In the weekend’s first attack, a woman was grazed when her ex-boyfriend shot at her Friday in Chatham on the South Side.

Five people have been shot in Chicago since Friday evening.

In the latest attack, two men were wounded in a drive-by Saturday in Englewood on the South Side.

About 4:45 p.m., the men, 18 and 27, were on the front porch of a residence in the 6300 block of South Elizabeth Street when someone in a dark-colored car pulled up and opened fire, Chicago police said.

The 18-year-old was struck in the left leg and the older man was struck in the right leg and buttocks, police said. They were both brought to University of Chicago Medical Center for treatment.

A 45-year-old man was shot half an hour earlier in another drive-by in Austin on the West Side.

He was walking about 4:15 p.m. in the 1200 block of North Lockwood Avenue when a dark-colored vehicle pulled up and someone inside opened fire, police said. The man was struck in the back and brought to Loyola Medical Center for treatment.

Earlier Saturday afternoon, a man was shot at a home in Roseland.

Someone fired shots at the 33-year-old about 1:45 p.m. inside a home in the first block of East 100th Street, Chicago police said. He showed up at Roseland Hospital with gunshot wounds to both his legs, and his condition was not known.

In the weekend’s first shooting, a woman was grazed in Chatham.

The woman, 26, was arguing with her ex-boyfriend through the door of her home about 8:40 p.m. Friday in the 8100 block of South Ellis Avenue, Chicago police said.

When the woman refused to let the 27-year-old man in, he fired shots into the home, grazing her on the chest, police said. The woman was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center for treatment.

Last weekend, six people were killed and 21 others wounded in shootings citywide.

Ayo Dosunmu’s return powers No. 4 Illinois over No. 7 Ohio StateAssociated Presson March 7, 2021 at 12:26 am

Dosunmu returned after missing three games with a concussion and facial injuries to score 19 points, and the Illini beat the Buckeyes 73-68.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — After missing three games with a concussion and facial injuries, Illinois star Ayo Dosunmu returned Saturday wearing a protective mask he chose because it makes him look a little like a superhero.

Dosunmu played the part with a 19-point performance, and the No. 4 Illini rallied late to beat reeling No. 7 Ohio State 73-68.

“They gave me different options of masks to wear, and I thought this was the best mask for me,” he said of the protective covering over his broken nose and upper face. “I’m into comic books and stuff. I feel like a superhero with a black mask on.”

Andre Curbelo matched Dosunmu’s 19, and Illinois (20-6, 16-4) got its second straight road win over a top 10 team after routing No. 2 Michigan on Tuesday. The Illini have won 11 of 12 and enter next week’s Big Ten Tournament with a double-bye.

“What a week,” Illinois coach Brad Underwood said. “That’s a tough, tough, tough group of guys in that locker room.”

When it looked like Ohio State might start to pull away late, the Buckeyes’ shooting went cold. Illinois’ Da’Monte Williams hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 68 with 1:31 left.

Dosunmu’s layup and three foul shots in the last 44 seconds provided the margin of victory as Ohio State failed to make another basket in the game. The Buckeyes missed their last 10 shots and didn’t score in the final 3:48.

“Things were just not falling for us,” Ohio State forward Kyle Young. “We got open shots. They were just not falling.”

E.J. Liddell led the Buckeyes (18-8, 12-8) with 19 points, and Duane Washington Jr. and Justice Sueing each had 15 for Ohio State, which finished the regular season with four straight losses, three against Top 10 teams.

Illinois led by 10 during the first half but a late put-back by Liddell cut the advantage to 41-37 at the break. The teams traded punches in the second half with Ohio State up by four when Illinois mounted the final rally.

“We’re in a good place,” Underwood said. “You want to go in (the Big Ten tournament) confident. You don’t want to go in doubting yourself.”

BIG PICTURE

Illinois is peaking at the right time and brimming with confidence after beating top 10 teams in back-to-back games for the first time since the 2005 NCAA Tournament. The Illini should move up to No. 3 in the AP poll. The Buckeyes showed an inability to finish in their most rigorous and disastrous stretch of the season.

“It’s the Big Ten. Every game is a competitive game,” Dosunmu said. “Every game is a dogfight, every game is an NCAA Tournament game. But to win 11 of 12, we beat some very good teams. It just gives us more confidence. We know we can beat anyone in the country.”

BUCKEYE SWOON

Ohio State was ranked No. 4 and projected to be a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament heading into the last week of February. They stayed at No. 4 after a loss to then No. 3 Michigan, but losses to Michigan State and then-No. 9 Iowa dropped them to No. 7. Another drop is likely.

CJ Walker and Young were recognized on Ohio State’s senior day. Walker has already said he wants to move to pro basketball, but Young hasn’t said yet whether he’ll take advantage of the extra year of eligibility awarded by the NCAA to all players because of COVID-19. Young has played four years but has battled injuries for the last three. Walker is finishing his second season after transferring from Florida State. Both have graduated.

Big, experienced Westinghouse beats Lincoln ParkMichael O’Brienon March 7, 2021 at 12:41 am

Gary Johns, a 6-7 Westinghouse senior, scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the Warriors’ 62-53 win against visiting Lincoln Park.

High school basketball players are no longer the first choice for college coaches looking to add players to their programs. The transfer portal is at the top of the list and JUCO’s and prep schools aren’t far behind.

That’s changed things drastically for high school players. Add in the fact that the NCAA granted an extra year of eligibility to college players due to COVID-19 and it is clear to see what the Class of 2021 is up against.

Westinghouse and Lincoln Park both have players that, if they performed well senior year, would have been looking at numerous college scholarship offers in the past.

Instead they find themselves playing in empty gyms for a one-month season during a recruiting dead period.

Gary Johns, a 6-7 Westinghouse senior, is a prime example. He scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the Warriors’ 62-53 win against visiting Lincoln Park.

“I know it is my time to step up to the plate,” Johns said.

He’s a bit of a late bloomer and a full season in front of recruiting analysts and college coaches could have opened up some doors for him. Westinghouse coach Rafie Fields said Johns has some JUCO and NAIA interest but believes Johns, who is a good student, can definitely play at the D1 level.

Junior Martell Webb added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Warriors (2-1, 2-1 Red-North/West). Senior guard Juvon Crawford scored 12 and Dwayne Walton added 11 points and seven rebounds.

The game was tight until late in the third quarter. Westinghouse took control with a 10-0 run and Lincoln Park (0-4, 0-4) never got closer than five points after that.

“Unfortunately, it’s a short season,” Fields said. “But these guys have been playing together for four years. They know each other well and it’s just a matter of going out and executing. So that definitely helps us. They can just kind of score and turn it on when they see fit.”

Lincoln Park’s Sincere Malone (15) goes to the basket during the game against Westinghouse.

Lincoln Park seniors Sincere Malone and Julio Montes are two other players caught in the current college recruiting mess.

Malone, who started high school at Simeon, has bounced around to a few different places but quietly improved every season. He’s made his biggest leap this year. He’s now 6-9 and playing with more aggression. Malone finished with 12 points, 14 boards and five blocks.

He looked like a future Division I player against Westinghouse. After the game Malone said he has offers from Chicago State and Southern University, along with interest from Wake Forest and a few others.

Montes has been one of the city’s most dependable points guards for three seasons. He scored 18 points. He’s also struggling to get enough attention from colleges.

“A lot of schools have shown interest in Sincere but they haven’t offered him yet,” Lincoln Park coach Antwon Jennings said. “But I think the offers will come. Sincere is an excellent player. He can play anywhere on the floor and he can guard any position.”
