The ban on assault weapons needs to start in Illinois

Sandy Hook Elementary School, in Newtown, Connecticut. December 14, 2012. Twenty-six dead. Twenty children, six adults.

Robb Elementary School, in Uvalde Texas, May 24, 2022. Twenty-one children, two adults.

After the massacre in Newtown, there were calls for strict gun safety legislation, especially on assault weapons. Nothing was done.

After the massacre in Uvalde, there were calls for strict gun safety legislation, especially on assault weapons. Nothing was done.

In the ten years between the two school mass shootings, there have been so many episodes of mass killings done with an assault weapon that we’ve lost count. Nothing has ever been done.

If the sight of dead children doesn’t move our federal legislators to do something about these weapons of mass destruction, don’t expect what happened on the 4th of July, in Highland Park to change anything.

However, that doesn’t mean something can’t be done locally. It should begin in the state of the latest mass shooting. It should begin in Illinois.

HB5522 is a proposed bill that would ban the possession and sales of assault weapons in Illinois. So many of these weapons that are used in mass shootings have been purchased LEGALLY. This bill, while not making it impossible to acquire an assault weapon, would make it much harder. There’s no question that HB5522 would save lives.

No more Newtowns. No more Uvaldes. No more Highland Parks. Sign the petition. Call your local representative. Email the Governor. Tell then HB5522 needs to become the law. NOW! We’ve had more than enough,

Every five years or so I decide to update this section. I can’t believe I’ve been doing this for close to ten years. The last time I did this I was close to sixty years old. Now I’m just a few months away from the big 7-ZERO. Scary AF!!! I’m pretty sure I won’t be doing an update when I hit 80, but you never know. But until then, lets just be grateful.
