The winningest high school basketball programs of the decade: No. 30 New Trieron January 4, 2021 at 4:49 pm

When high school basketball fans think back to the 1980s, programs like Quincy, Providence St. Mel, East St. Louis Lincoln and the arrival of city powers King and Simeon are easy to think back on.

The 1990s brought us memorable basketball giants in Peoria Manual and Thornton, a few steamrolling Proviso East teams and the continued dominance of King.

The first 10 years of the 2000s included Glenbrook North, Peoria High and the beginning of a Simeon juggernaut.

Now, with the calendar inching closer to wrapping up an unforgettable 2020, the end of this month closes out another decade. And it’s another high school basketball time period to look back on.

Earlier this year we broke down the decade’s best teams and best players. Now, with every season of the past decade complete, it’s time to look at the Chicago area programs who won the most.

This list is comprised of the 50 winningest programs over the past 10 years, starting with the 2010-11 season and concluding with the 2019-20 season. Every team in every class throughout the Chicago area will be broken down in a variety of ways. But total wins, with winning percentage used as tie-breaker, determined the rankings.

We present No. 30 New Trier today and will add one program a day going forward.

30. NEW TRIER: 206-92

Decade’s biggest storyline: There have been a lot of wins and some postseason success, but the amount of college basketball players New Trier has churned out this decade has been impressive. Currently, New Trier has 13 former players playing college basketball at all levels.

Underrated highlight: How about a comeback for the ages in one of New Trier’s biggest games of the decade? The Trevians trailed Niles North by 23 points after three quarters before the monumental comeback began. New Trier stormed all the way back for a 77-72 sectional semifinal win in 2018.

Player of the Decade: Connor Boehm (2012)

All-Decade Team: Connor Boehm (2012), Steven Cook (2013), Reid Berman (2013), Sam Silverstein (2019) and Ciaran Brayboy (2019)

Other decade highlights:

-New Trier won five regional championships over the past 10 years, including three straight in 2012, 2013 and 2014, with a sectional title in 2012-13.

-Led by Steven Cook and Reid Berman, New Trier set a school record for wins in that 2012-13 season with 28. The Trevians lost to Simeon in the super-sectional.

-New Trier returned to the Pontiac Holiday Tournament in 2018 after playing in the prestigious tournament from 1949-1958.
