Tigers reach 2-year deal with lefty reliever Chafinon March 17, 2022 at 8:44 pm

LAKELAND, Fla. — The Detroit Tigers on Thursday finalized a two-year, $13 million deal for left-hander Andrew Chafin, one of the top relief pitchers on the free-agent market.

Chafin, 31, gets a $1 million signing bonus, $5.5 million this season and $6.5 million in 2023.

He had a 1.83 ERA with a career-high five saves and 64 strikeouts in 71 games in 2021, splitting the season with the Chicago Cubs and Oakland Athletics. His ERA ranked No. 5 in the majors among relievers and he ranked among baseball’s leaders in opponents’ on-base and slugging percentage and opponents’ slugging percentage.

Chafin has appeared in 311 games since 2017, trailing only Oakland’s Yusmeiro Petit total of 318 games. He was selected by Arizona as a supplemental first-round selection with the 43rd overall pick in the 2011 amateur draft. Chafin has a 3.30 ERA over eight seasons with 355 career strikeouts.

The newly acquired reliever joins a new-look team, which includes shortstop Javier Baez and left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez, who will start Friday’s exhibition opener and perhaps Detroit’s opener against the Chicago White Sox on April 8.

Source: Cubs sign versatile IF Villar to $6M dealon March 17, 2022 at 10:40 pm

The Chicago Cubs have added another veteran infielder, agreeing with Jonathan Villar on a one-year deal worth $6 million, a source confirmed to ESPN.

The switch-hitting Villar will provide defensive versatility plus a combination of power and speed for the new-look Cubs. The 10-year veteran played 142 games with the New York Mets last season, batting .249 with 18 home runs and 14 stolen bases.

FanSided first reported Thursday on Villar’s deal, which is pending a physical.

Villar has significant experience at second base, shortstop and third base and could serve in a utility role for the Cubs, who signed veteran shortstop Andrelton Simmons to a one-year deal earlier this week.

Chicago also made a big splash in free agency Wednesday with the signing of Japanese star outfielder Seiya Suzuki to a five-year, $85 million contract.

Villar, 30, is a .258 career hitter with 98 homers and 232 stolen bases in parts of nine seasons with the Mets, Marlins, Blue Jays, Brewers, Orioles and Astros.

The Cubs made a series of other moves Thursday, agreeing to contracts with pitchers Mychal Givens, Daniel Norris and Robert Gsellman.

Givens has closing experience, and the Cubs need somebody in the ninth inning role. He had eight saves for the Cincinnati Reds last season after he was traded by the Colorado Rockies in July.

The right-hander agreed to a one-year, $5 million deal with Chicago that could reach $6.25 million with bonuses, a source told ESPN’s Jesse Rogers.

Right-hander Chris Martin also finalized his one-year deal with Chicago on Thursday, and left-hander Brad Wieck was placed on the 60-day injured list with a left elbow strain.

Pistons’ Bey has NBA’s 8th 50-pt. game in Marchon March 18, 2022 at 3:10 am

ORLANDO, Fla. — Saddiq Bey went off for a career-high 51 points in the Detroit Pistons134-120 win over the Orlando Magic on Thursday night, continuing what has already been a torrid month of individual scoring in the NBA.

Bey’s performance marked the league’s eighth 50-point game in March, the most in one calendar month over the past 50 seasons, according to ESPN Stats & Information research. The last month with more was December 1962, when there were nine 50-point games.

Overall, there have been 17 50-point games this season, and Bey is the 13th player to pull the feat, matching the most in a season in NBA history. At 22, he is the youngest player with a 50-point game in Pistons history, according to ESPN Stats & Info.

Two nights after being torched for 16 points in the first quarter by Brooklyn’s Kyrie Irving on his way to a 60-point game, the Magic gave up 21 points in the first quarter to Bey.

Bey, whose previous career-high was 34, finished the first half in spectacular fashion, scoring five points in less than five seconds. He hit a 20-footer while falling out of bounds with 8.8 seconds left, came up with a back-court steal and made a 3-pointer with 3.9 seconds left, leaving the Pistons with a 73-62 lead.

The Magic scored the first nine points of the game, but that lead was quickly erased by Bey. The Pistons moved ahead for keeps on a dunk by Isaiah Stewart that broke a 50-50 tie midway through the second quarter.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Chicago Bears snag former Green Bay Packers free agent wide receiverRyan Heckmanon March 17, 2022 at 10:34 pm

As NFL free agency rolls on, the Chicago Bears have continued to stay patient and allow the signings come to them.

Other teams have spent big money and made huge moves, but general manager Ryan Poles has stuck to his plan. Poles refuses to overpay for anybody in his first year with the Bears, thus the team had only signed three outside free agents until Friday afternoon.

The Bears brought in former Cincinnati Bengals defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi, former Las Vegas Raiders linebacker Nicholas Morrow and former Green Bay Packers offensive lineman Lucas Patrick.

Friday afternoon, the Bears brought in yet another former Packer. This time, it was wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown.

Chicago Bears expected to sign Equanimeous St. Brown, per a league source

— Aaron Wilson (@AaronWilson_NFL) March 17, 2022

Equanimeous St. Brown is yet another former Packer to join the Chicago Bears via free agency.

New Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy came from Green Bay, of course, as their former quarterbacks coach. Coming to Chicago, where the Bears’ offense needs plenty of upgrades, there was a feeling that Getsy could bring some players with him.

St. Brown should be a familiar name to Bears fans, as he played his college ball close by at Notre Dame. He was a sixth-round pick back in 2018 by the Packers, but hasn’t been used much in his four years there.

The former Irish star stands a towering 6-foot-5 and provides a big-bodied target for quarterback Justin Fields, should he end up making the roster.

At the moment, St. Brown seems to be nothing more than a depth signing. He will likely end up as the fourth or fifth wideout on the depth chart, depending on how the rest of free agency and the 2022 NFL Draft shake out.

For Poles’ fourth free agent signing, St. Brown isn’t a flashy one. But, he could provide to be an effective one. Don’t forget, St. Brown has familiarity with the offensive ideas that Getsy will run in Chicago.

He’s also coming to his second NFL team after likely feeling as though he wasn’t able to prove what he could do with the Packers. As someone who now has his second chance in the NFL to get himself on the field and make an impact, St. Brown should be motivated.

Over his time in Green Bay, St. Brown collected 37 receptions for 543 yards and one touchdown. His best season at Notre Dame came in 2016 when he caught 58 passes for 961 yards and nine touchdowns. He finished that year with 16.6 yards per reception.

As a possible outside threat, St. Brown is well-worth a flier, especially in a year where Poles is going to be cautious and awaiting what could be a big 2023 offseason.

Former Chicago Bears WR Allen Robinson got massively overpaidRyan Heckmanon March 17, 2022 at 9:30 pm

When he signed with the Chicago Bears back in 2018, wide receiver Allen Robinson was coming off an ACL tear but still proved to become an integral part of the offense in his first year.

By his second and third year with the team, Robinson topped the 1,000-yard mark twice. But, when it came to his future beyond Year 3, Robinson’s relationship with the Bears took a turn for the worse — along with everything else.

Former general manager Ryan Pace didn’t do a very good job establishing trust between Robinson and the Bears, thus creating a lot of friction. When the Bears finally decided to franchise tag Robinson, his interest in playing for the organization was long gone.

Now, Robinson has a new home, joining his third pro team and current world champs, the Los Angeles Rams.

The #Rams are signing WR Allen Robinson to a three-year, $46.5 million deal that includes $30.7M fully guaranteed, per sources.

The deal was negotiated by agents @bparker of @vaynersports and Roosevelt Barnes. https://t.co/sBlfz6iTEb

— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) March 17, 2022

Based on his effort last year with the Chicago Bears, Allen Robinson was massively overpaid by the Los Angeles Rams.

Forget the conspiracy that Matt Nagy and the Bears “schemed” him out of the offense. Once he didn’t get the long-term deal that he wanted, Robinson put forth some of the worst effort we have seen from a Bears receiver — and that is saying a lot.

The way he completely quit on his team in 2021 was flat out embarrassing. Go back and watch the film, and you’ll see a guy who jogged through a bunch of his routes and gave up blocking before the play was even over. A perfect example of the latter was on a long Justin Fields run against the Green Bay Packers last year, where Robinson ran out of bounds instead of making a block that would’ve resulted in a Fields’ touchdown.

The hilarious aspect of this deal is, Robinson made more on the franchise tag last year and reportedly wanted around the same number annually — around $18 million. Now, he gets an average of $15 million per year.

But, for a guy who showed little energy on the field in 2021, Robinson was far overpaid.

Let’s be real here. Sure, he “hasn’t had a quarterback” for a large part of his career. But, this is a guy who has only made one Pro Bowl, zero All Pro teams and has only had one season with double-digit touchdowns — and that came all the way back in 2015.

The Rams are already a great organization, so this was an easy decision for Robinson. Now, he won’t be the number one option in L.A. as he shares targets with Cooper Kupp, Robert Woods and Van Jefferson.

Who knows, maybe the Rams bring back Odell Beckham Jr. on a friendly contract that essentially means they all want to come back and win another ring together. That would be scary.

But, when it comes to Robinson, this is a massive overpay. Good for him — he finally got a quarterback. But, the Rams got taken for a ride on this deal.

Former Bears star Allen Robinson has a new NFL homeVincent Pariseon March 17, 2022 at 8:34 pm

The Chicago Bears have done almost nothing right over the last few years. One of the many mistakes that they have made is the way that they handled Allen Robinson. For a lot of his Bears’ tenure, he was one of the best wide receivers in the National Football League.

In his final year with the club, however, he was badly mistreated. Matt Nagy did not call enough plays that targeted him or got him involved enough. It also seems like Robinson himself believed like it was being done on purpose which tells you how toxic things actually were.

Now, Robinson has a new NFL home as he has signed a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Rams. Of course, he is going to the team that is now the defending Super Bowl champions. He will be there to help them defend their title and pursue a second consecutive one.

There are a lot of very good players there in Los Angeles that will help Robinson get the most out of his game. The most important is quarterback Matthew Stafford. The former Detroit Lions quarterback will now be throwing passes to the now-former Chicago Bears receiver.

Allen Robinson is going to the Los Angeles Rams on a three-year deal.

It should honestly be a lot of fun seeing Robinson play for the Rams. The Bears are probably going to be a bottom-tier team in 2022 so he has no business playing on a team like this. For the first time in his NFL career, Robinson will have an elite quarterback helping him create offense.

Another intriguing thing about this move is the fact that he will line up opposite Cooper Kupp who was the best receiver in the NFL last season. With Robinson not having to be “the guy”, he might thrive against the opponent’s second-best coverage.

He was always getting the opposition’s best and now that will change. It is a great career move for him as he will be there for the next three seasons. That about fits the window that the Rams have before things really start to fall off for them.

They don’t have a lot of first-round picks for a while so this is a great move for them. It is fair to root for him because it will make Matt Nagy look bad if he succeeds on a team that actually knows what they are doing. This is going to be fun to see.

What you need to know for Thursday night’s NBA slate

By Jim McCormick and Kyle Soppe

Bag Man: Jerami Grant and Hamidou Diallo are listed as out in Orlando this evening. When Grant is off the floor, Marvin Bagley III (45% available) sees his usage spike to 26% and he’s produced a whopping 13.3 more DraftKings points per 36 minutes. For those seeking a DFS building block or target for prop plays, Bagley faces an Orlando frontcourt that has ceded 48.3 DraftKings PPG to power forwards, the second-highest rate in the league.

Suggs Sitting: Orlando won’t have rookie guard Jalen Suggs in the lineup, so Markelle Fultz (83% available) should be a popular name to consider given his elite assist percentage. However, Fultz could also be limited to around 20 minutes even with Suggs’ absence as the Magic continue to use him conservatively after his ACL injury last season. An alternative might be R.J. Hampton (99% available), who has flashed some solid playmaking at times and should near or top 30 minutes of run time against Detroit.

Cade Watch: Cade Cunningham is listed as questionable for tonight’s game, so it’s prudent to consider Cory Joseph (97% available) if the Cunningham sits. Joseph won’t deliver a monster line, but his usage rate and fantasy production have both risen significantly when Cunningham has been off the court this season.

Trending Trendon: The Trail Blazers are running out a young and unproven roster most nights. If you have the space on your roster during this light one-game slate, acquire Trendon Watford (84% available) and/or Drew Eubanks (96%). Watford has become a fun source of passing production at the power forward spot, while Eubanks has averaged a double-double over the past week.

Game of the Night

Line: Magic (-4.5)
Moneyline: Magic (-177), Pistons (+143)
Total: 219 points
BPI Score Projection: Magic win: 109-106
BPI Win%: Magic (60.9%)

Key players ruled out: Jerami Grant, Hamidou Diallo, Jalen Suggs

Questionable: Cade Cunningham (illness), Wendell Carter Jr.

Notable: The Pistons are riding a 12-game unbeaten streak ATS and have seen six of their past seven games go under the total.

Best bet: Pistons 1H (+1.5). In a battle of two of the league’s worst teams with star players our or questionable, this game is a tossup. Suggs is ruled out and Carter Jr, Cunningham, and more are listed as questionable. This game could be sloppy so I am looking to back a trend here. Detroit is 10-0 ATS in the first half in the last 10 games overall and 8-2 in their last 10 games away from home. The Pistons are a covering machine. They have covered this number in two of the three matchups against Orlando and cashed this in the previous matchup. I would be more confident in this pick if Cunningham’s status wasn’t up in the air, but all things considered in a matchup that could go either way… ride the hot trends. — Erin Dolan

Best bet: Pistons +4.5. The Pistons have been money for weeks now, because oddsmakers don’t seem to have caught up to the way they’ve played since the All-Star Break. The question is health, particularly that of Cunningham. With Grant out, the Pistons will need Cunningham to compete. If he plays, they have the frontcourt depth to keep this game close even without Grant. — Andre Snellings

Best bet: Franz Wagner over 23.5 points + assists + rebounds. This season, Wagner has been one of the few bright spots for the Magic. In 69 games this season, the rookie has averaged 15.7 PPG, 4.6 RPG, and 2.9 APG. Wagner faces a Pistons team that has allowed small forwards to average 23.6 PPG, 8.1 RPG, and 4.0 APG. — Eric Moody

Fantasy Streamer: Markelle Fultz (84.5% available). Fultz was quiet in Tuesday’s blowout loss to the Nets, but was one of the best players on the court in his previous two outings despite his minutes limitation. With Suggs out, Fultz should have the opportunity to produce well in limited minutes on Thursday. — Snellings

With Cade Cunningham questionable, Isaiah Livers could be a quality fantasy streaming option for a limited NBA slate on Thursday night. Michael Reaves/Getty Images

Fantasy streamer: Isaiah Livers (98.4% available). Livers is an intriguing streamer for those in deeper formats and those looking for DFS value. Livers has missed a lot of time due to a foot injury, but is now healthy and earning minutes with the Pistons. A bad defensive team, the Magic rank 22nd in points allowed per 100 possessions. — Moody

Chicago Cubs bolster middle infield with Jonathan Villar signingRyan Sikeson March 17, 2022 at 5:40 pm

The Chicago Cubs now have a crowded middle infield after signing Jonathan Villar, and they are probably out on Carlos Correa.

The Chicago Cubs added depth to their middle infield on Thursday, coming to terms with former Milwaukee Brewer Jonathan Villar.

The 30-year-old spent last season with the New York Mets, posting a .249/.322/.416 slash line with 18 home runs and 42 RBIs to go along with 14 stolen bases. Villar saw a bounceback season in 2021 after posting not-so-great numbers split between the Marlins and Blue Jays in the COVID-shortened 2020 season.

He joins an already crowded infield, with Nico Hoerner, Nick Madrigal, and Andrelton Simmons all vying for playing time at second base and shortstop. As a switch-hitter, Villar gives the Cubs a much-needed left-handed option against right-handed pitchers.

Throughout his career, Villar has good numbers against righties, owning a .255/.329/.397 slash line. He also gives the Cubs some flexibility in terms of where he can slot into the lineup, given that he’s played at least 330 games at both second and shortstop. He’s also played nearly 150 games at third base.

Patrick Wisdom figures to be the starting third baseman, but Villar provides good depth at the position, with David Bote starting the year on the injured list.

Villar led the league with 62 stolen bases during the 2016 season with the Brewers. While he swiped just 14 bases in 2021, he gives the Cubs some nice speed on the basepaths. He even surprised some of his Mets teammates last year with his sneaky speed.

“They’ve never seen something like that,” Villard said. “One of the guys, he told me, ‘Are you crazy?’ I said, ‘I don’t care.’ I’m not scared to play baseball.”

Fangraphs projects Villar to post a .245/.313/.389 (96 wRC+) slash line with 17 home runs and 51 RBIs, similar to his production last year.

With four players for two positions, the Chicago Cubs are now probably out of the Carlos Correa sweepstakes.

Reloading might beat rebuilding for the Chicago BlackhawksTim Healeyon March 17, 2022 at 11:00 am

The Chicago Blackhawks are going nowhere this year so the question is should they rebuild or reload? Maybe they can do both. Hear me out, the Hawks can fix the roster without a huge asset dump. It will certainly be tricky and not easy for new GM Kyle Davidson to do but it is possible.

To be sure, there are some players who most certainly need to be moved if the Hawks are to improve. I like Dominik Kubalik but he’s a restricted free agent. He could bring back some assets in a trade. So, too, could Caleb Jones. I’m less certain about Philipp Kurashev.

Calvin de Haan and Erik Gustafsson are also unrestricted free agents who could bring back a return.

There are other free agents, both restricted and unrestricted, whose names are coming up in rumors. The most obvious one is goalie Marc-Andre Fleury. The veteran is playing at a high level and a Cup contender could take a flyer on him.

The Hawks would get a boatload of assets in return but he has a 10-team no-trade clause and rumor has it he doesn’t want to be away from his family for a Cup run that could last two months.

Personally, I think the aging goalie should be moved. The Hawks need the assets and he’s unlikely to be the starting netminder for Chicago (if he stays) for more than another year or two.

As a fan, I’d prefer he stay, especially since the Hawks haven’t found a long-term solution in the net since Corey Crawford left but the logical part of my brain suggests moving him. Especially considering that I am about to argue for two key pieces to stay. One can’t have it all.

The Chicago Blackhawks could either rebuild or retool their roster before next year.

That brings us to Brandon Hagel and more importantly Dylan Strome. I’ve heard arguments for trading both. Strome is an RFA but I think the Hawks need to build around them.

They should move Kubalik, Fleury, de Haan, Caleb Jones, and any other player who brings a decent return. Build around Hagel, Strome, Connor Murphy, Alex DeBrincat, Kirby Dach, Seth Jones, and a still-impactful Patrick Kane (we’ll discuss Jonathan Toews in a second).

I get that this approach might run into two cold, hard realities. Obviously, guys like Strome could fetch assets and it will be easier to rebuild with more assets. It would either be in the form of prospects or draft picks than to try to hold on to certain guys and build around them.

Second, the limits of the salary cap could make it hard to resign UFAs and RFAs so they might as well trade them for assets.

I know how the business side works and how a team that’s mired in mediocrity the way the Hawks are is usually best served by blowing it all up and rebuilding from the ground up.

But I see potential in this team and if Davidson can perform some creative maneuvering, I can see this team being back in contention if the roster is built around the players I mentioned, if the defense is rebuilt, and a long-term netminder is found (it could be someone like Drew Commesso).

I could, of course, be wrong. It may make more sense for Davidson to just move as many guys as he can – even beloved stars like Kane and Toews – to get as many assets as possible even if it means another three to five years of doldrums before the Hawks are competitive again.

Davidson is in a tough spot because some of previous GM Stan Bowman’s moves didn’t work out and that means he has work to do.

This brings us to Jonathan Toews. Personally, I want to see him and Kane retire as Blackhawks, having spent their entire career here. But Toews has been a shell of himself due to health issues. I’ve seen flashes of the old Toews, though.

That makes me wonder, can the Hawks convince another team that Toews has gas left in the tank and fetch some assets for him? Should they? Or should they allow Toews time to get his game back, assuming he still has some fuel left in the tank? Can he be a mentor to younger players, regardless of his level of play?

We could see a whole new-look Hawks team come Tuesday. My prediction is that Kane and Toews will remain Hawks, at least until the offseason. I suspect Kubalik, de Haan, and several others will wearing different sweaters. For Fleury, Strome, and Hagel, I honestly cannot tell.

Whatever the Hawks do, I hope they manage to find a way to build around their best current players while also fetching assets. It’s unlikely because fast turnarounds like that are difficult but you never know. It beats waiting out a rebuild.
