Won for the road: Fire finally snap skidSun-Times Sports Wireon August 29, 2021 at 6:03 am

HARRISON, N.J. — Forward Robert Beric scored in the 32nd minute, and the Fire held off the New York Red Bulls 1-0 at Red Bull Arena on Saturday night to end a 19-game road winless streak.

“Obviously, it feels really good to have an [away] win. One-and-a-half years almost is a long time,” Fire coach Raphael Wicky said. “We [have] had prettier games on the road. We [have] had games where we played much better football. But this was a great team fight, and the team showed a great mentality and spirit.”

A long throw-in by defender Carlos Teran landed among three defenders, but, after several deflections, Beric found the ball behind the defense and slipped it into the net.

Beric initially was ruled offside, but referee Victor Rivas awarded the goal after video review.

The Fire (23 points) nearly doubled their lead in the 58th minute against the run of play, but Red Bulls goalkeeper Carlos Coronel did well to dive and deny Fabian Herbers.

The Red Bulls (22 points) maintained pressure on the Fire down the stretch and had 20 shots, but goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth only had to make one save for his fifth shutout of the season and 50th regular-season shutout of his career.

The Fire, who almost had a late insurance goal from midfielder Alvaro Medran that pinged off the post, picked up their second victory against the Red Bulls in just under three weeks.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

This is a busy, fast-paced time! Appointments, errands, increased time with siblings and friends plus short trips will keep you hopping. You can get a lot done today. Some of you will tackle DIY repairs at home or redecorating projects.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

“Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound!” You’re a superhero today because you have so much energy with both the sun and fiery Mars in your sign. Use this energy to get a lot done! After the moon alert is over (see above), you might shop for pretty things.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Mercury moves into your sign to stay for the next few weeks. This makes you talkative and eager to share your ideas. Meanwhile, your ruler Venus is also in your sign, which makes this a great time to buy wardrobe goodies. (Check moon alert.) Do something different today!

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

You will get a lot done today, especially through the cooperation of others — friends, groups and organizations. You might be involved in a competition, especially through sports or physical activities. After the moon alert is over, it’s a good time to organize details about shared property.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Your ambition is aroused, which is why you are motivated and keen to accomplish a lot. This is a great day to interact with younger people as well as creative, artistic types. People will be keen to do your bidding. Nevertheless, today it will serve you best to cooperate with others.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Mercury moves to the top of your chart to join Venus, which means that relations with bosses, parents, teachers and the police will improve in the next few weeks. Others will listen to you and respect what you have to say. (You might as well use this to your advantage.)

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Disputes about shared property might be resolved because your ability to sweet talk others is remarkable. In fact, your communication skills will be excellent in the next few weeks. This is also a lovely window of time to study and broaden your knowledge.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

Be patient with partners and close friends while the sun and fiery Mars are opposite your sign. Fortunately, this is also a time when you will benefit from the wealth of others because gifts and goodies can come your way. This afternoon, you will prefer to cocoon at home.
