Chicago multi-instrumentalist Alex Cowling evokes the power of the great outdoors with AntarcticaLeor Galilon February 26, 2021 at 9:00 pm

Over the past few years, Chicago multi-instrumentalist Alex Cowling has released several solo albums that combine weather-beaten indie rock, spacious jazz, and easygoing folk, and he’s done it to little or no fanfare. When I ask him about the new Antarctica, he tells me that one of the few people who’s listened to it is his aunt.…Read More

Joc Pederson trying to shake platoon label in fresh start with the CubsRussell Dorseyon February 27, 2021 at 8:28 pm

John Antonoff/Chicago Sun-Times

Pederson has a career .576 OPS against left-handed pitching, but the Cubs are going to give him a chance to play everyday.

MESA, Ariz. – Joc Pederson wants to shed some of the labels attached to him after seven seasons with the Dodgers.

There weren’t many teams that would allow him to do that going into free agency during the offseason, but after looking over some rosters late one night, the Cubs looked like a hand-in-glove fit.

Following the departure of Kyle Schwarber, the Cubs had an opening in their outfield, and after an increase in the team’s budget, they signed Pederson to a one-year, $7 million deal to be the Cubs’ primary left fielder.

Pederson, 28, had other multi-year deals on the table, but the Cubs were the only team that would give him a chance to be an everyday player. Now that he has that opportunity, the rest will be up to him.

“I know what type of player I am, and just getting opportunities is just going to be good for me,” Pederson said. “I guess you could say, I got to prove some stuff to them. But it’s like, I’m not out to prove it for anybody, but myself. Like I know what I can do and I’m not gonna add pressure like, ‘I gotta do this for you or them.’ It’s like, ‘No, I know what type of player I am, and to get the opportunities, it’s going to be fun, and it’s gonna be a fun year in Chicago.”

During Pederson’s tenure with the Dodgers, he was used as strictly a platoon player, and it’s hard to argue with the logic of using him that way. Pederson has crushed right-handed pitching with a career .849 OPS in over 2100 plate appearances, but the numbers against southpaws aren’t as pretty as the .576 OPS against left-handers shows.

“We’re gonna try to get him as many at-bats as we can against left-handed pitching, and he wants that. He’s hungry for that, and then just try to eyeball it,” manager David Ross said. “He’s gonna have to put up the numbers, but also watch the bats. Watch those moments when it may be, or try to identify from my seat, in our seat as as a group of what matchup may be tough left on left, and maybe that’s the day he gets days off or comes off the bench.

“But for the most part, I want to be able to give him the freedom to go out there and be himself and right versus left. And you know, we’ll have some moments where we’ll find out and then we’ll have conversations if it was not working out. But I have a ton of belief in Joc and where he’s at right now, so we’ll see.”

There’s a dramatic difference in sample size in the at-bats against right-handed and left-handed pitching, but after seven seasons, that sample size isn’t small anymore in either regard. But the goal for the Cubs this spring has been getting Pederson ample reps in live batting practice and in the cage to make the transition on the field easier.

“I think you’re looking at what his preparation is like to get those opportunities,” hitting coach Anthony Iapoce said. “Because everybody can say, ‘I’m not getting an opportunity here or I’ve been platooning,’ but the work that he’s been putting in now. You see that he wants it. He wants to try and seize that opportunity. Not just that he’s working hard, but really being proactive in his cage work and what he wants to do off of lefties, off of righties.”

If Pederson struggles against lefties, the Cubs have other bench options against left-handers, including Jake Marisnick and Cameron Maybin. But after talking with his manager this offseason, he knows that he’ll have to perform to keep those opportunities coming.

“He was basically saying, ‘Hey, I’m gonna pencil you in there every day and if we come to July and you’re not cutting it and you’re hitting .150 against lefties, we’re still here to win ball games,’” Pederson said. “And I said, ‘Absolutely.’ I’m not looking for anything guaranteed. I just wanted to have a real opportunity. … I trusted him and I think he’s trusting me.”

Willson Contreras unbothered by being included in Cubs’ offseason trade rumorsRussell Dorseyon February 27, 2021 at 10:01 pm

John Antonoff/Chicago Sun-Times

Contreras’ name was thrown around during the offseason as possibly being on the move.

If you played for the Cubs last season and you were going to be under contract in 2021, there’s a high probability that your name was going to be in a trade rumor.

Catcher Willson Contreras wasn’t immune from those rumors during the offseason, but the two-time All-Star says he isn’t fazed by hearing his name come up as a possible trade target.

“Those rumors didn’t bother me. It’s the other way [around],” Contreras said. “Those who make me proud because [of] everything that I’ve done to be where I’m at. Immensely proud. I wasn’t like, bothered at all, I was just kinda going through it relaxed, because if I got traded, I know that I’m ready to play anywhere and everywhere. So that didn’t bother me. I’m in a spot where those types of things don’t bother me.”

After the rumors were floated on Twitter, Contreras took to his social media and fired off a few sarcastic tweets regarding the rumors.

COMPETE COMPETE AND COMPETE

— Willson Contreras (@WContreras40) January 19, 2021

“That’s what [social] media is all about,” he said. “I know a few reporters were trying to make something out of [nothing]. But that’s what [social] media is all about. Just to have fun and do whatever you need to do with it.”

Pedro Strop officially in Cubs camp

The Cubs made the signing of right-hander Pedro Strop official on Saturday and the longtime Cubs reliever took part in his first workout with the team. Strop, 35, signed a minor-league deal last week with an invite to spring training.

“We’re glad to have him here. We’re hoping he’ll be able to get out there and perform here real soon,” manager David Ross said. “It’s nice just to have him back walking around the clubhouse. It just … I don’t know, makes me smile, makes me happy to see him. I think it makes a lot of guys happy.”

Kyle Ryan taking part in baseball activities, still on COVID-19 list

Left-hander Kyle Ryan participated in the Cubs’ morning workout on Saturday. Ryan was placed on the team’s COVID-19 list on Feb. 17. According to MLB health and safety protocols, players who have tested positive or have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive must isolate for 10 days and can be cleared once they are deemed to no longer present a risk of infection to others.

Once Ryan is removed, the Cubs would have to make a corresponding move to make room for him on the 40-man roster.

He said it

“It’s just a mental team identity. I think that we kind of collectively did something together and worked on [our defense] as a group. I think it really kind of tied all that together.” – David Bote on Cubs’ defensive improvements in 2020

Blackhawks’ defensive logjam sends Nicolas Beaudin to AHL, boosts competition for othersBen Popeon February 27, 2021 at 10:46 pm

“You know where you stand in the group, and you know if there are guys who are quality who aren’t playing,” coach Jeremy Colliton said Saturday. “It keeps you sharper.”

Nicolas Beaudin exceeded expectations in his first real NHL stint.

Yet Beaudin was assigned to the AHL on Friday, a temporary casualty of the Blackhawks’ ideal problem: too many decent defensemen.

Between veterans Duncan Keith, Connor Murphy, Calvin de Haan and Nikita Zadorov, youngsters Beaudin, Ian Mitchell, Adam Boqvist, Lucas Carlsson and Wyatt Kalynuk and experienced depth option Madison Bowey, the Hawks own 10 defensemen with strong arguments why they should be in the NHL lineup.

Even with Carlsson currently injured, that logjam inevitably leaves out a few guys at any given time, and only Bowey is a relatively easy choice to scratch.

For this five-game homestand, the unfortunate victim seems to be Beaudin. He was part of a big shuffle Friday that saw neglected goaltender Collin Delia given an AHL conditioning stint (allowing him to avoid waivers), Kalynuk and Reese Johnson also sent down and Brad Morrison and Mikael Hakkarainen called up to the taxi squad.

But coach Jeremy Colliton believes playing temporarily handling a big role in the AHL could benefit Beaudin — as well as Kalynuk, who has yet to make his NHL debut but deserves a shot soon — almost as much as more NHL time would.

“We’re really happy with those guys, but we want them to continue their development,” Colliton said Saturday. “If they’re not playing with us and they can play…23 to 24 [minutes in the AHL], that’s a great opportunity for us and for them to keep building, keep improving and growing in confidence.”

Colliton used a similarly positive tone when personally addressing Beaudin, who tallied five points during 11 NHL games despite a subpar 43.3% scoring chance ratio.

“We’re happy with him, [and] we delivered that message to him,” Colliton said. “There are no negatives. We’re excited about the progression he has made already. These games in Rockford, however many it ends up being, he has to treat as an opportunity.”

Hawks management has harped all season about how the overcrowded defensive corps, and the resulting intense competition, should push everyone to improve.

Earlier this season, that Darwinist approach wasn’t as cutthroat as suggested because of absences to Murphy (hip injury) and Boqvist (COVID-19) plus Colliton’s frequent decisions to dress seven defensemen and 11 forwards.

The competition intensity is increasing, though. Colliton said Saturday that “the right thing for the team now is to go 12 [forwards] and six [defensemen],” eliminating that extra spot.

And Beaudin’s demotion serves as an eye-opening example to those lucky enough to still hold spots.

“It pushes everyone, even if you’re not thinking about it,” de Haan said Saturday. “Whoever is in the lineup is going to do their best to…put the team first, and that’s what we’ve really been preaching this season. Guys are buying in and playing to the wants and needs of the coaching staff.”

None of the four veterans have yet been affected to the extent of a healthy scratch, but that immunity won’t last forever.

Zadorov, in particular, has been frustratingly inconsistent. He, Murphy and de Haan might all hear their names in trade rumors when the April 12 deadline draws nearer, given that the Hawks almost certainly can’t protect all three in the Seattle expansion draft this summer.

But for now, Colliton hopes the disconcerting sound of Beaudin, Mitchell and Boqvist barking in pursuit of their roles will prove sufficiently motivational.

“You know where you stand in the group, and you know if there are guys who are quality who aren’t playing,” Colliton said. “It keeps you sharper, because you know you have to prepare every day.

“When there’s not as much competition, human nature can be to take it for granted and to get a bit complacent… But [when there’s] competition, knowing you have to fight for your ice and your role, that’s a really good thing for the team.”
