The Chicago Bears are in two particularly difficult situations between Allen Robinson and their quarterback conundrum.
Fans just rolled their eyes reading the words ‘quarterback conundrum,’ too, because this is the mere definition of being a Bears fan. That’s all they’ve ever been used to. The Bears have never had a Hall of Fame type of quarterback, let alone just a consistently good quarterback.
We can engage in Jay Cutler arguments all day long, but the fact of the matter is, Chicago still hasn’t been a Super Bowl contender for 15 years now and haven’t won a playoff game since, well, Cutler was in town.
One of the quarterbacks that’s seemingly available for the taking right now is Sam Darnold. The New York Jets are open to discussions pertaining Darnold. Not only that, but they’re open to dealing their no. 2 overall pick.
It seems the Bears aren’t the only team with everything on the table — eh?
The Robinson situation is a sticky one, and it continues to get more ugly for the Bears. The more we hear from Robinson’s camp on this issue, the worse Ryan Pace looks. If he could just give the man the money he deserves, we’d be off Pace’s back — for now.
With Robinson’s future in flux, one particular idea that’s been tossed around on social media lately is making an even swap with the Jets for Darnold.
As crazy as it sounds, some folks are all aboard this train, while I’m attempting to make any sense of this ridiculous idea. The Bears trading away one of the NFL’s most consistent and talented receivers for a young, shaky-at-best quarterback seems like another terrible idea for this franchise.
But, because it’s being so heavily discussed, let’s look at what one of a few potential deals might look like if the Bears were to take it seriously.
TAMPA, FLORIDA – JANUARY 13: Steven Stamkos #91 of the Tampa Bay Lightning looks to pass during a game against the Chicago Blackhawks on opening night of the 2020-21 NHL season at Amalie Arena on January 13, 2021 in Tampa, Florida. (Photo by Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images)
The Chicago Blackhawks have really surprised every single NHL fan so far this season. Their roster isn’t that good and it is very young. However, good goaltending, contributions from everyone, and elite play from Patrick Kane have really helped them be one of those surprise teams. At 12-7-4, they are in fourth place of the Central Division and are five points clear of fifth-place Columbus (the top four seeds in each division make the playoffs).
The one tough stretch for the ChicagoBlackhawks this season came right at the beginning of the season. They started 0-3-1 with four straight losses to the Tampa Bay Lightning and Florida Panthers (two apiece). They gave up five goals in every game and didn’t do a very good job scoring goals. Now, their toughest test of the season comes as they have to play the Lightning three times in the next four days.
The Lightning are the defending Stanley Cup Champions. 2020 was a phenomenal year for them before the COVID-19 pause and then they were very good again in the bubble. They defeated the Dallas Stars to capture their first Cup since 2004. Now, they are looking to repeat which is very difficult but they are good enough. They sit atop the Central with a 15-4-1 record and should have a really nice seed in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
It would look really good for the Hawks if they were able to snag some points. Nobody is expecting them to go 3-0-0 against them but they need to play well. If they somehow were as bad as they were against them early this season, their playoff hopes might be in doubt. There is still going to be a lot of hockey left but this is a big measuring stick.
What is it that makes the Tampa Bay Lightning so good? Well, it starts in their goal. Andrei Vasilevskiy currently has three straight shutouts which is a crazy stat by NHL standards. It is difficult to get one let alone three in a row. The Hawks are going to need bodies in front, deflections, and hard work in order to beat him when he is in the net.
The Bolts are also elite when it comes to defending. It starts and ends with Victor Hedman who might be the best defenseman in the NHL. The rest of the crew behind him isn’t too shabby either so the Hawks must make it hard on them. If they are successful, it should also make things hard on their forwards who are capable of burning you in every way. Guys like Steven Stamkos, Braden Point, and Ondrej Palat are very dangerous and amongst the league’s best.
The good news is that these games are at the United Center. The first two games against them were at the Amalie Arena in Tampa. Playing at home should serve them well. They are 6-3-1 at the UC this year so hopefully, that trend continues. It may sound like a cliche at times but this is the most important stretch of the season for them up to this point and it isn’t close.
BUFFALO, NY – JANUARY 14: Jack Eichel #9 of the Buffalo Sabres before the game against the Washington Capitals at KeyBank Center on January 14 , 2021 in Buffalo, New York. (Photo by Kevin Hoffman/Getty Images)
The National Hockey League rumor mills are always going strong but one of the best players in the National Hockey League is now involved. Jack Eichel might be one of the most underrated players in the NHL because of how bad his team has been. Nobody is on Connor McDavid‘s level but Eichel was selected one pick behind him at number two in the 2015 NHL Draft. He is right there with players like Nathan MacKinnon and Auston Matthews for young superstars. Now, there are trade rumors surrounding him and he would look awesome on the Chicago Blackhawks.
It isn’t really likely to happen but it would transform the future of the franchise for sure. He would automatically be right there with Patrick Kane for the best player on the team. Those two on the power play would certainly be something special. Eichel is a center but he has a lot of similar skills as Kane. He is a surgeon with his passing and can snipe with the best of them.
If they (Kane and Eichel) were on the same team, you would have to think they play on different lines at five on five. Alex DeBrincat and Dominik Kubalik are both wings you dish out evenly. When Jonathan Toews and/or Kirby Dach come back, Eichel would help them form a monster down the middle that is unmatched. You can throw Kane on either Dach or Toews’ line and they would cook.
As mentioned before, this isn’t something that you should expect. Despite having a good season so far, the Hawks are closer to being a bad team than a championship team. They also probably don’t have the necessary assets that would be needed to acquire Eichel. Kane is from Buffalo but there is no shot the Hawks would be willing to trade him there for Eichel at this time (right or wrong).
One of the aforementioned DeBrincat or Kubalik might need to be included. Kirby Dach’s name might be in play if a trade of this magnitude happened and they might need to include one of their young stud defensemen. Picks and prospects might be needed too. This is an elite player that Buffalo isn’t just going to give away. They may trade him but a package that huge (from any team) will be needed. With all of that said, he sure would look good out there in a Blackhawks sweater skating as nicely as he does.
As you can see, Jack Eichel has the ability to shoot that puck from long-range or tough angles to score goals for himself. He also has the clear ability to create for others around him. In his career playing for the horrible Buffalo Sabres team (longest playoff drought in the NHL), he has 139 goals and 213 assists for 352 points in 372 games.
In 2020, the Sabres are as bad as they have ever been and Eichel still has a 55.8 CorsiFor meaning his team dominates shots on goal at even strength when he is on the ice. This is the type of player that any NHL team should be calling about every day to see if the rumors about his potential trade are true. If the Blackhawks ever pulled off a miracle like this they would be a true playoff contender again.
The Chicago Cubs have a lot of unknowns beyond the 2021 season. There are some star players who have messy contract situations but you would think that the new regime in charge will take care of those to the best of their ability. For some of the depth pieces that are on expiring deals, they may not be there beyond 2021. These are the players that are the most likely to be gone after the 2021 season is over:
The Chicago Cubs made the strange decision to have a reunited season with Jake Arrieta. He wasn’t that good with the Philadelphia Phillies since leaving the organization but they are hoping to get one more good year out of him. It is certainly possible but it doesn’t feel like the type of deal that is going to go beyond the 2021 season.
It is a nice story that he is coming back and all but they better hope it works. They traded Yu Darvish to the San Diego Padres and the only reason they let Arrieta walk in the first place was so that they can go out and sign Darvish. The way things have played out over the past few years has just been strange as far as this situation. Figuring out where Arrieta fits into the rotation is going to be the next order of business as he goes through spring training.
This is a low-risk deal because they just don’t have to bring him back after 2021. Chances are, that will be the case regardless. He is one of the true top candidates to be gone following the conclusion of this upcoming 2021 year.

A 64-year-old man died Tuesday after a crash days earlier in Gresham on the South Side.
Lester Hannon, of Back of the Yards, crashed into another vehicle Sunday in the 7700 block of South Racine Avenue, Chicago police said.
Hannon was driving south on Racine Avenue when he lost control of his Ford Taurus and struck a Cadillac driven by a 23-year-old man, police said. Hannon’s car spun out and struck a fire hydrant before coming to a rest.
He was injured on his leg and upper body and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he died about 8 a.m. Tuesday, police said.
The Cook County medical examiner’s office ruled his death an accident.
