Moon Alert

There are no restrictions to shopping or important decisions. The moon is in Gemini.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

Even though it’s Friday, you have lots of mental energy, especially to make long-range plans. You also might have a vigorous and spirited conversation with someone older or more experienced, which could yield some positive, workable ideas.

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

This is a good money day! You’re thinking about money and money-making projects. You might also explore ideas about spending money or making a particularly serious purchase. This might even involve getting the cooperation or approval of someone older, perhaps a boss.

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

This is a productive day because you have the mental and emotional energy to go after what you want, which might be about travel plans or dealing with a foreign country. It might also relate to legal situations or something to do with higher education, the media or publishing. Big ideas!

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

Do some research to get results today! You will learn something if you’re willing to dig for answers. Whatever you learn might ultimately affect how you divide or share something with someone or how you benefit from someone else’s wealth or assets.

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

Discussions with friends or groups might give you some practical pointers about how to deal with the partnerships of those who are closest to you. Or vice versa, someone older (a friend or partner) might give you advice on how to deal with a friend or a group or organization. Hey, why not get all the help you can?

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

You are high visibility today, but this is a good thing because you appear competent and capable to others. (Especially bosses and parents.) Be smart and use this flattering spotlight to encourage others to work hard and achieve results that you think are important.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

This is a good day for you if you have to study or learn something new because you have the mental energy necessary for the job. Likewise, you can use this same mental perseverance to plow through legal matters or anything to do with medicine, higher education, publishing and the media.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

This is the perfect day to make plans about taxes, debt, shared property and inheritances. You might want to organize paperwork, especially paperwork or financial details related to home, family or even a parent. You will get a lot done.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Today discussions with a partner or close friend will be sober and realistic. You might need to be patient with someone because you’re dealing with a challenging situation. Perhaps you will look for help from someone older or more experienced because you respect their wisdom? (A good idea.)

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Attitude, energy and focus will bring results, which is what you can expect on the job or with any task that you set for yourself. You’re also prepared to stand alone and face whatever difficulties arise with your job, your health or a pet. Hey, you’ve got this.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Children might be an increased responsibility today, which is why you might have a serious discussion with someone about their care or their education. Likewise, practical discussions about the arts, sports or how to plan a social occasion or a vacation will go well.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

An older family member might have good advice for you today. Either way, you will probably prefer to cocoon at home and withdraw somewhat so that you can get stuff done. You have an agenda; a To Do list and you want to be productive.

If Your Birthday Is Today

Actor Bruce Willis (1955) shares your birthday. You’re caring and compassionate. You’re also witty with a quirky sense of humor. You work hard for what you want. This year it’s time to let go of what is no longer relevant or useful and move on to something new and different. This is not loss. Au contraire! You are lightening your load to make room for new beginnings!

Comedy hub plans new productions at its Piper’s Alley venue, with audiences subject to COVID-19 restrictions.

Live from Chicago — it’s The Second City.

The iconic comedy hub, shuttered for a year, said Thursday it will reopen its doors on May 7 to in-person performances at the Piper’s Alley location. Tickets go on sale March 25 for new hourlong shows, Thursdays through Sundays, at both the Mainstage and e.t.c. theaters, according to reports. Seating limits, per COVID-19 protocols, will be adhered to.

In addition, in-person classes at The Second City Training Center are scheduled to return May 3, also with limited capacity.

“We realize that most people have binge-watched every TV show ever made at this point, so it’s exciting that live, in-person experiences are set to make their long-awaited return,” said The Second City’s executive producer Jon Carr.

Other safety measures include mask wearing, mask-friendly drinking straws, social distancing, audience limits based on state and local guidelines, and enhanced cleaning before and between performances, Thursday’s announcement said.

For tickets, visit secondcity.com.

In February it was announced that the company had been sold for only the second time in its 62-year history, in this instance to ZMC, a New York firm run by private equity investor Strauss Zelnick. The Financial Times cited sources saying the deal could be worth $50 million. The company has additional operations in Hollywood and Toronto.

In 2020, Second City appointed Carr as executive producer, succeeding interim executive producer Anthony LeBlanc. LeBlanc had replaced Andrew Alexander, co-owner and longtime executive producer, who exited the company earlier that year amid allegations of systemic racism.

Dylan Strome impresses in return, but Blackhawks lose to LightningBen Popeon March 19, 2021 at 2:47 am

The Hawks’ 4-2 loss dropped them to 1-5-0 in their last six games, even though Strome scored a goal and played well in his first game in a month.

When Dylan Strome began feeling headaches in February, he initially dismissed them as just that and played through them.

But when they kept coming and felt worse and worse, he finally suspected a concussion.

“I wasn’t feeling exactly like myself,” Strome said. “I figured it was probably the right thing to sit out. The headaches didn’t go away for a while, so I’m happy I made the decision to stop playing for a little bit.”

That “little bit” ultimately turned into nearly a month away from the team.

But 10 days after he resumed practicing, Strome returned to the lineup Thursday and was one of the Blackhawks’ best players in a 4-2 loss to the Lightning.

“He was really good,” coach Jeremy Colliton said. “[He] made a lot of plays, won some races, was strong on the puck. [I was] very pleased with how he played.”

“It was nice to get back out there with the guys,” Strome said. “I’m feeling a lot better. I did a lot of skating while I was out…so [my] legs felt good tonight. But [it was] unfortunate we couldn’t get the win.”

The defeat marks the Hawks’ fifth in their last six games, a discouraging if fairly predictable downturn in the hardest portion of their schedule.

Colliton said he thought the Hawks “played really well” in a low-event contest — shots on goal were only 23-21, Lightning — but two soft goals allowed by Kevin Lankinen and a strange hesitancy to shoot the puck late cost them. Lightning rookie Ross Colton’s breakaway goal with 14:28 left proved to be the game-winner.

“[Lankinen] would probably like to have a couple back there,” Colliton said. “But it’s his first year. It’s going to happen sometimes. Overall, our performance is something we can build on.”

The loss was of no fault to Strome, who scored a goal in the first period, looked uncharacteristically fast in transition and generated numerous threatening shifts on the wing of a newly formed line with Ryan Carpenter and Mattias Janmark.

Strome has struggled in the past when Colliton shifts him to wing, but said he felt “pretty comfortable” there Thursday, mainly due to his chemistry with Carpenter.

“[There’s] lot less thinking when you’re on the wing, I find,” he said. “I just went out there and, when I got the puck, tried to make something happen. I was playing with a couple of great players.”

He tied the game 2-2 late in the first period when after receiving a centering feed from Janmark and jamming it past Lightning goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy on his third attempt.

He nearly added another goal in the second period when he chased down an errant pass and was robbed one-on-one against Vasilevskiy, who is now 5-0-0 with a .930 save percentage against the Hawks this year.

With Strome on the ice, the Hawks dominated in the Lightning in shot attempts (13-6), shots on goal (9-2) and scoring chances (8-4). Strome produced four of those shots on goal himself during 17:17 of ice time.

His much-improved play after an extended time off — he had been awful in the weeks leading up to his injured reserve designation — matches up with the surges guys like Carpenter, Alex DeBrincat and Adam Boqvist experienced after missing time on the COVID-19 list.

He’s hopeful he’ll experience a similar phenomenon. At the least, he’s thankful to have moved past the concussion.

“It’s never fun,” he said. “There’s so many different reasons for headaches. It’s not like a specific thing where you can say, ’Oh, it’s a headache or concussion.’ It’s a weird injury for sure. Sometimes it’s from your neck or your posture, whatever it may be. Just tried to fix whatever I could at the time and throughout the past month to try to come back and play.”

Child escapes South Side fire by jumping onto mattress from 3rd-floor apartment; 2 siblings rescuedon March 19, 2021 at 1:33 am

With her Washington Park apartment ablaze behind her, an 8-year-girl jumped from a third-floor window onto a mattress to cushion her landing Wednesday night.

Firefighters soon entered the home by ladder and rescued her younger brothers, ages 2 and 5, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

The Fire Department initially told reporters that the girl threw the mattress out of the window herself but corrected the narrative Thursday evening, saying that a neighbor actually laid it out.

The three children were treated for smoke inhalation at Comer Children’s Hospital, where by Thursday morning they had been upgraded from serious to good condition, Fire Department spokesman Frank Velez said.

The older sister who jumped also injured an ankle, Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said.

No adults were home at the time the fire broke out in the 6100 block of South Wabash Avenue.

The mother of the children was located later in the morning, according to Chicago police spokeswoman Sally Bown. No charges had been filed as of Thursday evening.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is investigating allegations of neglect, according to DCFS spokesman Bill McCaffrey.

The fire broke out shortly before midnight Wednesday in the apartment’s kitchen, but the cause remained under investigation, Velez said, adding there were no indications the fire was set intentionally.

The blaze was contained to one unit, Velez said. The 12-unit apartment complex was partially evacuated, and residents took shelter in a warming bus, he said. There were no other injuries or displacements, Velez said.

Firefighters found the stove on when they entered the apartment, Langford said.

About 20 Fire Department vehicles and nearly 40 firefighters worked to extinguish the fire, he said.

The department initially had provided different ages for the children.
