Sky fans excited about WNBA buzz in Chicago during championship run: ‘It’s our time’Madeline Kenneyon October 17, 2021 at 8:59 pm

The Sky hold a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series against the Phoenix Mercury. They have the chance to become the first Chicago professional sports team to clinch a title at home since the Blackhawks in 2015.

Marsha Brawner was hospitalized for more than three months after falling seriously ill this summer. She recently had surgery that made it so she can’t speak.

Still, she insisted on being at Game 4 of the WNBA Finals on Sunday.

“We’re supporting women,” her niece, Breannah Ranger. said. “It’s our time; it’s Chicago’s time.”

While thousands attended the Bears’ 24-14 loss to the rival Green Bay Packers at Soldier Field, many Chicago sports fans believe the biggest and most important game of the day was taking place one mile southwest at Wintrust Arena.

“I’m very confident,” Ranger said. “Candace Parker… after the game the other day, it looked like she was very serious and she’s moving on to the next and prepared for this game. I’m excited to see what they bring and I think they’re going to shut them out.”

The Sky hold a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series against the Phoenix Mercury. They have the chance to become the first Chicago professional sports team to clinch a title at home since the Blackhawks in 2015.

But perhaps even more significant, they are generating a buzz in the city in a way the 16-year-old franchise and women’s professional sports in general have never seen.

The Sky played in front of back-to-back sold-out crowds at Wintrust Arena for Game 3 and 4 of the Finals.

“It was probably one of the most fun games I’ve ever went to,” longtime fan Susan Leitao said of Game 3.

Ranger played college basketball at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, where she once went head-to-head with Brittney Griner. Being a former player, Ranger said it’s meant a lot to see the growth of the women’s game over the last few years.

“You can see a big difference now with the support… it’s amazing that this is starting to become more [mainstream]; it’s a lot better than what it used to be,” she said.

Ranger’s mother, Michelle Ranger, began to tear up as she discussed what it means for the Sky to be gaining attention in sports-saturated Chicago as they’re on the brink of winning their first title.

“It is emotional because we’re from Chicago — we’re a very diverse city, we’re a city that loves our sports, but we also represent women, and it’s about time now in 2021 that we give the women of the Sky and of the WNBA their just due,” she said.

Teen’s mother helped identify him as shooter in gang-related slaying in Austin: prosecutorsTom Schubaon October 17, 2021 at 9:18 pm

Joshua Scarver, 18, was ordered held without bail Sunday in last month’s fatal shooting. Prosecutors said his mother acknowledged in a videotaped statement that she personally saw her son open fire during the attack.

A teenager’s mother helped identify him as the shooter in a fatal gang-related attack last month in Austin, prosecutors said during his initial court hearing Sunday.

Joshua Scarver, 18, of Austin, was charged with first-degree murder in the Sept. 16 slaying of 20-year-old Charles Starks, according to authorities.

During Scarver’s bond hearing Sunday, prosecutors told Judge Susana Ortiz his mother acknowledged in a videotaped statement that she personally saw her son fire multiple gunshots during the attack in the 600 block of North Central Avenue. Scarver, who was just 17 at the time, was ultimately held without bail.

Prosecutors said the shooting followed “several hostile incidents” between rival gang factions, including an incident a week earlier during which Scarver forcibly stole money and cannabis from Starks and an individual who witnessed the fatal shooting. Friends of Starks later retaliated and fought with Scarver, prosecutors said.

The conflict came to a head about 6:45 p.m. Sept. 16, when Starks and the witness were biking through an alley in the 600 block of North Central Avenue and ran into Scarver, prosecutors said. Scarver then punched Starks, walked to an SUV and started firing off a handgun.

Starks was struck three times as he and the other individual attempted to ride off, prosecutors said. The other apparent target ultimately fled to a youth center, called 911 and gave police the location of the attack.

Starks was found unresponsive in the alley and later pronounced dead at a hospital, prosecutors said. Twenty-five shell casings were found strewn throughout the alley.

A witness reported hearing as many as 10 gunshots from inside his home, prosecutors said. When the witness stepped outside, he heard roughly 10 more shots and saw a black male holding a handgun and entering the passenger side of an SUV on a nearby parking slab that took off.

Investigators learned an SUV that parks in that spot belongs to Scarver’s mother, prosecutors said. While she’s not the registered owner, prosecutors noted police have stopped her in the vehicle.

After conducting surveillance on the SUV, police took Scarver and his mother into custody on Friday, prosecutors said. Investigators then determined the mother was a witness in the case — not a possible offender.

In a videotaped interview, she told investigators she saw her son emerge from the SUV with a handgun during the fight with Starks, prosecutors said. She then saw her son shoot “repeatedly” at Starks before returning to the SUV, where she said he started shooting again. For his part, Scarver gave several different accounts before admitting “he was present in the alley and shot at the victim.”

Prosecutors noted Carver hadn’t previously been arrested as an adult, though he has a juvenile background. That includes an aggravated robbery arrest in 2017 that resulted in a sentence of two years probation, prosecutors said.

Scarver’s public defender described him as a high school student who’s active in his church community and who recently started working as a package handler.

Citing the wealth of evidence, including his mother’s statement, Ortiz ordered Scarver held without bail. “There’d be no better person to be familiar with Mr. Scarver’s identify than his mother,” Ortiz noted.

Though Ortiz barred Scarver from having any contact with witnesses, she said that order could be readdressed if he needs to speak to his mother.

Scarver’s next court date was set for Tuesday.

Lincoln-Way East’s Jack Tremblay (15) scores a touchdown against Lockport. | Kirsten Stickney/For the Sun-Times

Lincoln-Way East’s young team, a Springfield legend, Oswego’s star running back and Wauconda history.

Lincoln-Way East is clearly going through a rebuilding year. The Griffins are playing young guys all over the field.

“We had 16 kids start or rotate in [against Lockport] that are going to be on our team next year,” Lincoln-Way East coach Rob Zvonar said. “Nine or ten juniors and five sophomores playing with everything on the line. The future is bright.”

The biggest difference between the current team and the dominant squads of the past few years is size. Lincoln-Way East’s linemen are normal sized these days, not giants. In fact, Lockport was clearly the bigger team in the trenches during the Griffins’ 12-10 win against the previously unbeaten Porters on Friday.

That made Lincoln-Way East running back Trey Johnson’s performance even more impressive. Johnson, a senior, had 32 carries for 127 yards. Johnson is a violent, aggressive, punishing runner. That’s a combination that isn’t common in the area this season

The Griffins may not be as dominant as the past few seasons, but Johnson and receiver Jack Tremblay, a Central Michigan recruit, provide two breakout weapons on offense.

Zvonar’s defense is as organized and effective as ever, which will surprise no one. Lincoln-Way East will be a significant threat in the playoffs.

“We hope to make a deep playoff run and you never know,” Zvonar said. “After [beating Lockport] this group will believe anything is possible.”

Oswego’s star running back

Oswego knocked off rival Oswego East 38-14 on Saturday. It’s the 16th win for the Panthers in the 17 games the teams have played. Oswego East won for the first time in the spring.

The Panthers still weren’t able to crack the Super 25 rankings, but they are on a roll with six consecutive wins.

Senior running back Mark Melton has been posting spectacular numbers for Oswego. He had 23 carries for 203 yards and two touchdowns against Oswego East, 176 against West Aurora and 241 against Minooka.

Springfield legend

Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin beat Normal U-High 49-6 on Friday to earn longtime coach Ken Leonard his 400th win.

Leonard became the state’s winningest coach in 2018, he’s led the Cyclones to five state championships and is 400-80 overall in 42 seasons.

“I still love what I’m doing,” Leonard told the State Journal Register after Friday’s win. “Some people get out and retire way too early because if you love what you’re doing, why do you have to stop? I don’t have long — I don’t know exactly how long I’ve got — but I can see the end from here.”

Wauconda history

Wauconda beat Grayslake North 62-30 on Friday to win its first conference title since 1972. The Bulldogs are undefeated and having their best season since they went 7-3 in 2007-08.

Wauconda has shut out Proviso West, Riverside-Brookfield, Grant and North Chicago this season. The Bulldogs are at Round Lake in Week 9 and will have a lofty seed in the Class 6A playoff pairings, which will be released on Saturday.

Cincinnati rises to No. 2 in college football poll; Iowa drops to No. 11Ralph D. Russo | Associated Presson October 17, 2021 at 7:09 pm

Georgia remained the unanimous No. 1.

Cincinnati moved up to No. 2 behind Georgia in The Associated Press college football poll Sunday, the first time a team from outside the traditional power conferences has been ranked that high since 2010.

The Bulldogs remained a unanimous No. 1 with 63 first-place votes in the AP Top 25 presented by Regions Bank and the Bearcats inched up a spot, taking advantage of Iowa’s loss to Purdue on Saturday.

The Hawkeyes dropped nine places to No. 11 and the Boilermakers moved into the rankings at No. 25, snapping the longest current AP poll drought for a Power Five school. The Boilermakers were last ranked in 2007.

Oklahoma is No. 3, followed by Alabama and Ohio State.

Unbeaten Cincinnati from the American Athletic Conference reached a new best ranking in program history and is the first team to reach No. 2 from outside a Power Five or BCS conference since TCU finished second in 2010, when it went undefeated as a member of the Mountain West.

Boise State, then a member of the Western Athletic Conference, spent three weeks at No. 2 in 2010.

Oklahoma State moved up to No. 8 after beating Texas and is in the top 10 for the first time since early in the 2020 season.

POLL POINTS

Seven ranked teams lost on Saturday, including five to unranked teams, increasing the total on the season to 47.

In each of the last three weeks, a top-three team has lost to an unranked team, starting with Stanford over then-No. 3 Oregon on Oct. 2.

Texas A&M knocked off then-No. 1 Alabama last week before Iowa was upset at home.

IN

All those losses by ranked teams shook up the back half of the rankings and put five new teams in the poll this week, including one that has never been there before.

— No. 19 Auburn (5-2) is back in the rankings after a road victory against Arkansas.

— No. 20 Baylor (6-1) returned to the Top 25 with a convincing victory against BYU.

— No. 23 Pittsburgh (6-1) is ranked for the first time this season. Quarterback Kenny Pickett and the Panthers thumped Virginia Tech on Saturday. Pitt has been briefly ranked in four of the last six seasons but never higher than 21st.

— With Purdue (4-2) slipping into the rankings, Kansas takes over the top spot on the list of longest current runs without being ranked among Power Five schools. The Jayhawks were last ranked in October 2009. Up next are Illinois, Rutgers, Oregon State and Vanderbilt.

— No. 24 Texas-San Antonio (7-0) is unbeaten and ranked for the first time in the history of the program. The Roadrunners have only been playing at the highest level of Division I football since 2012. They are the first Conference USA team to make the Top 25 this season.

OUT

Florida fell out of the rankings for the first time this season after the Gators were beaten by LSU on Saturday.

That leaves the state of Florida with no ranked teams, a rare occurrence in recent poll history. The last time it happened was 2011, when six times the Sunshine State did not have a single ranked team.

— Arkansas’ three-game losing streak has dropped the Razorbacks from the rankings after a five-week run.

— Arizona State is out again after losing to Utah.

— BYU lost for the second straight week and is unranked for the first time since last month.

— Texas is back … to be being unranked after the Longhorns blew a double-digit, second-half lead for the second consecutive week.

CONFERENCE CALL

As Blackhawks approach crisis point, Patrick Kane backs Jeremy CollitonBen Popeon October 17, 2021 at 5:17 pm

Jeremy Colliton’s job security is tightening after the Blackhawks’ 0-2-1 start. | AP Photos

“We’re a good-enough team [and] well-enough coached to get out from underneath this,” Kane said Saturday after the loss in Pittsburgh.

In a cramped room deep inside PPG Paints Arena late Saturday night, Patrick Kane went out of his way, unprompted, multiple times, to make clear his support of Blackhawks coach Jeremy Colliton.

But in doing so, Kane also indirectly acknowledged his awareness of the mounting pressure on Colliton, whose patient, reasoned approach has yet to yield much tangible success entering his fourth season and whose intensive training camp immediately led into a disastrous first week of this season.

“There obviously needs to be some urgency to get in the win column and play better and have better starts,” Kane said after the 5-2 loss to the Penguins. “But for us, I think we’re a good enough team [and] well-enough coached to get out from underneath this and turn it around.”

He emphasized the same sentiment again a few minutes later.

“We’ll find a way to turn it around,” he said. “Like I said, I have a lot of confidence in the team we have [and] the coaching staff.”

One glance at social media and it becomes clear how strongly and sharply the Hawks’ fan base has turned on Colliton, a man they never completely accepted after the front office pulled a quick trigger on Joel Quenneville in 2017.

Nearly every reply to the Hawks’ official final score tweet Saturday calls for his firing. His introduction as coach during the home opener pregame ceremony Tuesday, something the Hawks probably shouldn’t but traditionally must do, will be met by loud boos raining down around the United Center.

After just three games, Chicago’s previous skepticism of Colliton has quickly morphed into unequivocal condemnation and, in some cases, outright hostility. And many of the hostiles assume Kane and Jonathan Toews — the two beloved veterans (and two Quenneville products) still chugging — feel the same distaste toward Colliton, if only secretly.

Kane almost certainly does not, however. He has been a vocal supporter of the young coach since his first months in charge — they see the game similarly — and that hasn’t changed with one bad week.

But that doesn’t mean Colliton remains as secure as ever in his role. Expectations are far different this season than in his first three, now that general manager Stan Bowman has committed to spending big and promptly contending again.

An 0-2-1 opening road trip with two blowout losses doesn’t exactly look like contention. Colliton’s typical rhetoric about stringing good shifts together, hybrid defensive system characterized by lots of chasing and mellow, analytical, never fiery persona will start falling flat if not finally backed up by winning.

Many have recently mentioned the Hawks’ history of early-season firings, be it Denis Savard four games into 2008-09 or Quenneville 15 games into 2017-18. Colliton’s leash will be longer than that. The organization entered 2008 and 2017 looking for reasons to fire Savard and Quenneville; it did not enter 2021 with the same mindset. But his leash isn’t endless anymore.

And Kane, too, must improve if the Hawks are to do the same as a team. After not skating hard all summer and entering camp still somewhat inhibited by his nagging injury from last season, Kane hasn’t played like his usual dominant self yet.

He predictably holds the scoring lead with four points (one goal and three assists) through three games. But during his 47 even-strength minutes so far, the Hawks have been outscored 6-1 and swamped in scoring chances, 32-15.

“Sometimes the start of the season is a little weird,” Kane said. “I’ve never been a great preseason or training camp player. For whatever reason, I kind of feel out the games. I probably [need to] dictate it a little bit more and take over at certain times, but I’ve felt better as each game has went on.”

As the Hawks’ downward trajectory approaches a crisis point, no one involved is free from blame.

Prospect joins for the first time after knocking off Hersey. Check out where things stand as we head into the final week of the regular season.

Another calm week in the Super 25. Hersey, which had been ranked since the preseason, falls out after losing to Prospect.

The Knights take Hersey’s place. It’s difficult to figure out what exactly to do with the Mid-Suburban League this season. Several traditional top programs are having rough years. We will find out soon enough though, the playoff field is released in just a few days.

There are a number of major Catholic League match ups on Friday, including No. 1 Loyola at No. 11 Mount Carmel, No. 4 Brother Rice at No. 12 Marist and No. 23 Fenwick at No. 10 St. Ignatius.

I’m leaning towards attending the Fenwick-Iggy game. I haven’t seen either team yet and Fenwick has some talented players that will be contenders for the All-Area Team.

There aren’t any Public League games listed on this week’s schedule yet. We are waiting to receive the playoff pairings. Games will start on Thursday.
