Instagram post by Larry Ogunjobi may signal second chance with Chicago BearsRyan Heckmanon April 24, 2022 at 4:06 pm

When NFL free agency opened its doors in March, the Chicago Bears kicked things off by agreeing to terms on a 3-year, $40.5 million deal with former Cincinnati Bengals defensive lineman Larry Ogunjobi.

First-year general manager Ryan Poles had found the perfect 3-technique for head coach Matt Eberflus’ new defensive scheme, and fans were excited about the energetic, fiery Ogunjobi.

However, after a failed physical, Ogunjobi’s deal with the Bears ended up falling through and Poles had to make the difficult decision of letting that contract fall apart. The Bears went on to sign free agents Justin Jones and Al-Quadin Muhammad to bolster their defensive line depth, but the loss of Ogunjobi stung. He was an ascending player coming off a career year. It was a tough pill to swallow.

A recent instagram post by Ogunjobi, though, might signal that the Bears are not done with him.

Larry Ogunjobi recently posted photos of a workout featuring Chicago Bears equipment, signaling a possible reunion.

The post by Ogunjobi showed him lifting weights with Bears equipment, which caused a lot of fans to wonder if he had been in the building again.

After the original deal fell through, Poles called it “emotionally draining” and talked about how difficult it was to have to let him go. However, he did not rule out the possibility of bringing him back in later on.

Now that Ogunjobi’s instagram post has gotten the attention of Bears fans, and likely Bears media, one can only wonder if the Bears coaching staff, along with Poles, will face questions about his status with the team this week.

If the Bears were to somehow agree to yet another deal with Ogunjobi before the 2022 NFL Draft, it would strongly help Poles’ draft strategy. The Bears’ defensive line would look a lot better with both Ogunjobi and Jones on board, allowing Poles more flexibility this weekend in the draft.

Last year with the AFC Champion Cincinnati Bengals, Ogunjobi finished with 7.0 sacks, 12 tackles for a loss and 16 quarterback hits — all career highs. Prior to this foot issue, Ogunjobi had actually been very healthy over his career.

The 27-year-old just might be on his way back to Chicago after all, if these hints mean anything. Let’s hope for Ogunjobi’s sake, and the Bears’ defense sake, that a second chance can come to fruition between the two sides in the near future.

White Sox’ Eloy Jimenez out 6-8 weeks with hamstring strain

MINNEAPOLIS — The White Sox on Sunday said they expect outfielder Eloy Jimenez to be out six to eight weeks with a right hamstring strain.

Jimenez landed on the 10-day injured list and will undergo further evaluation by team physicians at Rush hospital before a treatment plan is put in place, the team said.

The Sox will give more details on Jimenez’ outlook Tuesday before the team opens a home stand at Guaranteed Rate Field. The Sox complete a road trip in Minneapolis Sunday afternoon.

Jimenez was injured running out a ground ball in the second inning of a 9-2 loss to the Twins Saturday, the Sox’ sixth defeat in a row.

“The injury to Eloy is more important than losing the game,” manager Tony La Russa said Saturday. “He banged the hamstring serious enough. We have to wait for the MRI to get the final diagnosis, but it makes everybody want to break up. We lost a player two years in a row.

“It just breaks your heart.”

Jimenez will join eight players on the injured list: Right-handers Lance Lynn (right knee), Lucas Giolito (returning from abdominal strain Sunday), Joe Kelly (biceps nerve) and Jonathan Stiever (right lat surgery), left-hander Garrett Crochet (Tommy John surgery), third baseman Yoan Moncada (oblique) and outfielder Yermin Mercedes (broken hamate bone).

Luis Robert sustained a groin pull in Cleveland Thursday that will keep him out of the series in Minneapolis.

Game Recap

Alec Mills took the hill for the first time this year. He struck out five without walking a batter but he also got tagged for eight hits in just three innings. Still, you gotta start somewhere. He threw 62 pitches. My guess is he makes another 1-2 starts with Iowa to get him above the 80 pitch mark.

Game Recap

Watch out for Riley Thompson this year. His innings load will be monitored closely but the guy has a lot of talent out on the mound and he could very well be a help to the Cubs in 2023 if he can manage to stay healthy this year while building up some stamina. He’s got MOR stuff and tossed three shutout innings yesterday.

Peyton Remy followed with 5 dominant innings, then Brandon Hughes capped off the shutout with a perfect 9th. The three combined to punch out 12 Trash Pandas.

The offense was led by the two Nelson’s, Velazquez and Maldonado. Those two should really have begun in Iowa in my view. Nelson Velazquez blasted his 5th homer already on the season, and Nelson Maldonado went 3-for-3 and drew a walk to raise his batting average to .400.

Another day, another good game for Pete Crow-Armstrong. He went 2-for-4 with his bases loaded double in the 6th providing the Pelicans staff with a ton of breathing room. Ethan Hearn hit a two-run double earlier in the game to give Myrtle Beach the lead and which proved to be the game winner as the Pelicans pitchers tossed a beauty.

21-year old Porter Hodge has been a nice story early on for the Pelicans. He’s been working in the mid-90s and I’ve seen reports of solid secondary offerings as well (but it’s been hard to get a read myself as the video coverage of Pelicans game so far has been lacking). He’ll be someone I pay close attention to once Myrtle Beach gets that broadcasts up and running. His five shutout innings earned him his first win and lowered his ERA to 2.19.

White Sox OF Jimenez out 6-8 weeks for hammyon April 24, 2022 at 4:29 pm

Chicago White Sox outfielder Eloy Jimenez is expected to miss six to eight weeks after suffering a hamstring strain in Saturday’s loss to the Minnesota Twins.

Jimenez landed awkwardly on first base after hitting a ground ball to Twins third baseman Luis Arraez in the second inning. He immediately went to the ground and stayed there until the medical cart came while the training staff attended to his injury.

It is the second straight season Jimenez has landed on the IL with a long-term injury. Last year he was out for nearly four months with a pectoral injury suffered in spring training.

Jimenez, 25, was hitting .229 with one home run entering the game Saturday.

With Jimenez going on the 10-day injured list, the White Sox reinstated right-hander Lucas Giolito from the 10-day IL. Giolito will start Sunday’s game against the Twins.

Information from ESPN’s Jesse Rogers was used in this report.

Blackhawks’ Riley Stillman believes he hasn’t yet reached his ceiling

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Riley Stillman’s 100th career NHL game came and went earlier this month without much fanfare.

To Stillman, though, reaching that milestone (on April 10 against the Stars) meant a lot.

“It was an important thing for me,” he said Thursday. “It was a little faster but also took a little longer than you think at times, with injuries and stuff like that. Anytime you get another 100 games under your belt is something you can look back on and be proud of. It was big for me and my family.”

Of course, it’ll take a decade for Stillman to have a chance to pass father Cory’s 1,025 career games, and his younger brother Chase — the Devils’ 2021 first-round pick — soon will be chasing him, too.

After a few years in Florida waffling on the cusp of “NHL regular” status, however, Stillman finally has broken through this season with the Blackhawks. The 24-year-old defenseman entered Saturday with 12 points in 49 games, averaging exactly 15 minutes of ice time per game.

He has been part of interim coach Derek King’s roster rotation in recent weeks, and he asked his dad recently if one ever feels fully comfortable in the NHL. Cory told him no. But reaching that 100-game milestone has at least made him more comfortable.

“You’re never fully established because someone is coming for your job every day, but it was … exciting for me to be like, ‘You know what, we’re here,’ ” Stillman said. “And I’m in a position to improve and get better and try to move up the chain.”

Indeed he is. With two years remaining on his contract, he can feel a lot more certain than, say, fellow 24-year-old defenseman Caleb Jones — a pending restricted free agent — that he’ll stick around through the rebuild. And that should lead to plenty of opportunities to move up the depth chart.

King believes Stillman’s ceiling is higher than his current role as a third-pairing player.

“He’s got another level,” King said Thursday. “He’s an Energizer Bunny out there. Sometimes he gets a little reckless, but his ceiling, he has not reached it yet. He’s still young, still figuring out the game. But I like the energy he brings; I like how he plays.

“He’s going to be a good penalty-killer, a good shutdown kind of defenseman, whether it’s like a Jake McCabe or [Calvin] de Haan we have already. [He’ll be] a younger version with maybe a little more energy.”

Stillman believes that, as well.

“I hope to be a top-four defenseman,” he said. “I hope to be a steady guy that can be trusted to play in every situation, whether that’s [against] top lines, with the goalie pulled — for us or for them — [or] someone that can kill penalties. That’s my goal.”

He plans to take a week off -after the Hawks’ season finale -Friday night in Buffalo, then to get in the gym five or six days per week throughout the summer, hoping to continue building up strength.

While he does, the Hawks’ defensive depth chart seems likely to change significantly. For now, though, he looks up to the veterans around him and sees their longevity as a target to strive for.

He can rattle off exactly how many games McCabe, de Haan, Seth Jones and Connor Murphy each have played.

“I have 100 games now, but it’s not nearly enough for a defenseman,” he said. “[I’ll] continue to lean on the older guys and take everything in [about how to] make better decisions with the puck, when to jump, when to stay back, when to try to go for a big hit, when not to.

“In three to five years, you’ll see a drastic change.”

Grizzlies’ Jenkins rips ‘inconsistent, arrogant’ refson April 24, 2022 at 8:49 am

MINNEAPOLIS — Memphis Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins ripped game officials following the Grizzlies’ 119-118 loss on Saturday in Game 4 of their first-round series against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

“We’ve got to play better, but in my opinion, [this was] one of the most poorly officiated games I’ve ever seen in my NBA career,” Jenkins said in his postgame news conference. “All five of our starters borderline fouled out in the first quarter. Ten-plus foul difference, 40 free throws. Yeah, some things we’ve got to clean and get better at, but I’ve never seen a more inconsistent and arrogant officiated game.

“So I’ll take whatever hits are coming my way. I gotta protect our guys. We know we’ve gotta get better, but from the get-go, it was foul, foul, foul, foul, foul, inconsistency. There was actually one play where a foul whistle was blown before contact was even made. It’s embarrassing.”

In Game 4, officials whistled Memphis for 33 personal fouls as compared to 23 for Minnesota, with the Grizzlies’ starting five combining for 25.

“I don’t even wanna talk about the officiating,” Grizzlies forward Dillon Brooks said. “When I was growing up, when I was in the league the first three years and I watched playoff basketball, there were barely any calls called. They let the players play and figure it out. I felt like they just wanna run the show. They want their name on TV, and their names are all over that TV, all three of them. It should be called out.”

The series, tied 2-2 heading back to Memphis for Game 5 on Tuesday, has been marred by foul trouble for key players. In Game 2, the teams combined to attempt 33 free throws in the first quarter. Grizzlies’ big man Jaren Jackson Jr., one of the team’s standout defenders, has racked up 20 personal fouls in the four games while converting only 14 field goals. He fouled out Saturday night with 4:29 remaining in the game.

Timberwolves center Karl-Anthony Towns also has struggled. He sat considerable time on the bench with foul trouble in Games 2 and 3, both Timberwolves losses.
