A person died and another was injured in a blaze that ripped through a home Thursday morning in Austin on the West Side.
The fatality was found in the top floor of the two-and-a-half story building in the 500 block of North Lawler Avenue, according to fire department spokesman Larry Langford.
Another man jumped from a second-story window and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition stabilized, Langford and a police spokeswoman said.
Crews were called to the blaze about 9:15 a.m., police said.
The fire was ongoing as of 10:30 a.m., Langford said.
The damage to the building was extensive, but it was too early to determine the fire’s cause, he said.
When high school basketball fans think back to the 1980s, programs like Quincy, Providence St. Mel, East St. Louis Lincoln and the arrival of city powers King and Simeon are easy to think back on.
The 1990s brought us memorable basketball giants in Peoria Manual and Thornton, a few steamrolling Proviso East teams and the continued dominance of King.
The first 10 years of the 2000s included Glenbrook North, Peoria High and the beginning of a Simeon juggernaut.
Earlier this year we broke down the decade’s best teams and best players. Now, with every season of the past decade complete, it’s time to look at the Chicago area programs who won the most.
This list is comprised of the 50 winningest programs over the past 10 years, starting with the 2010-11 season and concluding with the 2019-20 season. Every team in every class throughout the Chicago area will be broken down in a variety of ways. But total wins, with winning percentage used as tie-breaker, determined the rankings.
We present No. 13 Bolingbrook today and will add one program a day going forward.
13. BOLINGBROOK: 220-70
Decade’s biggest storyline: When it comes to the Raiders and the past decade, you take the best season in school history and run with it.The 2016-17 season was pretty magical.
Bolingbrook rolled through the regular season and postseason with regional, sectional and supersectional wins. Coach Rob Brost’s team headed to Peoria with a glitzy 29-1 record and the program’s first-ever trip to the State Finals. The Raiders fell to Simeon in the semifinals and beat Fremd to finish third in the state in Class 4A.
That great Raiders team, which was led by Nana Akenten, Kaleb Thornton, Malik Binns and the sophomore guard tandem of Joseph Yesufu and Tyler Cochran, won 23 consecutive games. They were the No. 1 ranked team in the state at one point and rose to as high as No. 14 in the country in one national poll.
Underrated highlight: The talent Bolingbrook has churned out over the decade is as impressive as any suburban program in the area. The eye-opening list includes 50 players who went on to play college basketball, including a lengthy list of Division I players.
Plus, Ben Moore (2013), who starred at SMU in college, reached the NBA with a cup of coffee with the Indiana Pacers in the 2017-18 season.

Player of the Decade: Ben Moore (2013)
All-Decade Team: Ben Moore (2013), Prentiss Nixon (2015), Tyler Cochran (2019), Joseph Yesufu (2019) and Darius Burford (2020)
Other decade highlights:
-The decade was unlike any other in Bolingbrook basketball history. Prior to the start of the decade, Bolingbrook had enjoyed little postseason success with four regional championships since the school’s initial season in 1974-75. But Bolingbrook emerged as a state power with three sectional championships and two third-place state trophies.
-There were seven 20-plus wins seasons in the past 10 years, the same amount of 20-win seasons in the previous 35 years.
-Bolingbrook won three conference championships in the decade.
-While the run of talent is undeniable at Bolingbrook of late, there has been an impressive run in the classroom as well. Players in the program have earned a team GPA over 3.0 in 21 of the last 22 semesters during this decade.
-The amount of 1,000-point scorers at Bolingbrook is not a lengthy one, but the decade produced four of them: Prentiss Nixon, Joseph Yesufu, Tyler Cochran and Darius Burford. In fact, that foursome ranks third, fourth, fifth and sixth on the all-time scoring list at Bolingbrook behind Trent Jackson and Will Walker.
-The Raiders captured the 2016 Hinsdale Central Holiday Classic championship.

The ChicagoBears should really take notes on the final four quarterbacks remaining.
If the National Football League MVP voting came out and Patrick Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers, Josh Allen, and Tom Brady were the top four, not a single person would be surprised. They are also the final four quarterbacks remaining in the 2020-21 NFL Playoffs. Allen is the only one who hasn’t won the ring yet and his team might be going into this week with the best shot. The Chicago Bears should really watch this weekend and learn how an elite quarterback can change your fortunes.
We have had the misfortune of watching guys like Mike Glennon, Mitchell Trubisky, Chase Daniel, and Nick Foles take snaps for the Bears over the last few seasons. As a result, they have been a lousy team with a lousy offense. Even in the year that they went 12-4, the defense carried them all the way to the end before their kicker ruined it all.
The Bears just won’t get a guy like this overnight but it should be their number one priority before everything else. They were too good (even though they weren’t even that good) to land one of the top guys like Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, or Zach Wilson. There are no game-breaking guys available on the free-agent market either so they just have to keep looking.
Of course, Deshaun Watson is on the trade block. He doesn’t want to play for the Houston Texans anymore but the Bears don’t really have the assets to give up for him. They passed on him (and Mahomes) in favor of Trubisky back in 2017 and they will regret that decision for many decades. He is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL right now and has the talent to be one of those final four standing with a chance to win a Super Bowl.
There have been many teams in the final four over the years and they are almost all led by MVP (top 7-10) level quarterbacks. Guys like Drew Brees, Ben Roethlisberger, Russell Wilson, Cam Newton, and Matt Ryan have all been there recently which proves that it is so important. Until the Bears get themselves someone like that, they are going nowhere.
They do need pieces around that great unnamed quarterback but it would all start and end with him. A good offensive line and weapons are all for not if the man under center is bad. Jay Cutler is statistically the greatest in the history of the Chicago Bears and that tells a lot about how bad they have actually been at the position.
Ryan Pace has missed time and time again on high draft picks and the biggest one of them all was when they traded up a spot to select Trubisky. As long as he is there, nobody should have much faith at all that he will fix the position. There really isn’t any reason to believe anybody will fix it based on the last 50 years but the hope will always remain. The next course of action is cloudy and it will remain cloudy until the quarterback is resolved.
Your employees are the lifeblood of your business. Without their contributions, you wouldn’t have all you do — you owe it to them to repay their hard work with kindness and generosity. Your workforce should expect nothing less.
Here are seven ways to improve your employee morale and keep your core players dedicated and giving their best.
1. Send an Unexpected Gift
Who doesn’t love opening the door or mailbox to an unexpected package? A surprise gift can boost employee morale, but you need to include everyone. You don’t want to risk an uncomfortable situation by singling out only one individual for coffeehouse gift certificates. However, it’s OK to reward an entire department for a spectacular job.
Gifts of flowers or clothing can feel too personal for a work situation, but food is a tried-and-true favorite. Plus, in this age of COVID-19, it’s reassuring to know that no evidence supports the theory that the disease can spread through delivery. This trick works particularly well now with everyone working remotely and perhaps feeling distanced from the workplace.
2. Provide Competitive Wages
You know the industry standard, and you pride yourself on keeping up with the average. However, if you want to attract top talent, don’t fool yourself that they’ll derive long-term satisfaction from a so-so income. Plus, if your workers are worried about paying their rent, they won’t remain 100% focused on the task at hand — no matter how tight a ship you run.
Pay fair wages to all while rewarding those who go above and beyond. Many companies offer quarterly bonuses based on performance metrics — consider implementing a similar process if you don’t currently have one.
3. Ask What Perks They Want
Do you want to put together the ultimate benefits package for your staff? One way to make the perks go further — and improve employee morale — is to customize them.
For example, a gym membership makes an attractive perk for many employees. It keeps people healthier and provides a benefit they may not otherwise pay to access. However, if Barb in accounting prefers working out in her living room, she may never use it. She might appreciate a monthly subscription box full of yarn for her knitting endeavors or various gourmet coffees more.
4. Embrace Virtual Happy Hours
Virtual happy hours took the business world by storm in 2020, but there’s no need to abandon them once vaccines make in-person mixing and mingling safer. Such events are a godsend for employees with chronic illnesses who may lack the requisite spoons to attend an in-person event after-hours. You might find that employees who rarely RSVPd before will attend Zoom sessions.
You can get more people to participate when you make these events entertaining and brief. Plan a game or two that you can play with the crew and implement an end time as well as a starting point. Unlike purely social gatherings, you don’t want employees to feel compelled to stay until closing time for a work-related event.
5. Allow Flexible Scheduling
Today’s schedules were crazy before COVID-19 hit. Now, with ever-changing school and sports events, parents need to make extra arrangements to tend to their little ones.
It’s more crucial than ever to allow a more flexible schedule. Even if you run a client-facing business such as a restaurant or a salon, try to allow sufficient overlap in shifts so it doesn’t create a crisis for one employee if another one arrives a few minutes late or early.
6. Enhance the Office Environment
Would you do your best work if you had to sit in at a hard, plastic elementary school-style desk all day? Probably not, and your employees won’t, either.
When choosing your office furniture, pay attention to ergonomics, and make sure chairs and desks adjust to fit the tallest and shortest workers. Consider options like variable-height desks and inflatable fitness balls as chair alternatives.
Likewise, the clatter of heels on hardwood or tile can deafen your workers if you have a high-ceilinged, warehouse-style office. Look for ways to absorb excess sounds like drop ceilings and carpet. Take advantage of natural light whenever possible. A study from Cornell University shows it cuts headache and eyestrain by 84% — neither condition is conducive to productivity.
7. Invest in Emotional Intelligence
The right team can make or break your business success. However, as much as companies preach the value of emotional intelligence, they spend little time teaching it.
Instead of assuming your team knows what behaviors lead to success, make emotional intelligence training an integral part of their professional development. You’ll soothe interoffice conflicts when all parties know how to address concerns and meet their needs while supporting the team.
Improve Employee Morale With These Tips
Your employees are your business’s’ lifeblood. Show them how much you value their contributions and improve their morale with these tips.
I’m Jerry Partacz, happily married to my wife Julie for over 40 years. I have four children and eleven grandchildren. I’m enjoying retirement after 38 years of teaching. I now have an opportunity to share my thoughts on many things. I’m an incurable optimist. I also love to solve crossword puzzles and to write light verse. It is time for the ChicagoBlackhawks to consider trading Patrick Kane.
The Chicago Blackhawks are an extremely lousy hockey team. Without Jonathan Toews and Kirby Dach in the lineup, it is one of the worst rosters in the history of the organization. They have a top-ten NHL forward, a few very good players, and the rest is a dumpster fire. The goaltending is the worst in the NHL and their team defense in front of them doesn’t help. For that reason, it might be time to think about trading Patrick Kane.
Let me be very clear about something, I believe that Patrick Kane is the best player in the history of the Chicago Blackhawks. He hasn’t yet reached the point totals of Bobby Hull or Stan Mikita yet but it is possible that he does if he finishes his career healthy. However, the fact that he does have over 1000 points and three championships amongst many other prestigious individual awards, he has to be considered the top guy. His number 88 will be retired, he will walk into the Hall of Fame on the first ballot, and they might even build him a statue in Chicago.
With a decorated resume like that, he is naturally a fan favorite. He should be because of the accomplishments but also because of the way he plays. He is as fun to watch play hockey as any player ever. He uses great hands, vision, and hockey sense to make incredible plays in the offensive zone. His transition game is second to none and most of the points (goals or assists) are of the “spectacular” variety.
Because he has all of these things attached to his hockey name, trading him wouldn’t go over well with the fanbase. However, it needs to be done at this point. He has three years (including this season that they are currently in) left on his contract at 10.5 million. A contending team getting a player like Kane for 2.5 seasons is very valuable. He has a hefty cap hit but the Hawks might get even more in return if they retained some salary.
They really don’t have cap trouble like they once did and it doesn’t even really matter right now anyway. They need to rebuild this thing from the ground up and nothing would kick start that better than by trading Kane. The return he would bring the Hawks is second to none. We could be talking top prospects, high draft picks, or a combination of both.
There is no rumor or anything like that but it is clear to me that trading him is the best course of action for the future of this franchise. It is also fair to him to give him a chance to win again while he is still an elite player. He has a lot of good hockey left in him so they should trade him while his value is at his highest.
He is being wasted away on this team now. He has played very well so far and other teams will take full note of that. With each passing year, his value goes down a little bit and makes it harder to get as big of a haul as possible. If they are ever going to do it, they need to do it before the return is insignificant. It can be a big difference for their rebuild.
