The boy was struck in his ankle and the man in his chest and arm, police said. They drove themselves to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox and were expected to survive.

The shooting happened around 6:45 p.m. in the 1200 block of Luther Avenue.

Police did not release more details.

Kierra Moore, who dreamed of playing in the WNBA, was fatally shot Oct. 14.

Tristan Smith hopes to some day play in the NBA, and he understands it will take a tremendous effort to make it.

What makes no sense to the 10th grader is how someone with a similar dream, who was putting in the work, could be gunned down — hers now only a what-might-have-been story.

“That’s crazy because you can put so much work in and put so much effort to reach your dream and get it cut short off of something like that,” Smith said.

Smith was among the dozens of students who streamed into Michele Clark Academic Prep Magnet High School on the West Side Monday. About two dozen community activists, including pastor Ira Acree, greeted them, hoping to ease the pain of losing their classmate, Kierra Moore, who, family said, was destined to play in the WNBA.

The 16-year-old was shot and killed Oct. 14 while standing with a group of people in Lawndale, according to police, who said the gunfire came from gunmen in a black car around 11:30 p.m. in the 3100 block of West Polk Street.

Moore was hit several times and died at Mount Sinai Hospital. Family insisted that Moore was not with a group of people when she was killed. Moore was with her twin sister in a rideshare car that was blocked by another vehicle, her family have said.

Some students huddled with Acree and his group in prayer Monday. Others walked into school, appearing dazed — perhaps from the unwelcome spotlight or from trying to process the tragedy.

“I know these kids are traumatized, I know they are just in another place, having to deal with such an awful, unnecessary death of someone who was a leader, who had a pathway out of poverty,” Acree said. “So we’re here to support them, if it’s just nothing but standing with them with a smile and letting them know it’s going to be alright.”

Counselors have been on hand to help students struggling with their emotions, school administrators said. And then to remind them that there is hope in education.

“We know that if we can get them off to college, then they can see a different tomorrow,” said Donovan Robinson, the school’s director of students.

The child was in the living room with two other children, 8 and 12, in the 4000 block of South King Drive when he was struck in the leg by a bullet, police said.

An 11-year-old boy was wounded Sunday morning after another child accidentally fired a gun in a home in Bronzeville on the South Side.

The child was in a living room with two other children when one of them, an 8-year-old, fired a gun by accident, Chicago police said.

The 11-year-old was struck in his leg and taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, where he was in fair condition.

It’s unclear how the child who fired the gun gained possession of it. The other child, 12, was uninjured.

The shooting happened about 1:55 a.m. in the 4000 block of South King Drive. Police reported no arrests.

In June, a 4-year-old boy was wounded in an accidental shooting in Woodlawn on the South Side. Police said the child was hit in the hand and a 17-year-old boy was shot in the foot June 21. A 15-year-old boy seen leaving the home was arrested and charged with unauthorized use of a weapon.

In response to Briggs’ criticism, Jackson found a 10-year-old tweet that points out some of the former Bears linebacker’s own tackling problems.

While Bears safety Eddie Jackson set a season high with eight tackles against the Packers, much of the discussion of his performance after the game focused on a play in which he failed to properly take down Green Bay receiver Davante Adams, who bounced off the defender to gain some significant bonus yardage.

Among those who criticized Jackson’s shoddy tackling technique was someone who knows a lot about tackling: Lance Briggs, the former Bears linebacker who recorded 1,181 tackles during his 7-time Pro Bowl career.

Now an analyst for NBC Sports Chicago, Briggs noted after the Bears’ 24-14 loss that Jackson’s name “keeps coming up for the wrong reasons.”

Apparently Jackson, a two-time Pro Bowler himself, got wind of Briggs’ post-game criticism. It’s also fair to say that he did not appreciate it considering the Bears safety responded by finding a 10-year-old tweet that highlights Briggs’ own tackling problems.

Jackson’s late-night shot didn’t last long on Twitter before being deleted.

Four people were killed and at least 20 others were wounded in shootings over the weekend in Chicago.

Four weekend murders on South, West sides

A man was fatally shot leaving a gas station Saturday morning in Roseland on the Far South Side. Joshua James, 29, was leaving a gas station about 1:50 a.m. in the 10000 block of South Michigan Avenue when he was struck in the head and back by gunfire, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
A person was fatally shot Sunday evening in East Garfield Park on the West Side. The male victim was in the 600 block of South Springfield Avenue around 8:45 a.m. when he was shot multiple times, police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A few hours later, a 31-year-old man was fatally shot Sunday in West Garfield Park. He was found unresponsive on the ground around 2 p.m. in the 4500 block of West Wilcox Avenue, with a gunshot wound to the right side of his neck and shoulder, police said. The man was taken to Stroger, where he was pronounced dead, police said. His name has not been released.
Another man was Sunday afternoon in Chatham on the South Side. The man, 41, was found inside a home in the 8100 block of South Drexel Avenue, with a gunshot wound to his armpit, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released.

Four teens wounded

A 16-year-old boy was critically wounded in a shooting Friday evening in Humboldt Park. The teen was sitting inside a car around 7:40 p.m. in the 700 block of North Hamlin Avenue when someone opened fire, police said. He was struck in the face and was taken to Humboldt Park Health Hospital.
Saturday night, a 17-year-old girl was among two people shot in a Back of the Yards attack. The teen and a 19-year-old woman were driving shortly before midnight in the 4600 block of South Paulina Street when they were struck by gunfire, police said. The 17-year-old was shot in her hands and the woman was shot in the back, police said. The 17-year-old was in good condition while the woman was listed in serious condition.
An 18-year-old man was shot Saturday morning in the 1800 block of South California Avenue in Brighton Park, police said. He was shot in his back around 2 a.m. on a sidewalk and listed in good condition.
Another 18-year-old man was shot Friday evening in Pilsen on the Lower West Side. He was also shot in his back on a sidewalk, police said. He was taken to a hospital in fair condition.

Kennedy Expressway shooting

A man was seriously hurt in a shooting early Sunday on the Kennedy expressway. The 29-year-old man was driving about 2 a.m. near the Ontario ramp leading into the westbound lanes of Interstate 90/94 when someone in another vehicle fired shots, Illinois State Police said. He was seriously injured. His passenger was unharmed.

At least 13 others were wounded in shootings in Chicago from 5 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.

There’s going to be another party at Millennium Park.

The city’s celebration of the Sky’s WNBA championship will be sometime Tuesday, Mayor Lori Lightfoot said Monday morning in an appearance on The Score. No other details were available.

This will be the first championship celebration since the Cubs won the World Series in 2016 and the Blackhawks last Stanley Cup victory in 2015.

The Sky rallied in the fourth quarter Sunday to defeat the Phoenix Mercury 80-74 in Game 4 of the WNBA Finals at Wintrust Arena.

“This one is so sweet,” the Sky’s Candace Parker — who played high school basketball at Naperville Central — said after the game. “To do it with this group. I love this group, I love this team. And to do it here at home, it was just supposed to be.

“It was just an amazing feeling to be from here and see so many people in the stands that have been supporting you since you started. It’s just a moment where you just have to really take it in.”
