New Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles’ work to reshape the roster has been kicked up a notch.

That is because teams are currently negotiating with unrestricted free agents. Official contracts cannot be signed until the start of the new NFL’s league year on March 16th.

Poles heads into the offseason with a good amount of cap space to spend according to Overthecap.com.

He will need to spend every penny of that space wisely to remake a team coming off a 22-27 stretch over the past three seasons. A stretch that led to the firing of Ryan Pace as general manager and Matt Nagy as head coach.

Poles would not be here if the Chicago Bears did not go 6-11 last season with a flawed and aging roster.

Poles has already made some bold moves ahead of free agency starting. He traded away Khalil Mack. He has released Tarik Cohen and Eddie Goldman. There are plans to release Danny Trevathan.

Now he must use his available methods to upgrade the roster and get the Chicago Bears pointed in the right direction.

Those options are…

Tier one free agents: The big-name, star players or young unrestricted free agents with big potential that will sign within the first weekTier two and three free agents: NFL veterans who typically sign smaller deals after the first wave. Also played hoping to bounce back from a disappointing season or injury. Players who may get cut later in the offseason. The NFL draftTradesBears re-sign their own free agents.

Another reason the Chicago Bears roster needs an overhaul is the defense is switching from a 3-4 base defense to a 4-3 base defense under new head coach Matt Eberflus. That means a couple of positions require a different skill set or body type.

Finally, the Chicago Bears had 27 unrestricted free agents when free agency started.

Not everyone will or should be re-signed so some players will have to be replaced.

Poles will have to prioritize his needs and figure out what five methods of filling them are the best way to take.

Andrew McCutchen is coming to the Chicago Cubs’ divisionVincent Pariseon March 15, 2022 at 5:30 pm

The Chicago Cubs are trying to be a good team in 2022. The Cincinnati Reds are selling off their entire team so that they can save some money this year. With the Pittsburgh Pirates in the basement, the Cubs just have to worry about the St. Louis Cardinals and Milwaukee Brewers now.

Outside of the division is a different story with teams like the New York Mets, Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Dodgers, and San Francisco Giants amongst others. For now, they can only worry about their division, however, as that could be the key to having a good year.

One division rival got just a bit better on Monday as Andrew McCutchen is going to the Milwaukee Brewers. This is a big move for them as they add some depth to their outfield in search of another division title. McCutchen is looking to end his career on a good team in the playoffs.

He knows what it takes to play in the NL Central Division as he became a star with the Pittsburgh Pirates. They were actually really good while he was there too so Cubs fans know him well. It will be interesting to see what he can bring to the Brew Crew in 2022.

The Chicago Cubs are going to have Andrew McCutchen in the division again.

In between Pittsburgh and Milwaukee, he made stops with the San Francisco Giants, New York Yankees, and Philadelphia Phillies. He certainly isn’t the player that he was with the Pirates but he can bring a lot to this Brewers team looking to get over the edge.

Milwaukee dominated their way to the postseason in 2021 thanks to one of the best pitching staff in Major League Baseball. Their lack of offense, however, proved to be too much of weakness by the time the playoffs rolled around. Now, they are hoping that McCutchen can be just another solid hitter in their group.

Watching the Cubs and Brewers duke it out this year is going to be so fun. The Cincinnati Reds are selling off all their best players right now so it will come down to those two and the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cubs are probably in a distant third but the extra playoff team gives them a fighting chance. Either way, it is good to be talking baseball.

Patrick Kane would fit in so well on the New York RangersVincent Pariseon March 15, 2022 at 5:00 pm

The rumors online are crazy right now in hockey land. The National Hockey League Trade Deadline is one week away and everyone is gearing up to either better their chances of winning the Stanley Cup or their future. The Chicago Blackhawks fit in the future category.

Right now, the rumors are going wild surrounding Chicago Blackhawks superstar, Patrick Kane. Dave Pagnotta, also known as The Fourth Period, went on the Spittin’ Chiclets Podcast and discussed the possibility of trading Kane with Ryan Whitney and Paul Bissonnette.

He claims that the New York Rangers and Chicago Blackhawks have talked about it which is incredibly interesting to note. He also brought up the Colorado Avalanche but the conversation surrounded the Rangers. That sent Twitter into an uproar.

Of course, Blackhawks fans don’t want to see it because he is the greatest player in team history. There is no doubt that trading him away would make the team significantly worse than it already is but it could lead to them getting better quicker.

The Chicago Blackhawks might actually be smart to move on from Patrick Kane.

The Hawks have a Hall of Famer in his prime playing at a high level to trade away and it would be more than just a rental as of this deadline. Whoever acquired Kane this year (if he were traded) would be getting him this year and all of next year based on his contract. Then it would be up to them to extend him beyond that.

The Blackhawks would land so much in a trade like this. First-round picks in this year’s draft (the Hawks don’t even have their own pick) or next year’s draft would be involved, Alexis Lafreniere could be involved, guys like Kaapo Kakko and K’Andre Miller could be in the mix, and a bunch of other assets that could help the team rebuild.

Ask yourself, are the Blackhawks ever going to win the Stanley Cup with Patrick Kane again? The answer is a hard no so why not rebuild while your best asset is at its highest worth. It would be nice to see this team start to win again no matter what.

As for Kane, he deserves to play in the playoffs. He is one of the 50 greatest NHL players of all time so seeing him in his prime on the biggest stage would be nice. He would be reunited with Artemi Panarin in New York if this trade ever went down which would also be tremendous theatre. Hopefully, regardless of what happens, the Hawks are a better team for it.

Chicago Bears GM Ryan Poles may have a genius free agency strategyRyan Heckmanon March 15, 2022 at 4:30 pm

Historically, the Chicago Bears actually spend a good amount of money early on in free agency. Former general manager Ryan Pace may not have used that money particularly well, per say, but he’s spent it.

So far, in Ryan Poles’ first year as general manager and with his first opportunity at NFL free agency, he’s been pretty laid back.

The only huge signing, as it stands, is defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi — who fits this new 4-3 defense perfectly as the 3-technique. Ogunjobi agreed to a 3-year deal worth $40.5 million, making him the 9th highest-paid defensive tackle in football.

But, while other teams continue to spend, Poles has been cool, calm and collected while allowing his peers to empty their checkbooks. And, when looking at the grand scheme of things, Poles just might be onto something.

Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles could be onto something many fans aren’t thinking about during NFL free agency.

It’s been obvious that Poles is being patient. He’s went on record with his purpose during this week, and that’s to stick to his price point. He will not overpay for a player if their price tag is higher than what he has them valued.

For once, it’s refreshing to hear such transparency. The Bears are going to be set up nicely for free agency in 2023 (roughly $140 million in cap space before 2022 free agency began). But, Poles could be thinking even deeper. NFL insider Benjamin Allbright brings up a great point about Poles’ possible mindset in his first year.

Bears are in the middle of a rip and strip rebuild. They know Rodgers probably has stranglehold on division in Poles’ first year.

Build the trenches and use the rest on short deals that’ll add to the compensatory formula down the line. https://t.co/jGfGtJZ53z

— Benjamin Allbright (@AllbrightNFL) March 13, 2022

As a former lineman himself, Poles is definitely going to build the trenches. That has to be priority on both sides of the football, not just on offense.

But, when it comes to other positions, he very well could stick to those short-term deals that would result in the Bears getting awarded several compensatory picks in the 2023 NFL Draft.

That, folks, is forward thinking.

Poles has understood, from the beginning, that the Bears are not set up to compete in 2022. This roster needed an overhaul, and he needed additional capital, thus he traded Khalil Mack to the Los Angeles Chargers.

Now, it’s clear his vision is set on next year while purposefully adding pieces to the roster in 2022.

If the Bears can get through this offseason adding a couple of long-term pieces, here and there, that’s great. The draft is where Poles will find the majority of those players. But, the 2023 offseason is where he is setting this team up to do some major damage.

Next year, the Bears are slated to have eight draft picks and a whole lot of money to spend in free agency. Let’s say the Bears also end up with two or three comp picks next year — that gives them double-digit picks. We haven’t seen that type of draft haul in Chicago in what seems like forever. The Bears haven’t come away with double-digit picks since 2008.

Fans may be upset that he’s not spending so far this week, but Poles is playing this the right way. Patience and planning are key to building around Justin Fields, going forward, and that’s exactly what Poles is demonstrating.

Fantasy basketball streamers and NBA betting cheat sheet for Tuesdayon March 15, 2022 at 5:38 pm

The ESPN fantasy and betting cheat sheet is your pregame destination for our best intel and data to help you make smart fantasy and wagering decisions. NBA game odds are provided by Caesars Sportsbook, and fantasy advice is based on ESPN 10-team leagues.

Jump ahead: Game of the night | Picks and props | Analytics edge

What you need to know for Tuesday night’s NBA slate

By Jim McCormick and Kyle Soppe

The Pass Man: With Chris Paul continuing to sit and Cam Johnson set to miss a sixth consecutive game, Cam Payne (66% available, $7,700 on DraftKings) again profiles as a great play. He’s racked up either double digit assists or 20 points in six straight games, posting 11 assists and 0 turnovers on Sunday against the Lakers. As long as he is the on ball play-maker in this offense, he’s worth a look in all fantasy and betting markets.

Magical Matchups: Orlando’s path to production on Tuesday starts with the fact Brooklyn has allowed the most DraftKings points to small forwards and the seventh-most to shooting guards over the past seven games. With Jalen Suggs listed as questionable, it’s worth noting Markelle Fultz (86% available) has notched 18 assists in his last 37 minutes of action. Rookie Franz Wagner (37%) is also poised to produce given the friendly matchup metrics. For the Nets, Andre Drummond (52%) should log heavy minutes and help both as a streaming option and rebounding prop candidate. He faces an Orlando team that almost always has a traditional center on the floor.

Missing Morant: Ja Morant is listed as doubtful to play against the Pacers due to back soreness. Morant’s likely absence vaults point guard Tyus Jones (96% available) into a starting role as the Grizzlies’ lead creator. Morant missed a game against the Pelicans back in mid-February, one that saw Jones start and post a season-high 27 points on 17 shots to go with a season-high nine dimes. There’s a lot to like about Jones facing an Indiana team that has allowed 57.1 DraftKings points per game to point guards over the past seven games, the third-highest rate in the league. Dillon Brooks (72%) is also primed for a bigger role with Morant sidelined.

2 Related

Wildcat Week: One of Villanova’s clutch playmakers in their most recent title run was Donte DiVincenzo (63% available), who just earned his first start as a King on Monday and delivered a rich line that included 15 points, 11 combined rebounds and dimes, and three 3-pointers. Roster DiVincenzo ahead of his next start. Sticking with Nova, we find Mikal Bridges in a good spot to hit scoring and rebounding props. After all, Bridges has averaged 19 PPG and 7.3 RPG over the past three games.

Naji In New Orleans: With Brandon Ingram out, Naji Marshall (99% available) is in a quietly strong spot. He’s averaged 15.5 PPG with respectable rebounding and assist rates in his past two games starting in place of Ingram. Marshall paced the Pels in minutes last time out and a nice DFS bargain and redraft streaming candidate to target on a limited four-game slate.

Game of the Night

Line: Suns (-5.5)
Moneyline: Suns (-220), Pelicans (+180)
Total: 225 points
BPI Projected Total: 220.5 points
BPI Win%: Suns (50.3%)

Key players ruled out: CJ McCollum, Brandon Ingram

Notable: The Pelicans have dropped four of their past five ATS and in those five games, the over has cashed four times.

Best bet: Devin Booker over 36.5 points + assists + rebounds. Booker continues to prosper without Chris Paul. He has averaged 26.7 PPG, 8.3 APG, and 4.7 RPG over the past six games and the Pelicans rank 19th in points allowed per 100 possessions. New Orleans also allows one of the highest effective field goal percentages to opponents. — Eric Moody

Best bet: Suns (-5.5). Both teams have major players out for this match-up, and McCollum’s status could play a big part in how the game goes as well. But without two key players, the Suns have still won three of their last four games, including a blowout win over the Eastern Conference leading Miami Heat. They should still have the advantage against a short-handed Pelicans squad. — Andre Snellings

Breaking down the rest of the slate

Line: Grizzlies (-7)
Moneyline: Grizzlies (-290), Pacers (+230)
Total: 232.5 points
BPI Projected Total: 232.5 points
BPI Win%: Grizzlies (68.9%)

Key players ruled out: none

Questionable: Goga Bitadze, Malcolm Brogdon, Chris Duarte, and Lance Stephenson

Doubtful: Ja Morant

Notable: Betting totals is a game of adjustments. From Jan. 31 through Feb. 16, all eight Memphis games coasted over the total. The books adjusted and five of the next six went under. Well, we are in the midst of another adjust, as each of the past the Grizz games have gone over the total.

Tyus Jones of the Memphis Grizzlies is averaging 10.2 points and 3.4 assists over his last five games. Ned Dishman/NBAE via Getty Images

Fantasy Streamer: Tyus Jones.Ja Morant is listed as doubtful for tonight’s game so Jones (97% available) will get the spot-start. He has averaged 16.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 8.0 rebounds per 40 minutes and and the Pacers rank 27th in points allowed per 100 possessions. — Moody

Fantasy streamer: Dillon Brooks. In his first game back from an ankle injury, Brooks (72% available) posted a solid stat line for fantasy managers and should get more playing time tonight. — Moody

Best bet: Tyrese Haliburton over 30.5 points + assists + rebounds. The Pacers have a number of players questionable against the Grizzlies. This positions Haliburton well for a monster game. He’s averaged 19.3 PPG, 4.5 RPG and 10 APG over the past 12 games. — Moody

Line: Nets (-9.5)
Moneyline: Nets (-435), Magic (+330)
Total: 231 points
BPI Projected Total: 221.5 points
BPI Win%: Nets (54.6%)

Key players ruled out: none

Questionable: Jalen Suggs, Gary Harris, Cam Thomas, Seth Curry

Notable: The Nets are unbeaten ATS in their past eight road games and they’ve seen seven of their past nine away from Brooklyn go over the total.

Fantasy Streamer: Markelle Fultz. I know Fultz (86% available) was mentioned in the open, but I’ve still got to speak on him. In the last two games, Fultz has been the best player on the court. He played 18 minutes in an upset win over Karl-Anthony Towns and the Minnesota Timberwolves and played 19 minutes in a 2-point overtime loss to Joel Embiid and the Philadelphia 76ers that Orlando could have won if Fultz wasn’t on a minutes restriction. He’s playing at an extremely high level (11 PPG, 9 APG, 3.5 RPG, 1.5 SPG and 1 3PG in 18.5 MPG in those two contests) and is worthy of a flier. — Snellings

Best bet: Kevin Durant over 41.5 points + assists + rebounds. Since returning from injury, Durant has averaged 32 PPG, 7.0 APG, and 6.6 RPG in his past five games. Over that period, he had a usage rate of 33.2%. The Magic rank 21st with 113 points allowed per 100 possessions and in the 23 career games Durant has played against Orlando, he’s averaged 27.4 PPG, 6.8 RPG, and 4.5 APG. — Moody

Best bet: Wendell Carter Jr. over 27.5 points + rebounds. Carter Jr. has averaged 19 PPG and 12 RPG over his past nine games. He has tallied 31 double-doubles this season and has a good chance of getting another one against the Nets. — Moody

Line: Heat (-13)
Moneyline: Heat (-900), Pistons (+600)
Total: 216.5 points
BPI Projected Total: 207.5 points
BPI Win%: Heat (83.6%)

Key players ruled out: Frank Jackson, Hamidou Diallo, Caleb Martin

Notable: The Pistons are riding an 11-game unbeaten streak ATS (9-0-2) and have seen under tickets cash in five of their past six.

Best bet: Jimmy Butler over 31.5 points + assists + rebounds. With Caleb Martin out, Butler will be utilized more. He has averaged 21.4 PPG, 6.1 RPG and 5.6 APG this season. — Moody

Best bet: Pistons +13. This was a toss-up pick between taking the Pistons and the points and going with the under. I went with the Pistons and points because they’ve been playing so well for such an extended stretch that 13 points is just too many to give them. Their unbeaten ATS stretch was against tough competition including three games against the scorching Celtics (two in Boston), Chicago Bulls, Cleveland Cavaliers, Toronto Raptors and Atlanta Hawks. — Snellings

Chicago Bears have plenty of free agent options on Day 2Ryan Heckmanon March 15, 2022 at 3:33 pm

Day 1 of NFL free agency was a whirlwind. The Chicago Bears sat back, for the most part, and watched as plenty of other teams spent like mad men.

General manager Ryan Poles has specifically said his strategy was to mostly target the second and third wave of free agents, so we will see what he does today and beyond. The only big move he made Monday was to bring in former Cincinnati Bengals defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi — a very nice signing for his first free agent.

It may have seemed like there were far too many players taken off the board on Day 1, but the Bears still have a ton of options at key positions of need.

If Poles wants to stick to his plan, a good amount of these players could be headed to Chicago now that some of the larger contracts have been handed out. Just which players, specifically, are still available in the free agent pool?

Ryan Poles and the Chicago Bears have plenty of free agent options left on Day 2.

We’re not going to look at every single remaining free agent, but here are some that should be highlighted when looking at the Bears’ current needs.

Wide Receiver

JuJu Smith-Schuster

Marquez Valdes-Scantling

Jarvis Landry

Russell Gage

Linebacker

Myles Jack

Anthony Hitchens

Jordan Hicks

Offensive Line

Billy Turner

Daryl Williams

Terron Armstead

Secondary

Darious Williams

Anthony Harris

Not all of these guys fit the youth movement Poles is aiming for, any of those offensive linemen might be worth a 2-year deal to aid in the development of Justin Fields for right now. Poles isn’t going to fix every roster spot this year, and fans must understand that.

The idea is to get younger and faster, for the majority of moves made, and go into 2022 with a great feeling about what the future holds.

Any of the above players would come in and immediately fill a void for the Bears, and most of them would give the Bears a handful of years of high-level play. At the very least, signing a few of these players would allow Poles more flexibility in the 2022 NFL Draft.

We have talked, in length, about Poles’ strategy. He is focused on doing far more damage in 2023 when it comes to shaping this roster. Next year, the Bears will have upwards of $130 million in cap space, depending on what else they do this offseason. Plus, the Bears currently have eight draft picks next year — and that doesn’t include compensatory picks they’ll be set to earn.

Poles has been patient, which is good. But, it may be time to spend a little and fill a couple of holes after the big spenders took center stage on Day 1.

The Blackhawks have a huge home battle with the BruinsVincent Pariseon March 15, 2022 at 3:03 pm

This week started with Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane named to be the NHL’s First Star of the Week. He has been sensational in the recent weeks and that has been noted by the league. He wasn’t good enough, however, last week when they played the Boston Bruins in Boston as they lost late.

Now, the Hawks will welcome the Bruins back to the United Center for the first time in a long time on Tuesday night. This is a battle between one team near the top of the standings and one near the bottom of the standings.

For a while there, the Bruins looked like a lock to be a Wild Card team in the Eastern Conference but their recent hot play has been taking advantage of the slumping Toronto Maple Leafs so this game could shift the standings around a lot.

It is a big game for a lot of people. For one, Nick Foligno is going to play in his 1000th game tonight. He is the first Bruins player to reach that milestone since Patrice Bergeron did it in 2019.

The cool thing about this is that Nick and his father Mike Foligno are only the second father/son duo to each reach this milestone. The first is Chicago Blackhawks legend Bobby Hull and his son Brett Hull. Everyone involved here should be incredibly proud.

There is a lot to know about Chicago Blackhawks vs Boston Bruins on Tuesday.

Lately, Alex DeBrincat and Dylan Strome have joined Kane as the hottest players on the team. Marc-Andre Fleury will be in the net for Chicago as they try to slow down the Bruins as they quest for a division playoff spot.

For Boston, fans might remember Tuukka Rask being in their net for all these years. Well, he called it a career following some injury trouble earlier this year. Jeremy Swayman has been the mainstay for them but the Hawks will see Linus Ullmark tonight.

When it comes to Boston’s skaters, there are some elite ones. Their captain Patrice Bergeron leads a group with Brad Marchand, David Pastrnak, Taylor Hall, Charlie Coyle, Craig Smith, and Erik Haula who have all been great at different points this season.

Brad Marchand only has three goals in his last 18 games which is incredibly rare for him. He is still racking up points but he definitely wants to end that scoring slump. Look for him to come out on fire in this game.

No matter where they are in the standings, Original Six matchups in the NHL are always fun. This is a match loaded with talent on both sides. One team needs the two points desperately and the other just wants to finish the season feeling good going into the summer. Expect to be entertained.

A Laviska Shenault trade could be in mix for the Chicago BearsRyan Heckmanon March 15, 2022 at 2:30 pm

The first day of this year’s NFL free agency frenzy was a wild one, but not necessarily for the Chicago Bears.

It was a day where we saw the Jacksonville Jaguars, specifically, spend like it was going out of style. The Jaguars spent a huge chunk of change on Christian Kirk — a contract which caused the wide receiver market to come to a complete haunt for about 18 hours.

Beyond Kirk’s deal, Jacksonville signed a few other guys but made sure to add a lot of talent around Trevor Lawrence, bringing in Evan Engram and Zay Jones as additional weapons for their second-year quarterback.

Because Jacksonville signed Kirk and Jones, the latest rumor now has the team moving on from young wide receiver Laviska Shenault, who is just entering his third year as a pro after being the 42nd overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

The Chicago Bears played it cool when free agency began, but a trade for Laviska Shenault could certainly help their cause.

Per @ESPNdirocco, the buzz is that Laviska Shenault Jr. is a player the Jaguars may be looking to move.

No surprise after the team agreed to sign Christian Kirk and Zay Jones yesterday.

— Mike Clay (@MikeClayNFL) March 15, 2022

We saw several wide receivers go off the board on Day 1, with a few like JuJu Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling still available. But, a player like Shenault would be an interesting add for the Bears.

Poles was clearly going to be patient and not go above his price point on any player during the first huge day of free agency. He’s focused on building this thing the right way, especially when looking at next year. The Bears might have the most cap space out of any NFL franchise in 2023, so they’ll play the slow game under Poles.

Back to Shenault, who would be an exciting, young weapon that fits exactly what Matt Eberflus wants in his incoming players. Eberflus wants quick, speedy guys who can run — and Shenault fits that profile.

Shenault is a quick-footed offensive weapon who can line up in the back field or the slot. He’s perfect for a young quarterback like Justin Fields, who needs to work on getting the ball out quicker. Shenault does a great job getting himself open in a hurry, and Fields’ development would accelerate because of a player like that.

Over two years, Shenault has absorbed 179 targets and he hasn’t even been the number one guy. He’s just someone an offense can get the ball to quickly, and he’ll look to make moves down field to gain additional yardage.

In his first two seasons as a pro, Shenault has caught 121 passes for 1,219 yards and five touchdowns. Those numbers hardly matter, though, as he’s been in one of the league’s most abysmal offenses. Coming to Chicago, where the Bears are looking to revamp their offense and modernize it a bit, Shenault could end up being a big part of it.

The fact Shenault is still on his rookie deal helps, too, and Poles should absolutely be on the phone with Jacksonville as we speak. Not spending a ton of money while getting a guy who could come in and be a threat as a number three option? Sign us up.

Why the Chicago Bears didn’t overpay for Larry OgunjobiRyan Heckmanon March 15, 2022 at 1:46 pm

As free agency kicked off Monday, the Chicago Bears went a different direction with their first notable signing.

Instead of going after a bigger name at wide receiver or offensive line, general manager Ryan Poles switched it up on us and agreed to terms with former Cincinnati Bengals defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi.

Ogunjobi will come in and play the extremely important 3-technique in Matt Eberflus’ 4-3 defense. For those who need more context, think of Ogunjobi being the Tommie Harris of this defense.

The Bears’ deal with Ogunjobi is a 3-year contract worth $40.5 million which, on the surface, looks like a lot of money. However, looking a little deeper at this deal, one can see that it isn’t all that bad.

The Chicago Bears did not overpay for free agent Larry Ogunjobi, and instead, may have received a value.

Let’s take a quick look at two defensive linemen the Bears will be losing this offseason who may have stepped in to play this 3-technique for Eberflus had they stuck around.

Akiem Hicks is is 32 years old and missed eight games due to injury last season. His most recent cap number was $12 million. Then, there’s Bilal Nichols, whose cap number last year was $2.25 million and he isn’t exactly cut out to play this particular position — neither of these guys are, actually.

Combine those contracts and you get $14.25 against the cap in 2021. Ogunjobi, on the other hand, is just 27 years old and coming off a career year. He is in the midst of his prime and should be at his very best over the next three seasons.

Ogunjobi’s contract pays him an average of $13.5 million per season — and that’s not even his concrete cap number. We’ll have to wait for the details to come later on, but his cap number could be even lower due to bonus configuration.

The Bears got the perfect player to play this position and are paying less than they would have been paying Hicks and Nichols. To snag a defensive tackle entering his prime, for less money than two guys who weren’t cut out for this position, is a huge win for Poles.

They also signed a player who will be healthy and available. Ogunjobi has only missed one game in each of the past three seasons.

Total pressures in 2021 per @pff

Larry Ogunjobi 41

Bilal Nichols 31
Akiem Hicks 15
Eddie Goldman 8

Total run stops

Ogunjobi 20

Nichols 16
Hicks 11
Goldman 8

— Bear Goggles On (@BearGogglesOn) March 14, 2022

To get down to specifics as to Ogunjobi’s performance, check out our friends at BearGogglesOn in the above tweet. The numbers speak for themselves.

Ogunjobi is phenomenal in both the run and pass game. He’s quick enough to get into the back field in a hurry, but also strong enough to hold down the run game. Last season, Ogunjobi tallied 7.0 sacks and 12 tackles for a loss. He also came up with 16 quarterback hits and nine quarterback hurries.

At first glance, the Ogunjobi contract seems large. After all, he’s currently the 9th highest-paid defensive tackle in football. So, it is a bigger contract. But, it’s completely justifiable and makes perfect sense as to why Poles made it happen.

The Bears got an integral part to this new defensive scheme, who is an ascending player, all while replacing two players who couldn’t get the job done in this particular position. An overpay? Absolutely not.

NFL free agency is off to a wild start, with some huge contracts being handed out and a handful of rosters going all-in on a Super Bowl run. The Chicago Bears are not one of those teams.

However, that was to be expected under first-year general manager Ryan Poles. We’ve learned, by now, that Poles was never going to make 2022 free agency a big period for the Bears.

He’s been more adamant that the Bears will be patient, waiting to add value through the second wave, while also sorting through his current roster, still.

On the first day of legal tampering, though, Poles did make a splash with his very first signing as general manager. The Bears agreed to terms with former Cincinnati Bengals defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi, who will come in as the team’s starting 3-technique in Matt Eberflus’ 4-3 defense.

By signing Larry Ogunjobi, Ryan Poles and the Chicago Bears went against the grain of the majority’s expectations.

A defensive tackle was not the expected first signing by the Bears, no matter who you asked. Most would have assumed Poles to go hard after some offensive linemen, maybe a cornerback, and of course a wide receiver.

Instead, we saw several players at those positions head elsewhere within the first few hours. The Bears, meanwhile, signed Ogunjobi to a 3-year deal worth $40.5 million — a hefty chunk of change, making him the 9th highest-paid defensive tackle in the league.

While the majority assumed Poles would start filling other holes, he went the other way and stuck to his guns. Several rumors and whispers suggest that Poles has been sticking to his price limit on many free agents and refusing to overpay.

Ogunjobi, though, was worth paying for. That all-important 3-technique is a key position in Eberflus’ defense, and it had to be filled after the team allowed Eddie Goldman and Akiem Hicks to go free. Think of Ogunjobi being Eberflus’ version of a young Tommie Harris.

Larry Ogunjobi generated 39 QB pressures aligned as an interior DL in 2021, tied with Cameron Heyward for the 6th-most in the NFL.

For those unfamiliar, Ogunjobi is still just 27 years old and is coming off a career year. As an interior lineman, Ogunjobi represents the polar opposite of what Goldman could do. You’re looking at a strong, athletic interior lineman who can rush the passer and wreak havoc in back fields.

As Mark Potash of the Chicago Sun-Times pointed out via his Twitter, the Bengals’ run defense improved from 29th to fifth last year in yards per game and from 31st to 13th in yards per attempt. Of course, Trey Hendrickson had a hand in this, too. But, between the two of them, this Cincy defense took off.

Ogunjobi being the first Bears free agent deal means that Poles doesn’t care about the national narrative or their opinion; how they would have done things. Very few people pegged Poles for going after a higher-priced defensive tackle — but he did it, because he believes in the importance of that position.

We will see what the next deal or two look like, but from this one, we can gather that Poles will continue to be patient and stand firm in finding his guys at his price.
