5 New Beers Released by Chicagoland Breweries This FebruaryAudrey Snyderon February 5, 2021 at 8:15 pm

Whether you choose to embrace the winter weather by seeking refuge in a dark, warm-flavored ale, or you mentally escape our snowbound environs with a summery, coconut-fueled fantasy, newly-available flavors from Chicagoland breweries offer solace and comfort in a variety of forms. With sour ales, IPAs, and even coffee-infused brews, you’re sure to find something tasty to sip on during the month of February.

Hopewell Brewing Company

Prepare to be dazzled by the stars of Hopewell’s recent double release— Neon: Cherry Lime, a fruity sour ale incorporating Montmorency cherries and lime leaf; and Low Key, a spelt pale ale “brewed with Strata and Loral hops.”

Temperance Beer Co.

Though technically released at the very end of January, Evanston-based Temperance’s new Where I’m From hazy IPA continues to grace the month of February with its presence, specifically benefiting the City of Evanston’s Reparations Fund, which was established “to address, in part, wealth and opportunity gaps that Black Americans experience as a result of historical racism and discrimination.” The new brew itself is infused with delicious notes of vanilla and citrus making it one of these hottest releases from Chicagoland breweries this year.

Off Color Brewing

Along with the return of a couple of other favorites, Off Color has introduced the brand new Well Fed Sheep scotch ale, which combines a heavy malt presence with lighter Star Thistle honey. A welcome addition to the brewery’s menagerie of other excellent concoctions, Well Fed Sheep is sure to keep you feeling warm and fuzzy this month.

Empirical Brewery

Continuing to alter our ideas about great beer on an atomic level, one of Chicagoland favorite breweries, Empirical Brewery has teamed up with Hexe Coffee for the upcoming release of Vibraniyum Coffee Brown Ale. The bold new beer becomes available February 8 in cans and on draft.

Begyle Brewing

Begyle’s upcoming double release introduces the light and fruity When Pineapples Fly sour pineapple ale—with a touch of coconut!—and the Sent with Love hazy IPA, which incorporates not only notes of berry but more coconut! Escape the to more tropical climes with these brews starting February 11.

Illinois, Northwestern reveal 2021 football scheduleson February 5, 2021 at 7:44 pm

Illinois hopes to start its 2021 football season in Ireland as part of the Aer Lingus College Football Classic. Northwestern will remain at home for its first game.

The Big Ten released schedules for the upcoming season on Friday, with the Illini facing Nebraska in Dublin on Aug. 28. The Wildcats open against Michigan State on Sept. 4 at Ryan Field.

The teams face each other for the Land of Lincoln trophy in their annual rivalry game on Nov. 27 in Champaign.

Six Big Ten football games will be played at different sites than originally planned and dates for many matchups have been changed on the revised 2021 conference schedule.

The Big Ten shortened its 2020 season to eight games because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and six games were played at the same location as the previous year. The changes to the 2021 schedule avoid having the same home team three years in a row for those games.

The games with new locations: Michigan State at Indiana on Oct. 16; Wisconsin at Purdue on Oct. 23; Michigan at Michigan State on Oct 30; Purdue at Nebraska on Oct. 30; Indiana at Michigan on Nov. 6; and Nebraska at Wisconsin on Nov. 20.

Two rivalry games were moved back to their traditional spots at the end of the regular season. Iowa plays at Nebraska on Nov. 26 and Wisconsin visits Minnesota on Nov. 27.

Each team’s nine conference opponents remain the same from the original schedule.

San Antonio will host entire NCAA women’s basketball tourneyon February 5, 2021 at 6:03 pm

The San Antonio region will host the entire NCAA women’s basketball tournament.

The move Friday was made to help mitigate the risks of COVID-19 and matches that of the men’s tournament, which the NCAA said last month will be played in the Indianapolis area.

The tournament will still feature 64 teams and will run from March 21 through April 4. The NCAA will use five sites for the opening round, including the University of Texas, which is 80 miles from San Antonio, as a venue.

The Alamodome will host games for every round, with two courts in use at the building. The Sweet 16, Elite Eight and Final Four will be played there as well as the national championship.

No decision has been made yet on whether fans can attend.

“We appreciate the historical significance of moving the entire championship to one region and want to acknowledge the work by the Women’s Basketball Committee and staff, our hosts, local organizers and ESPN that has allowed us to make plans for a successful 2021 championship,” said Lynn Holzman, NCAA vice president of women’s basketball.

“We’re fortunate to be working with San Antonio, which features one of the most experienced local organizing committees in the country, and our No. 1 priority is to focus on creating and implementing safety controls in an environment for student-athletes, coaches, administrators, officials and everyone else associated with the championship.”

While there are usually five days between the second round and the Sweet 16 there will only be four days between games this year.

“Like the 2020-21 season, we know the championship will have its challenges, but we feel we have the necessary structure and safeguards in place to ensure a quality student-athlete championship experience,” said Nina King, senior deputy athletic director and chief of staff at Duke and chair of the Division I Women’s Basketball Committee.

“We appreciate all the work by those in San Antonio and by the NCAA staff to get to this point. We feel certain that one geographic region allows us to focus on the potential benefits of conducting certain safety measures in a controlled environment with competition and practice venues, medical resources and lodging for teams and officials all within close proximity.”

Teams will be limited to a maximum travel party of 34 individuals and will arrive on March 16 and 17. All will stay in hotels in San Antonio or other areas of Bexar County. Practices will take place using nine courts that will be set up in the downtown convention center as well as the two in the Alamodome.

The NCAA will work closely with the local health department in San Antonio to determine medical protocols.

Chicago Lands Two Hotels on U.S. News & World Reports Top 25 Best Hotels Liston February 5, 2021 at 5:44 pm

Chicago is home to not one, but two of the best hotels in the entire United States. Per the U.S. News & World Report’s annual list of the 25 best hotels in the United States, The Peninsula Chicago ranks third and The Langham, Chicago ranks fifth. So, we’ll see your Top 25 and raise you two in the Top 5.

The two hold steady high on the list after their 2020 appearances saw them rank second and third. If you’ve been inside either hotel then you know exactly why they rank where they rank. If not, just walk by on the sidewalk and be prepared to be washed over with a breeze of affluence and prestige from along Wabash or Superior.

The best hotels list, which is in its eleventh year, takes a look at more than 30,000 luxury hotels and resorts around the United States, Europe, and more. Their rating system and description can be seen here, but basically, it takes into account guest reviews, ratings, and other industry awards. The top accolade in 2021 went to the Four Seasons Resort Lanai in Hawaii. Other Chicago properties such as Four Seasons Hotel Chicago (27), Trump International Hotel & Tower (41), Waldorf Astoria Chicago (101), Thompson Chicago (165), and The Ritz-Carlton Chicago (209) were also featured.

After a tumultuous 2020 for the hospitality industry, The Peninsula and The Langham holding strong in the top five is a true testament to the hotel’s management and staff. The Peninsula Chicago’s RVP and General Manager Maria Razumich-Zec said in a statement (via The Chicago Tribune), “As the hotel celebrates our 20th anniversary this year, we reflect and are grateful to be an integral part of Chicago life, creating lasting memories for our guests. … This recognition is also an endorsement for Chicago as a premier destination for local, regional, and global travelers.”

I personally have never stayed at either hotel. I have attended a wedding at The Peninsula before and I did get drinks at The Langham once so I guess you could say that I run in pretty exclusive circles. The basis of telling you this is for nothing more than to say that I have, and the pandemic has me longing for more occasions at super nice places that I cannot really afford. Thus is life, though.

The Langham, Chicago is at 330 N Wabash Ave, Chicago, IL, 60611 and The Peninsula is at 108 E Superior St, Chicago, IL, 60611. If you’re looking for info and pricing about either hotel, utilize the links for more.
