key players ruled out: Jarrett Allen, Rajon Rondo

Notable: After covering five of seven games, the 76ers have dropped three straight ATS.

Fantasy Streamer: Brandon Goodwin. With Rajon Rondo out, fantasy managers should consider streaming Goodwin. While it was disappointing that Goodwin (99.8% available) played only 12 minutes on Monday night against the Clippers, he will continue to serve as the Cavaliers’ backup point guard.

Best bet: Tobias Harris over 21.5 points + rebounds Harris has averaged 15 PPG, 6 RPG, and 36 MPG over his past seven games. He has been relegated to a secondary offensive role due to James Harden‘s arrival and Tyrese Maxey‘s excellent play but should succeed against the Cavaliers considering the matchups he will face.

Line: Nuggets (-5.5)
Moneyline: Nuggets (-230), Wizards (+190)
Total: 228.5 points
BPI Projected Total: 231 points
BPI Win%: Nuggets (65.5%)

Key players ruled out: none

Notable: Seven straight Washington games have gone over the total and the Wizards have failed to cover each of their past four.

Line: Knicks (-11)
Moneyline: Knicks (-700), Blazers (+475)
Total: 224.5 points
BPI Projected Total: 214.5 points
BPI Win%: Knicks (84.3%)

Key players ruled out: Nerlens Noel, Eric Bledsoe

Questionable: Justise Winslow

Notable: The Knicks have followed up a six game ATS losing streak with six straight covers entering tonight.

Line: Suns (-11)
Moneyline: Suns (-670), Rockets (+475)
Total: 235.5 points
BPI Projected Total: 225 points
BPI Win%: Suns (72%)

Key players ruled out: none

Notable: Houston is evaluated as a struggling team, and yet, they continue to struggle ATS. The Rockets have covered just five of their past 17 (5-11-1).

Fantasy Streamer: Cameron Payne is still available in more than 60 percent of leagues, and he shouldn’t be. In his last seven games, he has averaged 16.6 PPG, 9.9 APG, 4.1 RPG, 2.1 3PG and 1.3 SPG. He should be a nightly starter in every league. — Snellings

Best bet: Nuggets (-5.5). The Wizards have lost four straight games by an average of 10.5 PPG. Three of those losses were to struggling teams that are a combined 1-15 in their recent games. Meanwhile, the Nuggets are hot (winners of 11 of their last 14 games) and desperately trying to catch the Jazz at the top of the division. Denver also will enter into tonight’s game with an optimistic mindset after receiving news that Jamal Murray is close to a return. — Snellings

Line: Timberwolves (-8.5)
Moneyline: Timberwolves (-420), Lakers (+320)
Total: 237 points
BPI Projected Total: – 232.5 points
BPI Win%: Timberwolves (79.6%)

Key players ruled out:

Notable: Both teams had a player recently crack the 50-point plateau, but it’s been the Timberwolves that have been the more profitable team to back recently, as they’ve covered eight over their past nine games.

Best bet: Timberwolves (-8.5). The Timberwolves have won eight of their last nine games and each of their last seven victories have been by at least nine points (average 22.6 points margin in those seven wins). Some of those wins have been against very strong teams like the Heat and Warriors. The Lakers are going in the opposite direction, losers of eight of their last 10 games with five of their losses being by more than nine points (average 14.2 points margin in those eight losses). — Snellings

Notable: Under tickets have come through in six of San Antonio’s past eight games… the Spurs have also failed to cover six of their past eight games.

Best bet: Jakob Poeltl over 25.5 points + rebounds. Poeltl has averaged 17 PPG, 9.4 RPG, and 31.5 MPG over his past 10 games. Oklahoma City presents a good matchup for him. Centers have averaged 21 PPG and 18 RPG against Oklahoma City this season. — Moody

Key players ruled out:

Notable: The Kings aren’t perfect, but they are 4-1-1 ATS over their past six games and are getting plenty of points tonight.

Best bet: Grayson Allen over 9.5 points. Allen has been a solid contributor on the Bucks and has averaged 11.2 PPG this season. The Kings have allowed the most points to shooting guards (24.6 per game), so Allen is likely to succeed. He is a viable streamer in deeper formats as well. — Moody

Line: Raptors (-1.5)
Moneyline: Raptors (-130), Clippers (+110)
Total: 218 points
BPI Projected Total: 211.5 points

Blackhawks lose to Bruins despite Marc-Andre Fleury’s heroicsVincent Pariseon March 16, 2022 at 3:48 pm

The Chicago Blackhawks proved how bad of a hockey team they really are on Tuesday night when they allowed the Boston Bruins to walk all over them at the United Center. The Hawks have had some good moments in 2021-22 but that game was an accurate visual of what this team is.

As bad as they played, they collected a standings point as they lost to the Bruins in overtime by a final score of 2-1. They had a chance to win the game that they played so poorly in thanks to Marc-Andre Fleury who had one of the best games of his NHL career.

Fleury made 46 saves on 48 shots. Unfortunately for him, one of those shots that he didn’t save was the overtime game-winning goal by Matt Grzelcyk. Taylor Hall found Grzelcyk with a very nice pass and he did not miss the open part of the cage.

Linus Ullmark also played well for the Bruins even though he only faced 20 shots. There were some high danger chances made by top Blackhawks players and he was there when needed. As a result of both goalies playing well, it was 0-0 after two periods of play.

The Chicago Blackhawks were dominated by the Boston Bruins and still almost won.

Patrice Bergeron scored his 17th of the season at 4:43 of the third period. Just under five minutes later, Brandon Hagel scored his 21st of the season to get the game tied. It remained that way until the Bruins found a way to beat Fleury one more time in overtime.

It is a little strange that the Hawks are letting Fleury continue to steal them games. If they didn’t have him, they would have a much better chance of landing Shane Wright in the 2022 NHL Draft.

We would also be getting the opportunity to watch a future Hall of Fame goalie play in the playoffs if they sent him to a contender. It will be interesting to see if they make that move before Monday’s trade deadline.

The Bruins beating the Hawks was their second win against them in three games. Last week, David Pastrnak’s late goal gave the B’s a regulation win at the TD Garden over the Blackhawks. To be honest, it isn’t even a little bit surprising.

There were some Blackhawks players that had good games despite the lack of offense. Both Kirby Dach and Seth Jones were outstanding in their quest to help their goalie get the win. For Boston, Taylor Hall, Brad Marchand, Patrice Bergeron were the most impactful forwards. The entire Bruins defense deserves credit for the way that they protected the house.

We won’t see these two teams meet again until next year which is sad because it is always fun to watch. The Hawks are going to try and build for the future at the trade deadline while the Bruins are going to try and add a piece for their postseason run. At a minimum, seeing Fleury play for Chicago has been a treat this season.

Source: Cubs, Suzuki agree to 5-year, $85M dealon March 16, 2022 at 3:54 pm

The Chicago Cubs have agreed to a five-year, $70 million contract with star Japanese outfielder Seiya Suzuki, a source told ESPN, confirming multiple reports.

Suzuki met with the Cubs front office and team chairman Tom Ricketts on Monday night before agreeing to the deal, the source said.

The 27-year-old Suzuki joins the Cubs after playing nine seasons for the Hiroshima Toyo Carp in Nippon Professional Baseball. He hit .319 with 38 homers and 88 RBIs in 2021 and has a .315 career average with 182 homers and 562 RBIs.

Suzuki won the 2019 Central League batting title, is a four-time All-Star and is a three-time Gold Glove winner. He also won Japan’s home run derby in 2019.

He was originally posted by Hiroshima on Nov. 22, but bidding for his services had been paused by the lockout.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

What Lucas Patrick, Nicholas Morrow mean for future of the Chicago BearsRyan Heckmanon March 16, 2022 at 2:00 pm

All of Tuesday, Chicago Bears fans were sitting fairly anxiously as they awaited any news whatsoever.

Although general manager Ryan Poles clearly stated he was going to be patient during free agency, it was still difficult for many fans to make it through nearly two days with seeing the Bears sign just one player in Larry Ogunjobi.

Later Tuesday evening, the Bears finally struck — and did so twice. Poles and the Bears agreed to terms with former Las Vegas Raiders linebacker Nicholas Morrow, and almost immediately after that news, the team also agreed with former Green Bay Packers interior lineman Lucas Patrick.

Both of these players will prove to be excellent signings in the short-term, but how do they project down the line for the Bears?

Both Lucas Patrick and Nicholas Morrow can provide plenty of help in both the short and long-term future of the Chicago Bears.

Let’s start with Morrow, who was the Bears’ second free agent signing this week. It was definitely not expected for Poles to start out with two defensive signings when everyone was focused on the other side of the ball.

But, Poles has continued to stick to his plan and stay patient, looking for the smart signings and not necessarily the splashy ones. Morrow, 26, comes in and will start at one of the linebacker positions next to Roquan Smith, complimenting him well.

He’s a fast player who can drop into coverage, which is something Matt Eberflus has been looking for in future Bears players. At his age, Morrow could stick around for a while. He’s young, which is also another characteristic Eberflus and Poles are looking for.

Poles strikes as a guy who will want to take care of his own in future years, and build as fluid a roster as he can. Morrow could be next to Roquan Smith for quite some time, and that longevity is important when analyzing a rebuilding team.

Now Patrick may be a couple years older than Morrow, at 28, but he is certainly a player to get excited about. His contract will prove to be an immense value looking back on it two years from now.

In 2021, Patrick finished third amongst centers in ESPN’s pass-block win rate. Essentially, the Bears just signed the third-best pass blocking center in all of football at just $4 million per season. That’s an absolute steal by Poles and his team.

Patrick has also been pretty dependable in terms of being healthy and staying on the field. So, what does Patrick’s future projection look like? Obviously, Poles wants to build for the future. If Patrick proves to stay consistent just as he’s been for the past couple of years, he very well could stick around beyond his original deal.

In the short-term, Patrick’s knowledge of Getsy’s offense is going to come in handy. He’ll be a good mind to bounce ideas off of and help the rest of the Bears’ line, and offense as a whole, when learning a new offense. When it comes to learning a new offense, it helps the group overall, to have a player or two come in already knowing what to look for.

Not only does Patrick help in that regard, but he’ll provide immediate protection for the Bears’ franchise quarterback in Justin Fields. Being so prolific in pass blocking, Patrick’s coming to Chicago means that Fields will have at least one lineman he can trust to keep him upright. That’s what many Bears fans have been concerned about, of course, and Patrick will keep our quarterback clean, that’s for sure.

Patrick’s ability to play both guard and center also give this offense some versatility up front — an invaluable trait to have.

Both of these players were highly underrated going into free agency and come to Chicago as a couple of calculated, patient decisions by Poles.

Former Cubs OF Kyle Schwarber has a new MLB team againVincent Pariseon March 16, 2022 at 2:30 pm

The Chicago Cubs made a big splash on Wednesday morning. They added Seiya Suzuki out of Japan to come to North America and try and continue being elite at the MLB level. Unfortunately, it came less than 12 hours after Anthony Rizzo signed with the Yankees and right before the Philadelphia Phillies signed Kyle Schwarber.

There were rumors that the Cubs were trying to pursue Schwarber after he was amazing in 2021. The Cubs let him go after 2022 in favor of Joc Pederson which was a terrible move. He was clearly motivated by the Cubs not wanting him back so he came out and dominated.

They regretted it hard when he hit .266/.374/.554 for an OPS of .928. He also hit 32 home runs and had 71 RBIs. All of this equated to a 3.2 WAR for a year split between the Washington Nationals and Boston Red Sox. With Boston, he went all the way to the ALCS.

Now, he is going to be with the Phillies in a four-year deal with an average annual value of around 20 million per year. It is a great deal for both sides as they look to have some success together in the future.

Kyle Schwarber headed to the Philadelphia Phillies on a four-year contract.

The Phillies have underachieved over the past few years. They had an MVP-winning Bryce Harper, a Cy Young runner up in Zack Wheeler, and multiple other stars at the top of their game and they still couldn’t even make the Wild Card Game.

Now, adding Schwarber might be the slugger that they need. As good as Harper was in 2021 (he literally won the MVP), he wasn’t able to produce runs like he should have been able to with this team. Most of his home runs were solo shots and his RBI total only reached 84.

Schwarber should be able to help with that. If he plays like he was able to last year, this is a great move for the Phillies. He brings a lot to the table and there are things there that have nothing to do with the actual game on the field.

For one, based on his cup of coffee with the Red Sox, people seem to really like him. He also now has deep postseason experience with multiple MLB franchises (Cubs, Red Sox). That is something that the Phillies need as most of their team has never made a deep run or even made the playoffs at all. Even though he isn’t returning to the Cubs, he deserves this opportunity.
