11 people displaced in Evanston apartment fireon February 20, 2021 at 10:07 am

Eleven people were displaced after a fire broke out in an apartment kitchen Friday evening in suburban Evanston.

The blaze began about 7:40 p.m. at a building in the 2100 block of Howard Street, according to the Evanston Fire Department.

All occupants of the building were able to evacuate before fire crews arrived without any incidents, officials said.

Crews were able to contain the fire to the kitchen area, where it began, and extinguish the blaze within about 30 minutes of arrival, officials said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The plan tonight was simple. See two Super 25 caliber teams and get a look at two All-Area candidates at the same time. It’s a short season and every night is valuable.

Well, the plan didn’t go too well. Waubonsie Valley wiped the floor with Neuqua Valley. Ben Schwieger played well, but the Warriors didn’t have to rely on him for much. Everyone on the team was red-hot from three-point range.

It was the opposite for John Poulakidas and Neuqua Valley. This is a game they will want to forget about.

Neuqua Valley plays DeKalb on Tuesday. The Barbs, which recently entered the Sun-Times’ coverage area after joining the DuPage Valley, are 9-0. That is quite a start to the season.

Eddie Carifio covered DeKalb’s win against Naperville Central tonight. Add another school to the list of teams I need to get out and see.

Friday’s top games

No. 6 DePaul Prep 69, St. Ignatius 38: Very solid margin here for the Rams, who appear to be living up to their lofty ranking so far this season. TY Johnson scored 26 and Rasheed Bello added 13.

No. 10 St. Patrick 73, Joliet Catholic 28: The Shamrocks bounce back behind Caleb Corro’s 22 points. Michael Hamilton had a big night with 15 points and 14 rebounds.

Lockport 60, Lincoln-Way East 44: Matas Deksnys scored a career-high 26 points. He could be one of the season’s breakout seniors. Khari Carpenter gave the Porters big moments off the bench. Lockport was at home but this is an impressive win.

Morton 60, Hinsdale South 58 OT: Jesus Perez is a heck of a high school basketball player. I learned that too late in the season last year. He scored 23 tonight and Josh Dowdell added 12 points. Two sophomores, Dakari Durham and Victor Garrett, combined for 19.

Barrington 52, No. 24 Fremd 42: A reader sent me a message about Barrington earlier today, mentioning they were for real. Looks like it. Damian Zivak scored 17 points and Will Grudzinski added 14. Eli Schoffstall led the Vikings with 21.

No. 4 Mundelein 70, Round Lake 48: The Mustangs keep rolling. Conor Enright scored 21 points and dished off 12 assists. Scottie Ebube continued his tear with 14 points and 15 rebounds.

No. 14 Rolling Meadows 74, Hersey 69: The Mustangs were down by 13 late in the third quarter but pulled out a big conference win. Max Christie scored 33 and Cam Christie had 21. Ethan Roberts led Hersey with 20.

Andrew 70, Lincoln-Way Central 58: Huge game for Jolo Amoranto with 29 points. Michael Bobber grabbed 15 boards. The Thunderbolts are 3-1.

Lemont 65, Oak Forest 53: Nojus Indrusaitis scored a career-high 21 and Rokas Castillo added 16. Even a huge night from Robbie Avila (30 points, 16 rebounds) couldn’t stop Lemont.

Downers Grove North 50, Oak Park 44: That’s a 4-0 start for Downers Grove North. All of a sudden there are a ton of new candidates for the Super 25.

No. 2 Young 68, Taft 41: Fenwick transfer Daniel Johnson led the way with 13 points and Jaeshon Thomas scored 10 in the Dolphins’ debut. Sophomore Jewgrante Abraham led Taft with 11.

Many schools livestream games on the NFHS Network, which often charges fans to watch. However, several local schools stream games on their own that are free to watch. Some schools do all the games, some just home games and some select games.

If your school streams games, please send a link to the channel or home page to [email protected]. Here’s a list of all the schools that have submitted links so far.

Marshall’s girls basketball team and coach Dorothy Gaters opt out of seasonon February 19, 2021 at 10:49 pm

There’s hardly a place Dorothy Gaters would rather be than in the gym, coaching another group of Marshall girls basketball players.

But when the Public League season gets underway, Gaters and the Commandos will be on the sideline.

Gaters, the state’s winningest basketball coach (boys or girls) with 1,155 victories in 45 years, has opted out of the season.

“I’m definitely going to miss it,” Gaters said. “All of my adult life has been spent coaching in some form or another. But with this pandemic, you have to get used to a lot of things.”

Gaters said the decision to not play this season was not made without careful thought.

“I listened to the reports,” she said. “I see all the professional teams and the college teams are having a heck of a time trying to keep their athletes safe. (And) we don’t have the protocols they have. …

“Everything told me, don’t even try.”

This would have been a rebuilding season for the Commandos, who graduated nine players from a 22-11 team that finished second in Class 2A. It was Gaters’ fourth state runner-up trophy to go along with 10 titles, five thirds and two fourths.

She’s looking forward to getting back to competition later this year.

“I’m optimistic that next season will be better and safer,” she said. “A lot more is being known about this disease, Things will be a lot better.”

Gaters won’t be stepping away from the game entirely. As Marshall’s athletic director, she’s working with the Commando boys program, which will be playing.

And she’s still watching plenty of games on TV.

“I can’t stay away from that,” Gaters said. “I watch a lot of basketball. It’s always good to pick up new things.”

Some definite appointment TV will be Sky games now that former Naperville Central star Candace Parker has joined her hometown WNBA team.

“I’m so glad for the city of Chicago and for Candace,” Gaters said. “We played her team when she was in high school. She’s always been such a nice young lady and so talented.”

Fans will be allowed at NCAA men’s and women’s basketball tournament gameson February 19, 2021 at 9:57 pm

INDIANAPOLIS — The NCAA will allow a limited number of fans to attend all rounds of its men’s basketball tournament in Indiana and later rounds of its women’s tournament in Texas.

The governing body said Friday it is permitting 25% capacity at the men’s tournament venues to allow for social distancing. That figure will include all participants and essential staff along with the family members of team players and coaches.

On the women’s side, the NCAA will allow a capacity of up to 17% at each venue from the Sweet 16 to the Final Four. Games taking place for the first two rounds will limit attendance to team guests.

In each case, attendees must wear face coverings, while cleaning and disinfecting efforts will be emphasized at venues in keeping with COVID-19 safety protocols. The NCAA said it acted in conjunction with local health officials for each tournament.

NCAA chief medical officer Brian Hainline said the decision for the men’s tournament also followed conversations with the organization’s medical advisory group and will rely on testing and monitoring services from the Indiana University Health system.

“The No. 1 priority for decisions around the tournament continues to be the safety and well-being of everyone participating in the event,” Hainline said.

The NCAA had previously announced the 68-team tournament will be played entirely in Indiana because of the pandemic, with most games in Indianapolis. The tournament will begin with First Four games on March 18 at home arenas for Big Ten Conference schools Purdue and Indiana, with those venues located about a one-hour drive — in opposite directions — from downtown Indianapolis.

At Indiana, the school said it will allow up to 500 fans for tournament games at Assembly Hall with some seats reserved for local medical workers and first responders who have been vaccinated.

The Final Four takes place in Indianapolis on April 3. The national championship game follows two days later.

For the women, the 64-team tournament is being held in the San Antonio region, with first-round games beginning March 21. The Final Four will be held in the Alamodome in San Antonio on April 2, followed by the national championship game on April 4.
