Winter Leagues Week 12
Good morning! Hope everyone had a good New Year, and are looking forward to year full of baseball. The time between the holidays is always a slow one for the winter leagues, but there was still plenty of Cubs prospect action. For more, take a look inside!
Venezuelan Winter League
Bravos de Margarita
On Sunday, Margarita continued their quest for a playoff spot in Venezuela by beating La Guaira 13-5. Cubs lefty Manuel Rondon entered in the fourth and had three strikeouts while allowing an earned run on five hits and walk as he tossed three innings to grab the victory. Margarita 13 – La Guaira 5
Cardenales de Lara
In Game 2 on Monday. Lara stumbled to Magallanes in losing 3-2 in seven innings. Cubs infield prospect Ildemaro Vargas led off and played second base, going 1-for-2 with two walks and a stolen base in the effort. Magallanes 3 – Lara 2, 7 innings
The Cardenales lost ground on Wednesday as the fell to Anzoategui 4-3. Ildemaro Vargas was 2-for-5 as he remained at lead-off but moved to Designated Hitter. Yapson Gomez came on in the sixth and gave up an earned run on a walk and two hits in an inning of work. Anzoategui 4 – Lara 3
Caribes de Anzoategui
Anzoategui lost some ground on Sunday in their fight for the playoffs as they lost 5-4 to Lara. Fernando Kelli got the start in centerfield and came through by going 1-for-3 with a walk, a double, and a run scored in the loss. Lara 5 – Anzoategui 4
Within two games from the top of the standings, the Caribes took it to Caracas on Monday in a 3-1 victory. Fernando Kelli remained in centerfield and went 1-for-4 in the game. Anzoategui 3 – Caracas 1
It was one of those days on Tuesday when you wish you didn’t show up at the ballpark, as the Tribe lost 14 -3 to Caracas. Fernando Kelli once again started in centerfield, but left after five innings, going 1-for-2 in the loss. Caracas 14 – Anzoategui 3
Rain suspended action on Saturday, but Anzoategui had things well in hand as they led La Guaira 15-1 after four and a half innings. Rafael Ortega returned to the top of the line-up and in centerfield, going 2-for-3 with a walk, double, triple, and two runs scored, so far. Anzoategui 15 – La Guaira 1, 4.5 innings
Notes
The Dominican Winter League ended their regular season and began playoffs, with Aguilas Cibaenas, Toros del Este, Estrellas de Oriente, Gigantes del Cibao participating. There are no current Cubs prospects that are part of the rosters.
The Mexican Pacific League and the Roberto Clemente League began their playoffs on Saturday.
