The Chicago Bears were destroyed by the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night. It was a bad performance by pretty much everyone and Aaron Rodgers got to improve his record against the Bears to 24-5. It is embarrassing at this point.
There were a lot of players that underperformed based on their standards but one guy sticks out above the rest in a negative way. Roquan Smith was the big story during the offseason as he was dealing with contract-related stuff.
He wants to be amongst the highest-paid linebackers in the NFL. He is a self-represented player that ended up joining the team despite not getting an extension done. There are a few things that Roquan needs to realize as soon as possible.
The first thing is that he would be better off with an agent. Self-representing isn’t common in sports and it is hard to see him maximizing his money-making opportunity without an agent to rely on.
The Chicago Bears did not get a good game from Roquan Smith on Sunday.
The next reason is that linebacker isn’t a premier position in the NFL anymore. It is not what it used to be in terms of impact because of the fact that it is a passing league.
Obviously, a quarterback, an edge rusher, a left tackle, the defensive backfield, and a wide receiver are all more important in modern football.
The last thing is that Smith needs to be much better than he was on Sunday night against the Green Bay Packers. He had a fair amount of tackles but a lot of it was him chasing people down that had him beat.
The Packers were able to run all over the Bears with both Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon. It was a bad showing for the Bears’ defense and that is where Smith needs to make his money. If he plays like he did on Sunday all season long, he isn’t going to make nearly what he thought.
Of course, Roquan Smith isn’t surrounded by much help so you can’t fully be mad at him for the way that he played. He is the best player on the defense which is a problem because having a linebacker as your best defensive player is a recipe for disaster.
He needs more help so we will evaluate him further when he gets it but you can’t be a guy that needs help and expect to be paid like that.
It also doesn’t help that the offense was a joke once again leaving the defense on the field for most of the game. Also, that quarterback on the other side is pretty good.
At the end of the day, Roquan Smith needs to be better. He will be but it makes it worse after how the summer went and who the opponent is. With the Houston Texans coming to town, he has a chance to redeem himself on Sunday.
