The Robb Elementary School massacre in Uvalde, Texas is a double win for Republicans

The Robb Elementary School massacre in Uvalde, Texas is a double win for Republicans

If you found the title of this piece cringeworthy, you’re not alone. It is indeed, cringeworthy, as well as disturbing and true. For Republicans, it’s all about political gain PERIOD

Many Republicans, including Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy spoke up after the January 6, 2021 insurrection, opining that Donnie Trump was responsible and should be punished. By the end of the week, they were all aboard the It Was BLM, It Was Antifa, It Never Happened Train.

At first Republicans spent endless hours bending themselves into pretzels to avoid alienating the rabid Trump cult. Now they say things out loud that were once only said behind closed doors, all vying for the Trumpier than Trump title.

For Republicans, staying in line is a distraction, but a necessity nonetheless. Number one on their To Do list though, remains protecting and growing gun sales.

Events like the Robb Elementary School Massacre actually stimulate gun purchases across the country, so trying to stop them is actually counterproductive to the Republican agenda.

There are many ways to stimulate gun sales and stirring up motivating emotions like fear and hatred are at the top of that list. The White power movement certainly plays into that, but Right wing media like Rush Limbaugh, TucKKKer Carlson, Alex Jones and Sean Hannity have been casting Liberals as the Right’s mortal enemies for years.

We all blame Donnie Trump for the encroaching schism in America, but he is just a lightning rod. Trump is a fraud, a cheat and a charlatan who has spent his entire life perfecting the art of appealing to the worst in all of us.

It’s not coincidental that gun sales in America surged in 2015 to their highest level ever, with background checks increasing by 10% in just one year.

In 2021 5.4 million Americans bought 20 million guns.

There’s another insidious benefit to the easy access of guns in America and we only need to look as far as the Indiana-Illinois border, where guns flow freely and unchecked onto the streets of Chicago. Every bullet fired in Chicago is ammunition for Republicans to use against Democrats.

The party that is breaking its back to restrict voting and steal elections has no incentive whatsoever to stop the gun violence that seems to be consuming urban America.

Republicans have turned into disaster cheerleaders, welcoming any catastrophe that occurs during a Democratic administration or that can be blamed on Democrats.

In Texas, you can make abortion inaccessible, ban books and end free elections overnight, but now is never the time to talk about any kind of sensible gun laws.

Governor Abbott, scheduled to speak at a National Rifle Association tomorrow night has recently signed 22 (TWENTY TWO!) new laws making it easier to carry a gun, lowering the age to buy a gun and opening up public areas to pistol packing mamas.

No one wants to stop mass shootings in Texas. Or in the Republican Party, it seems.

AAA

Iowa SUSP – T8 – Tied 4-4

Game Recap

I’ll cover the game more in depth when they complete it today, but it’s worth noting Robel García homered once again, his 12th already on the season. Caleb Kilian was the starter. He didn’t pitch great as his control faltered in the 4th and he began giving up some hard contact, but what should be of interest is that the Cubs will require an extra starter for their doubleheader next Monday and then again for a doubleheader next Saturday. Both of those outings line up with Kilian’s turn in the rotation.

It isn’t a guarantee we will see him make those starts, or even one of them, but the Cubs have to being weighing the possibility of making a 40-man roster move in order to give Kilian a shot.

The other possibility is the Cubs simply move Keegan Thompson back into the rotation to take those two turns, but it could depend on whether they need innings out of him from the pen this weekend.

AA

Tennessee PPD

High-A

Great Lakes 4, South Bend 3

Game Recap

Jordan Wicks flew through five innings in Wade Miley-like fashion. He was efficient with his 70 pitches and wasted no time on the mound between offerings. It is likely he makes his way to Tennessee in the next wave of promotions. His breaking stuff continues to improve and if he can consistently keep his velo above 93 in the coming years he should prove very difficult to hit considering his good control and plus changeup.

He did take the loss despite only allowing one run through five innings though as the South Bend bats were very quiet until a rally in the bottom of the 9th. Down four runs entering the frame, Yohendrick Piñango doubled in a run and then Caleb Knight hit a two-out, two-run shot to bring the Cubs within a run. The comeback attempt would end with the following batter however.

Top Performers

Jordan Wicks: 5 IP, 4 H, R, 0 BB, 3 K (L, 0-1, 3.55)Caleb Knight: 2-3, HR (1), R, 2 RBI (.211)Yohendrick Piñango: 1-4, 2B, R, RBI (.263)Luis Verdugo: 1-3 (.227)

Low-A

Myrtle Beach 8, Augusta 0

Game Recap

Make it 10 straight wins for the Pelicans.

The big star was Kevin Alcantara, who doubled home three runs in the 3rd, smashed a two-run homer in the 5th, and then drove in a sixth run on a ground out in the 7th.

He did have to share some of the spotlight with the pitching though. Luis Devers continues to get the job done. The 22 year old is just super steady, consistently getting guys from the DSL to AZL and now in Low-A this season. He isn’t a high ceiling prospect but he has a starter’s frame and solid command his repertoire. I don’t easily see him making a big jump in velo from his current low-90s, but it is difficult to gauge such things anymore. He definitely still has room on his frame to fill out some.

Devers was followed by three relievers who maintained the shutout over the final four innings.

Top Performers

Kevin Alcantara: 3-5, 2B, HR (5), R, 6 RBI (.248)James Triantos: 2-4, 2 R, BB (.307)Pete Crow-Armstrong: 2-5, 3 R, RBI, 2 SB (11, 12) (.363)Ezequiel Pagan: 2-4, 2 R, SB (4) (.227)Kevin Made: 1-4, RBI, SF (.323)Luis Devers: 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 7 K (W, 4-3, 2.62)Chase Watkins: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, BB, 3 K (4.50)Frankie Scalzo Jr.: IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, K (9.00)Adam Laskey: IP, H, 0 R, 0 BB, K (0.00)

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

And this was before Alcantara, Triantos, Crow-Armstrong, and Made added to their numbers yesterday:

And let’s not forget the 20-year old OFs in Myrtle Beach and South Bend

Pete Crow-Armstrong: 362/455/567 (182 wRC+)
Yohendrick Piñango: 264/326/450 (119 wRC+)
Owen Caissie (in May): 333/394/567 (170 wRC+)

Why Chicago Bears QB Justin Fields will improve in 2022, despite doubtsTodd Welteron May 26, 2022 at 1:00 pm

Use your (arrows) to browse

The Chicago Bears offseason has yet to yield quarterbacks Justin Fields dynamic playmakers on offense. Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles allowed Allen Robinson to leave the team in free agency. Poles has added receivers Bryon Pringle, David Moore, and Equanimeous St. Brown through free agency.

None of those players project to be any better than a number three wide receiver.

In the draft, Poles took 25-year-old rookie Velus Jones Jr. He could be the next Deebo Samuel or the next failed gadget player the Chicago Bears have brought in.

So far, Poles has addressed remaking the offensive line by signing Lucas Patrick to play center and using fifth through seventh-round picks to fix the Bears’ weakest position group.

Poles has improved the tight end position through free agency but unless Cole Kmet makes a major leap forward, it is still not an elite position group.

It is fair to wonder if the new Chicago Bears front office is sold on Fields being a franchise quarterback.

Some have gone so far as to say the Chicago Bears are going to ruin Fields.

-Get drafted by coach/GM on hot seat

-Change coaches and scheme after rookie year

-Bad offensive line

-Lack of weapons

Bears are following the “how to ruin a young QB” script PERFECTLY so far.

— Ross Tucker (@RossTuckerNFL) May 19, 2022

Despite the off-season that did not yield Fields a better offensive line or wide receiver, Bears’ head coach Matt Eberflus still expects his quarterback to take a step forward in his second NFL season.

Someone must not have told Coach Eberflus that his boss did not do much in the off-season to help Fields get better. Although, Eberflus has this crazy notion that if Fields works on his fundamentals, timing, and decision-making, his quarterback will get better.

He has even gone so far as to believe the offense should be built around what Fields does well and not shoehorn him into an offense that might not fit his strengths.

“We’re going to build this offense around him, around his skill set… that’s the most important thing.”

Speaking the fans’ language, new @ChicagoBears head coach Matt Eberflus told us what he likes about QB @justnfields + how he’s building the offense around him:#NFL #GoBears pic.twitter.com/gr5Su9h0ON

— Rich Eisen Show (@RichEisenShow) May 20, 2022

Chicago Bears fans can be excused for being a bit cynical after four years of former head coach Matt Nagy arguing the exact opposite concepts. Detoxing from the Nagy era takes some time.

There seems to be an adjustment period in the Bears’ nation to the patient roster-building approach under Poles.

Again, that approach has not been used probably since the beginning of the Jerry Angelo era. Towards the end of the former general manager tenure, he was trading away draft picks to get Jay Cutler. Phil Emery followed Angelo and traded for Brandon Marshall, drafted Alshon Jeffrey, and signed Martellus Bennett.

Then there was seven years of former general manager Ryan Pace making aggressive moves to upgrade the offense. The aggressive, quick-fix approach led to Angelo, Emery, and Pace being fired. Maybe Poles is on to something by trying something different.

Despite the lack of playmakers and big question marks on the offensive line, it is not unreasonable to expect Justin Fields to improve upon his rookie season.

Chicago Bears depth chart predictions: Offensive LineJosh De Lucaon May 26, 2022 at 12:00 pm

Use your (arrows) to browse

The Chicago Bears have many decisions to make at every position this offseason. With so many new faces being added from both free agency and the draft, there is a lot of work to do. Some position groups on the team have a more obvious path to being finalized than others.

The offensive line is one of the Bears biggest question marks. The current line is currently very young and has a lot of potential. Not too many veterans or experienced players currently in that position group. Almost every single player in that room will be given an opportunity to show what they have during camp.

One of the reasons the depth chart will be harder to predict is because of all the recent draft capital general manager Ryan Poles spent on the O-line. Day three of the NFL draft saw the Bears select four different linemen, all of whom will be given an opportunity to compete for a spot.

With OTA’S just starting up for teams around the league, the Bears are still moving pieces around trying to figure out where different players will play. Overall, the offensive line doesn’t have much playing experience, and chemistry wise, are still working things out.

Thumbs, Tires, and Tradition. This Story Has It All.

Thumbs, Tires, and Tradition. This Story Has It All.

Some people (such as Barb) are born with green thumbs. Some people (such as residents of the planet Twilo) are born without thumbs. And then, there is me, born all thumbs.

To lay it on the line, I am no handyman. I put this down to nature and nurture. My dad lived to be 80 years old, and I don’t believe he ever held a tool in his hand. From his upbringing in a fairly up-scalish home in Berlin, through adulthood in various Chicago apartments, there was always someone else to do the dirty work.

That’s not to say I haven’t tried to be a macho man. I can pull out a toolbox laden with wrenches and hammers and screwdrivers. Yet every hose I attach to any faucet leaks, every screw I drive quickly becomes stripped, and every smart device I connect laughs at me.

All this is a long way of saying, that the other day when a nice co-worker came to tell me she had noticed my car in the parking lot with a flat tire, my first impulse was NOT to get out the car jack and crank ‘er up. To be honest, I didn’t even know if I had a jack–or a spare.

So I did what most Jewish males would do in my situation–I made a phone call. AAA promised me a service truck within about 45 minutes…and two hours later one arrived. No, the tech didn’t have the right tools to get my old tire off or to properly hitch up my car for a tow. But he was a nice guy, and managed to load the car onto his flatbed, tightened the straps, and took me and my ride to the AAA service center, a country music Sirius station playing all the way.

The guy at the service center desk looked tired and overworked but was nice enough to squeeze my car into the schedule and onto a lift. Up went the car, and after some sledgehammer work, off came the tire, revealing a slash on the inner sidewall. In the More Bad News Department, no replacement tire was available.

On went the slow-drive spare (yes, I did have one), and I began the long drive to the north suburbs. Fortunately, it was now rush hour, so I had no problem limiting my speed to 50 mph on the congested Tri-State Tollway. Also, fortunately, the tire dealer where I have already replaced 7 tires on my 4-year-old car was open and they had my tire size in stock. It would be a 90-minute wait, so Barb picked me up, we had a carry-out dinner, and got back to the tire dealer just before closing time.

As I drove home, I noticed I still had all my thumbs, and they were all still grease and grime free. From Berlin to Riverwoods, some things never change.

Primary primer

Starting today, Illinois voters can cast an early ballot ahead of the 2022 primary elections on June 28. From U.S. senator to Cook County board commissioner, there are races on all levels of government between both parties to keep an eye out for.

Here’s what to know before heading to the polls.

Where can I register to vote?

You can register to vote online or at various locations throughout the city, including the Cook County Clerk’s office, city clerk, driver’s license facility, or through any certified deputy registrar. You can also register to vote at any of the early voting sites.

What do I need to register to vote?

You need to present two forms of identification, at least one of which shows your current address.

When is the deadline for voter registration?

Illinois voters have until June 12, 2022, to register to vote online before the primary elections. The deadline for in-person registration before the primary election is May 31, 2022.

Which seats are up for election?

Many! At the federal level, Illinois voters will choose candidates for the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives. Statewide, Illinois voters will choose candidates for governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, secretary of state, comptroller, treasurer, state senate and state house of representatives.

In Cook County, voters will choose candidates for board president, board of commissioners, board of review, assessor, sheriff, clerk, treasurer, Metropolitan Water Reclamation District board, and circuit court judges.

How do I know which districts I’m in? (or who are my current representatives?)

You can use this lookup tool from the Illinois State Board of Elections website to find which legislative district you’re in. (Judicial subcircuit districts TBD.)

Who are the candidates?

A full list of the candidates is available on the Illinois State Board of Elections website

There are also nonpartisan voting guides that you can take to the polls with you including the League of Women Voters’s guide and Injustice Watch’s judicial guide. Girl, I Guess also has a progressive voter guide available.

Where can I early vote?

Beginning May 26, Chicago voters can cast an early ballot at the Chicago Board of Elections Supersite at 191 N. Clark from Monday through Fridays between 9 AM and 6 PM, Saturdays from 9 AM to 5 PM, and Sundays from 10 AM to 4 PM.

Early voting  in all 50 wards will start on June 13, 2022. See locations here.

In the past, politicians have co-opted progressive language from organizers in the Black liberation movement for their campaigns, hoping to win the Black vote.

Billionaire Ken Griffin is Illinois’s biggest political benefactor. But what are his donations doing to democracy?

From voter outreach to working for their communities, undocumented immigrants across the Chicago area don’t let their immigration status get in the way of participating politically.

Wilco’s folk-driven double album Cruel Country gives long time fans something fresh to love

In 1997, Wilco’s double album Being There became a fundamental pivot for the Chicago band in a decade filled with triumphs. Twenty-five years later, those songs live on in the band’s live shows, even though in the studio Wilco have traveled to a very different place. The evidence lies on Cruel Country, the band’s second double album: in contrast with the raucous energy of Being There, it’s more muted and serious, filled with unadorned folk songs that are as lovely as they are heartbreaking. That’s classic country all right, but not the kind you’ll hear at Carol’s Pub on a Saturday night. Instead, Jeff Tweedy’s often surreal lyrics touch the brokenness of an era defined by standing six feet apart. On “The Universe” he delivers one of his most affecting vocal performances: “So talk to me / I don’t want to hear poetry,” he sings. “Just say it plain / Like how you really speak.” Much of this album feels less concerned with flashy musical chops or studio magic than it is with channeling that kind of intimate yearning. Maybe that’s why the first couple of spins are challenging—not because of any high-art musical vocabulary, but because of the quiet spaces and storytelling. The closest comparison from Wilco’s past is Mermaid Avenue, their 1998 collaborative album with Billy Bragg that set poetry by Woody Guthrie to new music. Postmodern shades of the departed folk singer appear on Cruel Country in the waltz “I Am My Mother” and the psychedelic couplets of “Ambulance.” Tweedy’s acoustic guitar drives the sound throughout, but Pat Sansone and Nels Cline (on electric guitars, lap steel, and Dobro) keep it country, especially on the shuffle “A Lifetime to Find” and the chunky Bakersfield-type rocker “Falling Apart (Right Now).” The majority of these 21 songs were recorded live with few overdubs, which won’t surprise you if you’ve heard their effortless feel and quiet pulse. Don’t expect major band breakaways, only tiny triumphs: you won’t find a finer instrumental than the second half of “Many Worlds,” while at the opposite extreme, “Sad Kind of Way” is perfect baroque pop. The cruelty in Cruel Country is also its comfort: however dark the songs travel, they shed light on relatable truths. On “Hearts Hard to Find,” Tweedy confronts the guilt of feeling nothing “when certain people die,” singing, “My heart’s hard to find / Sometimes.” For the Wilco fan accustomed to the reliable touring unit perfected over many years, from Mexico to Massachusetts, Cruel Country may be your personal prompt to slow down and rediscover your favorite band.

5 sign-and-trade packages if Zach LaVine leaves the Chicago BullsRyan Heckmanon May 26, 2022 at 11:00 am

This summer, the Chicago Bulls face a critical offseason.

After last offseason seeing a ton of changes for the Bulls, personnel-wise, now they have a couple of big situations they’re faced with just a year later.

The Bulls made the postseason this past season, and at one point were in first place in the Eastern Conference. Things were good — real good. But, as the year went on, the Bulls were hampered by one key injury: point guard Lonzo Ball being lost for the season. Over the next few months, that might just be the biggest question regarding the Bulls. When will Ball be back?

Aside from the health of Ball, though, the Bulls have one huge free agent of their own — All Star guard Zach LaVine. While he can make more if he stayed in Chicago, LaVine has gone on record saying he’ll enjoy the free agency experience. But, what if he ultimately chooses to leave?

If Zach LaVine chose to leave, the Chicago Bulls should be prepared with some sign-and-trade offers.

Last year, we saw the sign-and-trade become ultra popular amongst teams with free agent players. It was actually pretty incredible what some teams were able to pull off.

The Bulls were able to land DeMar DeRozan and Lonzo Ball in a sign-and-trade, in fact, and we could see even more of those types of deals in the coming weeks.

Free agency will officially kick off on July 1. So, the Bulls have just about five weeks until they are faced with a big decision. To be frank, it’s up to LaVine. But, the Bulls must offer him the max if they want him to stay.

Again, if he doesn’t stick around, Chicago could revert to a sign-and-trade option. Which teams could make sense for this type of trade? There are five, specifically.
