Cellar Dweller: New Holland 2010 “Milk Stout”

If you’ve read any of my latest Cellar Dweller posts, you know I’m cleaning out the proverbial beer closet. Anything from 2015 or earlier, has come home to roost. I’m starting to learn that most beers aged five years or more fall off, and lose most of their great qualities. There are some exceptions, like the 2015 Might Meets Right I just drank, and the 2015 Frosted Frog. But, this twelve once bottle of 2010 Milk Stout, from New Holland, isn’t one of them.
I like to experiment though, so I decided to push this 6-pack as far as I could, and this was the last bottle. That being said, let’s give credit to New Holland for brewing and bottling a beer that can stand up to a decade of time in a bottle. Was this what Jim Croche was writing about all those years ago?
[embedded content]After 10 long years of sitting on a shelf somewhere, bottled on November 24, 2010, the Milk Stout is still with head retention. There’s a whiff of smokiness in the first sip, uncharacteristic of this beer, at least in my experience.
As I delve into this beer with several more sips, I’m tasting a roasted chocolate maltball flavor, think Whoppers, that dissipates quickly, giving way to stale tobacco. That’s about the time I start thinking I don’t want to finish this beer, when it screams of being left uncovered, underneath a Chicago expressway.
[embedded content]The milky, cereal flavor can’t compete against the sands of time. But, I got a good 6 ounces out of a ten-year-old beer. For that, as Tosh says, “We thank you.”

Now We Know How It Feels to Have a Hearing LossDr. Sheri Gostomelskyon May 4, 2020 at 3:43 pm
Say What?
Now We Know How It Feels to Have a Hearing Loss

The experience of being home has certainly changed the way we live and the way we communicate. Socializing is now done at a distance and is limited at best. Modern technology has provided us the ability to communicate virtually. This wonderful resource certainly has challenges & not everyone has the luxury of connectivity. Video conferencing is far from perfect. The computer screen freezes, the audio gets lost or the sound isn’t loud enough and captions aren’t available.
It’s not just technology that has its problems. Wearing a mask makes conversation difficult as it creates a barrier for understanding speech. Talking through a mask muffles speech and most masks cover the mouth. Whether we were previously conscious of watching lips move and facial expressions, we do rely on these cues when we converse. Add to that a noisy room and multiple people talking. Imagine that. It’s our new reality. And it’s not easy.
Reflecting on the newfound challenges that people with normal hearing are now facing, imagine how someone with hearing loss must feel every day. How frustrating is it when you can’t understand someone speaking through a mask? How does it feel when communication is a struggle?
When we miss parts of a conversation, it’s sometimes difficult to fill in the blanks. When we don’t hear, we may feel left out of the conversation which may lessen our participation. It is certainly a lot easier to sit back and not engage. Looking at the bigger picture, social isolation can lead to increased anxiety and depression.
Hearing loss is not accepted in the same way as a loss of vision. Most people are quite understanding when someone can’t see. A loss of vision is usually obvious. A hearing loss has little if any visibility, and because we can’t see a hearing loss, most people are not as compassionate. I’m hoping that our new experiences will help change that.
In the meantime, keep smiling with your eyes. Speak slowly and distinctly. Be patient. Be kind. We all deserve to be heard.

Forcing our $22 trillion economy into an induced coma; what could possibly go wrong with that, eh?Dennis Byrneon May 4, 2020 at 4:09 pm
The Barbershop: Dennis Byrne, Proprietor
Forcing our $22 trillion economy into an induced coma; what could possibly go wrong with that, eh?
What could go wrong?
More than 30 million Americans fired in just a few weeks, about 18 percent of the American workforce. That’s never happened before so quickly Such a thing was never even imagined.
With trillions of dollars being borrowed in a figurative blink of an eye, the national debt reached at least $24,011,523,316,653, (updated) $24,921,325,976,814 larger than the entire U.S. economy. That’s never happened before so quickly. Such a thing was never even imagined.
The government has ordered hundreds of millions of Americans to imprison themselves at home. That’s never happened before. Such a thing was never even imagined.
Americans have been cowed into unprecedented assaults on their liberties, inconceivable threats to their well-being and crippling indebtedness for generations to come.
Never before have so many Americans been forced to surrender so many of their civil rights, from freedom of worship to freedom of assembly.
This dive into the deep, dark unknown is unlike the coronavirus pandemic. We’ve experienced pandemics and plagues before. We have centuries of history, research and experimentation into the causes, effects and treatments of epidemics. Not so with an entire national and global economy. Not on a scale that risks the social and economic health of 328 million Americans. The shutting down of the economy is, at best, an experiment whose consequences were unknown, if not terrifying.
Throwing caution to the hurricane-force wind, we put ourselves in the hands of people who, with ex cathedra certainty that unless we took this untested, extraordinarily risky path, millions of Americans would die. Forgoing targeted policies learned from previous epidemics, this virus required all the force of a blunt force object.
Yes, COVID-19 is a deadly disease, a world-wide pandemic that requires serious, stringent and painful responses. But the demand for a total nuclear option is no longer just challengeable. It is increasingly becoming an existential threat.

Car Stuff Podcast: Genesis G90, Electrification at Fiat Chrysler

This week’s at-home Consumer Guide Car Stuff Podcats kicks off with the news that General Motors has killed its car-sharing platform called Maven. Similar to something like Zipcar, Maven allowed people to rent vehicles by the hour, and the subscription fee included things such as gasoline and insurance. At its peak, it only ever operated in 17 cities (Chicago was one of them), and it started pulling back in May of 2019. So, while COVID-19 put nails in the coffin, we conclude the service was already on its way out.
The test vehicle this week is the refreshed 2020 Genesis G90 (think big honking diamond-shaped grille). Though I haven’t driven it since the refresh, the G90 has good bones and was an excellent car already. Tom and Damon think this refresh smooth out some of the rough edges. But can it compete with the Euro brands? (Hint: You’ll have to listen for that answer.)
The bulk of our time was spent with Brian Spohn, vehicle electrification manager for FCA North America, who discusses Fiat Chrysler’s various electrification initiatives, including the eTorque mild-hybrid system. He had some truly shocking things to say about the FCA auto stop/start engine system that, if true, may make me a convert.
In all a pretty good episode (even without donuts).
While I will continue to post the podcast to my blog each week, you can subscribe to the Consumer Guide Car Stuff Podcast on any podcast subscription service or visit the Buzzsprout link. New episodes are usually posted on Friday, and then the show itself airs on WCPT 820 AM on Sundays from 1 to 2 p.m.
Be sure to let us know if you have questions or if there are any topics you’d like us to cover on future podcasts.

Thank OpenTheBooks.com for exposing the coronavirus and other money-grabbing
Based in the Chicago area, OpenTheBooks.com is a leading unmasker of how government at all levels wastes your taxes on useless, stinky, misguided and suspect stuff. Its motto is “Every Dime. Online. In Real Time.”
Some of its recent work that the not-for-profit itemized:
- When Illinois asked for a $41.6 billion bailout, it exposed the 109,881 public employees and retirees making $100,000 and more, costing taxpayers $14 billion.
- When the U.S. Senate passed the CARES Act ($2.2 trillion “coronavirus” bailout), its exposure of the bi-partisan corruption was published at Forbes and garnered 510,000 views.

- It exposed the $3.5 billion in U.S. taxpayer payments since 2010 to the World Health Organization.

Retired in Chicago
This and that as we soldier on
I want to believe that the people who are clamoring for a reopening are not all antigovernment right-wingers, despite the protest signs. Some must be among the one in six American workers who have filed for unemployment during the pandemic.
The majority of people who have lost their jobs and still told KFF pollsters that sheltering in place has been worth it are inspiring. It’s one thing for retirees like me to say carry on. My retirement income hasn’t changed. Seniors are afraid of the coronavirus; younger people also fear for their livelihood.
•••••
GIVING SHAPE TO THE DAY
Solitude is not new for people like me who live alone, but having nothing to get me out every day is. I structured my retirement around an outing a day.
I felt restless until I started putting structure into the day — not with a schedule but a to-do list.
Because it feels good to check off items, I put down things I would do anyway, like read the newspaper and call my mother. I may not be accomplishing any more than I would have without a list, but those checkmarks give me a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day.
The lists contain only things that I want to do. I am not pressuring myself to tackle anything for which motivation is weak.
My home isn’t spotless, every closet isn’t purged, and I haven’t tried new recipes. But I have managed to go on as before, cooking a simple, nutritious dinner most days and keeping the place reasonably clean. That’s good enough. This is not the time for comparisons or judging ourselves on productivity.
Since we’re in seclusion, it’s a good time for a retreat of sorts, some people comment. Yet I’ve been less introspective than in the past.
For me, self-examination is mostly triggered by discontent. Because I was fairly content before COVID-19 hit, I want life as it was, not a big change.
•••••
WANTING WHAT I GAVE AWAY
During a February purge of my condo a fitness stepper and two large tote bags of novels, among many other things, went out the door.
Why keep a stepper, I figured, since there’s the building’s fitness room for a rainy day. The fitness room is now closed. On rainy days I skip exercise.
Novels are my favorite reading matter, and I hadn’t read all of those donated, but the Harold Washington Library is less than a mile away. The books I kept were mostly nonfiction that I might want to consult now and then.
The library is closed now and I’m craving novels to read. The generous thing would be to order them from independent bookstores that could go under, but I don’t want to own books I’ll read only once. I also don’t want to read fiction online; I spend enough time looking at a screen. So, I’ve been opening more nonfiction, dipping in to topics instead of reading cover to cover, and it’s been enjoyable.
Luckily, I saved some collections of short stories for when there is time for only a quick read. They’ve been my reading at bedtime, when only fiction will do for me.
•••••
REMINDERS OF WHAT’S MISSING
As isolation goes on I feel less antsy. I must have gotten used to it. Last Monday I was reminded of what’s missing. My neighbors invited me to take a walk on a beautiful morning. Social distancing didn’t hamper conversation. Then a friend and I played Lexulous, an online version of Scrabble. Later I went to the Thompson Center to donate platelets at Vitalent (the former LifeSource) blood bank and enjoyed chatting with friendly staff members.
The boost I felt on an unusually busy day resulted from more than having things to do. Those activities provided companionship, fun, and a chance to do good — human needs that have been neglected during the pandemic.

ANTI-TRUMP COMMENTS: 112TH IN AN ONGOING SERIES
“Under the leadership of Donald Trump, our country is weaker, and sicker, and poorer. . . . If we have another four years like this, will there even be an America?”

Marianne Goss
I retired in August 2015 from Northwestern University after 25 years as an editor in University Relations. I live in the South Loop and am a volunteer Chicago Greeter. Getting the most out of retired life in the big city will be a recurrent theme of this blog, but I consider any topic fair game because the perspective will be that of a retiree.
