Looking for the Good
What will you miss?
I went for a walk on my lunch break earlier this week, and I walked past my old apartment. My three daughters and I lived there for 11 years, moving in when they were only 5, 7 and 9 years old. It was small for us, but for me it was a wonderful home. I have a joyful feeling about that time even though when I lived there, I wanted to move to a bigger place. I was flooded with such happy memories as I snapped a picture, and realized that I really miss it. I often don’t appreciate something until it’s gone, but to reverse that habit, reflection has become a great tool for me. I am getting so anxious for life to return to normal, but I do know that besides the obvious reasons to maintain social distancing in order to stay safe and keep others safe, there are some things I will miss about this unusual time in my life. The main three things are:
- Time
- Kindness
- Connection
Time: I definitely have more time to read, relax and watch TV. I can take a walk on my lunch break and sleep in since I don’t need to drive to work or even get dressed for the day. I can let go of that pressure to be social, to do things, to accomplish more.
Kindness: Generally, people are being more kind. Yes, I could look for the mean people, but I focus on the kindness. Many things are even free like the plays I have watched on YouTube and the different newspaper articles I can read without having to subscribe.
Connection: Life has slowed down for me, and I am being forced to discover new ways to stay connected to my daughters, family, friends, and work colleagues. I have done more FaceTime, Zoom and even old-fashioned phone calls than ever before and most people are even available since they too are not as busy.
There are so many things from everyday life I could focus on missing, and believe me that list is long, but today I want to focus on all that I do have and be grateful. Sometimes I just don’t know what I will miss until it is gone. I will feel gratitude and happiness for them right now, and live in this present moment today!

While it is easy to focus on the negative aspects of life, I choose to continue looking for the good in people and in the world around me, and I want to share why they do what they do. I am the proud mother of three adult daughters and live in the Chicago area. I have worked in the Early Childhood Education field since 2001, and I write books when the inspiration comes.
