Release Radar 5/8/20: !!! vs The Kooks
Hello, friends and welcome to another edition of Release Radar, for the week ending, business-like, May 8, 2020.
We just got word from Mayor Lightfoot that Chicago will reopen in 5 Phases without a reliable vaccine. Likely, we won’t see one until 2021.
[embedded content]As more folks begin singing 311’s “Don’t Stay Home,” I will be sitting on my couch, finishing up Mr. Robot, sheltering in place.
[embedded content]One of my all-time favorite rappers, Astronautilus, returns with a guest spot on Ok, Parade’s “How We Wanted It,” with Wesley Eisenhauer.
[embedded content]!!! give us a groovy start to a summer we all so desperately need, with “So We Can Fuck.” This song picks up right where Wallop left off. Get into this deep beat and let it ride.
The Kooks released an EP a few weeks back, and their latest single might be their best of the bunch? “All Through Your Life” is the song and I’m loving this demo version for its energy and rawness.
[embedded content]More Gorillaz, more Butch, and more Cold War Kids. The Growlers inject us into a “Dream World,” and Matt Costa makes an appearance with “Avenal,” reminding me of Josh Rouse at times.
[embedded content]I love that the Doves are in my radar this week with an acoustic version of “There Goes The Fear.” It’s such a great song, I miss them and hope for more new music from this incredible band.
JR JR gives us another cut called “Cops,” from their forthcoming double album. Can we get an “Amen!” for a new Cut Copy music? This one is a slow burn but stick with it.
[embedded content]It’s been a while since we’ve heard from Ray Lamontagne. “We’ll Make It Through” showcases the soulful pipes that many of us fell for.
Maverick Sabre makes another guest appearance, this time on DJ Zinc’s, “Through It All,” which he crushes. I love his voice but wish the beat was less busy as it muddies the water. This song should breathe more.
Both Caveman and Hablot Brown have released new music, while Weezer releases another dud.
[embedded content]Can’t get out of here without hipping you to some cool jazz sounds from Ambrose Akinmusire. His “Mr. Roscoe (consider the simultaneous)” is your slice of the week.
