Cards’ Flaherty leaves start with stiff shoulderon June 26, 2022 at 8:39 pm

St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Jack Flaherty left his start against the Chicago Cubs on Sunday because of stiffness in his right shoulder.

Flaherty threw 49 pitches, allowing one hit, walking two and striking out two before being relieved by right-hander Nick Wittgren in the top of the third inning.

Flaherty, 26, didn’t make his debut this season until June 15 because of an ailment in his right shoulder. He had a platelet-rich-plasma injection in his shoulder in early March to treat inflammation.

This was his third start since returning. He was 0-0 with a 7.50 ERA entering Sunday’s start.

He was 9-2 with a 3.22 ERA in 17 starts last season when he was slowed by an oblique injury.

For Some Things, We Are Hardly at a Loss For Words

For Some Things, We Are Hardly at a Loss For Words

It is said that the more important, the more prevalent, the more influential, the more dominant, the more frequent a phenomenon exists in any given society, culture, tribe, nation, even cult…the more words exist for it.

For example, it is believed that the Arctic-dwelling Inuits have about two dozen words for Ice.

Think, for instance, how many words Laplanders must have for Snow.

How many words Bedouins must have for Sand.

Pacific Islanders must have for Ocean.

Rain forest tribes for Trees.

Subsistence farmers have for Sun and Rain.

Etc.

Now consider these terms: Balderdash. Piffle. Malarkey. Hogwash. Poppycock. Rubbish. Claptrap. Blarney. Baloney. Rot. Garbage. Tripe. Bilge. Moonshine.Drivel. Bosh. Tosh. Hooey. Phooey. Hokum. Twaddle. Gobbledygook. Flapdoodle. Bunk. Jive. Guff. Hot Air. Codswallop. Bunkum. Nonsense. Hoodwink. Swindle. Defraud. Pretend. Cheat. Trick. Dupe. Hedge. Tommyrot. Gonif. Charlatan. Sting. Bunco. Hustle. Rip-off. Quack. Lie. Untruth. Fib. Falsehood. Fabrication. Fiction. Invention. Cock-and-bull story. Tall story. Tall tale. Flight of fancy. Fairy tale. Mountebank. Feigned. Whopper, Phony, Double-dealing, Hypocritical. Ersatz, Pseudo. Fake. Bogus. Mock. Sham. Counterfeit. Dodge. Prevaricate. Misinform. Disinform. Con. Grift. Pull a fast one. Bamboozle. Gull. Delude. Fool. Sucker. Snooker. Stiff. Dissemble. Duplicity. Mendacity. Sham. Dishonest. Phew. I’m exhausted. Guess I can afford to omit the voluminous vulgar slang.

Now consider this: In an English-speaking civilization such as–oh say–America, brimming with Trumpian-Kingdom cultists, exemplified by an insidiously tiny clot of Supreme Court jesters, and buttressed by those loyal colonies of self-serving dishonesty, Fox News, Newsmask, er, max, berserk rightwing radio, etc., it would seem–wouldn’t it?– that such a superabundance of connected terms suggests that maybe, just maybe, our republic is spilling over with… BULLSHIT!

D-backs call up Keuchel for start against Tigerson June 26, 2022 at 5:41 pm

The Arizona Diamondbacks are calling up Cy Young Award winner Dallas Keuchel to start Sunday’s game against the Detroit Tigers, manager Torey Lovullo told reporters.

Keuchel, 34, had signed a minor league contract with the Diamondbacks earlier this month. He had been released by the Chicago White Sox after going 2-5 with a 7.88 ERA through eight starts this season.

Keuchel won the American League Cy Young Award with the Houston Astros in 2015 and is a two-time All-Star and five-time Gold Glove winner.

By adding Keuchel to the 40-man roster, the Diamondbacks are responsible for a prorated share of the $700,000 major league minimum. The White Sox remain responsible for the rest of his $18 million salary this year and a $1.5 million buyout of a 2023 option.

Keuchel, who is 101-87 with a 3.86 ERA in 262 career games with 251 starts, last pitched in the majors for the White Sox on May 26, when he lasted just two innings, allowing seven hits and six runs in a 16-7 loss to the Boston Red Sox.

He was 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA in two starts while pitching in the Arizona Complex League prior to his call-up.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Leury Garcia is ruining the Chicago White Sox in 2022Vincent Pariseon June 26, 2022 at 3:00 pm

Leury Garcia is the longest-tenured player on the Chicago White Sox. To be honest, that is a disgusting disgraceful thing to say about this organization. He is an incredibly nice man and a very hard worker. Anybody who denies that doesn’t watch the games.

However, he doesn’t belong on a Major League roster anymore. Unfortunately, the White Sox not only have him on their roster but he plays in most of their games. He has played most positions on the diamond both in his career and this season.

So far in 2022, he is ruining their chance to win on a daily basis. He has a batting average below .200, he makes a lot of errors when he plays second base (which is the one position of need for the White Sox), and he has a negative WAR.

A lot of this was on full display during Saturday’s loss to the Baltimore Orioles. He did manage to have a hit and a walk which is a miracle. However, when he finally has a game where he reaches base twice, he decides to have his worst defensive game as a pro.

The Chicago White Sox are going nowhere and Leury Garcia is a big reason. why.

Garcia had one official error in the game during the sixth inning but he messed up a few other routine plays which allowed Baltimore to extend innings and score runs. This guy simply hurts the team so much more than he helps it.

All of these are examples of things that would have a contender moving on from him but the White Sox don’t act like contenders. To be honest, they don’t look like it anymore either. Leury Garcia is one of the things ruining their chance at being good this year.

The White Sox are 15-29 in games that Leury Garcia started this season. That is not good. That is a pace of a 57-win team. However, they are 18-8 in games where Garcia doesn’t play. Those are both relatively small sample sizes but the numbers there are not looking good at all.

Chicago is not a healthy team as some big-time players are out but they are deep enough to avoid using Garcia this much. There are Minor League players (including Lenyn Sosa who is already up with them) that can help more. This Leury Garcia experiment needs to end soon.

A Look At The Week That Was. Donald Trump Emails Donny Jr.

Donald Trump in Illinois–photo courtesy Chicago Tribune

Les is More readers: I found this email in my inbox this morning. I don’t know who leaked it to me, but thanks.

Hey Donny,

What a week, hey? It’s the hugest since the Dems and Libtards and the LGBTQholes “stole” the election.

Just think, it is almost two years later and half the country still believes that bullshit. But as long as it keeps adding to my bottom line and keeps these idiot hicks chanting my name we’ll keep pushing the story. Good thing they aren’t watching the Congressional faux hearings, not that those cretins would understand a thing being said.

Speaking of those hayseeds, I just spent the day in Quincy, Illinois endorsing morons. What a shithole downstate Illinois is. Christ, it’s practically Iowa. If they allowed abortions after incest the population would be zero.

And while incest family is on my mind, what do you think of that crap from Ivanka? Doesn’t she know that if she stops the steal story she stops my money machine? And if she stops my money machine she stops the cash flow into her trust. What an airhead. She’s gotten to be as goofy as Jared, not that she was ever particularly bright.

How’s Kimmy? Still hot?

Gotta love the Supreme Court though. Thanks to my humongous nominations of Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and that Coney Barrett chick I get to take the credit, not that I give a rat’s ass about abortion rights. If I get anyone in ‘the family way” I can still fly ’em off to some other country for the necessaries…you don’t have to worry about any new brother or sister brats. I made THAT mistake 16 years ago.

But how about those back-stabbers McConnell and McCarthy letting some new gun legislation pass? I haven’t read it but I hate it. Like I said before, I could shoot either of them on Time Square and not lose a single vote. MTG would probably pin a medal on my chest–not that I would let that face within ten feet of me.

OK, I’m tired of writing. Carlson is on.

Chicago Bears should address linebacker after Matt Adams incidentRyan Heckmanon June 26, 2022 at 2:00 pm

Just two days ago, the Chicago Bears received some unfortunate news about a newly-signed veteran.

Former Indianapolis Colts linebacker and first-year Bears backer Matt Adams was arrested on Friday and charged with a misdemeanor firearm possession.

According to police, Adams was found to have a weapon in his car, along with a high-capacity magazine and metal-piercing bullets. The Bears have yet to make an official comment or statement on Adams’ situation, as they gather additional information.

What’s especially unfortunate about this situation is that Adams is a Matt Eberflus guy. The new Bears head coach was influential in bringing over the former Colts linebacker and special teams standout, and it appeared Adams even had a chance to start on the outside.

With the news of Matt Adams’ arrest, the Chicago Bears need to address their lack of depth at outside linebacker.

This offseason, the Bears also added former Las Vegas Raiders linebacker Nicholas Morrow, who by all accounts will start next to Roquan Smith.

Morrow’s injury history is a little concerning, though, but the Bears don’t have much depth behind he or Adams at the moment.

Names that are currently behind Morrow and Adams include Christian Allbright, Jack Sanborn, Noah Dawkins and Joe Thomas. Haven’t heard much about those guys? Exactly. The Bears have failed to address linebacker this offseason and it could end up costing them, should Adams’ future be in question.

Fortunately for the Bears, there are still a wide array of veteran free agents available. Some of the names that have yet to find a new team include: Anthony Barr, K.J. Wright, A.J. Klein and Jamie Collins.

Adams very well could receive a suspension for the first couple of games in the coming days, and if he does, then the Bears don’t have a single reliable backup to start in his place. Heck, Adams wasn’t even a reliable starter to begin with. This was his chance to do so.

Not many people have talked about the Bears’ linebacker depth this offseason, but it isn’t a strength of theirs. Outside of Smith, the Bears don’t have anyone they can count on to stay on the field and produce.

Hopefully, this incident with Adams will get general manager Ryan Poles actively thinking about adding more talent to the position. Ideally, signing one more veteran free agent to the mix could help the Bears avoid a tough situation come Week 1.

Latest on Lonzo Ball’s knee is encouraging for the Chicago BullsRyan Heckmanon June 26, 2022 at 1:00 pm

For a while now, there has been much uncertainty about the future of Chicago Bulls point guard Lonzo Ball due to a lack of progress made following his surgery back in January.

In that procedure, Ball had a torn meniscus repaired. But, what really caused issues was a bone bruise that happened prior to that surgery. Since the procedure, Ball has tried to ramp up his conditioning and rehab multiple times. But, each time, he has endured a setback.

Experiencing pain when trying to take steps in his rehab, Ball’s knee and his immediate future started to come into question. There have even been doubts about his availability come the start of next season.

But, recently, general manager Marc Eversley spoke to NBC Sports columnist K.C. Johnson about Ball’s progress and things are starting to point in a positive direction.

The latest on Lonzo Ball and his knee is a huge positive for the Chicago Bulls.

Eversley told Johnson that Ball is “making progress” in his recovery, finally.

“Currently working out in LA, still doing his rehab. We have sent our performance staff to see him every week and track his progress. All reports are good. He’s making progress.”

Johnson asked Eversley whether he thinks Ball could play if games were going on right now, but Eversley deferred to his training staff for that answer, saying, “That’s not a call I can make now. I can just tell you that he’s rehabbing and he’s making progress.”

Now, Johnson went on to ask if Ball would be ready for the start of training camp in October, and Eversley sounded as though the point guard was trending that way: “I certainly hope so.”

It is no secret that, when Ball went out last season, the Bulls suffered on both ends of the court. Defensively, they lost their best perimeter defender next to Alex Caruso. Ball’s defense often led to offense via the fast break, and once his presence was gone, the Bulls struggled big time in that department.

Offensively, there was no better facilitator on this roster than Ball. But, beyond running the offense, Ball was also the Bulls’ best three-point shooter. Losing him truly put a damper on the Bulls’ ability to score from deep.

When Chicago drafted Arizona point guard Dalen Terry just a few days ago, it almost seemed as though the pick was an indictment on Ball’s immediate future. But, it might be more of an indictment on Coby White, who will likely be traded this offseason.

To hear positive things about Ball and his progress is a huge victory for Bulls Nation. Hopefully, his progress only continues in the upward direction at this stage.

Game Recap

Iowa got great work from their pitching staff on what was essentially a bullpen day. Luke Farrell has been in and out of the rotation since joining the club last month, and he got the start. He’d pitch pretty well, and that would be the theme: not overwhelming, but good enough to keep the I-Cubs in the game. Anueris Rosario and Blake Whitney followed. I actually though Whitney threw the ball a little better, but he would get tagged with the loss. Michael Rucker threw the final two innings and was definitely the best of the bunch. He has not surrendered a run since being sent to Iowa a couple of weeks ago.

There just wasn’t much in the way of offense from the lineup yesterday. Nobody had more than one hit. The one run they scored came off a throwing error. Narciso Crook stole second base after a walk, then while stealing third the throw went into LF, allowing him to head home.

Injuries, Updates, and Trends

Years after the Cubs moved him off the position, Jared Young made a start at 2B. It was the 5th (plus DH) different position he has started at this season (1B, RF, LF, 3B, 2B). Originally drafted as a middle infielder in 2017, Young played only two games at 2B (in 2018) since his draft year. I always thought it was a bit strange they limited his defensive profile so early in his career. He wasn’t amazing at 2B, but moving him to 1B really put a lot of pressure on his bat. I don’t think it is a coincidence the Cubs have recently expanded his defensive role. The bat hasn’t blossomed enough (.250/.328/.456) for him to be a full-time corner guy, but as a versatile lefty bat off the bench, Young has a shot at a big league future.

Game Recap

The Ryan Jensen rebound continues at pace. This time out he tossed another three scoreless. His command and consistency have been much improved since returning from the developmental list with a new shortened arm path. In three games he has now accumulated eight scoreless innings (5 H, 0 R, BB, HBP, 6 K).

Tennessee didn’t get great work from the pen after he left though. Eight runs over the final six innings off three different relievers tarnished a great start, and good offensive performance. Cole Roederer, Jake Slaughter, and Andy Weber stayed hot at the plate, and then Matt Mervis and Chase Strumpf hit back-to-back homers in the 7th to keep the Smokies in it before the comeback fell short.

Game Recap

It hasn’t always been easy for D.J. Herz over the last couple of weeks. He remained tough to hit, but he was missing the zone a bit more, and wasn’t missing as many bats. The old D.J. Herz resurfaced yesterday. He did little but miss bats in this one, recording 10 of his 14 outs via strikeout.

Adam Laskey followed with 1.1 scoreless in his first High-A appearance, picking up right where he left off in Myrtle Beach. He’s now extended his scoreless streak to open the season to 27.1 innings. Laskey has generated a ton of ground balls while issuing few free passes. He suffered through a bunch of injuries in college and his early pro career which kept him from fulfilling his promise as a starter. Now healthy, and in a late inning relief role, Laskey has gotten on a quite a roll to begin the season. At 24, South Bend is a more appropriate level for someone of his experience and so we should get a better idea of his upside now that he’s facing hitters his own age.

The recently activated Michael McAvene fired two scoreless, and the recently struggling Hunter Bigge bounced back with a scoreless 9th to complete the shutout.

Despite the great pitching, the Cubs still needed a walkoff hit to win it. Other than Owen Caissie and Fabian Pertuz, who each went 3-for-4, South Bend hitters managed just two hits. But it was that combo who eventually won it. With two outs, Caissie singled, then swiped second base. One batter later, Fabian Pertuz put an end to it.

D-backs calling up Keuchel for start vs. Tigerson June 26, 2022 at 1:46 pm
