Elderly couple seriously injured in Little Italy house fire in Chicago

Two people were seriously injured after a fire broke out in their home early Sunday in the Little Italy neighborhood.

Firefighters responded to a call of a fire about 1:15 a.m. at a two-story building in the 800 block of South Bishop Street, Chicago police said.

When they arrived, firefighters were told there was a person trapped in the basement, who was removed shortly afterward, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

A 77-year-old man was transported in “grave” condition to Stroger Hospital, fire officials said. A woman, 71, suffered smoke inhalation injuries and was taken to the same hospital in serious-to-critical condition.

The cause of the fire wasn’t immediately known.

White Sox: Pedro Grifol’s podcast comments offer hope and angerTim Healeyon January 15, 2023 at 7:51 pm

The new Chicago White Sox manager, Pedro Grifol, recently made some comments on a podcast that should give fans hope about his managerial style — and renewed anger about the lost 2022 season.

Grifol went on the “Baseball Isn’t Boring” podcast and essentially said that the Chicago White Sox will be hard to beat if they play with energy and they didn’t do that about half the time in 2022.

Grifol knows from experience as he was the Kansas City Royals bench coach and the AL Central divisional rivals faced off against the Sox 19 times in 2022. Host Courtney Finnicum asked Grifol what he thought the 2022 White Sox were lacking.

He said they were second to none in terms of talent and then he said that when it came to game planning, it wasn’t so much what can you do to beat them, it’s what type of energy and what type of team is coming out there to play against you that particular day.

The Chicago White Sox clearly had some big issues during the 2022 season.

Grifol did take into account the heavy amount of injuries the 2022 Sox suffered and he touched briefly on his own plans to try to keep this year’s team healthy. Then he pivoted back.

“The energy was a big part of it. I can’t deny that. That’s something I saw from the other side. If the energy was high and they were ready to play that day, you had your hands full, and that’s just the bottom line. If the energy wasn’t high, you can tell from the very beginning. If the energy wasn’t high, then, you know, you obviously had a good chance to win a ball game.”

He then talked about the Sox’s failures when it came to fundamentals.

“There was a lot of times where when we were preparing for them, we were always telling our guys ‘make sure you run the bases hard, make sure you’re thinking an extra base, these guys miss a lot of cutoff guys’. They’re not fundamentally sound when it comes to the details of the game.”

He followed up by saying that in 2021, the Sox were good enough to play through their deficiencies but they weren’t able to do the same when the injury bug struck in 2022.

That’s a tough indictment of former manager Tony La Russa who was supposed to be the kind of old-school manager that would help the Sox improve their fundamentals.

It’s also a bad indictment of the players and Sox fans should hope that those same players are willing to listen to Grifol and improve the fundamentals.

The good news is that Grifol says that Sox brass asked about the 2022 team’s failings when he was interviewed.

The bad news is that Sox reliever Joe Kelly said on the Score earlier this week that liked the previous regime’s strategy of having the Sox sometimes not hustle in order to avoid getting hurt and/or exacerbating existing injuries.

Throughout the podcast, Grifol said the right things about having high energy and the right culture and being better at fundamentals. Let’s hope he’s able to walk the walk.

For now, it’s one more reminder that the 2022 team was such a letdown and that its failures can’t be solely blamed on injuries. Another reminder? The way that the Cleveland Guardians trolled the Sox during their own playoff celebration.

Yes, 2022 is over and it’s time to turn the page. But the Sox can’t move forward until they understand what went wrong last year and how to fix it.

Not to mention that from a pure fan’s perspective, it will be hard to forgive the franchise for blowing a year out of the championship window by hiring the wrong manager.

Fan emotion is one thing. The more important part of that last paragraph, from a performance perspective, is the first part.

Fans should hope the Sox will take Grifol’s message to heart, engage in some self-reflection, and then come out and play to their abilities. If that happens, 2022 might be reframed as a bit of adversity that had to be overcome on the way to success.

Georgia football player, team staffer killed in car wreck after title celebration

Georgia offensive lineman Devin Willock and a recruiting staff member were killed early Sunday in a car wreck, the school said, just hours after the Bulldogs celebrated their second straight national championship with a parade and ceremony.

Two other members of the football program were injured in the crash, which occurred in Athens, south of the Georgia campus. They were not immediately identified, but the school said both were in stable condition.

ESPN reported that another offensive lineman, Warren McLendon, was among the injured. The junior announced Saturday he was entering the NFL Draft.

The single-vehicle wreck occurred at approximately 2:45 a.m., according to a statement from the Athens-Clarke County police department.

The initial investigation found that a Ford Expedition “left the roadway, striking two power poles and several trees,” the statement said.

The 20-year-old Willock was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle, 24-year-old Chandler LeCroy, was transported to a hospital, where she died from her injuries.

LeCroy was a recruiting analyst for the Bulldogs.

On Saturday, Georgia marked its 65-7 rout of TCU in the national championship game with a parade through town and a ceremony at Sanford Stadium.

The joyous mood quickly turned to grief.

“We are all heartbroken and devastated with the loss of Devin Willock and Chandler LeCroy,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said. “Devin was an outstanding young man in every way. He was always smiling, was a great teammate and a joy to coach.”

Smart said LeCroy was “a valuable member of our football staff and brought an incredible attitude and energy every single day. We grieve with their families for this tragic loss and will support them in every way possible.”

Police said the wreck was still under investigation and they have not determined what factors may have contributed to the crash. It may be several days before an accident report is issued.

Willock was a 6-foot-7, 335-pound redshirt sophomore from New Milford, New Jersey.

He played extensively as a backup during the 2022 season and started at right guard in Southeastern Conference victories over Tennessee and Kentucky.

With McClendon and offensive lineman Warren Ericson headed to the NFL Draft, Willock likely would have been competing for a starting position in 2023 as the Bulldogs go for a third straight national title.

Athletic director Josh Brooks said Willock and LeCroy were “two special people” who “meant the world to our football program and athletic department.”

“We will continue to honor their memory in the years to come,” Brooks added.

Police said a 21-year-old male passenger sustained minor injuries and a 26-year-old female passenger sustained serious injuries. “We will continue to monitor their status with medical personnel,” the school said.

Georgia also said its mental health and performance personnel would “make sure we are providing the best support possible for our staff and student-athletes who are processing this grief.”

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey, who spoke at the championship celebration, tweeted that Willock’s death was “incredibly sad news and we join in sharing our sympathies, prayers and support.”

Another Georgia player, linebacker Nolan Smith, said Willock’s death “hurt my heart.”

“All I have to say the GREAT ONES LEAVE (TOO) SOON,” Smith tweeted. “@DevinWillock I LOVE YOU FOREVER.”

A few hours before his death, Willock retweeted a post that showed him taking time with a young Georgia fan at what appeared to a restaurant, even letting the youngster wear his championship ring.

“Special thank u to @DevinWillock for taking time for my grandson when he didn’t have to,” the tweet said. “U went out of ur way to make him feel special and U made his day!! Good luck next year! Go Dawgs!”

Tennessee Titans request former Bears head coach to interview for OC job

The Tennessee Titans need an offensive coordinator

The Tennessee Titans are requesting to interview a former Chicago Bears head coach for their offensive coordinator position. The Titans fired offensive coordinator Todd Downing after the season. Downing had continued to coach the rest of the season after being involved in a DUI arrest following the Titans’ victory over the Green Bay Packers earlier in the season. The Titans’ late-season collapse in the AFC South divisional race created the perfect scapegoat situation for the team to move on from Downing.

According to a report by Pro Football Talk, the Titans are requesting to interview with former Bears head coach Matt Nagy.

Titans request interviews with Eric Bieniemy, Matt Nagy for OC opening. https://t.co/KRtzHjsJd9

Nagy is currently a quarterbacks coach for the Kansas City Chiefs. Before destroying the Bears’ offense with predictable playcalling (Cordarrelle Patterson runs still haunt me) during his four years in Chicago, Nagy was the offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs.

While with the Chiefs allegedly went behind his head coach’s back to give quarterback Patrick Mahomes answers during his pre-draft interview. If Nagy lands the job with the Tennessee Titans, it would be the second NFL stint he’d be in charge of an offense without Andy Reid doing the heavy lifting.

Cubs, Trey Mancini agree to two-year deal: reports

One of the more memorable plays of the 2022 World Series came courtesy of Astros backup first baseman Trey Mancini, who snared a rocket off the bat of Phillies (and former Cubs) slugger Kyle Schwarber down the line in Game 5.

Now the Cubs reportedly are in agreement with Mancini on a two-year deal.

Mancini hit .239 last year, his season split between the Orioles and Astros. He hit 18 home runs, which would have been good for third on the 2022 Cubs.

The Astros traded for his impact bat. But instead, he slumped. In the playoffs, his glove became the story when he made the rally-killing, game-saving play.

He adds a right-handed bat to the Cubs’ first-base mix, which is expected to include veteran Eric Hosmer, whom the Cubs signed to a one-year deal, and power-hitting prospect Matt Mervis. All three also can serve as the designated hitter.

The depth gives the Cubs flexibility in Mervis’ development plan, providing the personnel for him to spend parts of the season racking up more at-bats in Triple-A, if need be.

Cubs manager David Ross and baseball president Jed Hoyer have talked openly this offseason about the opportunity Mervis has in front of him to compete for a roster spot in spring training, which Mervis said Saturday at the Cubs Convention was “exciting.”

“But at the same time, I’m going to approach it how I did during the season and try to wake up every day and have a good day of baseball,” Mervis said.

“I’m not going to put any extra pressure on myself trying to make the team by having a great game in spring training because those guys are smarter than that.”

Blackhawks melt down early in blowout loss to Kraken

The Blackhawks’ sellout Saturday crowd of 20,075 was allowed to enter the United Center four hours before warmups for an in-arena “bar crawl.”

The beer turned out to be necessary.

Once the game began, the sober Hawks delivered easily their most pathetic performance in season full of those, losing 8-5 to the Kraken after surrendering six goals on seven shots in the game’s first 14 minutes.

The Kraken scored five of those goals in a span of 3:41, the third-fastest stretch by a visiting team in NHL history. Starting goalie Petr Mrazek saved one of five shots, becoming just the 11th goalie since 1970 to finish with a save percentage at or below .200 (but above .000), and replacement Alex Stalock promptly allowed goals on the first two shots he faced.

At that point, the intoxicated crowd began giving standing ovations and cheering wildly for every ensuing save, establishing an embarrassing yet comical new low (or high) point in this Hawks season.

The Hawks added a number of meaningless late goals, but still moved back into last place in the NHL at the season’s halfway point thanks to the Blue Jackets’ win over the Red Wings,

Discussions soon

General manager Kyle Davidson said he hasn’t yet met with Patrick Kane — who returned from injury Saturday — and Jonathan Toews to discuss the upcoming March 3 trade deadline, but he expects to do so within a “couple weeks.”

Kane made an interesting comment Saturday that Lukas Reichel is “hopefully…a guy I can play with in the future.”

As far as other trade conversations, Davidson said he’s making “general calls on what we’re looking to do” — and other teams are, too — but specifics aren’t being hashed out.

Sources: Cubs, 1B Mancini agree on 2-year dealon January 15, 2023 at 4:08 am

Veteran free-agent Trey Mancini is in agreement with the Chicago Cubs on a two-year deal, which includes an opt-out clause, sources told ESPN on Saturday night.

Mancini, 30, finished last season with the Houston Astros after a trade from the Baltimore Orioles.

On Nov. 9, less than a week removed from winning the World Series, the Astros declined a $10 million option on Mancini, a first baseman, in favor of a $250,000 buyout.

Mancini was acquired on Aug. 1 from the Orioles in a three-team trade involving the Tampa Bay Rays as the Astros worked to refine their postseason roster. Across the regular season with the Orioles and Astros, he hit .239 with 18 home runs and 63 RBIs.

Earlier this year, the Cubs added another first base and designated hitter option, giving free agent Eric Hosmer a one-year contract.

Chicago will only have to pay Hosmer the minimum salary, a source told ESPN, as he still has three years and $39 million left on a contract he signed with the San Diego Padres back in 2018. He was traded from the Padres to the Boston Red Sox last season, not long after San Diego acquired Juan Soto from the Washington Nationals. Hosmer was released by the Red Sox at the end of the year.

Cubs and Trey Mancini agree to a two-year deal

The Chicago Cubs and slugger Trey Mancini agree to a two-year deal that includes an opt out per Jesse Rogers of ESPN.

The Chicago Cubs continue the free agent spending by signing 1B Trey Mancini to a two-year contract that includes an opt out clause after the first season.

News: Free agent Trey Mancini is in agreement with the Cubs on a 2 year deal which includes an opt out, sources tell ESPN.

After helping the Houston Astros win the World Series in 2022, Mancini is headed to north side of Chicago. Mancini finished the 2022 campaign with a slash line of .239/.319/.391 and posted an OPS of .710 with the Astros and the Baltimore Orioles. Mainly being a DH down the stretch, Mancini adds a veteran right-handed bat the Cubs could switch off with the newly signed Eric Hosmer in the DH/1B spot.

Reports of interest were initially started in December, adding a right-handed bat the Cubs solidify that gap in the lineup that could hit against left handed pitching. The move probably means that prospect Matt Mervis will begin the year in Triple-A to give him more time to develop.

Either way you see it this is a complimentary move for the Cubs, adding more veteran presence to a young team that has a lot of youth coming up the pipeline.
