14 shot in Chicago since Friday eveningon March 27, 2021 at 10:50 pm

At least 14 people have been wounded in shootings across Chicago so far this weekend.

The weekend’s latest shooting left a teenage bystander wounded in East Garfield Park on the West Side.

The 17-year-old boy was walking about 4:30 p.m. in the 3300 block of West Ohio Street when someone in a vehicle drove by and fired shots at a nearby group of people, Chicago police said. Someone in the group returned fire, and the boy was caught in the crossfire, taking a bullet to the chest.

He was brought to Mt. Sinai Hospital in good condition, police said.

Hours earlier, four people were wounded, two critically, in Austin on the West Side.

The group was standing outside about 12:10 p.m. when someone fired shots at them in the 500 block of North Leamington Avenue, Chicago police said.

One man, 64, was struck in the leg, and another, 54, was struck in the thigh, police said. Both were taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital in critical condition. A third man, 42, was grazed on the back and treated at the scene.

A fourth victim later showed up at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood with a gunshot wound to the shoulder, and was listed in good condition, police said.

Early Saturday morning, a man was critically wounded in a shooting in the South Shore neighborhood.

The 21-year-old was standing outside about 1:45 a.m. in the 7000 block of South Jeffery Boulevard when he heard shots and felt pain, police said. He suffered one gunshot wound to the groin and was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition.

Less than an hour earlier, a 25-year-old man was shot in Bronzeville on the South Side.

He was walking outside about 12:50 a.m. in the 800 block of East Oakwood Boulevard when a black sedan pulled up alongside him with three people inside, police said. One of the people inside the sedan began shooting and struck him in the hand. He was transported to Mercy Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.

Another 25-year old was hurt in a drive-by shooting about the same time in Oakland on the South Side.

About 12:50 a.m., the man was sitting in a parked vehicle in the 3800 block of South Langley Avenue when a white Jeep drove by him and began firing shots, Chicago police said. He was shot in the leg and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center where his condition was stabilized.

Just after midnight, a 56-year-old man was wounded in a shooting in South Shore.

He was exiting his vehicle about 12:10 a.m. in the 7200 block of South Coles Avenue when a person approached him and fired shots before fleeing the scene, police said. The man was shot in the stomach and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition, police said.

In the weekend’s earliest reported shooting, a man was shot Friday evening in East Garfield Park on the West Side.

The man, 22, heard shots and felt pain about 6:55 p.m. in the 3300 block of West Ohio Street, Chicago police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital with a gunshot wound to his buttocks and was listed in fair condition.

At least four other people have been wounded in citywide shootings since 5 p.m. Friday.

Twenty people were shot, four fatally, last weekend in Chicago.

Loyola’s NCAA Tournament run meets bitter end in Sweet 16 loss to Oregon Stateon March 27, 2021 at 9:39 pm

INDIANAPOLIS — Ethan Thompson scored 20 points, including a pair of clinching foul shots with 35 seconds left, and No. 12 seed Oregon State kept its dream March going with a 65-58 victory over eighth-seeded Loyola Chicago in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday.

Warith Alatishe added 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Beavers (20-12), who were picked to finish last in the Pac-12 but ran roughshod through the conference tournament and have kept on winning on college basketball’s biggest stage.

They’re headed for their first Elite Eight since 1982 — one that was later vacated by the NCAA — and will play second-seeded Houston or No. 10 seed Syracuse on Monday night for a spot in the Beavers’ first Final Four since 1963.

Not even the fervent prayers of Sister Jean could help Loyola (26-4) deal with the constantly changing defenses that Oregon State coach Wayne Tinkle rolled out. The Ramblers, who played with such poise and perfection in toppling top-seeded Illinois, wound up shooting 33% from the field and 5 of 23 from beyond the arc.

All-America forward Cameron Krutwig led Loyola with 14 points. Lucas Williamson and Braden Norris added 10 apiece, though both of them missed 3-pointers in the closing minutes as Loyola tried to mount a comeback.

It was the first meeting between the teams since Dec. 31, 1927, when Loyola won 31-19 in Chicago — and Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt, the Ramblers’ beloved 101-year-old chaplain, was still a schoolgirl.

For most of Saturday, it looked as if 31 points would be plenty.

Oregon State turned it over twice before getting off a shot, went nearly 6 1/2 minutes before making its first field goal and at one point was 1 of 8 with four turnovers. Then the Ramblers, who failed to take advantage of their defense, proceeded to miss 11 consecutive shots as Oregon State flip-flopped between man-to-man and zone defenses.

The Beavers wound up shutting out Loyola the last 5:48 to take a 24-16 halftime lead, the lowest-scoring first half of the entire tournament. Krutwig was 3 of 5 from the field; the rest of the Ramblers were 1 of 18.

You’d have sworn the Beavers sported the nation’s No. 1 scoring defense, not the other way around.

Oregon State built on Warith Alatishe’s buzzer-beating bucket to end the first half by finally getting some shots to go in the second. Thompson did most of the damage, hitting an early jumper, beating the shot clock with another fadeaway jumper, then catching a Hail Mary heave to beat a full-court press and give the Beavers a 37-24 lead with 12 minutes to go.

Meanwhile, the Ramblers were hitting everything but the bottom of the bucket.

Williamson rimmed out 3-pointers on back-to-back trips down the floor. Tate Hall clanked a couple of free throws when that’s about the only place they were scoring. Krutwig even had a baby hook go halfway down and right back out.

Even when the shots wouldn’t fall, Loyola continued to play defense, and that kept the game close. And when Braden Norris knocked down a 3 and Aher Uguak tipped in an ally-oop with 2:43 to go, the Ramblers had trimmed their deficit to 49-44 and had the partisan crowd sitting mostly in the rafters of Bankers Life Fieldhouse cheering.

Kennedy hit a 3-pointer to get the Ramblers within 51-47, then another shot to get within 53-49, but the Beavers kept finding answers. Lucas provided one with a 3, Alatishe provided another from the foul line, and that was enough to keep the Pac-12’s dream tournament going into the Elite Eight.

BIG PICTURE

Oregon State is making the most of its second NCAA Tournament appearance since 1990. The Beavers had beaten higher-seeded teams in Tennessee and Oklahoma State to reach the second weekend, then ramped up the defense against one of the nation’s best on that end of the court to keep their run going.

Loyola Chicago was trying to become the first No. 8 seed since Kentucky in 2014 to reach the Elite Eight. But its slow start from the field proved to be too much to overcome. The Ramblers’ last lead came with about six minutes left in the first half.

UP NEXT

The Beavers play the Cougars or the Orange for a spot in the Final Four. Oregon State has never played Syracuse, but it beat Houston in the 1966 West Region semifinal and again in the 2009 CBI Tournament.

White Sox’ Nick Madrigal says he’s ‘capable of a lot more’ in 2020on March 27, 2021 at 7:52 pm

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.. — Nick Madrigal brings a different baseball package to the table than most. He’s a high average, high contact, low walk and low-power hitter with speed.

A guy manager Tony La Russa can use and win with.

“The home run is a wonderful weapon. A three-run homer is beautiful,” La Russa said Saturday. “They usually happen against pitchers that are average to below average and against better pitchers, it’s tougher.

“There’s a lot of games you play against good pitching, good relief pitching and it’s like Joe Torre used to say, you do little things and they add up to big things and Nick is a guy who — especially when he gets the ball to right field — he can advance a guy from first to third, he can handle an at-bat in any situation.”

Just put the ball in play. It has its value, to be sure.

Madrigal’s .340 average over his 29-game debut last season was the highest by a Sox rookie since 1940. With two strikes, he batted .321, earning a “Nicky Two Strikes” nickname from broadcaster Jason Benetti, so putting the ball in play is his go-to.

But Madrigal walked only four times while striking out only seven times. And his extra-base hit collection consisted of three doubles.

He says there’s more there.

“I have a different style but I know it was only 20 or 30 games, and I’m a lot more capable of a lot more,” Madrigal told the Sun-Times. “And the way I play fits perfectly with the style of Tony La Russa’s coaching.”

When reports swirled that La Russa was a candidate to be the replacement for Rick Renteria, Madrigal was all in.

“I was excited when we hired him, because he’s more old school and likes to do a lot of different things and I feel I can fit that for him in the lineup,” Madrigal said. “I’m excited to play for him and I understand [my game is] a little different than the average player in the major leagues nowadays, but I just focus on playing the best I can and not comparing myself to other players.”

A family friend, two-time Gold Glove infielder Fernando Vina, played for La Russa and stoked Madrigal’s interest in playing for the 76-year-old manager.

“A Hall of Famer, I watched him manage the Cardinals teams and all those great teams,” Madrigal said.

“We always talk baseball. He’s a full-on baseball mind and I’m always thinking about the game, the little things, and even off the field we’re talking about game situations from the previous games.”

Madrigal, slow-rolled his start to camp this spring after coming off shoulder surgery, the result of a slide into third base last September. He also missed time with soreness in his right hand but says he’s near 100 percent now.

“Not feeling any pain or soreness lately, staying on top of that with exercises and maintaining,” he said.

Last season gave him a foundation, albeit a small one, to build from.

“A lot of things to take away from it,” he said. “I’ve watched a lot of major league baseball on TV but it’s another thing to be in the moment, be in those big stadiums, playing with guys you’ve watched growing up, the biggest thing is seeing the speed of the game, learning different pitchers and relievers and what it’s like at that level. I got to see first hand how fast the game is at the major league hitters.”

And that little guy’s mentality? For the 5-8 Madrigal, that’s an old story.

“That’s not even on my mind,” he said. “My height is not a motivating factor. I can’t tell you the last time I thought of myself as being an underdog because I’m smaller than a lot of guys. I don’t care about that — if anything I’m more of a favorite out there.”
