Shea Coulee, here to stay and slayCatey Sullivanon June 29, 2020 at 6:40 pm

To describe the driving ethos of Chicago’s drag house Maison Coulee, you need look no further than the Chicago Black Drag Council’s June 20 town hall on racism at Sidetrack specifically and in Boystown in general. It was here that Bambi Banks-Coulee, drag daughter of Maison Coulee’s founding mother Shea Coulee, let Sidetrack know she was done putting up with the racist bullshit that has long been baked into the culture of Chicago’s north side drag bars.

“Sidetrack has been one of the main places where Black drag queens do not feel protected. At all,” Ms. Bambi stated, a storm of real-time comments cheering her on. Like mother, like daughter. Several days earlier, Shea Coulee took the mic at Chicago’s March for Change.

“We are Black, we are queer, and we deserve to take up space,” Coulee told an amped-up crowd. “Somehow I became lucky enough to be somebody who is viewed on TV all around the world and somebody who is considered of value because I’m talented,” the two-time RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant continued. “My value should be strictly based on the fact that I am a human being walking this earth right next to you.” She ended with a call to action.

“Y’all need to hire Black people in your bars. And I’m not just talking about to wipe up your drinks,” Coulee said. In the words of Alexis Mateo of Drag Race, BAM.

By the end of the week, Roscoe’s and Berlin had canned T Rex, a drag queen host accused repeatedly of racism. Sidetrack, meanwhile, verbally committed to hiring more queens of color and putting queens of color in leadership positions at the bar.

So it went in the latest chapter of Maison Coulee Saves the World. Shea Coulee was born Jaren Kyei Merrell. Coulee the drag queen uses “she/her” pronouns. Merrell the person who created Shea uses “they/them.”

“You can use my government name so the people in Plainfield who remember me will know who I am now,” they said. Where they are now is impressive.

In 2017, the self-described “banji-bougie” queen tied for third on season 9 of Drag Race. Coulee’s back for Drag Race All Stars 5, which reaches the halfway mark this Friday when the fifth episode airs. Shockingly early in AS5 (episode two), her competitors declared Coulee was “the one to beat. And on Tuesday, June 30, Coulee hosts A Queer Pride’s Chicago is a Digital Drag Festival, the virtual version of the first and only festival in the city dedicated to drag, which premiered last year. Among the many popular performers showcased via Twitch are the Vixen, Lucy Stoole, and Bambi Banks-Coulee.

Coulee’s meticulously crafted, stunningly imaginative runway looks bolster her competitors’ classification. For Coulee, fashion is a way of addressing social justice issues and elevating Black queens, be it stomping the runway in a skintight, bespangled body suit (for the “Love the Skin You’re In” category) or channeling Queen Nefertiti (season 9 promo look.)

At 31, Coulee has been merging art and activism since grade school. That was when her parents moved to Plainfield, Illinois–a city with a robust history of Klan activity.

“I had relatives who asked my parents were they really sure they wanted to move there. But my dad was able to get a plot of land there, and his dream was to build a house for us,” she said.

As a six-year-old, Merrell understood their standing in Plainfield. “I was the only Black child in my (elementary school),” they recalled. “I remember my parents saying that would be the case, and I was going to walk into these spaces as not just a representative for my family, but for all Black people.

“They were like, ‘You have to be smarter. Your shoes have to be cleaner. You have to be a shining example that is above reproach.’ That was a lot to take in for a little kid, but I always loved a challenge. It pushed me to do really well in school, even though I got in trouble for talking all the time.”

Coulee describes her drag persona as a mix of Naomi Campbell, Grace Jones, and Clair Huxtable. When she performs, she looks to Beyonce and Tina Turner for inspiration. Since earning a degree in costume design from Columbia College in 2011, she’s performed across the country, always with an eye toward honoring her ancestors and making the future better for her drag daughters.

“Me just existing is part of the revolution,” she said. “My grandmother was a housekeeper, on her hands and knees all day scrubbing floors and then on her knees every night praying her children and grandchildren wouldn’t have to do the same thing. My success is just a reflection of all the legwork my ancestors have done.

“I want to be an inspiration and give people hope. I want to amplify Black trans voices. I want to encourage our youth to be actively invested in politics,” she said.

On Drag Race as in IRL, achieving those goals can be fraught.

“It’s weird on Drag Race, because if you do too well, people are like, ‘It’s too easy for them–they haven’t earned it.’ But when you struggle, you could go home. So it’s this double-edged sword. Sometimes I feel like Catherine Zeta-Jones dodging all those laser beams in Entrapment,” she said.

Drag Race started when Obama was president, and we were all like, ‘This is great.’ Then Trump became president and it was like, ‘Oh. Damn.’ This is the time for me to speak up and encourage my fans to get involved politically. Because our survival depends on it.”

In words, deeds, and looks, Coulee puts that survival in the forefront, setting an example for the increasingly legendary children of Maison Coulee and making it impossible for everyone else not to listen.

“Words are a powerful tool. You use them right, and you can cut through a lot of bullshit,” Coulee said. Her strategy for winning AS5 is also rooted in compassion.

“I’m going to be a solid upstanding competitor this entire time. Be kind to people. That’s how I am going to get all the way to the crown,” she said. And if she falls short? Ms. Coulee isn’t going anywhere.

“You can be the sweetest juiciest peach and maybe you’ll meet someone who doesn’t like peaches,” she said. “That’s OK. I’m just going to keep working.” v

A Complete Guide to Phase 4 Chicago Openings: Beaches, Venues, Restaurants & MoreNishat Ahmedon June 29, 2020 at 4:30 pm

We’re about a week into Phase 4 and, as many already know, many businesses are reopening their doors to allow patrons in once more. We’ve covered which drive-in theaters you can catch a film at, the reopening timelines for zoos and the Shedd, and which restaurants are already open for dine-in, but we know there are still questions about what else is opening up during Phase 4, so here’s your complete guide to knowing what’s available to you, including theaters and venues, indoor dining at Chicago restaurants, and possible even beaches.

While the Lakefront Trail has been open for a week now, beaches have officially been closed ever since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. While we don’t have an official opening date still, Dr. Allison Arwady, commissioner of the Chicago Department of Public Health, told FOX 32 that “likely shortly after the Fourth of July holiday is when we will formally be opening the beaches.” The city is working with the Chicago Park District to coordinate the opening, but Arwady also added that reopening of the beaches will only occur if the city continues to make progress against COVID-19.

Though the Lyric Opera and other venues have canceled coming shows or shut their doors completely, Phase 4 sees performance venues that have seating for their guests allowed to open their doors, but those with standing room only are still in talks with the city about how to reopen safely and ensure proper safety guidelines for guests. Venues will only be allowed to seat 50 guests per room, but if a venue has multiple floors or a balcony, the allowance can be increased. Aside from eating and drinking, staff and attendees will be required to wear a mask, with performers being required to wear one while backstage but not while performing.

Movie theaters are also allowed to reopen at a 25-percent capacity or a maximum of 50 people on the theater floor. Certain rows will not be commissioned so as to create a safe distance between attendees, and all staff and attendees will be required to wear masks unless they are eating or drinking. Moviegoers will be encouraged to head straight to their seats after purchasing their tickets and/or concessions. After each screening, the theaters will be intensively cleaned. We should expect staggered screening times as well to reduce congestion and congregation in the lobby before and after showings. Drive-in theaters, meanwhile, have been popping up all over Chicago in their absence.

With the move into Phase 4, outdoor gatherings have now expanded to up to 100 people, which means certain summer camps and youth activities have the ability to start back up. Small scale events will also pop up here and there, but don’t expect large scale gatherings to be back soon. Mayor Lightfoot stated that conventions won’t be happening nor will spectator sports return with audiences.

While the state and city are making progress (which has propelled us into this Phase 4 of restoration faster than anticipated), Governor J. B. Pritzker did warn that case spikes in the state could be grounds for moving back a phase. He stated that “Illinois will not be a state that does nothing in response to a surge.” So, while you’re out there reentering once closed-off spaces, make sure you’re being responsible so all the progress we’ve made doesn’t come undone!

Chicago Fire FC Season Continues for MLS ReturnDrew Krieson June 29, 2020 at 8:23 pm

No one could say when Major League Soccer would return after the league suspended their season back in March. And for fans of the newly branded Chicago Fire FC,  a suspended season meant fans would have to wait to see their team take the field again. The team played only two games before the shutdown and managed to earn one point with a record of 0-1-1. This put the Fire in 7th place in the Eastern Conference, a position they’ll hope to improve upon during the MLS return.

Nearly two weeks ago, the league announced its plans to return to play on July 8 with the ‘MLS is Back Tournament.’ Many players across the league reported to training camp early last month after the announcement was made. As teams begin to head to Orlando, it won’t be long before we see the MLS return. There’s plenty to unpack as the MLS season returns, and we’ve got you covered. Here’s everything you can expect from the Chicago Fire FC as well as how the tournament will play out.

Expectations for the Chicago Fire FC

On July 8th, the MLS returns with the ‘MLS is Back Tournament,’ and the Chicago Fire FC are scheduled to take the field that first day. The team will play against one of the new MLS teams, the Nashville SC, in a night match that will kick off at 9 pm on ESPN. In the first round of the tournament, the Chicago Fire FC will play a total of three games in Group A. All of their games will count towards the MLS season standings when the regular season returns after the tournament. For their next two games, the Fire will play against Inter Miami CF on July 14, and New York City FC on July 19.

Hopefully, the team finds success early and often when the tournament begins. After their games, the top three teams from Group A will advance to the knockout stage which will include 16 teams from the group stage. If the Chicago Fire get off to a hot start, they would only need to string together three wins in a row to advance to the finals. While it’s a lofty goal, it’s definitely not impossible for this squad that has seen plenty of changes after last season. Plus, walking away with the trophy in the ‘MLS is Back Tournament’ would definitely bring a lot of energy to Soldier Field once home games resume.

What Will The Return Of The MLS Look Like?

With Major League Soccer set to return next month, there’s plenty of details regarding the upcoming tournament, and different safety protocols the league will undergo. For starters, the entirety of the tournament will be held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. Similar to the NBA’s plans for basketball to return, players and team staff will be quarantined to the complex in a ‘bubble.’ Anyone within the bubble will not be permitted to leave unless it’s for a medical emergency, and those who do leave will undergo enhanced testing and then quarantine for 10 days. Players are allowed to interact within the bubble as long as they follow social distancing rules. Face coverings will be required at all times on the complex, but they can be removed in personal areas and during meals, practices, and games.

As far as how the MLS is Back Tournament will run, all 26 league teams will take part in the 54-game tournament. In the first round, each team will play three games within their group to determine the standings. In Group A, the Fire’s group, six teams will compete for three spots to advance to the next round. Every other group in the first stage consists of four teams where the top two will move forward. Teams who advance will move onto the knockout rounds next, which will consist of the Round-of-16, Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and a Final match on August 11. Should everything run smoothly in the MLS return, the league hopes to continue the season in home-markets.

Here’s Where to Go Boating in Illinois This SummerAudrey Snyderon June 29, 2020 at 9:11 pm

Table of Contents

Summer in Illinois is officially in full swing, and people are eager to get out and take advantage of the warm weather. There are plenty of ways to be outside with your family (or roommates) while still social distancing — like going to a drive-in movie or hanging out in a park — but, if you’re hoping to spend some time on the water, you can’t just go sit on the beach and take a dip in Lake Michigan as you might ordinarily. You can, however, go boating, and luckily, there are a number of nearby spots that can help you do that.
