About The Poetry Book Small Altars
Small Altars by Keli Stewart is a profound collection of poetry. From autobiographical memoirs to poignant social commentary, this book highlights the struggles and triumphs of a Black woman coming of age, and as a single mother in today’s society.
The poems span the author’s life from her as a girl, awakening to the ways of the world and learning from her ancestors to her struggles with identity and motherhood, to her reflections as a wiser woman looking back on her life. Within all this, we get brilliant glimpses of enlightened social commentary with reflections of and critiques on race, gender, and social class.
Full of humor and sentiment, this book has layers of Stewart’s visceral thoughts and ideas about the world as it stands today, as well as her reflections on how this all came to be.
