Gonzaga received 60 first-place votes from a media panel on Monday and Baylor had the other four, with the Bulldogs picking up one vote from the Bears.

Michigan, Ohio State and Illinois rounded out the top five. The Buckeyes held their spot despite losing 92-87 to the Wolverines on Sunday.

Loyola moved up a spot to No. 21.

No. 12 Houston dropped six spots after losing to Wichita State and No. 15 Virginia lost eight spots following losses to No. 11 Florida State and Duke.

Weekend rewind: Thoughts from a busy weekend of high school basketballon February 22, 2021 at 3:48 pm

You can’t start talking about this past weekend without talking about what will likely go down as the game of the year. It’s going to be difficult to top what went down Saturday night in Oak Park.

Notre Dame and Fenwick, a pair of highly-ranked teams, went to overtime where Louis Lesmond ended it in unbelievable fashion. With the game tied, Lesmond grabbed a defensive rebound with just a few seconds left, took two dribbles and let it fly from about 55 feet. Game over.

Behind Lesmond’s 35 points and heroic shot, Notre Dame walked out of Fenwick with a 71-68 win in overtime.

Might the 6-5 Harvard-bound senior have added his name to legitimate Player of the Year contenders?

It was always going to be difficult for any Notre Dame player to be in the conversation. The trio of Lesmond, Troy D’Amico and Anthony Sayles are too balanced, share the wealth and are very efficient in their smaller number of shot attempts.

Yes, Fenwick dropped its first game of the season in heartbreaking fashion to Notre Dame. The good news, however, is that junior David Gieser is back from injury.

The 6-2 Gieser is a floor-spacing shooter who was huge in the comeback against Notre Dame Saturday night with monster three-pointers. And it’s exactly the type of player the Friars need to surround star Bryce Hopkins with in the second half of this abbreviated season.

DePaul Prep impresses

Watching DePaul on Friday night was a reminder that coach Tom Kleinschmidt is really good at his job.

Yes, there is the building of the program into what is now a perennial power in the Catholic League. That goes without saying and stands out. But from a basketball standpoint it’s about utilizing the talent he has at his disposal each year.

There was to be some ragged play after having played just one game thus far when it squared off with St. Ignatius Friday night. But in addition to turning defense into offense — this program will always be defensive-minded first — Kleinschmidt allows both TY Johnson and Rasheed Bello to create, play more downhill and forces defenses to pick their poison in coverages.

There is less of a grind offensively.

In a normal year, this team is a legitimate Class 3A state title contender with its combination of versatile firepower and the defense it plays.

John Poulakidas bounces back

The Neuqua Valley performance against Waubonsie Valley on Friday was startling — and one to forget for the Wildcats. Neuqua fell behind its rival early, trailing 40-11 at the half, before eventually losing 70-28.

But they bounced back with a convincing win over a previously unbeaten Burlington Central team on Saturday.

The signature moment of the weekend, however, came on John Poulakidas’ third basket of the game in the win over the Rockets. The 6-5 senior surpassed 1,300 career points and became the all-time leading scorer in Neuqua Valley history.

Neuqua Valley's John Poulakidas (32) drives down the lane as Waubonsie Valley's Ben Schweiger (3) defends.

Many would have thought the program’s greatest player, Dwayne Evans, who went on to star collegiately at Saint Louis, would have been the all-time leading scorer at Neuqua. But it was Keelan Amelianovich who Poulakidas passed. Amelianovich had an All-American career at the Division III level playing at Illinois Wesleyan.

Fortunately this shortened season didn’t derail what was going to be an obvious milestone for Poulakidas, who is headed to Yale next season.

Andrew is dangerous

Always pesky Andrew, where coach Dave Wilson has done an outstanding job keeping that program competitive, was back at being pesky again this past weekend. The Thunderbolts handed Bolingbrook its first loss of the season with a 52-45 win on the road.

Andrew, led by Jolo Amoranto, is now on top of the Southwest Suburban Red. It was 28 years since the last time Andrew won a conference title when Wilson’s Thunderbolts broke through with a league title in 2018. Now they’re on the verge again.

Amoranto, the little lefty who is averaging 20 points a game, is a fun player to watch and a nice small college basketball prospect.

Josh Harris hits 1,000

Saturday’s win over Westmont was a memorable night at Timothy Christian where senior Josh Harris, who is headed to Division III Illinois College, scored his 1,000th career point. Plus, junior Ben Vander Wal threw down an eye-popping baseline dunk. If you get a chance, check out his baseline dunk on social media.

Naperville North turns it around

A little rocky 1-3 start to the season for Naperville North turned positive very quickly this past week, beating rival Naperville Central 57-49 and handing neighboring Benet its first loss of the season, 43-30.

I Went on a Zoom Date With a ‘Bachelorette’ Contestanton February 22, 2021 at 4:40 pm

It takes a lot these days to get me to wash my hair and put on a bra. A Zoom “date” with The Bachelorette castoff Kenny Braasch, in fact. If you’ve kept up with season 16’s stars Clare and Tayshia and their respective journeys to coveted Neil Lane sparklers, then you already know that Kenny is the hard-bodied, generously tattooed boy-band manager and nude model from Oak Lawn who competed for both of their hearts, only to return home to Chicago’s COVID-addled dating scene, single once again.

A couple of days before our date, Kenny follows me on Instagram, which is how I know things are getting serious. I follow him back and land on a video of him in his underwear. Inexplicably, Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up” is the soundtrack to a slow zoom into and out from Kenny’s rock-hard abs until — BAM! — he punches the camera. This performative masculinity reminds me of a wild night I spent in Las Vegas at Magic Mike Live. It’s hard to believe that Kenny and I have much in common, and that with hobbies like knitting, reading, and podcasting about the ’80s YA series Sweet Valley High, I’m the single mom Kenny’s been looking for. But then I remember the thrill of the Magic Mike dancers humping the floor with butts so tight you could bounce quarters off them and think, Why not jump into the Kenny Braasch fantasy? It’s gotta be better than another hour of Bridgerton.

What is the etiquette for a Zoom date? Who sends the link? Well, I do, and he responds with a :). For a moment I wonder if he’ll do something cute, like send me a bottle of wine to drink during our Zoom, but then I remember this is not a TV show; this is just real life, where the effort single men spend on romance is akin to putting on flip-flops — there’s no unnecessary exertion, no flare, and it exposes an ugly part of them. And I adjust my expectations.

Time for the important stuff: What should I wear? (A black V-neck sweater with sweatpants.) What is my Cher Horowitz–inspired lighting scheme? (A cheap ring light sent to me as a holiday gift from my employer.) What am I drinking? (Sparkling rosé.) Now it’s time to log on, and there’s Kenny on my laptop, very handsome, with a great smile. We launch into standard first-date protocol — where are you from, what do you do, tell me about The Bachelorette.

But Kenny really comes alive when we talk about his exercise and nutrition routine. Kenny works out every morning with his parents, Ken and Judy, and brings a potato with him to the gym. I find this all very endearing and decide clearly Kenny needs a vegan fitness influencer, not me, for his wife. “But I eat meat,” he protests. Oh, Kenny, I’m not a fortuneteller, but I’m certain if you ever take a wife, she will be a Revolve-clad wellness enthusiast with tasteful (hopefully) lip fillers. When we briefly touch upon his nude modeling photos (easily available through Google, hint, hint), he says sheepishly, “Women give me shit about it; gay men seem to like it,” and I come to the conclusion that Kenny is a catch. Self-reflective, hard-bodied, can microwave a potato for you — what more could a girl want?

Chris Finch replaces Ryan Saunders as Timberwolves coachTim Reynolds | Associated Presson February 22, 2021 at 3:39 pm

At 7-24, Minnesota has the league’s worst record this season and already is 7 1/2 games out of what would be the final play-in spot for the Western Conference postseason.

Chris Finch is the new coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves, the team announced Monday after dismissing Ryan Saunders the previous night.

Saunders was fired Sunday after the team with the NBA’s worst record this season lost for the eighth time in the last nine games. The team quickly hired Finch, who was in his first season as an assistant with the Toronto Raptors.

“Chris brings a wealth of basketball experience from his time in the NBA, G League and Internationally,” Timberwolves President of Basketball Operations Gersson Rosas said. “He is one of the most creative basketball minds in the NBA, has success maximizing players, and I am excited to see him bring our team to the next level and beyond.”

At 7-24, Minnesota has the league’s worst record this season and already is 7 1/2 games out of what would be the final play-in spot for the Western Conference postseason. The Timberwolves next play on Tuesday, visiting Milwaukee.

“We would like to thank Ryan for his time and commitment to the Timberwolves organization and wish him the best in the future,” Rosas said. “These are difficult decisions to make, however this change is in the best interest of the organization’s short and long-term goals.”

It had been a wildly disappointing season for the Timberwolves, who started 2-0 and haven’t had much to savor since. Karl-Anthony Towns, the team’s best player, dislocated his left wrist in the season’s second game and missed six games — then returned and missed 13 more after being diagnosed with COVID-19.

D’Angelo Russell, the other key piece for the Timberwolves, had surgery last week on his left knee and may be out until April.

There was no sign that the Timberwolves had stopped playing for Saunders; they were down by 21 points in the third quarter at New York earlier Sunday, then took the lead in the final minutes before falling 103-99.

“Unfortunately we ran out of time,” Saunders said after that loss.

He was talking about the game.

Before long, that sentence had a very different meaning.

Finch has history with Rosas, as they both worked together with the Houston Rockets. He coached the team’s affiliate in what is now called the G League, winning a championship with Rio Grande Valley, then became a Rockets assistant. He went on to have assistant jobs in Denver and New Orleans and was hired by the Raptors in November.

“I look forward to working hand and hand with Gersson to build and lead a team that Timberwolves fans will be proud of,” Rosas said. “We have excellent pieces in place and I can’t wait to get to work.”

Saunders, the 34-year-old son of longtime Minnesota coach Flip Saunders, was with the Timberwolves for parts of three seasons, going 43-94. Flip Saunders died in 2015.

Dismissing Saunders was the first coaching change in the league since this season began. There were nine coaches in new jobs entering this season.

Just a few games away from the midway point in the season, many are wondering what the Chicago Bulls plan to do at the trade deadline. At 14-16, the Bulls are currently sitting in the 9th seed in the Eastern Conference. They are only one game back of the Charlotte Hornets in the 8th seed. […]
