Myanmar police fire tear gas, rubber bullets at protesterson March 2, 2021 at 5:22 pm

YANGON, Myanmar — Police in Myanmar repeatedly used tear gas and rubber bullets Tuesday against crowds protesting last month’s coup, but the demonstrators regrouped after each volley and tried to defend themselves with barricades as standoffs between protesters and security forces intensified.

Myanmar authorities have escalated their crackdown on the protests in recent days, making mass arrests and firing into the crowds. The United Nations said it believed at least 18 people were killed on Sunday by security forces. Foreign ministers from Southeast Asian countries called Tuesday for an end to the violence and talks to resolve the increasingly volatile crisis.

Despite the crackdown, demonstrators have continued to flood the streets — and are beginning to more rigorously resist attempts to disperse them. Hundreds, many wearing construction helmets and carrying makeshift shields, gathered in Myanmar’s largest city of Yangon, where a day earlier police had fired repeated rounds of tear gas. They dragged bamboo poles and debris to form barricades, chanted slogans and sang songs at the police lines. They even threw banana skins onto the road in front of them in a bid to slow any police rush.

The mainly young demonstrators fled in panic each time tear gas canisters were fired but soon returned to their barricades. Videos posted on social media showed similar chaotic scenes in the Insein neighborhood of northern Yangon.

Protesters also took up their flags and banners to march through the streets of Dawei, a small city in southeastern Myanmar that has seen almost daily large demonstrations against the coup. One group of demonstrators was targeted by the security forces as it entered a narrow street on its way to pay respects at the house of a man killed in Sunday’s crackdown. Another was attacked on the main street in the city’s center.

Police also dispersed protests in Mandalay, the country’s second-largest city, on Tuesday.

Yangon, Dawei and Mandalay were among the cities where security forces reportedly fired live ammunition into crowds Sunday, according to the U.N. Human Rights Office. There were reports that they also fired live rounds Tuesday, but they could not immediately be confirmed.

Some fear the junta’s escalating use of force is meant to provoke a violent backlash by the demonstrators — who have largely remained nonviolent — in order to discredit them and justify an even harsher crackdown. Videos from recent days show a greater number of protesters trying to stand their ground and throw objects at the police.

“I beg the people in Myanmar not to fall in this trap, so to stay peaceful,” U.N. Special Envoy on Myanmar Christine Schraner Burgener said in interview with CNN, acknowledging that it was easier for her, safely away from the violence, to urge peaceful protesting. She also accused the authorities of spreading rumors about the conditions of people in detention to stir up even more anger on the streets.

The Feb. 1 coup reversed years of slow progress toward democracy in Myanmar after five decades of military rule. It came the day a newly elected Parliament was supposed to take office. Ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy party would have been installed for a second five-year term, but instead she was detained along with President Win Myint and other senior officials.

The military government has charged Suu Kyi, 75, with several offenses that critics say are trumped up merely to keep her jailed and potentially prevent her from participating in the election promised in a year’s time by the military. Her party says it does not know where Suu Kyi — who has a long history of campaigning for democracy in Myanmar — is being held.

The weekend crackdown drew international condemnation. In addition to the use of force, authorities also detained more than 1,000 people over the weekend, according to the independent Assistance Association for Political Prisoners. Those detained included at least eight journalists, among them Thein Zaw of The Associated Press.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called the use of force and arbitrary arrests “unacceptable,” according to his spokesperson. The U.S., British and other governments issued similar statements of concern.

But the military has showed no sign of backing down.

The protesters and their supporters have appealed for help from abroad, but there are few prospects for major intervention. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations, a regional group of 10 nations, has a policy of seeking a consensus among its members, making it unlikely to take strong action. A virtual meeting Tuesday of the group ended with a statement calling for the parties in Myanmar to begin talks to try to reach a peaceful settlement.

The U.N.’s independent expert on human rights in Myanmar, Tom Andrews, has proposed that countries could institute a global embargo on the sale of arms to Myanmar and “tough, targeted and coordinated sanctions” against those responsible for the coup, the crackdown and other rights abuses.

But any kind of coordinated action at the United Nations would be difficult since two permanent members of the U.N. Security Council, China and Russia, would almost certainly veto it. Some countries have imposed or are considering imposing their own sanctions.

No injuries after fire tears through vacant Aurora apartment buildingon March 2, 2021 at 3:40 pm

A vacant apartment building in Aurora was destroyed in a blaze that put firefighters on the defensive Tuesday morning in the western suburb.

Although initial reports indicated a person was trapped inside, the building was actually empty and no one was injured, Aurora Fire Department Battalion Chief Jim Rhodes said.

The fire spread quickly through the three-and-a-half story wooden frame apartment building in the 200 block of West Downer Place, Rhodes said.

Neighbors called 911 about 7 a.m. after noticing the fire, he said. Firefighters saw smoke billowing from the home soon after they left the station and found flames shooting from the side of the home when they arrived.

“It was a pretty labor-intensive fire,” Rhodes said. Firefighters were forced to exit the home a couple times when the fire became too dangerous, he said.

“We were ultimately able to get back in there and put out the fire,” he said.

Crews were still on scene at 9:30 a.m. at the home, which Rhodes said was a total loss.

Neighboring homes were undamaged by the flames, he said.

She was one of two people wounded in the Monday night shooting.

An 11-year-old girl was critically hurt by a stray bullet Monday night at a gas station on the Far South Side.

A 19-year-old man, who was also wounded, was shot as he left the store of a gas station about 10:50 p.m. in the 100 block of West 127th Street in West Pullman, Chicago police said.

An 11-year-old girl was shot in her face as she sat in the back of a vehicle parked at a gas pump, according to police, who said she wasn’t the intended target. She was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital in critical condition, according to Chicago fire officials.

The man, shot in his groin area, returned fire but didn’t hit anyone, police said. He was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in serious-to-critical condition, fire officials said.

Community activist Andrew Holmes spoke to reporters outside the children’s hospital and asked anyone with information on the shooter to come forward.

“The family that’s going through this shouldn’t be,” Holmes said. “This child is in pain.”

A weapon was found in the 12600 block of South Wentworth Avenue, police said. No one was in custody.

One person was taken to the hospital with a minor burn and four people were taken to the hospital for treatment.

A high-rise fire and carbon monoxide leak sent five people to hospitals early Tuesday in Uptown on the North Side.

Firefighters were called to high carbon monoxide readings about 4:30 a.m. at an apartment complex in the 4500 block of North Sheridan Road, according to Chicago fire officials.

Four people were taken to the hospital for treatment, the department said.

Crews found a faulty furnace and returned carbon monoxide levels, which read 200 parts per million, back to normal a short time later, fire officials said. Residents returned to the building.

About 30 minutes later, a small fire was found in one of the units, fire officials said. The blaze was put out shortly after it was discovered.

One person was taken to the hospital with a minor burn, fire officials said.

The 7-foot-1 basketball Hall of Famer gets his chance to dish out retribution — maybe a slam, a side headlock or a clothesline — when he steps into the ring for his first match with AEW on Wednesday.

Hack-a-Shaq is coming to All Elite Wrestling.

Shaquille O’Neal may again absorb some intentional hits in his tag team match this week. The 7-foot-1 basketball Hall of Famer gets his chance to dish out retribution — maybe a slam, a side headlock or a clothesline — when he steps into the ring for his first match with AEW.

“Oh, I’m winning,” O’Neal said. “Guaranteed.”

O’Neal says he’s a lifelong wrestling fan and ripped off a list of favorite wrestlers from Tony Atlas and Junkyard Dog to Andre the Giant and Brock Lesnar.

Big guys. Tough guys.

Like Shaq.

O’Neal is set to perform in his first competitive match when he teams in All Elite Wrestling with Jade Cargill in a mixed tag to take on Cody Rhodes and Red Velvet at Daily’s Place in Jacksonville, Florida, on Wednesday’s episode of “Dynamite.”

The seeds for a feud were set up last November when Cargill appeared on “Dynamite” and trash-talked Rhodes that O’Neal was the real giant-killer of pro wrestling. O’Neal responded on “Inside the NBA” and told Rhodes to name the place.

“I’m the type, I can never back down from a challenge,” O’Neal told The Associated Press. “I’m not a professional wrestler, but I’ve been in a match before. I’ve got a lot of moves in my arsenal. When you step inside somebody’s world, you have to stick to what you’re masterful at. I’m not acrobatic. I’m not going to be jumping off the ropes. I’m coming with the power game. When I get hands on him, I’m going to display this power.”

O’Neal visited the wrestling-training facility Nightmare Factory in the Norcross, Georgia, but has otherwise limited professional wrestling training.

“I’m the type that if I have a look and see you do it, I got it,” O’Neal said.

O’Neal was crushed as a teenager when Hulk Hogan slammed and defeated Andre the Giant in the main event of WrestleMania III.

Once he became an NBA star, Shaq Diesel — a nickname made for pro wrestling — eventually had a word with the Hulkster.

“I told him, ‘you broke my heart when you body-slammed Andre the Giant,’” O’Neal said. “I cried as a kid. I really did.”

All was — mostly — forgiven seven years later in 1994 when Hogan beat Ric Flair at Bash at the Beach and celebrated with O’Neal. O’Neal has been as well traveled inside the squared circle as some of his favorite stars. He stood side-by-very-large-side with Hogan in both World Championship Wrestling and Impact Wrestling, and even competed in the Andre the Giant battle royal at WrestleMania in 2016.

O’Neal, who boxed Shane Mosley in 2010, stared down the 7-foot Big Show in WWE’s battle royal before they teamed up to double choke-slam Kane. The remaining wrestlers conspired to toss O’Neal over the ropes and eliminate him from the match.

“I wanted to get my hands on the Big Show,” O’Neal said.

O’Neal might get his chance after Show left WWE after a 20-plus year stint there and is set to make his AEW debut on Wednesday.

What a coincidence!

The 48-year-old O’Neal, who won four NBA titles over his Hall of Fame career, is the latest in a long line of active and retired athletes who wrestled in attraction matches. Dennis Rodman and Karl Malone wrestled for WCW in the 1990s, Lawrence Taylor wrestled in the main event of WrestleMania XI, and Mike Tyson has made appearances for WWE and AEW.

“This one will top them all,” O’Neal said.

Zach LaVine’s Road to Being an NBA All-StarDrew Krieson March 2, 2021 at 2:35 pm

Sound the alarms people! Zach LaVine has been named an All-Star for the first time in his NBA career. And it’s about damn time that’s for sure! For the 2021 All Star Game, Zach LaVine will take on a reserve role for the East in his debut. LaVine sure deserves the ASG nod in his seventh season as he’s led the Chicago Bulls to a 15-18 record which puts them half a game out of the playoffs. He’s been an absolute force to be reckoned with and the last time he took part in some All Star Weekend activities, he won back-to-back Slam Dunk Contests. We sure can’t wait to see what he’ll do coming off the bench for the East.

What Led to Zach LaVine’s All Star Selection

The road to Zach LaVine’s All Star appearance was a bumpy one. He has been a star in the league for years, even back when he was playing further north. But he could never catapult himself in the eyes of All Star game voters. And thus, he was left watching the games from the couch. While he has yet to play minutes in an All Star Game, he has taken part in a pair Slam Dunk Contests. Back in 2015 and 2016, LaVine won consecutive dunk contests as he wowed the judges and the rest of us with his hops. It was clear to the rest of the league that the kid was a star, unfortunately, injuries would be the only thing to slow him down.

In the 2016-2017 season, Zach LaVine tore his left ACL and wouldn’t return to basketball for another 11 months. When he did finally return, he would be wearing a new uniform. Zach made his debut for the Chicago Bulls on January 13, 2018 in a victory against the Pistons  where he scored 14. About a month later, he led Chicago with 35 points in a win against his former team, the Minnesota Timberwolves. He hasn’t slowed down since, and hasn’t left Chicago either. We certainly hope he chooses to stay for the rest of his career.

This season, Zach LaVine is averaging a staggering 28.7 PPG, 5 assists, and 5.2 rebounds. There’s a reason he’s finally taking part in the ASG, and Chicagoland couldn’t be prouder of the young Bull.

2021 All-Star Game Preview

The NBA’s 70th All-Star Game will take place on Sunday, March 7 at 8PM EST. You’ll be able to watch the game and the rest of the weekend’s events on TNT. Over the course of All-Star Weekend, the league will also host a Skills Challenge and 3-Point contest, with the Dunk Contest taking place during halftime of the ASG. Who knows, maybe Zach will step in during the break to win his 3rd.
