Doom Flower enrich their new album with trip-hop mystiqueLeor Galilon December 26, 2022 at 12:00 pm

While Chicago indie supergroup Doom Flower were getting to work on their new second album, Limestone Ritual (Record Label), they hit a speedbump that would’ve killed a lesser band’s momentum. As Tribune critic Britt Julious reported in a November profile, drummer Areif Sless-Kitain couldn’t make it to the recording sessions, and because he’s such a cool, intuitive, in-the-pocket player (with a list of credits that includes the Eternals and Brokeback), he’s difficult if not impossible to replace. Front woman Jess Price (of Campdogzz) and bassist Bobby Burg (Love of Everything, Joan of Arc) made the best of the situation by lifting drum tracks from a breakbeat record, which gives Limestone Ritual a distinct trip-hop effervescence. Matt Lemke (Wedding Dress) embellishes the spartan sampled percussion with svelte synths that give the songs a futuristic lounge mystique. Limestone Ritual doesn’t have a single focal point—the interplay between Price’s tendrils of guitar and Burg’s resonant, minimal bass is as engrossing as Price’s half-mumbled singing. The sublime, easygoing guitar melody of “Break Cycle” exudes a sleepy optimism, which is exactly the tone I’d like to see for the music of 2023.

Doom Flower Chris Sutter (Meat Wave) and the Deepdogs DJs (members of Deeper) open. Thu 1/5, 8:30 PM, California Clipper, 1002 N. California, $5, 21+

Margins of victory highlight Bulls’ continued issues on defense

The margins were small for the Bulls in their previous two games, but they won both.

Their 10-point win against the Heat was the largest margin of victory for coach Billy Donovan’s team during the three-game winning streak, the Bulls’ longest of the season, that was snapped by the Rockets on Monday. Against the Hawks and Knicks, the games could’ve gone either way, and that’s something Donovan didn’t shy away from.

“Obviously, Ayo [Dosunmu] made a great play at the end [of the Bulls’ 110-108 victory against the Hawks],” Donovan said. “The Knicks situation, [Jalen] Brunson misses two free throws at the end. We would’ve had the ball back, potentially down three. We’ve been in some of those situations, Orlando particularly, where we’re up by two with free throws and miss the free throws.”

Donovan doesn’t necessarily like the small margins of victory, but he was pleased with how his team is competing on both ends of the floor. Just over a week ago, that was a glaring concern as the Bulls opened a four-game trip giving up 150 points to the Timberwolves, a franchise record for Minnesota.

That brings up Donovan’s lingering concerns. They start and end with his team’s defense.

“Offensively, we’ve gotten better,” Donovan said. “I’m a little bit concerned defensively. I think that’s gone the other way. There was a time when we were seventh; we were pretty consistent. Then when you give up 150 points, that’s going to crush your rating.”

The Bulls’ 112.7 defensive rating had them 17th in the league with a tough stretch coming up, including a home game against the Bucks, two games against the Cavaliers, a home game against the Nets and road games against the 76ers and Celtics.

Injury bug

Forward Javonte Green was a game-time decision after going through shootaround Monday morning feeling well, but he was eventually ruled out against the Rockets.

Donovan said the nagging swelling and soreness in his right knee that has sidelined him for eight games had subsided, but the Bulls’ medical staff wanted to assess him after his pregame routine.

Donovan didn’t know the exact timetable for guard Alex Caruso’s return but had a promising update on his status after he suffered a concussion and sprained his right shoulder against the Hawks last Wednesday.

“He’s gone through a series of concussion-protocol stuff, which he has passed,” Donovan said. “The next part of him passing the concussion protocol is him doing some form of contact.”

Caruso’s shoulder sprain has limited his ability to participate and take contact. So it’s his shoulder that’s holding him back more so than the concussion, Donovan said.

Donovan didn’t elaborate but added that Caruso was experiencing concussion symptoms in New York. He didn’t begin tests until the team returned to Chicago.

Two bigs

Donovan went with a fresh pairing in the 118-117 victory Friday over the Knicks, using Andre Drummond and Nikola Vucevic on the court together for the first time.

There were two factors that went into Donovan’s decision: injuries and the Knicks thrashing the Bulls on the boards in the teams’ previous meeting. The Bulls allowed the Knicks to score 14 points on 15 offensive rebounds in the second of their back-to-back losses to Tom Thibodeau’s team.

It doesn’t sound like a pairing Donovan will be using often, however.

“I don’t know if that lineup is necessarily something we would have done if they would have played with four guards or a power forward that’s a little bit smaller,” Donovan said. “The way it worked out, we were able to do that.”

Defense plagues Bulls in 133-118 loss to lowly Rockets

There was high energy in the tunnel outside the locker rooms Monday night.

Music blared, and players laughed as game time neared. Unfortunately for the Bulls, it was the Rockets who were enjoying themselves, and they continued to have fun for four quarters. The Bulls struggled to keep up.

Coach Billy Donovan’s team, which had won three in a row and seemed to have turned a corner, was slapped back down by the Rockets, who cruised to a 133-118 victory at the United Center.

“We have to find ways to sustain, have the stamina to do it night after night after night,” Donovan said. “You have to be able to collectively rely on your defense to give yourself a chance every night. Going back to Minnesota, it was 150. Tonight, it’s 133. It’s hard to overcome those numbers.”

As the Bulls tried to erase a deficit that had ballooned to 18 points at one point, a fan in Section 117 repeated, “Chase them into the locker room!”

Zach LaVine responded by scoring eight points in less than a minute, including a dunk reminiscent of his days before knee management.

He sent the Bulls to the locker room with a three-pointer at the buzzer.

Before the last two minutes of the second quarter, LaVine struggled to get anything going. He went 0-for-5 from the field in the first quarter and was hit with a technical after a no-call on a drive to the rim.

Donovan has often expressed concern with his team’s defense. With three of their best defenders sidelined with injuries, the Bulls have struggled to stop opponents.

They’re allowing 28.9 points in the first quarter. They allowed 36 against the Rockets, who shot 66.7% from the field. The Bulls shot only 40% in the first quarter.

DeMar DeRozan led the Bulls with 31 points, nine assists and five rebounds. LaVine had 22 points and went 9-for-19 from the field.

The Bulls allowed 60 points in the paint and 15 points off turnovers. Kevin Porter Jr. went 14-for-22 from the field and had a game-high 36 points for the Rockets. Alperen Sengun scored 25 points, missing only two shots, and Jalen Green added 24.

The Rockets have the worst field-goal percentage in the league at 44.3% but shot 55.6% against the Bulls.

“They clearly started the game as the aggressors,” Donovan said. “The ball went wherever it wanted to go. For guys like Green and Porter, they get going early, and it’s hard to turn them off. They weren’t under any duress.”

With four minutes left and the Bulls trailing by 15, the 300 level at the United Center tried to get everyone involved in the wave. Their efforts were as futile as the Bulls’ attempts at a comeback, and fans started to head for the exits three minutes before the final horn.

The Bulls are 4-1 against the top three teams in the Eastern Conference but have a bad habit of playing down to their opponents. The lowly Rockets made a mockery of the Bulls on their home court, dropping them to 14-19 on the season.

“They just played freely,” DeRozan said. “Doing whatever they wanted to do. Give credit to them, they hit a lot of tough shots, but, for the most part, we let them get on a run. A team like that, they don’t know any better. Once they see a couple go in, they’re going to shoot anything.”

Chicago Bears News: Justin Fields disrespected by Pro Bowl selectionsVincent Pariseon December 22, 2022 at 1:00 pm

The Chicago Bears came into the 2022 season without enough talent to be a good team in the NFL. All they had was a quarterback that they are trying to develop with limited weapons and some solid players on defense.

Well, after trading guys like Robert Quinn and Roquan Smith, you can’t expect the defense too much else. They just simply aren’t good enough.

It is no surprise that the Bears are 3-11 staring down a game against the Buffalo Bills who are one of the best teams in the entire National Football League. This Christmas Eve matchup is not going to be easy for the Bears.

Now, on Wednesday night, the NFL announced their selections for the 2022 Pro Bowl. Justin Fields was thought to be someone that might make it as he is just the third player in NFL history to reach 1000 rushing yards as a quarterback. He has a chance to break the single-season record.

Justin Fields is not going to represent the Chicago Bears in the Pro Bowl.

They completely disrespected him though as the NFC is sending Jalen Hurts, Geno Smith, and Kirk Cousins. That is a complete joke as Fields is very well deserving of this honor.

Hurts is the only one that deserves it more than Justin. If his injury isn’t too bad for the final three weeks, he will likely be the NFL of the National Football League. At a minimum, he will come in second with or without the injury. At this point, he deserves to win it.

As for Smith and Cousins, they are both having really nice years on their current teams. Both of their squads have overperformed which is a result of their play but neither of them was as good as Fields.

The situation that Fields is in with the Bears is nothing close to his fault as he is the only reason that they have been in most of these games. The fact that he is a snub from the Pro Bowl is just sad.

As a result of this snub, the Bears are sending absolutely nobody to the Pro Bowl. There will be replacements that play in the game for injuries and for players who are playing in the Super Bowl instead but that doesn’t mean as much as being originally selected.

Fields would probably go if selected under those circumstances but it would be nice for him to just get the respect that he deserves. Maybe that will come when the Bears become relevant again. Hopefully, that comes soon. Fields will be a big part of it all.

Cubs News: This catcher signing is really going to help them in 2023Vincent Pariseon December 22, 2022 at 9:18 pm

The Chicago Cubs no longer have Willson Contreras. He is headed to the St. Louis Cardinals in what is a terrible move from a Chicago Cubs perspective. That is a very hard void to fill for a team looking to improve in 2023 and beyond.

It looked like they were going to trade him during the 2022 season but they decided not to. He went on a little farewell tour around town but ended up staying just so he could leave for nothing. It was a very bizarre move for the Cubs’ front office.

Now, Yan Gomes is expected to be the starting catcher going forward but the Cubs added a little bit of a wrinkle to that idea on Thursday. They signed Tucker Barnhart to a two-year deal with 2024 as a player option. There is a guarantee of 6.5 million but it can get as high as 9.5 million.

This is an amazing move for the Cubs. Gomes may or may not get more playing time but Barnhart is one of the best defensive catchers in the league. He isn’t a very impactful hitter most of the time but his ability to play his position defensively is as good as anyone in the league.

The Chicago Cubs made a great signing on Thursday with Tucker Barnhart.

The pitchers on this team will absolutely love throwing to Barnhart on a regular basis. He is so good at framing and keeping baseballs from getting past him. The entire Cubs team will benefit from having a catcher that can play that well defensively.

Anything that he gives them with his bat will just be an extra bit of goodness that wasn’t expected coming into the season.

The Cubs have shown a commitment to winning in 2023. They may or may not succeed with it but they aren’t signing Barnhart for no reason. If they didn’t think they had a chance at the postseason, they probably would have just saved their money.

When Barnhart plays, it may even be in late-inning defensive situations. With that said, he is sure to get his fair share of starts as well. The Cubs clearly aren’t playing any games when it comes to letting the league know that they are at least trying.

Blackhawks News: Nashville loss at home, Connor Bedard, and moreVincent Pariseon December 22, 2022 at 10:36 pm

The Nashville Predators showed up to the United Center on Wednesday night wearing their Reverse Retro jerseys so the Chicago Blackhawks had to wear their road whites.

It was actually a really cool thing to see as that is very old-school for the NHL. Unless it is a special occasion, you only see the white jerseys at home which is not the way that it always was.

Unfortunately for the Hawks, the game didn’t go very well for them. They had a 2-1 lead in the contest but allowed the Predators to score three unanswered goals to come out with a 4-2 victory.

Nashville is a really good team that can get to another level this season and it showed in this game. Their best players were their best players and that is why the Hawks lost.

With guys like Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews not scoring right now, it is going to be tough to beat teams like Nashville who have studs like Matt Duchene, Roman Josi, and Nino Niederreiter playing at the top of their game.

Connor Bedard:

After this loss to Nashville, however, there is one silver lining. At 7-20-4, the Blackhawks have the worst record in the National Hockey League. If that holds, they will have the best odds of winning the 2023 NHL Draft Lottery.

That would be amazing news for them as it would mean that Connor Bedard is headed to Chicago. This is one of the best players to be the number-one pick since Auston Matthews went to the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2016.

That is saying something too because Jack Hughes, Nico Hischier, and Rasmus Dahlin amongst others have been sensational.

Bedard is going to play with Team Canada at the World Junior Championships next week and he is going to tear it up. In their one pre-tourney game, he went off.

There are four Blackhawks prospects already there for him to play with along with other studs like Shane Wright (Seattle Kraken’s top prospect) and Adam Fantilli (who will be the second overall pick in 2023).

Bedard is a special player and Blackhawks fans might want to start catching a glimpse of him in this tournament. Even if they end up second overall, Fantilli won’t be a bad consolation prize. This is your chance to see them together.

Other NHL News:

The biggest news around the NHL right now is something that Blackhawks fans are familiar with. We know that Ovechkin scored his 800th career goal at the United Center last week.

Now, his next goal will tie Gordie Howe for the second most in NHL history, and then he’ll pass it at 802.

That is truly going to be a special moment in the league’s history as Ovechkin chases down Wayne Gretzky’s total of 894. This is going to be a great time to be a hockey fan as The Great 8 tries to chase down that record.

The league is in such a good spot right now with all of the young talent being combined with some of the legends that are still playing like Ovechkin.

Cubs: Nico Hoerner and Dansby Swanson will make a great duoVincent Pariseon December 23, 2022 at 8:10 pm

The Chicago Cubs have been bad for a couple of years now. They plan on turning things around a bit in 2023 which is possible if they stay healthy and everyone does their job. So far, they have had a solid off-season as there are some impactful players coming to the north side.

The most impactful of them all is Dansby Swanson who the Cubs signed about a week ago. He had a great contract year with the Atlanta Braves in 2022 and now he is being rewarded for it with this very lucrative contract. He will be the new starting shortstop for the Cubs.

Dansby Swanson is a great hitter but he is also going to make a great defensive duo with Nico Hoerner. Hoerner, of course, as a result of the Swanson signing will permanently move from shortstop to second base.

He was a great shortstop for the Cubs in 2021 in his own right but moving him to second is a great move for everyone involved. He is very solid defensively which will be perfect for Swanson as he will be able to do his great work at shortstop.

The Chicago Cubs are in a good spot with the middle of the infield going forward.

Both of these guys have nice bats but their production on defense will be awesome to watch. There are going to be some very interesting double plays turned between these two as not much will get through the two.

Nico Hoerner’s recent reaction to this signing speaks volumes about his maturity. Instead of saying anything against the fact that he has to move to second (a much less popular position than shortstop), he has taken it in stride and even said some very positive things about the situation.

Hoerner clearly understands that baseball is a business of winning and adding Swanson with him moving to second will help them start winning again. After all of the losing that Hoerner has been a part of, 2023 might be refreshing for him if they are actually an improved ball club.

The Cubs have a long way to go still. They could use some upgrades to the corners of their infield but once that happens, the Cubs will be set in this part of their game because this duo is so good.

They Blackhawks should have traded Toews and Kane a while agoVincent Pariseon December 23, 2022 at 9:10 pm

The Chicago Blackhawks are in a tough spot. They go into Friday’s match against the Columbus Blue Jackets with a record of 7-20-4. They are dead last in the NHL in wins (7), points (18), and points percentage (.290). To say it has been tough would be an understatement.

The good thing for them is that it has been by design. General Manager Kyle Davidson sees this as a long-term rebuild that has a goal of sustained success. They want to have a very high draft pick and continue building through the draft.

One mistake that they have made so far is not trading Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane already. They both have no move clauses and a big-time contract but there are ways around it. These two should be on other teams by now.

It is so hard for them to produce at a high level right now because of the team that they play on. It would be hard for anyone to produce at an elite level playing on a team this low on talent. They simply have no help.

The Chicago Blackhawks are in a tough spot with the two legends on their team.

In 31 games played, Patrick Kane has four goals and 18 assists for 22 points. His assist numbers are doing fine but he hasn’t scored as much lately. Again, he has no good playmakers helping him get good chances from good areas.

As for Toews, he is tied with Max Domi for the team lead with 10 goals. He has seven assists for 17 points which is not the usual production that you’d expect from him either. Again, his team doesn’t help him or Kane like they normally have in the past.

However, it does also spark a fear that they are on the decline. If that is true, why would any team give up lots of amazing assets in order to add one of these guys? It would be worth it if a change of scenery elevates their game naturally but nobody can be sure that would be the case.

Davidson should have found a way to move at least one of them (probably Kane because he’d return the most) before this could happen this year. Now, they might not get the return that they thought.

In the case of Kane, his 18 assists on this horrid team should prove that going to another team loaded with great players will get him back to the Kane numbers that we are used to.

Both of them should go before the deadline which will certainly make things interesting. It will also make the Hawks worse which will improve their chances at the number one overall pick and Connor Bedard. After the holidays, it is time to get moving, Kyle.

Chicago Bears: 3 reasons to watch the game vs the Buffalo BillsVincent Pariseon December 24, 2022 at 12:00 pm

The Chicago Bears are taking on the Buffalo Bills for a Christmas Eve matchup between one of the best teams in the NFL and one of the worst teams in the NFL.

The Buffalo Bills are 11-3 with legit aspirations of making it to the Super Bowl. On the flip side, the Chicago Bears are 3-11 and could end up with a top-three pick in the draft.

So the game is going to be close to 0 degrees, the Bears are terrible, and the Bills could blow them away when it comes to the final score.

Why would anyone want to tune into this game if they don’t just love all football in general? Well, if you are a Bears fan, there are plenty of reasons to do it.

There are three really good reasons to watch the Chicago Bears game this week.

1. Competing With Good Teams

The Chicago Bears are a very bad team. However, they have somewhat shown the ability to stay with some of the best teams in the league. They have a win over the San Francisco 49ers and they only lost to the Philadelphia Eagles by five. Those are the two best teams in the NFC.

The third-best team in the NFC is the Minnesota Vikings who the Bears only lost to by seven and they had a lead in the game for most of it.

Now, with another good team on the other side, it will be interesting to see how the Chicago Bears play in this one.

2. Justin Fields

Justin Fields has taken some shots this season because of the fact that he has no offensive line and limited weapons to work with. However, he is the third quarterback in the history of the NFL to reach 1000 rushing yards in a single season which is very impressive.

Fields needs to average 68.8 yards per game the rest of the way to break Lamar Jackson’s single-season record for the most rushing yards in a single season by a quarterback. He is incredibly fun to watch and a reason to watch every single Bears game.

3. Watching the Buffalo Bills

You might not be a Buffalo Bills fan but football is awesome. The Buffalo Bills play football really well. They have one of the best quarterbacks in the world, some amazing receivers, and an awesome defense.

Josh Allen is a treat to watch every single game that he plays. He is right there with Patrick Mahomes and Joe Burrow for the title of the best quarterback in the NFL. The Bears have faced some good ones this year and Allen is right there near the top.

Allen is also someone who can make the Bears feel good about Justin Fields. He fell in his draft a little bit and went behind a few quarterbacks that are significantly worse than him. He also took some time to become elite in the NFL. All of these things also apply to Fields.

This game might not be pretty because of the winter weather but it is still going to be fun to watch for a variety of reasons. We can only hope that Justin Fields plays well but the Bears maintain their current 2023 NFL Draft status.

Chicago Bears are outclassed by another Super Bowl contenderVincent Pariseon December 25, 2022 at 12:00 pm

The Chicago Bears participated in some Christmas Eve football against the Buffalo Bills on Saturday. There was a full NFL slate to kick off the holiday weekend and the Bears were a part of it against one of the best teams in the NFL. This one took place in frigid temperatures.

At 3-11, the Chicago Bears came in with one of the worst records in the NFL. On the contrary, the Buffalo Bills came in at 11-3 which is one of the best records in the league. If the Bills don’t win the Super Bowl later this season, they will be considered one of the league’s failures.

When a team like the Bears faces a team like the Bills, it is always scary for the fans of the lesser team. However, the Bears have played well against a lot of the contenders that they have played this year. They were never going to beat the Bills but it was good to see them keep it close at first.

The Bills eventually outclassed the Bears and won the game by a final score of 35-13. Justin Fields made some plays early in the game but this was certainly not his best performance this season. We have seen him be a lot more dynamic this season but the Bills had a plan for him.

The Chicago Bears lost but they won in the long term of their franchise.

As of right now, the Bears are projected to be making the second overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. That could be franchise-altering for the Bears so seeing them lose again isn’t the worst thing in the world. This is their NFL-leading 8th straight loss.

What is it going to take for the Bears to get into the same realm as the Bills? Well, they need Fields to become as impactful as Josh Allen who is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. Buffalo has also surrounded him with lots of great weapons including an offensive line.

The defense of the Bills is very good as well which certainly helps them win. Their running game has been a weakness this season but that has even been getting better lately. If they can keep it up, a deep playoff run should be ahead of them.

It is a shame that this type of matchup has to go this way but there is light at the end of the tunnel. With how the Bears played against the Philadelphia Eagles last week, it was fair to expect more of that this time around against another Super Bowl contender but Buffalo was too much.

Nw, the Bears have two more games. The first is against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field and then they will close the season at Soldier Field against the Minnesota Vikings. As mentioned before, we can only hope that they play well but continue to help their draft stock.
