Chicago’s Art and Beer Scene
The ShowPlace ICON Theatre has been Repurposed
The ShowPlace ICON Theatre at Roosevelt Collection Shops isn’t currently open due to the pandemic. Just because the interior is temporarily closed, doesn’t mean visiting isn’t warranted, especially if you’re smitten with art.
An uplifting makeover
The ICON received a makeover with the addition of uplifting murals thanks to the direction of Beth Swanson. Beth is the owner of Rostrum 312, an organization that curates artists to turn empty storefronts into momentary art galleries.
Psst…I’m not posting all the beautiful, meaningful artwork because I don’t want to take away from the full experience.
Local artists were invited
Beth announced the project via Instagram back in June, rounding up local artists to paint the plywood panels around the theatre. The artists could choose what they wanted to paint and the messages are what we need moving forward. Have you seen it? If not, there’s still time before the theatre can safely resume service.
Contact for future opportunities
Check out and follow @rostrum312 on Instagram to learn about all the artists involved in this project. If you wish to take part in future painting opportunities, please contact Beth at [email protected] or through Instagram messaging.
Shop til you drop
Don’t forget to show some love to the many businesses that have reopened at Roosevelt Collection Shops. They will sincerely appreciate your patronage. Do you have a favorite? I have two — Francesca’s and H&M.
The back door, please
I recommend exiting out the back when you leave to witness a jaw-dropping, permanent mural by Max Sansing.

Sher
My greatest passion is street art. I’m constantly pounding the pavement in search of murals with eyes wide open, so follow me on my colorful journey. View all my findings on Instagram @sherhuntsmurals.
Another passion is beer. I consider myself a beer snob with a preference given to stouts and porters. I’m always willing to try new styles because beer is life. Prost!
