A momentum-swinging, game-changing play by Eastern Illinois’ defense sparked the Panthers to a 28-14 victory Saturday at Tennessee Tech to open the Ohio Valley Conference schedule.

Trailing 21-14, TTU appeared on the verge of tying the game when quarterback Drew Martin fumbled on a scramble inside the EIU 10-yard line.  

Panther defensive back Bryce Dewberry scooped up the loose ball and weaved his way for a school-record 90-yard touchdown. The TD thwarted Tennessee Tech and catapulted the Panthers to victory.

The win was the first of the season for EIU (1-4) but allowed the Panthers to open OVC play with a 1-0 record. Tennessee Tech fell to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in the league.

Big plays continue to decide games

Eastern fell behind early when Martin connected with Quinton Cross on a 62-yard touchdown pass.

After Eastern scored its first touchdown to pull within a point, freshman safety Kaelin Drakeford intercepted a Martin pass with 1:11 remaining in the half. That led to EIU’s second touchdown and a successful two-point conversion to take a 14-7 lead.

“It wasn’t pretty,” third-year EIU head coach Adam Cushing said. “When you play as hard as you can for as long as you possibly can, the bounces go your way.”

2. EIU’s ‘next man up’ philosophy produced two TDs

With key receivers sidelined by injuries, the Panthers may have discovered a new go-to target.

Freshman DeAirious Smith caught a pair of touchdowns from quarterback Otto Kuhns.

“I’m so proud of DeAirious,” Cushing said. “He showed what he’s capable of today.”

Smith had six catches for 109 yards.

3. Defensive pressure always makes things easier

Cushing said one of the keys to the win was EIU’s pressure on Martin, who made the start for TTU in place of the injured Willie Miller.

“Our defensive line was in the backfield,” Cushing said. “Our defensive line was getting in his (Martin’s) face and making him make rushed decisions.”

Defensive lineman Jordan Miles said, “That felt extraordinary. I was just looking forward to our defensive line getting pressure back there and containing him (Martin).”

Punter Logen Neidhardt again turned in a solid performance. The transfer pinned TTU inside its 10-yard line in the second quarter.

On a TTU third-down play, Dewberry helped force the Golden Eagles to punt from their 1-yard line, giving EIU good field position. 

EIU forced two turnovers on the final two Tennessee Tech possessions of the game. Miles forced two fumbles in the victory.

Linebacker Jason Johnson led the defense with 16 tackles and a fumble recovery . . . Miles had four tackles with two sacks, both forcing fumbles . . . Tim Varga added two more sacks for EIU’s defense . . . Receiver Arron Foulkes scored on a 24-yard jet sweep run . . . Harrison Bey-Buie led Eastern with a career-high 79 yards on 19 carries . . . Kuhns was 15-for-26 for 183 yards and two touchdowns. He threw one interception but was not sacked.

The sale of a slave family in Virginia. According to Maxine Watters, they didn’t have it as bad as the illegal aliens who were turned back at the southern border by horsemen.

Rep. Maxine Waters, the California Democrat, insisted that what happened on the southern border–horsemen blocking Haitian illegal aliens from entering America–was “worse than what we witnessed in slavery.” Can she really mean it? Is she that stupid?

Let us remember that speaking or writing “misinformation”–as determined by some invisible Judge of Wokeness–is cause for getting banned from Facebook, Twitter and other Orwellian social media.

It was enough to get a president of the United States expelled, someone elected by the people, no matter whom he is. Alleged misinformation was enough to get the New York Post silenced on Twitter. And that was for reporting what has turned out to be true about Hunter Biden’s laptop.

Now comes Waters with speech that is so wrong, so contrary to fact and so dangerous. Yet she remains on social media. So do the others, such as President Joe Biden and his press secretary Jen Psaki for similar nonsense.

Worse than slavery? First, the preponderance of evidence does not prove that anyone was getting whipped, and certainly not like slaves were whipped. To equate the two is to debase the suffering of millions of enslaved men, women and children.

From the first to arrive in America in 1619 to the almost 4 million held as slaves in 1860. To the uncounted number who died horrible deaths as they were shipped to America. To the mothers and fathers who saw their children sold off. To the ones who risked all to run to freedom, including those who didn’t make it. To the the shackled or physically tortured for the slightest offense. To the many who died working the fields. To the lynched.

Just as bad is her silence and absence of concern about thousands of men, women and children before her very eyes who huddled under a bridge to escape the scorching son. About the children who have been abandoned, including the toddler who discovered next to his infant sibling in the high weeds where she was left by….? About Americans who will become infected with Covid and die because of the mess that Biden has created on the border. Her view of suffering is selective and lopsided.

Can Waters be that blind or ignorant of her own history? Or does she know better and is just determined to stoke the fires of racial hatred incinerating America? Doesn’t matter which. What she has done is so far beyond “misinformation” that the censors would have to create a new descriptive. Lies, falsifications, distortions or fabrications don’t seem to capture the staggering depth of hatred that she has invoked,

How to stop her from continuing in this same kind of deceitfulness? Should she resign? Should she be censored by her congressional colleagues? Should her remarks be disavowed and condemned by progressives? (Fat chance of that.) Should she, like so many conservatives whose voices have been silenced by the tech-autocrats, be banned from social media?

Silencing her would be wrong, just as the voices of conservatives are routinely silenced. Even loons have a right to speak. Silencing her would only strengthen her standing among the many who think she’s right, even smart. More important, it reveals what a moron she truly is.

Only condemnation from her side of the political landscape will address the damage that she has done to the commonweal. But from them, only silence. Just as the person who knowing supplies an arsonist with gasoline, those progressives are equally guilty and disgusting.

A good friend gave me the plaque which I proudly hang by my front door because, for me, I truly believe that a pup can make life so much better. Why?

Because dogs are loyal. Dogs are not judgemental. Dogs could care less about your politics. Dogs merely want to love their families. That’s why I make it a point to support various charities that benefit our four-legged friends.

As to my own dog, Sydney, she’s been a Godsend and I mean that literally. She has saved my life and maybe some of those who live on my block. It was Sydney who discovered that I had left a burner ON, barely ON, but enough to fill my kitchen full of gas. Thank goodness I don’t smoke because even an ignition from a lighter could have exploded the house killing me and maybe a neighbor or two.

While staying at a hotel, during my recent 2021 road trip to Maine and back, it was Sydney who growled and barked in the middle of the night that thwarted the robbery of my auto. The thieves attempted to cut the alarm wire – missed – and cut the harness wire to my headlights. I was forced to limit my driving to daylight hours during the course of the next two days before I could get the matter addressed by my local VOLVO dealer.

But what I enjoy the most about Sydney is she’s always willing to serve as an advocate for the various charities I am involved in. When the Community Adult Day Center, where I serve as a volunteer board member hosted a day of Elvis for the clients, Syd was there for PET THERAPY and allowed herself to be the recipient of, “You Ain’t Nothing But A Hound Dog,” from none other than Mr. E-IMPERSONATOR.

It brought a bit of laughter to all who witnessed it, and that’s always something RICH for the SOUL.

And on Sunday, September 26, Syd will be at BARKAPALOOZA, at Lisle Community Park from 10-2p, manning a KISSING BOOTH from 12N-2p. Syd thought it best that she be groomed and her nails done for the occasion and I found that admirable and arranged Suds & Tails to do their magic making her smell super sweet and giving her a bit of style with a cravat so she could be that “lady in RED.”

A week after its frantic second-half rally failed to produce a victory, Western Illinois finished the job Saturday in Youngstown, Ohio.

In its opening Missouri Valley Football Conference game of the season, Western got a 20-yard field goal from Schaumburg’s Mason Laramie with 2 seconds remaining to beat Youngstown State, 38-35, after trailing by 28 points in the first half. The kick not only gave WIU (1-3 overall, 1-0 MVFC) its first win, but also provided the team’s first lead of the season.

Laramie’s winning field goal was his second attempt at the same distance. Moments before his game-winning kick, he made an attempt that was erased by a YSU timeout.

Western announced after the game that its 28-point comeback victory was the largest margin in MVFC history, breaking the previous record of 23 points.

Try, try again

Last week, the Leathernecks lost a 62-56 home decision against Eastern Washington in which they trailed, 55-21. This week, they relied on a key defensive stop of YSU at the Penguins’ own 36 with less than 2 minutes remaining to get the ball back to its offense in a tie game. Two connections from quarterback Connor Sampson to tight end Mason Sikes provided a key first down, then running back Ludovick Choquette put together runs of 4 and 12 yards.

An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on YSU (1-2, 0-1) set the Leathernecks up at the Penguins’ 2 for Laramie to win the game.

2. Defense proves resilient

A leaky Western defense that gave up 62 points last week followed that up by allowing 35 in the first half Saturday. The Leathernecks didn’t let the rough start bury them.

Western allowed YSU only 97 yards of second-half offense. Only 76 of the Penguins’ 324 total yards came by the pass.

The star of WIU’s defense Saturday was defensive back Darius Joiner, who piled up a whopping 23 tackles to lead all defensive players on both teams. Six players combined for five tackles for loss, and linebacker Herschel Blankenship had a team-best three pass breakups for Western. Senior safety Mike Lawson grabbed an interception.

3. Offense remains potent

Win or lose, the WIU offense remains a point-scoring machine.

Sampson piled up 316 passing yards on 33 completions and threw four touchdowns. His favorite target, wide receiver Dennis Houston, grabbed nine passes for 110 yards. Fellow senior wideout Tony Tate and Choquette each had eight catches.

The Leathernecks finished the night with 400 total yards and 28 first downs.

The Leathernecks welcome Southern Illinois for a Missouri Valley Football Conference game Saturday, Oct. 3 for a 3 p.m. kickoff in Macomb.

After a beautiful launch to orbit and an exciting splashdown in the Atlantic Ocean, the crew of SpaceX’s Inspiration4 has successfully completed the first all civilian mission to space.

SpaceX sent the crew of Inspiration for on a three day mission orbiting the Earth, without any professional astronauts to command the mission or pilot the Dragon spacecraft. The launch was funded by billionaire tech founder Jared Isaacman, who selected three additional civilian crew mates to join the mission.

Inspiration4 was more than just a mission to space. Isaacman decided to use the mission to raise funds for the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. After setting a fundraising goal of $200M, Isaacman selected crewmembers that best represented the values of the mission to help raise awareness of the mission and funds.

Haley Arceneaux was the first crewmate named to the mission, as an ambassador for St. Jude and as the mission’s medical officer. Hayley currently works as a Physician’s Assistant at St. Jude where she also received treatment for bone cancer as a child. Dr. Sian Proctor and Chris Sembroski won their seats on the mission and will serve as mission pilot and mission specialist.

Following a 24 hour delay, SpaceX successfully launched Inspiration4 into space from Launch Pad 39A just after 8pm ET, Wednesday, September 15th. The first stage of the Falcon9 rocket returned to Earth, landing on one of the company’s barges in the Atlantic Ocean. Soon after the Dragon capsule reached speeds of up to 17,000 miles per hour and orbital insertion.

Onboard cameras revealed the crew’s zero gravity indicator- a plush service dog representing the working dogs at St. Jude Research Hospitals. Cameras of the crew cut out soon after orbital insertion, but updates from SpaceX and the Inspiration4 team shared a view of Earth from the Dragon’s cupola.

On the second day of the mission the crew held a ten minute livestream from space. During this time the crew talked about their experience so far, shared a view from the cupola right as the sun set and an aurora revealed itself. Haley demonstrated the use of some of the medical equipment the crew was using to conduct research, Dr. Sian shared some of the artwork she was creating in space, and Chris played a tune on a ukulele that was going to be auctioned off.

The Dragon capsule reached a maximum altitude of 597 km, before descending on the second night in preparation for their return to Earth. SpaceX ran a Dragon tracker for the duration of the mission giving followers the chance to watch for the crew pass overhead on one of its nearly fifty orbits of Earth.

Splashdown of the capsule and crew came early evening off the Space Coast, in the Atlantic Ocean. Residents nearby report hearing the sonic boom as Dragon made its fiery reentry passing through Earth’s atmosphere.

SpaceX recovery crews secured Dragon before pulling it onboard the company’s recovery ship where the crew made a triumphant, and slightly unsteady, exit. Following recovery the crew underwent quick medical checks before being flown back to Kennedy Space Center via helicopter.

This place was previously Boba Club, a spot for Asien focused teas and freezes. They had their soft opening over the past weekend, offer some hazy New England style IPAs. A firm date for business has not yet been announced.
