What’s Happening This Week in Space: August 30th 2021
School is back in session for Chicago students, fall is just around the corner, and there is plenty happening in space this week. From sky shows to a spacewalk, this is what’s happening this week in space.
Cosmic Sky Show, Adler Planetarium, September 4th & 5th, 10:30 am, 11:30 am, 12:15 pm, and 1:15 pm
The Adler Planetarium exhibits are still closed, but you can catch one of their Cosmic sky shows in the dome theater this weekend. All times require advance ticket purchases. More details here: Adler Planetarium
Field Free Admission Day, Field Museum, September 1st
All Illinois residents can explore the Field Museum for free on the 1st (next Free Admission day is set for September 8th). Discover the museum’s meteorite collection and learn how scientists study the farthest corners of the Universe. More information: Field Museum
Space Center Exhibits, Cernan Earth and Space Center, River Grove, M-F 9:30-4:30
The rise in COVID cases in the area has delayed the reopening of the Planetarium and public programs, but guests are welcome to visit the space and science exhibits. Cernan Earth and Space Center is home to spaceflight artifacts, a telescope exhibit, and a Nike Tomahawk missile and Apollo capsule used to practice ocean recoveries. More information here: Cernan Center
Russian Spacewalk, International Space Station, Friday September 3rd, 9 am CDT
Russian astronauts will be conducting a spacewalk this week, #49 for the agency, to begin outfitting the new Nauka Multipurpose Laboratory Module that was launched to Station last month. Watch here: NASA Live

Meet The Blogger
Sophie Sanchez
I’m a tiny bit obsessed with space. I’m told it’s an acceptable obsession because I take what I learn and share it with others. If I’m not writing about space, among other things, I’m busy doing science with one of the many student orgs I volunteer with or, advocating to bring more STEM programs to underrepresented students. I miss working in a lab, so invite me out to see yours!
