Release Radar – 8/27/21 – Isla vs My Morning Jacket
This week we finally get Englewood’s full-length album, and it’s a gem! Also, My Morning Jacket return, and Josh Rouse drops his new project, Isla, on us. Welcome to another edition of Release Radar.
“El Paso” is unlike nothing The Vaccines have released yet. A subdued and sweet, capsulated release that is best taken in tiny increments, to avoid addiction. It’s the fourth single from their fifth studio album, Back In Love City, due out on September 10.
There is no one doing what Englewood is doing at the moment. His version of jazz meets hip-hop has this island flare, a la “A Little Salsa,” that makes you want to sit on a beach and watch the waves roll in. Englewood has put out several albums, but Jacuzzi Jams might be his best?
“Ugh.” That’s the feeling I got when I heard that Django Django is releasing a deluxe version, with five new songs, of their latest incredible release, Glowing In The Dark. I say that because now I have to purchase the new version after I had previously bought the old one. But I will. That’s how good their new single, “Under Fire.” is. I want all five new songs packaged together, so I’ll have to bite the bullet, as they are one of my favorite bands these days.
Josh Rouse’s new band Isla finally released their debut album, The Mediterranean Gardener. Word on the street is they are playing Space in Evanston this fall as well, stay tuned.
Looks like Jim James got the band back together, and My Morning Jacket has released a new single called “Regularly Scheduled Programming.” Man, it’s good to hear this crew again, I’ve been missing their sound.
Your Jazz Cut Of The Week is a two-for-one on this balmy Friday morning. You get John Coltrane and his moody piece “A Love Supreme, Pt IV – Psalm,” and Robert Glasper, featuring Lalah Hathaway, bringing the soulful “Show Me Your Soul.” They both moved me and I couldn’t decide which tune to pick. So, for the first time, you get two jazz cuts this week! Enjoy!
