10 Bars Around Chicago For the Perfect Girls NightAmanda Schellingon April 19, 2022 at 3:12 pm

*Shania Twain voice* Let’s Go Girls! There are three ingredients that make the PERFECT girl’s night: good food, great drinks, and a lively atmosphere. Lucky for you, we’ve compiled a list of spots for you and your girlfriends to get dressed up, hit the town, and soak in each other’s awesomeness. From cocktails, to music, to mouthwatering bites, this list has everything you need to make your next Girls Night Out the best one yet. Don’t forget to queue up those female anthems to set the tone for the night, too (Cyndi, Ariana, Beyonce, Lizzo, we’re looking at you).

180 N Morgan St, Chicago, IL 60607

I’m truly convinced that no girl’s night is complete without slamming a shot of Patrón and throwing the ice glass that it came in at a bell. Lucky for those who agree with me, Federales has it all. Not only can you find sweet and refreshing cocktails (hello, mango margarita), but the food is out of this world. Next time you and your girls are in need of mouth-watering bites like shrimp tacos and smoked brisket nachos, strong drinks, and a vibrant spot to spend some quality time together, Federales is your place.

I have two words for you that are important to any good GNO: Espresso. Martinis. Along with our favorite caffeinated cocktails, Gallucci’s offers homemade Italian comfort food that invites you and your girls to kick back, and indulge in savory comfort favorites like Cacio e Pepe, Napoletana pizza, and spinach and ricotta arancini. Their craft cocktails and wine list tie everything at Gallucci’s together for the perfect night with your #squad.

905 W Fulton Market, Chicago, IL 60607

It can often feel like your girls’ nights are always going to the same three places, BUT, new to Fulton Market is Lyra. With incredible Greek food and inventive cocktails, your tastebuds and best friends will thank you for finding this new and exciting spot. Our picks from the menu? The starter plate (complete with spicy feta, tzatziki, and tarama), charcoal-grilled meatballs, and of course a Santorini Spritz to top off a delectable meal at Lyra.

626 N State St, Chicago, IL 60654

Pasta, pizza, and wine. Do I really need to say more? Nestled in the bustling Near North neighborhood, you’ll find Quartino. This bi-level Italian eatery with a gorgeous patio is the perfect spot to take your group for sharing delicious small plates and perusing through the extensive wine list. Quartino emphasizes an “approachable atmosphere” and you’ll be sure to feel right at home as you connect with friends and satisfy your cravings with some of the best Italian food Chicago has to offer.

58 E Oak St, Chicago, IL 60611

You may know Cooper’s Hawk from their extensive wine list and delicious food, but did you know they recently opened Esquire by Cooper’s Hawk in the Gold Coast? Being the first restaurants under the “by Cooper’s Hawk” name, they will feature menus from visiting, critically acclaimed chefs, keeping Chicago known as one of the best cities for food in the world. If you and your girlfriends are looking to try a place with ever-changing menus, wine choices from Master Sommelier, Emily Wines (yes, that is her last name), and a cozy atmosphere, look no further than Esquire by Cooper’s Hawk.

3207 N Sheffield Ave, Chicago, IL 60657

When you and your girls are looking to catch up over a hand-picked charcuterie and refreshing drinks, you have to stop into Figo Wine Bar. Located in Lakeview East, this intimate wine bar focuses on shareable menu items, where you can also choose from various meats and cheeses for you and your friends to build your perfect charcuterie. What’s better than a girl’s wine tasting night in a cozy, rustic restaurant? Nothing!

12 W Elm St, Chicago, IL 60610

We discovered this little joint in the classic girl’s night theme: we went somewhere together, got bored, so we pulled up Google map and typed in bars nearby. There was no reason other than we thought The Sparrow had a cool name like those hidden regular’s bar, so we decided to give it a shot, and gosh, what a delight!

Reflecting the sophistication of the surrounding Gold Coast neighborhood, The Sparrow is a hidden gem, especially for rum lovers with its extensive list of sugar cane rums. With its low-key yet elegant interior, we honestly can’t think of a better place for some private talk between girlfriends.

3700 N Halsted St, Chicago, IL 60613

Ladies, it’s time to go see the Queens! At Kit Kat Lounge in Wrigleyville, the name of the game is gorgeous Drag Queens, and the energy they bring is electric. With a huge martini menu, fun shots, and sweet margaritas, your night at Kit Kat Lounge will be taken up a notch with a little buzz and highly entertaining drag show. Best part? They also offer drag brunches to turn the basic bottomless mimosas into something extraordinarily fierce.

1520 N Damen Ave, Chicago, IL 60622

At the Violet Hour, you and your friends are sure to feel sophisticated and satiated because of their upscale, elegant decor and enticing menu. With classic cocktails like a Manhattan, negrini, and gin gimlet, paired with “Shaken and Stirred” Violet Hour classics, there is something on the menu for everyone in your group. If you’re looking to do something out of the ordinary, the Violet Hour also hosts virtual cocktail-making classes via Zoom, where they provide all the supplies you need to make the perfect cocktail in the comfort of your best friend’s apartment.

3201 N Halsted St, Chicago, IL 60657

If you and your girls are more into day drinking than staying out all night, Drew’s on Halsted is the place for you. Drew’s huge brunch menu is the perfect place to nurse your headache from last night, and turn the day into something a little more energetic with their hand-crafted cocktails, innovative martinis, and coffee-centric drinks. If you’re looking for something unique for you and your girls, Drew’s also hosts an outstanding Cabaret show that can only be reserved by calling, so make sure you get your spot quickly!

Honorable Mention: Taco Bell

JK! But just to be fair, we all know that at the end of a booze-filled girls night, you’re scouring Uber Eats for the best-drunk food your $10 can buy. What sounds better at 2 AM than crunchy nachos, a Mountain Dew Baja Blast, and sweet, sweet cinnamon twists. So thank you, Taco Bell, for being there all those nights (or days!?) when our stomachs are eating us from inside out.

We’d also like to thank the Taco Bell gods for FINALLY bringing back the Mexican Pizza this year. 2022 is looking up!

Chicago Bears new OC already doing things Matt Nagy never didRyan Heckmanon April 19, 2022 at 7:35 pm

Early on in the Chicago Bears offseason work, we are already learning about how second-year quarterback Justin Fields is furthering his development.

Last year, under former head coach Matt Nagy, Fields didn’t receive a whole lot of genuine help or development. In fact, early in the regular season, Nagy was obliterated by Bears fans after referring to his backup quarterback as a “chess piece” within the offense, while Andy Dalton kept the starting gig.

Nagy was stuck in his ways. He and Ryan Pace both wanted Dalton, therefore Fields never received the correct amount of practice reps and went through a tumultuous rookie season.

This year, though, is different.

Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy is already helping Justin Fields further develop his fundamentals.

Bears QB Justin Fields says OC Luke Getsy has already been working on his fundamentals. A small tweak: changing his dropback so he’s got his left foot forward when he gets back there. Should speed things up and help with timing.

— Jason Lieser (@JasonLieser) April 19, 2022

Luke Getsy took over as the Bears’ offensive coordinator earlier this offseason and comes from a system that runs a Shanahan style of offense. That, in and of itself, is encouraging. But, the fact that Getsy is already noticing mechanical and fundamental areas worthy of change is a huge positive.

Last year, one of the only times you heard a Bears coach go more in-depth when it comes to Fields’ mechanics and fundamentals was in late December. Quarterbacks coach John DeFlippo talked about Fields’ movement in the pocket and his decision-making.

But, we hardly heard anything from Nagy about Fields’ fundamentals. We hardly ever heard anything from Nagy about Fields’ development.

It’s even more apparent, now, that Nagy was ill-equipped to be a head coach for a team that’s trying to develop a franchise quarterback. Fans probably remember Nagy putting blame squarely on his rookie quarterback at times, too, instead of owning his quarterback’s lack of development.

With Getsy’s fresh approach and his keen eye for some of the little things, Bears fans can rest assured knowing their quarterback is getting the proper training and coaching.

Per Chicago Sun-Times beat writer Jason Lieser, Fields said today that he’s learned a whole lot in just a year, which is also a great sign. When asked how much better he understands playing the quarterback position in the NFL, Fields responded:

“A lot. There’s not one place you even start [making a list].”

Though this offseason hasn’t seen the Bears add too much talent around Fields just yet, knowing that the coaching staff has taken to Fields and is doing everything in their power to make him a better quarterback is a consolation.

Now, we can only hope that Ryan Poles and his team hits a home run in the 2022 NFL Draft next week.

Englewood church mural depicting Jesus spared in devastating fire at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church

A fire that destroyed Englewood’s historic Antioch Missionary Baptist Church on Good Friday somehow left intact a wall with a mural depicting Jesus’ ascension.

The mural, on an inside wall of the church, appears to have been untouched by the flames despite several days of burning, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

“It’s just one of those things,” Fire Department spokesman Larry Merritt said Tuesday.

The colorful image shows Jesus ascending to the heavens, flanked by two angels as his disciples look on.

“While he blessed them he was parted from them and carried up into heaven” from Luke 24:51 is written above the scene.

It wasn’t long after the Rev. Gerald Dew presided over a Good Friday service Friday afternoon that fire tore through the historic structure at 6248 S. Stewart Ave., sparked by a propane torch that was being used to work on the church’s roof.

The fire appeared to begin in the upper rear area of the church and caused the roof to collapse.

The congregation gathered Sunday at a nearby funeral home for an Easter service.

Afterward, Dew said the service marked “a new beginning” for the church and even brought the church some new members, and he asked for donations to address the toll of the fire.

“I’ve seen resurrection in my own lifetime,” he said in an interview then. “And this church is gonna be bigger and stronger than ever.”

White Sox, Guardians postponed again

CLEVELAND — The White Sox’ scheduled game against the Cleveland Guardians Tuesday night at Progressive Field has been postponed due to cold weather.

The game will be made up as part of a straight doubleheader Wednesday starting at 1:10 p.m. Chicago time.

It’s the second night in a row the Sox and Guardians have been postponed. Monday’s game was called off because of snow and cold weather. There was no precipitation in the area Tuesday but temperatures were in the upper 30s with 20-30 mph winds Tuesday afternoon. The expected high was 42 degrees with much colder wind chills.

Dallas Keuchel will oppose Cleveland’s Shane Bieber in Game 1 Wednesday. Jimmy Lambert starts for the Sox against Triston McKenzie in Game 2. In the final game of the series Thursday, Zach Plesac pitches for the Guardians against Dylan Cease.

You Will Lose Your Head Over SIX THE MUSICAL

You Will Lose Your Head Over SIX THE MUSICAL

In our history lessons we know that Henry the VIII had six wives. Some of which he beheaded in order to take another wife.  We have never heard the history told from the point of view of the wives.

The North American Tour Aragon Company of SIX. Photo by Joan Marcus (A0130r)

We now have our chance in SIX THE MUSICAL.  In the opening number “Divorced, Beheaded, Died, Divorced, Beheaded, Survived” the six wives, Catherine of Aragon (Khaila Wilcoxon), Anne Boleyn (Storm Lever), Jane Seymour (Jasmine Forsberg), Katherine Howard (Didi Romero) and Catherine Parr (Gabriela Carrillo) tell their story of their lives, how they came to be a wife, and how their relationships ended.

With the help of the Ladies in Waiting all female band, the wives sing, dance, compete on which wife had suffered the most while married to the King.

The voices are phenomenal and the stamina of the show refreshing.

From the writing of Lucy Moss and Toby Marlow, the direction of Lucy Moss and Jamie Armitage, Gabriella Slade’s futuristic costume design, and Joe Beighton’s Music Supervision, the audience is engaged with hand clapping, dancing, and laughter throughout the 80-minute production.  It also gives an insight to who these women were before, and after their marriages.  It suddenly made them human and not just discards of a selfish King.

Bringing history into the present with references to cell phones, Beyonce, and online dating, is so relatable and fresh.

Even though I had two of the tallest men in Chicago sitting in front of me I had one of my best times at the Theatre in a long time.

This is truly a 5 out of 5 winks of the EYE.

Visit www.broadwayinchicago.com for more information on the SIX THE MUSICAL!

Until next time, keep your EYE to the sky!

Kyrie handed $50K fine for flipping off Celts fanson April 19, 2022 at 7:13 pm

Brooklyn Nets guard Kyrie Irving has been fined $50,000 by the NBA after he flipped off several Boston Celtics fans on two occasions during Sunday’s Game 1.

In a release Tuesday, NBA president of league operations Byron Spruell said Irving was being fined for “making obscene gestures on the playing court and directing profane language toward the spectator stands.”

Following the Nets’ 115-114 loss, Irving said he was responding to words he heard from the crowd and that he would have “the same energy” for the fans that they had for him.

“When people start yelling ‘p—y’ or ‘b—-‘ and ‘f— you’ and all this stuff, there’s only but so much you take as a competitor,” Irving said. “We’re the ones expected to be docile and be humble, take a humble approach, f— that, it’s the playoffs. This is what it is.”

Game 2 of the series is Wednesday night.

Irving, who played for Boston for two seasons from 2017 to 2019, said Sunday that he has gotten used to getting booed by Celtics fans since leaving the team. Last season, Irving had a water bottle thrown at him by a person in the crowd as he made his way off the floor.

He also said last season that there was “subtle racism” from the TD Garden crowd at times, acknowledging that he heard some racist comments.

Kevin Durant, who has had his own high-profile team changes during his NBA career, shared his perspective Tuesday on how fans react to players they used to root for, saying “It’s healthy once everybody understands both sides.”

“It’s rooted in love,” Durant said. “They once loved you. They once cheered for you and bought your merchandise and had life-altering experiences coming to games watching you play. So when that kind of gets ripped from them from just something like a trade or demanding a trade or wanting to lead, they feel like a piece of them is gone too.”

Asked if he thought Irving enjoyed playing the villain role, Durant said, “Some days he might be up for it; some days he might not. But he understands what this job entails. We understand what this situation is. So he might not be in the mood for it next game, who knows.”

Nets swingman Bruce Brown, who is a Boston native, said he doesn’t think Irving is concerned about the reception that is likely awaiting him from Celtics fans in Game 2.

“The Celtics fans are loud,” Brown said. “They can be a little much sometimes, but it’s Boston. A great fan base. They’ll be on him [Wednesday], but he ain’t too worried about it.”

ESPN’s Nick Friedell contributed to this report.

Pastor Gerald Dew couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

The fire appeared to begin in the upper rear area of the church and ultimately caused the roof to collapse. Around 150 fire personnel and 50 engines, trucks and ambulances responded to the scene and put out the fire in about two hours.

The church’s congregation gathered Sunday at a nearby funeral home for an Easter service. Afterward, Dew said the service marked “a new beginning” for the church and even brought new members.

He also called for donations to address the toll of the fire. “I’ve seen resurrection in my own lifetime,” he told the Sun-Times. “And this church is gonna be bigger and stronger than ever.”

6 Keys for the Chicago Bulls to win game 2 against Milwaukee

Heading into Game 2, the Chicago Bulls are coming off a competitive outing against the Milwaukee Bucks after a scary start to the first quarter that had them down 13 points. However, they were able to let the Bucks know they were not going to be an easy team to sweep in four games.

Despite a lot of isolation play on offense (only 17 team assists) and poor 32% field goal shooting in Game 1, Chicago was just down one point with 1:36 left in the game. In Game 2, we will see if Coach Billy Donovan and the Bulls can expand on some of the strategies that worked in Game 1 in order to steal a pivotal game in Milwaukee. Below are some of the keys that worked for Chicago during the course of Game 1 against the defending Champions:

I Just Lost in Wordle–Let It Be!

I Just Lost in Wordle–Let It Be!

I used to solve the Wordle daily
On my phone, it seemed easy.
But now my joy has ended.
Let it be.

I would pick the likely letters
And make words like “Sprit” and “Spree.”
But today I couldn’t get it.
Let it be.

I felt like a Wordle Ninja
My streak had reached to ninety-three.
Until I hit a stumper.
Let it be.

Today the panic rose within me
As just three letters turned to green
And that was on my sixth try
Let it be.

Yesterday I was an All-Star
“Flair” in TWO, I said with glee.
But today I chucked up.
Let it be.

Some people post their score on Facebook
I did it too, but just rarely.
I’m done with Wordle boasting.
Let it be.

I’ll still read my daily paper
The Tribune and the NYT.
But Wordle thrill is fading.
Let it be.

So I’m back now to the crosswords
With my pen and cup of tea.
Wordle made my heart break,
Let it be.
