The Vaughn McClure Foundation will send out journalism scholarship applications to Mid Suburban League schools this week, the first step in honoring the former Sun-Times sportswriter.

McClure later worked for the Tribune and spent the last seven years of his life covering the Falcons for ESPN.com before his death in October at age 48. He is a 1990 graduate of Conant High School in Hoffman Estates.

The foundation has set aside $5,000 for it first scholarship, which will be awarded to a two senior students who have made an impact in the fields of journalism or multimedia communications. The winner gets $3,500, with second place receiving $1,500.

The deadline for the application, which will be available at Mid Suburban League schools, is April 15. the winner will be announced May 3.

The foundation plans to expand its high school scholarship plans and endow a scholarship at NIU, his alma mater.
